"Ring out old shapes of foul disease, Ring out the narrowing lust of gold, Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace." — In Memoriam. "One touch of nature makes the whole world kin." When we see a fellow human falling on the tracks before an oncoming train we do not stop to ask, "Is he a Jew ; a Catholic ; a Moslem, or a Protestant ?" We rescue him. In the extremis, his creed, his country or his color are nothing ; his jeopardy is all. This tome is written by a citizen of the world, possibly partly Teutonic, as are many citizens of all the Anglo-Saxon countries, one attached to no secret society or order, ecclesiastical, social or political, of any kind whatsoever, and is for American and Briton, Austrian and German, Frenchman and Russian, Italian and Belgian, Serbian and Jap, Turk and Bulgarian, and for all those nations which have hitherto existed mainly by the sufferance of the World Powers, and for Asia and Africa and the islands of the sea. It is an an- swer to the question, "Whence and wherefore these agonies, these tears, this blood?" It is to show from the only Book that is of universal import, acceptance and power, the prophecies con- cerning all nations and covering two to four thousand years past, that relate to the great war, that show its principals and culprits, its duration and end, its victors and its world-wide fruitage. It is for the glory of God in whom we all believe, the peace on earth for which we all yearn, and for that good will among men which is now at hand. The White Horse of Revelation means the tri^ umph of truth, and thus to-day not only the Gospel but the Tele- graph, the Telephone, the Submarine Cable, Wireless Telegraphy and the Universal Press are publishing truth in all the earth, every lie is nailed to the counter, and there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed and nothing hid that shall not be shouted from the housetops. PART ONE The Culprits and the Conspiracy "For I dipt into the future, Far as human eye could see, Till the war-drum throbb'd no longer, And the battle flags were furl'd, In the Parliament of man, The federation of the world." — Lockslcy Hall. "The time is nigh when heroism will come as readily to the human soul as the smile does to the child's face." — Montagut. Armageddon* means a great plain, the great war, cut off, Rev. slaughter, the judgment of God, the Great Destruction, and these, 16, v. 16 in turn, mean guilt, conviction, punishment and the final conflict between good and evil, the prelude to the great reconstruction ; and thus, in the summer of 1914, toward the end of the six thou- sandth year of human history, we reached the culmination, the climax of human duplicity, deception, conspiracy and guilt. The nations were groaning under unheard of taxation for the sup- port of tremendous military establishments, a taxation which was gnawing at their vitals and sucking their life's blood, and grim revolution and anarchy stood leering at the door. Both the United States and Great Britain were in the hands of weak,* vacillating minority governments. France lay under the spell of materialism and agnosticism. Russia was only awaking from the sloth of ages. Austria-Hungary was openly utilitarian, a hetero- geneous congeries of incohesive peoples and tongues. Italy was the bleeding victim of two mutually destructive systems, So- cialism and Clericalism. Japan was turning away from Buddha and stepping forth into a new regeneration. The United States was worshipping the Golden Calf — the Almighty Dollar. Great Britain was^ backsliding to prize-fighting and pleasure seeking. Germany was under the heels of an autocratic despotism and atheistic socialism and was worshipping Mars, the God of War, and the Universities of Heidelburg, Leipsic and Berlin were spewing forth Infidelity, Socialism, Haekelism and Rationalism had spread these deadly poisons all over Europe and Amer- ica and the scholastic world generally. Ignorance, vice, super- stition and unbelief ran riot. For over a generation the Lutheran prodigal had been conspiring with the Scarlet Woman, and to- gether they had been deliberately sowing the seeds of suspicion, distrust and dissension within the Anglo-Saxon Empires and else- *A synopsis of this was written by the author in November, 1914 — and published in the Glasgow Times on February 2, 1915, under the caption "Armageddon and After." 8 THE WHITE HORSE where, and the weeds of jealousy, hatred and mahce within the Teutonic Empires. The German people were maliciously taught that all their neighbors were enemies plotting and planning their ruin ; that Russia, France and Britain were spiteful, jealous and envious of Germany, the youngest Empire's progress, or, in other words, that Mr. Multi-millionaire was envious of Mr. Hardup; that the Czar of all the Russias was bursting with jeal- ousy of the Emperor of the Sahara; and the German "mind grew by what it fed on," "for as a man thinketh so he is," and enmity, and venom, hatred and jealousy welled up till their flood gates burst and the most hellish, hybrid child of all the Ages was born, the hounds of hell were unleashed, and the ministry of blood and the carnival of death had begun, two hemispheres were involved, a thousand million people were in conflict, and the few remaining so-called neutral peoples were also yoked up making the machinery of destruction and the enginry of war; the roar of cannon was cleaving the clouds ; the groans of the wounded and dying were rending the heavens, for retribution demands blood. All had sinned and come short of the glory of God ; there were none righteous ; no, not one. But the arch-culprits had dis- .