The western boundary of Greene county is in part marked by Cache River, which is not a naviga- ble stream, on account of being blockaded with logs that have accumulated there for years, which mater- ially retards the flow of the water and often causes overflows to quite a territory of the very finest pro- ducing lands in the United States. CfliinniatBC CoiniditflOiniSc Greene County, in cjui non with some of her sister ciunties of the gre.it Sfc.ite of Arkansas, shares the ])roud distinction of having one of tlu' most perfect climates to be found in the world. The four seasons seem to have entered into a compact to make life worth living in Greene county, Here the wintry winds of the North are met by b.il ny breezssfresh tr j n the tr.)pics; here mature Pall is met by youthful Spring, and all sha'ce haads and e.ioh returns tj his native home. This climatic condition doubtless a330unts for the absence of those dread diseases common to other parts of the United States, known as consumption, dipVie.rii, pj3a n3:iia, biUi.vas fevers, sm.illpjx, cholera, dyspepsia, etc. Should any of these diseases appear here, they yield readily to skillful medical treatment. Twelve years ago atthe spot on whieh the ■■PlKtiiix-like" city of Paragould is situated, was heat-d. at early twilight, the muffled flutter of the bat's wing, the hoot of the owl, the raving of the wolf and tlv heavy growl of the bear; but these have all disappeared before the march of civilization, and now Pari- gould has a bona fide population of thirty-two hundred, live, liberal and united people, hailing from nearly every State in the Union, all of whom share in an earnest desire to make Paragould the leadiii:;- city in the State. It is not the prevailing sentiment of her people to advance individual or class inter- ests at the expense of others, but to build all in proportion to the efforts of each. This book is not the advertisment of a land syndicate, nor is its purpose to offer a foot of land for sale; but is prepared and published by a committee appointed by the County Court, for the .sole purpose of inviting all honest, industrious, intelligent and progressive people seeking new homes to cast the'.i- fortunes with and help us and allow us to help you. Paragould has the following public enterprises already established, viz: Brinkman Stave Company. Henry Wrape Stave Company, J. S. Hasty & Son, (staves and heading), Paragould Stave and Heading Company, the monthly pay roll of the above plants amount to $60,000. J. S. Simons, Foundry; two planing mills, one flouring mill, one broom factory, one furniture factory, three blacksmith shops, three brick yarks. one lumber company, three railroads, viz: St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern, St. Loiu's Southwestern and Paragould Southeastern. The Press and Soliphone; five churches, Methodist, Missionary Baptist, Cumberland Presbyterian, Christian and Ro- man Catholic; two public schools, one classical institute, one parochial school, one Masonic, one Odd Fellows, one Dau<,'htors of Rebecca, one A. O. U. \V., one Knights of Pythias, one Knights of Honor, one Knights and Ladies of Honor, all in flourishing condition; two abstractors of land titles, two real estate offices. Paragould has in all seventy-two brick structures, andsome as substantial frame residences as may be found in much larger cities. The M. E. Church South has just been finished and furnished and is one of the finest buildings of the kind in the f^tate. Our court and opera houses are modern and well appointed. The scholastic population of Paragould is 960. Paragruld is situated on the southern and eastern slope of Crowley's Ridge, where the early sun- shine dries away the dew. and where, during the summer monts. is found a welcome .southern breeze, thus making the location exceptionally healthful. Its topography is undulating, thus affording natural sewerage which keeps the streets clean and the atmosphere pure and healthy. The State of Arkansas, the County of Greene and City of Paragould cordially invites and will wel- come you to a land where cyclones, floods, hot winds, early frostsand epidemics are unknown. Ira Comcliuisiioini It may be truthfully said that nowhere else can a land be shown where the farmer finds so many advantages. The early springs, the genial summers, the delightful fall fall, weather in which to ripen and gather the crops, the advantages of Seasonable rains, doing away with irrigation, the rich soils, tho great variety of products, hoalthfulness. water, excellent shipping facilities, etc., all go to make Greene county the farmer's ideal home.
