TEXTS OF ANTHEMS COMPILED BY CHARLES CUTHBERT HALL MINISTER LOUIS BELCHER CHOIRMASTER /\\^ c« pYR,GHT ^ v fER 23 188 ^, FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH BROOKLYN, N. Y. LOUIS BELCHER NEW YORK Copyright, 1888, by Louis Belcher. INTRODUCTORY NOTE. The purpose of the Compilers is to secure for the Anthem its proper dignity and its rightful place in Public Worship. The Anthem is not an ornamental prelude to a service, rendered during the assembling of the Con- gregation. It is not a musical performance for the entertainment of the Congregation and for the self- display of the Choir. It is a solemn act of worship, having its lawful place in the midst of the service, wherein noble and appropriate words, usually those of Scripture, are sung by the Choir, while the Congregation silently and reverently listen. But the Anthem cannot become an intelligible part of Public Worship while the People remain in ignorance of the words sung by the Choir. The Compilers of this Book offer to the People a collection of " Texts of Anthems," in order that (by placing the words within sight of all) this important part of Public Worship may henceforth be recognized as a solemn praise-offering unto the Lord; wherein the Congregation may, by silent and prayerful atten- tion, co-operate with the Choir in rendering unto God this ancient and stately office of devotion. Brooklyn, N. Y., October 1888. TEXTS OF ANTHEMS. i. O Zion! blest City, whence cometh salvation ! Chosen of God for His own habitation. We burn to exalt thee, to see thee all-glorious, Rise, disenthralled, o'er thy captors victorious. We sing in gladsome chorus, Though high is Jordan's swelling river ; Our Lord still goes before us, And will His flock from harm deliver ; He guides our feet, He hears our cry, And leads us on to victory. Hope ! weary heart, tho' the way be dreary, Soon thou'lt gain the blessed rest for pilgrims weary, Peace ! weary heart ; cease from care and sorrow, Rest, blessed rest awaits thee in the coming morrow. 2. Psalm xxvii. i. The Lord is my light, whom then shall I fear? the Lord is my strength ; of whom then shall I be afraid ? 16. O wait thou still upon the Lord, and He shall comfort thine heart. 5. For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His secret place : and set me up on a rock of stone. 7. Therefore will I offer in His dwelling an oblation ; yea, will sing, and speak praises to the Lord. 3' Psalm xix. Sir, if thou have borne Him hence, tell me where thou hast laid Him. " Mary !" " Master !" 1 Corinthians xv. 55. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory ? 57. Like as a father pitieth his own children: even so is the Lord merciful unto them that fear Him. 14. For He knoweth whereof we are made: He remembereth that we are but dust. 15. The days of man are but as grass: for he flourisheth as a flower of the field. 16. As soon as the wind goeth over it, it is gone: and the place thereof shall know it no more. 17. But the merciful goodness of the Lord endureth for ever and ever. 22. O speak good of the Lord, all ye works of His: praise thou the Lord, O my soul. 18. A Prayer. Lord, we pray Thee that Thy grace may always prevent and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works ; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 19. We praise Thee, O God, we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord. Alt the earth doth worship Thee, the Father ever- lasting. To Thee all Angels cry aloud, the heavens and all the powers therein, to Thee Cherubim and Seraphim continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Sabaoth, heaven and earth are full of the majesty of Thy glory. The glorious company of the Apostles praise Thee. The goodly fellowship of the Prophets praise Thee. The noble army of Martyrs praise Thee. The Holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge Thee : The Father of an infinite majesty ; Thine honorable, true, and only Son ; also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter. Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ, Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When Thou tookest upon Thee to deliver man, Thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb. When Thou hadst over- come the sharpness of death, Thou didst open the king- dom of Heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the Right Hand of God, in the glory of the Father. We believe that Thou shalt come to be our Judge. We therefore pray Thee help Thy servants, whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy precious Blood. Make them to be numbered with Thy Saints in glory everlasting. O Lord, save Thy people, and bless Thine heritage. Govern them, and lift them up for ever. Day by day we magnify Thee, and we worship Thy Name, ever world without end. Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin. O Lord, have mercy upon us. O Lord, let Thy mercy lighten upon us, as our trust is in Thee. O Lord, in Thee have I trusted, let me never be confounded. 20. Psalm xxxvi. 5. Thy mercy, O Lord, reacheth unto the heavens and Thy faithfulness unto the clouds. 6. Thy righteousness standeth like the strong mountains : Thy judgments are like the great deep. 21. Zechariah vi. 12. Thus speaketh the Lord of Hosts, saying, Behold the Man Whose Name is the Branch : 13. He, even He shall build the temple of the Lord ; and He shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon His throne ; and He shall be a priest upon His throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both. Art Thou the Christ ? Art Thou the Son ? The Father's Image bright ? And see we Him, Whose Arm upholds Earth and the starry height ? Yea, faith can pierce the cloud Which veils Thy glory now ; We hail Thee, God, before Whose throne The Angels prostrate bow. Our sinful pride to cure With that pure love of Thine, O be Thou born within our hearts, Most Holy Child Divine. Amen. 22. O saving Victim, slain for man, The gates of heaven to us expand; Fierce wars assail, the foes draw nigh; Grant succour, give us victory. 23. Psalm cvii. 23. The Lord will preserve their going out and their coming in ; He is with them, and will keep them, for in His Hand is every living thing, iv. 8. Lie down in peace and sleep : for Thou, O Lord, makest us to dwell in safety. 24. Psalm cxxxvii. Here by Babylon's wave The heathen hands have bound us, Tho' afar from our land, The pains of death surround us ; Sion ! thy memory still In our heart we are keeping, And still we turn to thee, Our eyes all sad with weeping. Thro* our harps that we hung on the trees, Goes the low wind wearily moaning : Mingles the sad note of the breeze, With voice as sad of sigh and groaning. When mad with wine our foe rejoices, When unto their altars they throng, Loud for mirth they call — "A Song ! A song of Sion sing, lift up your voices !" O Lord, tho' the victor command Our captivity sad and lowly, How shall we raise Thy song so holy, That we sung in our father's land, Jerusalem, if we forget thee, Let our hands remember not their power, And our tongues be silent from that hour. Jerusalem, if we forget thee. Woe unto thee! Babylon mighty city, For the day of thy fall is nigh ! For thee no hope, for thee no pity, Tho' loud thy wail riseth on high ! Then shalt thou, desolate, forsaken, Be torn from thy fanes and thy thrones. In that day shall thy babes be taken And dash'd against the stones, Then unto thee, O Babylon the mighty, Be woe, be woe, be woe ! 2 5- Job xxiii. 3. that I knew where I might find Him, that I might come even to His seat. 8. Behold, I go forward, but He is not there ; and backward, but I cannot perceive Him ; 9. on the left hand, where He doth work, but I cannot behold Him; He hideth Himself on the right hand. St. John xx. 29. Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. 26. O Saviour of the world, Who by Thy Cross and pre- cious Blood hast redeemed us, save us, and help us, we humbly beseech Thee, O Lord. 27. Psalm viii. 1. O Lord our Governor, how excellent is Thy Name in all the world : Thou that hast set Thy glory above the heavens ! 4. Lord, what is man, that Thou art mind- ful of him ? and the son of man, that Thou visitest him ? 5. Thou madest him lower than the angels, to crown him with glory and worship. 28. Psalm xxxi. 26. O love the Lord, all ye His saints : for the Lord preserveth them that are faithful, and plenteously re- wardeth the proud doer. 27. Be strong, and He shall establish your heart: all ye that put your trust in the Lord. Amen. 29. I will sing of Thy great mercies, O Lord, my Saviour, and of Thy faithfulness evermore. 3°- Psalm cxxxv. t. O praise the Lord, laud ye the Name of the Lord: praise it, O ye servants of the Lord. 2. Ye that stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God. 3. O praise the Lord, for the Lord is gracious, sing praises unto His Name, for it is lovely. 4. For why ? Thy Lord hath chosen Jacob unto Him- self, and Israel for His own possession. 5. For I know that the Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Amen. 3 1 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for He hath vis- ited and redeemed His people ; and hath raised up a mighty salvation for us, in the house of His servant David; as He spake by the mouth of His holy Prophets, which have been since the world began ; that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost ; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 3 2 < Psalm xxxiii. 