The average player will spend twenty years selecting certain lines, and meanwhile he has delved into so many variations which fill his mind to such an extent that he has no brain space left for strong lines of play. I believe the reader will agree with me when I state that there is a limit to the human brain, otherwise a world's champion would never lose a game. It took the writer twenty-five years to collect these ffames, which have been selected from all sources and I have given credit as near as possible. If the reader will concentrate on these lines and not allow himself to be sidetracked on other lines, he will soon be able to hold his own with very good players. Do not try to solve problems, but commit them to memory, at least one end-game problem daily. The play is arranged so that the student will have a nucleus to build on when ready to branch into two-move style of play. The method and matter of the book are both obvious and students will discover its scope and character by simply turning over the leaves, hence no detailed exhibit of the plan seems to be called for. The black pieces always occupy the first twelve small numbers, thus: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. The white pieces, therefore, will occupy the last twelve numbers, thus: 21, 22, 23, 24, 2>5, 26 27, 2S, 29, 30, 31, 32. The first move is invariably made by the player having the black pieces. And the player shall play alternately with the blacks and v^^hites. Thus the numbering will change from one side to the other. This board is eight feet square and is formed in the ground by means of slabs of iron, which form the black or playing squares of the board, the white squares being filled in with concrete. This large checker board has iron men which weigh fifteen pounds, measuring six inches in diam- eter, boss inside, with a large keyhole into which iron cleeks the length of walking canes are inserted, by which each player moves his men. The black men are round, the w^hite men square, and w^hen a piece is crowned the bottom piece is turned up with a rim embossed side to denotie a king. There is also a concrete walk around the board, with several benches set around for the benefit of spectators. The games are remarkable as they show how it is possible for the Black and White pieces to change places. In No. 7 the object is attained with the fewest possible number of kings. In No. 8 White is handicapped by being compelled to copy every move that Black makes. Of course no piece must ever be left where it *could be taken. Some of our readers may find it amusing to try to work out a similar game for themselves. Most of the play in No. 7 is by Dr. Brown, and No. 8 was shown to Mr. Jordan by A. Woolhouse. They range from pinochle to prize fighting. Checkers is only one of this number. More than two hundred champions are recorded in the books. We are always engaged in some kind of a struggle ; always "playing the game" somehow or other. It may be a competition against other human beings, or it may be a fight against circumstances. Probably there isn't a day when you do not have a chance to show whether you are "a good sport." — Fulierton.