- covered themselves. In Revelations, Chapter i6. Verse 13, they j^gy are plainly named, "The Dragon, the Beast, and the False Prophet," the first being represented by Germany, the second by Austria and the third by Turkey. In Genesis, Chapter 10, Verses 2 and 3, dating back over four thousand years — that is, ■ two thousand three hundred and forty-seven years before Christ — there flourished Japheth, a son of Noah, two of whose sons were Gomer and Magog, from whom are descended the Gomerians, or Germans, and the Asiatics, including the Scythians, Goths, Huns, Tartars, Moguls and Turks, notorious for thou- sands of years for siege weapons and ruthless ravage and war. Eze 38 Thus is explained the present affinity between Germany and written 2600 Turkey, they being originally first and second sons of the same years ago family, the same father. This, compared with the prophecy of Ezekiel, Chapter 38, where we see Gog and Magog, which by interpretation means the governors and the people with all their hosts and munitions of war and shining armor coming like a cloud and being turned back with pestilence and blood and overflowing rain ; and again in the 39th chapter, where they will be defeated utterly in the vicinity of Palestine and Persia. Compare this with the prophecy of Daniel, written over two thousand five hundred years ago, or six hundred years before Christ, and also Revelations, Chapters 15 and 16, written 1,900 years ago. Here we have whole nations whose minds are blinded lest the light of the truth should reach them led by the Prince of the power of the air; the Spirit that now works in the children of disobedience, led under a strong delusion that they should believe a lie. AND HIS RIDER Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham and Japheth ; and unto them were sons born after the flood. The sons of Japheth ; Gomar, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras. And the sons of Gomar; Ashkenaz, and Ripath, and Togarmah. And the sons of Javan ; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands ; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their na- tions. Gen. 10 : 1-5. (This genealogy dates back over four thousand years, or two thousand three hundred and forty-seven years before Christ, and introduces Gomar and Magog, the progenitors of the Gomerians, or Germans, and the Asiatics, including the Scythians, Goths, Huns, Tartars, Moguls and Turks.) And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Al- mighty. Rev. 16: 13-14. (The Dragon, the Beast, and the False Prophet are here seen to be the arch-conspirators.) Genesis 10, verses 1-5 Written 4347 years ago Revelations 16, verses 13, 14 written 1900 years ago PART TWO The Conflict and Its Conclusion "Thrice is he armed who had his quarrel just; and he but naked, tho' encased in steel, whose conscience is attained." — Shakespeare. "Time's glory is to calm contending kings, To unmask falsehood and brins truth to light." — Lucrcce, This war will last three and a half years, or, as it is foretold in Holy Writ, 1,260 days; 42 months; a time and times and half a time. The book that foretold by five hundred years that Canaan was the property and would become the possession of the Hebrews ; that foretold by seven hundred years that the Roman general, Titus, would utterly destroy Jerusalem, and that the then fifteen-hundred-year-old Jewish nation would be scat- tered abroad because of their rejection of Christ and would be- come a byword and reproach among all nations, also said : The days will come when men out of all languages and nations will take hold of the skirts of him that is a Jew, saying, "We will go with you, for we have heard that God is with you," and "The day will come when he that has no sword should sell his coat and buy one" ; also foretold two thousand five hundred, and, also, nineteen hundred years ago, the duration and end of this world conflict, and that Palestine would, out of this carnage, be re- stored to the Jews and their ancient national glory resumed un- der the sceptre of the Prince of Peace. That God would "shake all nations," both neutral and belligerent. And to-day there is not one strong, stable or secure government in the universe. Two years ago no one believed it possible that any government could quarantine food, and labor, and capital, and men, much less whis- key, absinthe, vodka, etc., et., or would be able to tell men what they must or must not work at and, whether they could go into this or that city or state or country, but we are surfeited with government control. Now we know what we heretofore sus- pected. Socialism, root and branch, is bondage and slavery ; its fruit is Anarchy. Over all mankind less than ten per cent, are Socialist, less than ten per cent, of women are interested in suf- fragism, and only about ten per cent, of the workers are tied to labor agitators. Capital long since learned that only healthy and prosperous Labor can assure prosperous Capital, and Labor is to-day learning the counterpart of this, namely, that only by healthy and prosperous Capital can Labor live. That Capital — the head needs Labor — the hands — that the hands are useless AND HIS RIDER ii without the head. But the ten per cent, is noisy. Yet ninety per cent, of mankind, irrespective of color, creed or country, are on one side of the AiHes in the Great Conflict and by Divine Help will make this a better world to live in — a New Creation. When we find all the families of the earth coming in tens of millions and giving all they have and life itself, and spending a hundred thousand millions — 100,000,000,000 — of money for justice, righteousness and liberty, the moral is, "God's in his heaven ; all's well with the world" — the Millennium is upon us. But the great struggle will not be finally decided alone by armies or navies, though they are playing their part with a hero- ism that is unspeakable and unparalleled. When King George began his great review of the troops in France his horse, never before known to be fractious, reared and rolled