LC Control Number titip96 026216 PREFACE A modern Universal Exposition well might be called an encyclopedia of society, as it contains, in highly specialized array, society's words and works. It is a collection of the wisdom and achievements of the world, brought together for the inspection of the world — for examination and study by its ex- perts. It constitutes a compact, classified, indexed compendium, available for ready reference, of the achievements and ideas of society, in all phases of its activities, extending to the most material as well as to the most refined. The Catalogue of such a Universal Exposition is, therefore, perhaps the most comprehensive and representative contemporary record of the progress and condition of tbe human race that may be devised. It is a succinct and authentic record of-the exhibits of the Exposition, which are the evidences of the capacity and performance in all lines, intellectual, social and industrial, of all of the peoples of the world. The value of such a document and its signifi- cance, socially and commercially, are incalculable. It is an epitome of the capacity and promises of mankind, while being at the same time a roll of honor — a certified register of those individuals and institutions which are tak- ing active part in the life of the world to-day.
