The Conservatory is established for the purpose of giving the pupil such an acquaintance with the fundamental principles of Music, such use of the Piano and Organ, and such skill in reading and composing, and mastery of the voice, as will render future attainments possible and easy. A thorough knowledge of the vocal organs, anatomical and physiological, with their structural relations, and an even and correct development of the voice, will occupy the first attention. Qraduation. — Graduates of College who shall have completed any one of the above courses satisfactorily, vv^ill be awarded a Diploma from the Univer- sity. Pupils other than college graduates can receive a Diploma on having satisfactorily completed one of the above courses, provided they have passed successfully the New York State Regents' Examinations, and have mastered two Modern Languages, or Latin and one Modern Language. DEGREES. Students who have sustained a good moral character, and satisfacto- rily completed either of the prescribed Courses, will be admitted to a Degree, the Degree corresponding to the Course, as follows : Bachelor of Arts, for the Classical Course; Laureate of Ahts, Bachelor of Science or Philosophy, determined by the Electives of the Literary and Scientific Course; Bachelor of Industrial Mechanics, for the Course of Industrial Mechanics; Bachelor or Lauheate of Education, for the Normal or Teachers' Course. ALFRED UNIVERSITY. 19 L(3CATI0N. The Institution is located at Alfred, Alleganj^ Co., N. Y., two miles from the Alfred Depot of the Erie Railway. The location is retired and healthy — in a rural district, surrounded bj^ de- lightful scenery, amid a peo})le of integrity, and of industrious and unobtru- sive habits. Students are not exposed here to many of the ordinary allure- ments to vice and dissipation. Few spots are so well adapted to the quiet and successful pursuit of Science and Literature as the village of Alfred. GOVERNMENT. SOCIETIES. The Alleghanian, the Orophiliun, the Alfriedian, and the Athenaean are the permanently organized Societies of the Institution. They are managed with ability, and are important aids to those who are desirous of becoming good writers and speakers. CABINETS. Respectable collections have already been made in Archaeology, Palaeontolo- gy, and several departments of Natural History. These, together with other collections offered to the University, as soon as an appropriate build- ing is provided for them, will be properly arranged and moved in the Muse- um of Kenyon Memorial Hall, now in progress of erection. OBSERVATORY. The object of the Observatory is two-fold, viz., to facilitate instruction in Astronomy, and to perform such astronomical work as time, limited by class- room duties, will allow. The Observatory building consists of a circular room surmounted by a re- volving dome 19 feet in diameter, a computing room 12x18, a prime vertical room 12x13, a transit room 12x20, and a clock room 8x20. The Observatory is furnished with the following instruments: I. An equatorial refracting telescope, by Henry Fitz, with an object glass of 9 inch clear aperture, and 9.5 feet focus. II. A meridian circle, by Wm. J. Young, with an object glass by Merz & Mahler, Germany, of 3.25 inch clear aperture, and 4.5 feet focus. The circle is 20 inches in diameter, and reads by 4 verniers to 3 seconds of space. III. A siderial chronometer. IV. A filar micrometer. Value, $125. Students in Astronomy have the privileges of the Observatory without ex- tra charge. LIBRARY. The Institution Library consists of a choice selection of Histories, Biogra- phies, Greek and Latin Classics, Mathematical and Scientific works, and standard English Literature. Additions arc made to it yearly. GYMNASIUM. The Gymnasium Association have recently erected a beautiful Iniilding on the Institution grounds, for gymnastic exercise, where will be found the proper apparatus for use. CALENDAR.— 1877-8.