over on him, and he went back to his Palace an invalid for many days. When Kitchener, having completed the most gigantic volunteer and non- professional army of all time, embarked to plan the war's cam- paign, God took him, and he found a grave in the mighty deep by the shores of the land he loved, for the battle is not Man's, it is God's ! When the Kaiser William, the arch socialist, says, "Our old God will yet lead us to victory," he suggests that he has no God, for an old God must be a decaying, therefore a de- cayed one ; perhaps a wooden one like that of his arch-con- spirator comrade who speaks of "those in whose hands our fate is," he, therefore, having a bunch of gods. Confirming this, in another speech he said, "The only gods I recognize in this war are the forces of nature," and, in accord with this, he massed together the most stupendous array of the machinery of destruc- tion ever known, and the day of which the Prince of Peace said "Then let him that hath no sword sell his coat and buy one" was upon us, and the Lord of Sabaoth, the Lord of Hosts, whom the Psalmist calls a God of War, who aforetime gave his people victory over the hosts of the Assyrians, Moabites, Ammonites, Amalekites, Philistines and Egyptians when he sent forth his chosen, Israel, with the command to destroy them utterly, was p^ 2 again challenged by those who say they know no God. And thus, v. 1-12 during 191 7, not only the opposing armies and navies, but also and nature and nature's God will lend a hand, and famine, and pes- P^- ^4, tilence, and earthquake, and fire and flood will play their part ; disruption and revolution will occur in Germany, Austria and written 3000 Turkey, the people turning against their rulers who had so cruelly years ago deceived, misled and ruined them. Then will appear to all men the consternation and shame of the traitors, cowards and slackers and all who stood with folded arms while brutality, pil- lage and murder ran riot, dishonoring and disgracing manhood and civilization. Then will come the utter confusion of those who wickedly say, "Peace, peace," when there is no peace. "There is no peace,' saith my God, "to the wicked." The wicked 12 THE WHITE HORSE are like the troubled sea which cannot rest, whose waters con- tinually cast up mire and dirt. Then will it be understood of all men why those who wanted war have been using every ul- terior means to obtain a patched-up peace ; why those who set out claiming necessity above law are now appealing to law ; why those who deliberately adopted the brutal but futile methods of terrorism are now asking for pity, and why those who wanted war now want peace, while those who did not want war do not want peace, but justice and righteousness. Peace is not a manu- facture ; it is a growth ; its soil is righteousness ; its sun is truth ; its atmosphere is victory. In this great struggle for Righteous- ness, God and Humanity, there are many nations that are freely giving their life's blood, and, at the same time, have much more peace than the so-called neutral nations that have skulked from the plain path of duty. Canaan was blood-bought ; America was blood-bought, as were practically all countries, and these miser- able pacifists of whatever social, political, or religious name, who say and believe the lie that this, and many other countries, were stolen from murdered aborigines should be hounded out of a land, whose liberty was made by and now rests on force, and still depends on those who are willing to give their lives for it. There are millions of square miles of good, unm- habited land. Let them be honest and sneak away and rid us of their parasitical carcasses and cease fattening on the blood of others. War is a curse or a blessing ; a crime or a duty ; a calam- ity or a privilege ; a shameor a glory ; a punishment or a disci- pline, as its motives dictate, and this war will be chastisement and discipline to the penitent nations, and punishment and de- struction to the reprobate. The world dominion of Chaldea, Persia, Greece and Rome passed away because they were built on political intrigue, deception and conquest, and all such re- ligions and empires are doomed. The present world empire is built on blood-bought righteousness and freedom and contains more Jews, more Catholics, more Moslems, and more Protestants than any other. Its sons come from far ; its children from the ends of the earth ; from the four winds of heaven and from the seven seas and offer themselves and all they have and life itself. Sixty-six per cent, of the world's commerce is in her language, and seventy-five per cent, of the ships of all the oceans fly her flag. Her tongue is increasing; all others are diminishing. She still holds the candlestick of Divine favor. She is giving all she has for humanity. She is destined to grow more glorious till she merges into the Millennial Kingdom. Her enemies shed tears of remorse but not of repentance. They see the handwriting on the wall. They know their time is short ; that their doom is sealed. The Anglo-Saxon race, Great Britain and America, the modern Judah and Israel, Britain the father, America the mother, of constitutional government and the confraternity of nations, are AND HIS RIDER 13 crossing their Red Sea, and the modern Pharoah will perish in its flood. About the end of 1917 the Allies will win with over- whelming victory and the song will again ascend to Heaven : Sound the loud timbrel O'er Egypt's dark sea, Jehovah hath triumphed. His people are free. And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Son of Eze. 38 man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief Written 2600 prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, and years ago say, Thus saith the Lord God: Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with buckles and shields, all of them handling swords: Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them ; all of them with shield and helmet : Gomer, and all his bands ; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands : and many people with thee. Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them. After many days thou shalt be visited : in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste : but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them. Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the people with thee. Thus saith the Lord God : It shall also come to pass that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought: And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled vil- lages : I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates. To take a spoil, and to take a prey : to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land. Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil ? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil? Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord God : In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it? And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and mighty army : And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes. Thus saith the Lord God : Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time by my servants the prophets of Is- rael, which prophesied in those days many years that I would bring thee against them? And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord God, that my fury shall come up in my face. 14 THE WHITE HORSE For in my jeolousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken. Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel : So that the fishes of the sea and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the mean that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my pres- ence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground. Eze. 38, 20 And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord God: every man's sword shall be against his brother. And I will plead against hini with pestilence and with blood: and I w^ill rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, overflowing rain, and great hail- stones, fire and brimstone. Thus will t magnify myself, and sanctify myself and I will be known in the eyes of many nations and they shall know that I am the Lord. Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord God : Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: and I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel : And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and I will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand. Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Is- rael, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee; I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord God. And 1 will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the Lord. So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel ; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more ; and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel. Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord God ; this is the day whereof I have spoken. And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years so that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests, for they shall burn the weapons'with fire ; and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and take from (lisse that robbed them, saith Eze. 39 11 *^^ Lord God. And it shall come to pass in that day that I will give up to Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea; and it shall stop the noses of the passengers; and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude; and they shall call it The Valley of Manongog. And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land. Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them : and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord God. And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it; after the end of seven months shall they Eze. 39, 15 search. And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man's bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of AND HIS RIDER 15 Hamon-gog. And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land. And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord God: Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field. Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the moun- tains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood. Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan. And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drmk blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you. Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord God. And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them. So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that day and for- ward. And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity ; because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them all into the hand of their enemies; so fell they all by the sword. According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them. Therefore, thus saith the Lord God, now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name. j\fter that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land and none made them afraid. When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am sanc- tified in them in the sight of many nations, then shall they know that I am the Lord their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen ; but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there. Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord God. . Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible. This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, his legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaflf of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them ; and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. This is the dream ; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king. Thou, O king, art a king of kings ; for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold. And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third See also Joel 3, verses 9-17 Written 2700 years ago Daniel 2 The four former World Empires, namely : The Babylonian The Persian The Grecian The Roman i6 THE WHITE HORSE Despotism and Democracy fail to blend Daniel 7 Written 2500 years ago Rev. 14 Written 1900 years ago kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth. And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron; foras- much as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things ; and iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potter's clay, and part of iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. And as the toes of the feet were part of iron and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves in the seed of men ; but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed ; and the king- dom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold ; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter ; and the dream is certain, and the inter- pretation thereof sure. I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me. I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things. These great beasts which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth. But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever. Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet ; and of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyas, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows. I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them : And the kingdom and dominion, and the great-ness of the king- dom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an ever- lasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey Him. Hitherto is the end of the matter. As for me, Daniel, my cogitations much troubled me, and my countenances changed in me ; but I kept the matter in my heart. And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication. And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, he shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation ; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb : And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever ; and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoso- ever receiveth the mark of his name. Here is the patience of the saints ; here are they that keep the commandments of AND HIS RIDER I7. God, and the faith of Jesus. And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle. And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap ; for the time is come for thee to reap ; for the harvest of the earth is ripe. And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth ; and the earth ■was reaped. And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire ; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying. Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth ; for her grapes are fully ripe. And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the wine- press even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs. And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvelous. Rev. 15 seven angels having the seven last plagues ; for in them is filled up the wrath of God. And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire ; and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvelous are thy works. Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name ; for thou only art holy : for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest. And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened : And the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles. And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever. And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled. And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth. And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth ; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image. And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea ; and it be- came as the blood of a dead man : and every living soul died in the sea. And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters ; and they becarne blood. And I heard the angels of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink ; for they are worthy. And I heard another out of the altar say. Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments. And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun ; and the power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. And i8 THE WHITE HORSE men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues ; and they repented not to give him glory. And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness ; and they gnawed their tongues for pain. And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains ■p iz- ■.-;> a"d their sores, and repented not of their deeds. And v. D, V. i jjjg sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. And he gathered them together into a place called in the Rev. 16, v, 16 Hebrew tongue Armageddon. And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air ; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying. It is done. And there were voices, and thunders, and light- nings ; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell : and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And every Island fled Rev 16 21 away, and the mountains were not found. And there ' jfell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail ; for the plague thereof was exceeding great. And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither: I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters ; with whome the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her forni- cation. