DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, Was ceded (o the United States in 1790, by the States of Maryland and Virginia, for the seat of the National Government. This District contains a tract of land ten miles square, lying on both sides of the Potomac river, about one hundred and twenty miles from its mouth ; and is divided into two Counties, viz: Washington and Alexandria. It is governed by the laws of the former States, but Congress is invested with power to administer such laws as the public good sh^* from time to time require. WASHINGTON CITY, Is situated on the Maryland side of the Potomac, on a point of land formed by the confluence of the east branch wiih the main river, on a high plea- sant plain, with a sufficient proportion of risings to contribute to health, beauty and convenience. The Capitol stands on a beautiful eminence, se- venty-eight feet above the level of the tide. The situation not only commands a handsome view of thij City, but an extensive prospect of ^le adjacent 4 THE AMERtCAN DIRECTORY, country. The first session of Congress that was held in this Capitol commenced in Dec. 1800. — This building was destroyed by the English in the late war, but has since been rebuilt in a superior style. The President's House is situated on rising ground, one mile from the Capitol, built of hand- some freestone on an extensive plan, being 170 by 85 feet, possessing a delightful view of the Capitol, River and compact part of the City. This City was laid out on a grand and extensive scale, having a large number of streets running due east and west, north and south ; the former extending from Rock creek to the East branch, — about four and a half miles ; and the latter from the Potomac, about two and a half. In addition to these, there are Avenues in various directions, from 130 to 160 feet in width, which form spa- cious squares where they intersect other streets. Fifteen of these avenues derive their names from the fifteen States previous to the admission of Ten- nessee ; seven of these lead from the Capitol. — The side walks of the Pennsylvania avenue are paved with brick, and from the Capitol *j the com- pact part of the City is pleasantly ornamented with shady trees. This delightful City contains between 900 and 1000 houses, many of which are built in a superior style. Lat. 38 deg. 45 min N.—- Long. 77 deg. 15 min. W. This City is now governed by a Mayor, eight Alder- men, and forty-eight Common Councilmen, elected annu- ally by the people. The streets of this City are laid out very irregularly, having been, as is supposed, in a hurry to build, and not thinking that the groAvth would iiave been so rapid. The ancient buildings, however, in the principal parts of the City, have been removed within 20 years past, and new edifices elected, that do honour to the euterpiise of both owners and mechanics.
