It has an average altitude of eight hundred feet above the sea level and enjo\s a climate that knows extremes of neither heat nor cold. It is comparativel>- a >oung city. It has leaped into prominence with a celerity unrivaled by any competitor. While not laid out until 1871, its real growth began with its first iron furnace which was erected in 1879. It is the center of steel, iron and coke making in the South. Within its limits and immediate vicinity are thirty-two blast furnaces making pig iron, and one steel mill turning out the best steel rails made in the United States. Another steel mill is in course of erection and several more have been planned. Nine railroad lines enter the city giving it transportation facilities to every point in the United States. It is an extremely healthy city — the white death rate being only nine to a thousand. It is a manufacturing center with a yearly output of manufactured products aggregating in value $90,000,000. It is especially noted for its high schools — the best equipped in the South, and for its parks which are numerous and extensive in area. The area of the city limits of Birmingham is very restricted, being only six and a ijuarter miles. Its population area is very large and contains a total population of 150,000 people — this number being in direct touch with the city streetcar lines. It is a well-paved, well-lighted, orderly city — a city of opportunities for rich and poor, and of delightful residential accommodations. Birmingham is the center of the only region in the world where coal, iron, lime.stone and dolomite are found in quantities in close proximity. It has the largest coal mine and the largest battery of coke ovens in the world. The price of pig iron is fixed throughout the world by the Birmingham market. In addition it is one of the largest long leaf yellow pine markets in the United States. Over one hundred thousand bales of cotton are handled annually. The finest clays in the United States are found in its near vicinity. It has unexampled facilities for cement production and its cement industry promises to become as conspicuous as its iron and steel industries. In the language of the Commercial Club, " Birminghan is the best place to live and make a living in the Ihiited States." Psflfeli§]hi®dl by S„ Ho KIRESS ^ COMPANY, - Bnirmmglbam, Ak. Cnpyrigllt.