21. Let Thy merciful kindness, O Lord, be upon us; as we do put our trust in Thee. Amen. 33 A Prayer. Lord, for Thy tender mercies' sake, lay not our sins to our charge, but forgive that is past, and give us grace to amend our sinful lives ; to decline from sin, and incline to virtue, that we may walk with a perfect heart before Thee now and evermore. 34- Luke ii. 15. Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 10. For the angel said unto us, Fear not: for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, Which is Christ the Lord. 35 Say, Watchman, what of the night ? Do the dews of the morning fall ? Have the orient skies a border of light, Like the fringe of a funeral pall ? The night is fast waning on high, And soon shall the darkness flee : And the morn shall spread o'er the blushing sky And bright shall its glories be. But, Watchman, what of the night, When sorrow and pain are mine ? And the pleasures of life, so sweet and bright, No longer around me shine ? That night of sorrow thy soul May surely prepare to meet : But away shall the clouds of thy heaviness roll, And the morning of joy be sweet. But, Watchman, what of the night, When the arrow of death is sped ? And the grave, which no glimmering star can light, Shall be my sleeping bed ? That night is near, and the cheerless tomb Shall keep thy body in store, Till the morn of eternity rise on the gloom, And night shall be no more. 3* O day of penitence ! O day of mourning ! Remember how the incarnate Son of God, nailed to His Cross, hung between earth and heaven, was put to death by His own people's hands, to save us all from Satan's iron bondage. He bore with patience all these cruel wrongs ! O come, let us with hearts and voices utter our grief and weep beside His tomb. Come, let us kneel, in sorrow and contrition, before the Cross which His pure Blood doth lave. Come, rich and poor, offer Him all your hearts, Who gave Himself the world to save ! Just as the sea by stormy winds is driven, whose angry waves do hoarsely rage and roar ; the people with madness to the slaughter are crowding, and shouting, " To death ! Crucify Him !" Striving to save Him, Pilate has vainly laboured : His cruel foes thirst for their Victim's Blood. Behold they crown with thorns His sacred Head ! beat Him with scourges ! and then smite Him on His Cheek ! Come, let us kneel, in sorrow and contrition, before the Cross which His pure Blood doth lave. Come, rich and poor, offer Him all your hearts, Who gave Himself the world to save ! Slowly, ah, slowly, drag on the fatal hours ! Now hav- ing drained His bitter cup of pain ; the Lamb of God completes His sacrifice; into His Father's hands com- mends His spirit, cries with loud voice, "It is finished," and expires ! Then, as He died, darkness obscured the land ; in dim eclipse the earth with horror shook ; the temple trembled, the veil was rent in twain. Come, let us kneel, in sorrow and contrition, before the Cross which His pure Blood doth lave. Come, rich and poor, offer Him all your hearts, Who gave Himself the world to save. 37' Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these Thy laws in our hearts, we beseech Thee. 38- Psalm xxiii. The Lord is my Shepherd ; I shall not want. He maketh me to rest in green pastures, He leadeth me be- side still waters, He giveth peace unto my soul: He leadeth me in paths of goodness, for His Name's sake. Yea, though I walk through death's dark vale of shad- ows, no evil will 1 fear: for Thou art still with me. Thy rod and staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest here a table for me in presence of mine enemies ; my head with oil Thou anointest ; my cup runneth over ; yea, surely peace and mercy all my life shall follow me ; and I will dwell with God for evermore. 39- When the tempests' rage is over, And its noisy tumults cease, Then the world from strife and turmoil Finds release, sweet release. Though on earth are cares and sorrows, They in time to come will cease. In the golden realms of Heaven All is peace, heavenly peace. 40, Psalm xxxiv. 1. I will alway give thanks unto the Lord ; His praise shall ever be in my mouth. 2. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord : the humble shall hear thereof and be glad. 3. O praise the Lord with me ! and let us magnify His Name together. 4. I sought the Lord, and He heard me: yea, and delivered me out of all my fears. 5. They had an eye unto Him and were lighten- ed : and their faces were not ashamed. 6. Lo, the poor erieth, and the Lord heareth him: yea, and saveth him out of all his troubles. Amen. 4i St. John i. i. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 14. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us. Psalm xlv. 3. Thou art fairer than the children of men: full of grace are thy lips, because God hath blessed thee for ever. St. Luke i. 68. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He hath visited and redeemed His people. Amen. 42. Romans xiii. 11. It is high time to awake out' of sleep, for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. 12. The night is far spent, the day is at hand; let us, therefore, cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the whole armour of light. 43 Job xix. 25. I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth : 26. And though worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God. i Corinthians xv. 20. For now is Christ risen from the dead, the first fruits of them that slept. 44. Psalm xiii. Lord, how long wilt Thou forget me, While in lonely grief I mourn, And how long Thy Face be hiding, Wilt Thou never more return ? Lord, how long must I take counsel, Having sorrow in my heart; Foes relentless rise against me, And no helper take my part ? 45- Psalm xcii. i. It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto Thy Name, O Most High. 2. To tell of Thy loving-kindness early in the morning, and of Thy truth in the night season. 12. The right- eous shall flourish like a palm-tree, and spread abroad like a cedar of Libanus. 13. Such as are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the court of the house of our God. 15. That they may show how true the Lord my Strength is, that there is no unrighteous- ness in Him. Thou, Lord, art most Highest for ever- more. To God the Father, God the Son, God the Spirit, Three in One, Praise, honour, might, and glory be, From age to age eternally. Amen. 46. Psalm iv. 9. I will lay me down in peace, and take my rest : for it is Thou, Lord, only, That makest me dwell in safety. 47- Psalm xxiii. 1. The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. 2. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He lead- eth me beside the still waters. 3. He restoreth my soul ; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness, for His Name's sake. 4. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me. 5. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I wiil dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. 4 8. Therefore, with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify Thy glori- ous Name ; evermore praising Thee, and saying, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of Thy glory: Glory be to Thee, O Lord Most High. Amen. 49. St. John xiv. 15. If ye love Me, keep My commandments. 16. And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you an- other Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever, 17. even the Spirit of truth. 5°- In humble faith and holy love, The song of saints and martyrs sing; That incense which to God above, Blest angels and archangels bring. Three mystic rays in glory shine From the tremendous Godhead's throne, These in one source doth faith combine, In three we praise One God alone. In this sad vale of tears below, Our anchor this of faith and love; Till God His vision shall bestow, In Christ's triumphant Church above. To God our Father raise the voice, Invisible, Immortal King! In our Redeemer's strength rejoice; And to the Sacred Spirit sing. Amen, 5 1 - Psalm xxxi. 2. Incline Thine Ear to me, O Lord, make haste to deliver me. O save me for Thy mercies' sake. 5 1 - It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto Thy Name, O Most Highest; to tell of Thy loving-kindness early in the morning, and of Thy truth in the night season; upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the lute; upon a loud instru- ment, and upon the harp. For Thou, Lord, hast made me glad through Thy works; and I will rejoice in giving praise for the operations of Thy Hands. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 53 Psalm lxxxiv. i. O how amiable are Thy dwellings; Thou Lord of hosts! 2. My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. 4. Blessed are they that dwell in Thy house: they will alway be praising Thee. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost ; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 54- PSALM Xix. 14. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be alway acceptable in Thy sight. 15. O Lord; my Strength, and my Redeemer. Amen. 55> I mourn as a dove, I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul. Mine eye mourneth by reason of affliction. Labour not to comfort me, for I will weep bitterly. 