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilder- ness ; and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication : And upon her forehead was a name written. MYSTERY? BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus : and when I saw her, I wondered with great admira- tion. And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou mar- vel? I will tell the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her. which hath the seven heads and ten horns. The beast that thou sawest vras, and is not ; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition ; and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. AND HIS RIDER 19 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. And there Rev. 17 10 are seven kings; five are fallen, and ONE IS, and the other is not yet come; and WHEN HE COMETH, HE MUST CONTINUE A SHORT SPACE. And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition. And the ten horns which Rev. 17, 12 thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no king- Ten temporary doms as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the Kingdoms will beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power be made and strength unto the beast. These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is the Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful. And he saith unto me. The waters which thou sawest, where the hore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whole, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. For God hath put in their hearts to fulfill his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, un- til the words of God shall be fulfilled. And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth. And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power, and the earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. And I heard another voice from heaven, saying. Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works : in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double. How much she hath glorified herself and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her : for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sor- row. Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine ; and she shall be utterly burned with fire; for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her. And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning. Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, the great city Babylon, that mighty city ! for in one hour is thy judgment come. And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her ; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more. The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyne wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble, and cinnamon, and odours, and oint- ments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and 20 THE WHITE HORSE slaves, and souls of men. And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all. The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, and saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls, For in one hour so great riches is come to naught. And every shipmaster, and all company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off, and cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying. What city is like unto this great city I And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness ! for in one hour is she made desolate. Rejoice, over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets ; for God hath avenged you on her. And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying. Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee ; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee ; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; and the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee ; and the voice of the bridegroom and the bride shall be heard no more at all in these ; for thy merchants were the great men of the earth ; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth. (Rev. i8.) See also Zachariah, Ch. 14 — written 2400 years ago. PART THREE The Conquerors and Their Conquests 'Ah ! when shall all men's good Be each man's rule, and Universal Peace Lie like a shaft of light across the land, And like a lane of beams athwart the sea, Thro' all the circle of the golden years?" — "The Golden Year." There are sweeter words than ever were said, And sweeter songs than ever were sung, And fonder tears than ever were shed By the eyes of the old or the hearts of the young. — S. K. Cowan. Man's proud fetish since and notwithstanding the Tower of Babel and confusion of tongues, has been the vain confidence that he could produce an ideal form of government, and he has forgotten that man's original sin consisted not in asking for a king, but in rejecting the Divine King The Theocrat. Thus we see in Nebuchadnezzar's ninety-feet-high image a head of gold, breast of silver, belly and thighs of brass, and feet and legs of iron and clay, signifying the declension of human government as seen in the four world empires, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome, and their continuous decadence to the present unspeakable in- compatibilities, despotic, democratic, autocracies, the mixing of democratic domination with autocratic authority, clay and iron that all the fires of seven hells could not blend, preaching peace while teaching war ; talking brotherhood and shouting yellow peril ; putting Kultur which is superficial, external, assumed and rationalistic, in place of Culture which is inwrought, inherent and of the heart and soul, true religion. (Culture is a means, not an end. It is the track, character and conduct, the goal. Culture is the ave- nue ; character, the mansion. Culture divorced from character is only ignorance and folly ; Kultur is a cloak of external dress. Culture is the religion of the soul; the one decorates the body, the other illumines the life. A cultured criminal is the most wicked and dan- gerous of all. Physical culture makes a good animal. Mechanical culture, a clever artist, but Moral culture alone can produce a good man, and righteousness alone exalts a nation. Marxism, Haekelism, Bernardism, Militarism and Kulturism all lead alike to national sui- cide. Thus it was that Germany was found both on the 22 THE WHITE HORSE wrong and the losing sides in all the recent wars, namely, the China-Japanese, the Jappo-Russian, the Spanish- American, the Turko-Balkan, and the Boer-British. German Kultur took sides with Chinese paganism, Rus- sian perfidy, Spanish butchery, Turkish brutality and Africander conspiracy, and Germany lost in each in- stance, as she will in the present war. The Allies are stronger numerically, potentially, mechanically, scien- tifically, financially, and, most vital of all, they are in- finitely stronger morally and spiritually. The days of wars of conquest are past. Given unexcelled military science, the greatest machines of destruction, and, if you will, ten or twenty millions of fighting men, not even the greatest nation could hope to wage successful war if it were waged against the moral conscience of human- ity, and when the question is one, not of policy, but of principle, and not a material, but a moral one, causing universal distress, it is doubtful if any nation having a voice in the councils of nations can for long maintain neutrality. When the gunmen are on the job, no fine questions are asked as to how many policemen shall be sent out, but rather, how quickly the law can be vindi- cated. And in questions of law and truth and justice neutrality may become a crime.) Extending the gloved hand to one and the mailed fist to an- other ; preaching peace here and war there ; maintaining a mock, artificial peace for the last generation that was more costly and bloody and damnable than any war in all history, and all the while sacrificing on the altar of hate untold millions of the earth's noblest and best! Peace cannot be made. It is not a manufac- ture ; it is a growth. There are many things that precede peace, as life, health, sustenance, reputation, justice, morality, righteous- ness, etc., etc. Formal peace may come from man ; actual peace from God alone. Peace is a growth ; its soil is righteousness ; its sun is truth, and its atmosphere, victory. Some nations are being martyred, some sacrificed, some crucified, and some destroyed. Whole nations are finding their soul and the purpose and meaning of life ; the lessons of crowded prisons, asylums and hospitals and the judgments of God. The Great Regeneration has begun. Men are washing their robes and making them white in the blood of the Lamb. Britain, France and Belgium are bleeding and agonizing together; Russia, Italy and Japan are suffer- ing hand in hand. The Universe is turning to the hill whence alone cometh our help, to the Lord God Omnipotent. The Great Humiliation is on. Men are beginning to respect manhood whether under a red or yellow skin, or white or black, and to realize that Homer, Virgil, Dante, Shakespeare, Scott, Rem- brandt, Handel, Beethoven, Moses, Paul, Wesley, Socrates, Plato, AND HIS RIDER 23 Cicero, Plutarch, Galileo, Newton, Caesar, Washington, Lincoln, Napoleon, Wellington, Columbus, Franklin, Watt and Stephen- son belong, not to any one nation, but to all mankind ; that Eng- land has her Alfred the Great ; Germany, her Frederick ; Greece, her Alexander, and Russia, Peter the Great ; that every nation has its own glory ; that there is no nationality in tears or sorrow, love or laughter, doubt or fear, hunger or distress, or faith, or hope, or charity. These know no frontiers or boundary lines, flags, em- battled walls, or battle cries. No obstacle of race, or creed, or tongue can alter these. Of one blood made He all nations of men to dwell on the face of the earth. We all had one progenitor and time, the common arbitor, sends all to a common end. Out of the great world conflict will come the unraveling of the babel of tongues, the end of the clash of selfish interests, the con- federation of nations and a blood-bought heritage of universal brotherhood, wherein race, and color, and creed lines will become invisible, if, indeed, they do not disap- pear. In the Great Reconciliation nations, like men, shall serve their day and generation, according to their gifts and calling ; nation shall no more rise up against nation ; men shall no more learn the arts of war ; the sword shall become a plough- share and the spear a pruning hook. The lion and the lamb shall feed together. The mountains shall break forth into singing. The trees of the fields shall clap their hands. Peace shall flow like a river, and joy and gladness shall cover the earth as the waters cover the sea. "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord ; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored. He hath losed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword, His truth is marching on. I have read a fiery gospel, writ in burnished rows of steel : 'As ye deal with my con-tem-ners, so with you my grace shall deal; Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel. Since God is marching on.' He hath sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat ; He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judg-ment-seat ; Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be ju-bi-lant, my feet. Our God is marching on." THE END PUBUSHED BY THE PEN-SWORD PUBLISHING CO. KEARNY, N. J. LIBRARY OF CONGRESS 3 021 547 591 8 •