5 6 - The shadows of the evening hours Fall from the darkening sky, Upon the fragrance of the flowers The dews of evening lie. Before Thy throne, O Lord of heaven, We kneel at close of day; Look on Thy children from on high, And hear us while we pray. Slowly the rays of daylight fade, So fade within our heart, The hopes in earthly love and joy, That one by one depart; Slowly the bright stars, one by one, Within the heavens shine, Give us, O Lord, fresh hopes in heaven, And trust in things divine. Let peace, O Lord, Thy peace, O God, Upon our souls descend, From midnight fears and perils, Thou our trembling hearts defend ; Give us a respite from our toil, Calm and subdue our woes; Thro' the long day, we suffer, Lord, O give us now repose. 57- Psalm xxxiv. *8. O taste, and see, how gracious the Lord is: blessed is the man that trusteth in Him. 9. O fear the Lord, ye that are His saints: for they that fear Him lack nothing. 10. The lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they who seek the Lord shall want no manner of thing that is good.* n. Come, ye children, and hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord. * * Sometimes sung as a separate Anthem. 5 8. St. John xiv. 15. If ye love Me, keep My commandments. 16. And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you an- other Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever; 17. even the Spirit of truth, He dwelleth with you, He shall be in you. 26. The Comforter, yea the Holy Ghost, Whom the Father will send unto you, He shall teach you all things, and bring ail things to remem- brance, whatsoever I have said unto you. 27. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 59- O come, let us sing unto the Lord; let us heartily rejoice in the Strength of our salvation. Let us come before His Presence with thanksgiving; and show our- selves glad in Him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God ; and a great King above all gods. In His Hand are all the corners of the earth; and the strength of the hills is His also. The sea is His, and He made it; and His Hands prepared the dry land. O come, let' us worship and fall down, and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is the Lord our God; and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His Hand. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; let the whole earth stand in awe of Him. For He cometh, for He cometh to judge the earth; and with righteousness to judge the world, and the people with His truth. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 60. But the Lord is mindful of His own, He remembers His children. Bow down before Him, ye mighty, for the Lord is near us. 6i. This night I lift my heart to Thee, Whose dwelling is in heaven above; O, deign to hear and answer me, My Father, God of love ! Art Thou not, Lord in every place? Is there a thing beneath Thy care? Though angels only see Thy Face, Yet Thou, O Lord, art everywhere. O, give Thine angels charge to keep Their wings spread over me this night; Let them defend me, let me sleep, Till darkness melts in light. *The Lord is thy keeper. No evil shall befall thee, Dear object of His choice; This night our Lord will call thee, In a still, small voice. Thy God saith, they that fear Him Shall heart and soul rejoice; Then sleep, to wake and hear Him, In a still, small voice.* * * Sometimes sung as a separate Anthem. 62. Psalm civ. 24. O Lord, how manifold are Thy works; in wisdom hast Thou made them all: the earth is full of Thy riches. 13. Thou waterest the hills from above: the earth is filled with the fruit of Thy works. 14. Thou bringest forth grass for the cattle: and green herb for the service of men. Amen. 63 Thou shalt love the Lord, thy God, with all thy heart, with all thy soul, with all thy might ; and Him, only Him, shalt thou serve. 64. St. Luke xxiv. 5. Grant to us, Lord, we beseech Thee, the spirit to think and do always such things as be rightful; that we, who cannot do any thing that is good without Thee, may by Thee be enabled to live according to Thy will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 68. for a closer walk with God, A calm and heavenly frame; A light to shine upon the road That leads me to the Lamb. What peaceful hours I once enjoyed: How sweet their memory still: But they have left an aching void The world can never fill. Return, Holy Dove, return, Sweet messenger of rest: I hate the sins that made Thee mourn, And drove Thee from my breast. The dearest idol I have known, Whate'er that idol be, Help me to tear it from Thy throne And worship only Thee. So shall my walk be close with God, Calm and serene my frame; So purer light shall mark the road That leads me to the Lamb. Amen. op. Psalm xlii. i.
