 The number following the name in this work is the number of the gener- 
 ation to which the person belongs, which can be traced by referring to the 
 outline pages at the beginning — the first one of the name that we have any 
 record of being taken as generation No. 1 . Blank pages are for any data that 
 you may wish to record in regard to the names on opposite page. At the 
 back are pages for records of births, marriages and deaths, and we ask that 
 you keep a record of your family here as complete as possible as it may be of 
 assistance to some in the future, who may wish to bring this history up to a fu- 
 ture date.

PREFACE. 
 
 In preparing this brief history of the Ballybay, Ireland, branch of 
 the Moffett family, we have endeavored to make it as complete as pos- 
 sible with the facilities we had at hand. We worked with the hope that 
 some member of the branch with more time and means at their command 
 might be able at some future time to make it more complete, which may 
 be done by continuing the history of the families given, tracing those not 
 given and by searching old records of land t ties. leases, army records, 
 church records, etc.. in Ireland, and thereby trying to trace the family 
 farther back than where this history begins. 
 
 There are many different branches of the Moffelts in the U. S.. 
 many of whom came here between 1 600 and 1 700. The spelling of 
 the name differs slightly in the families and we also find that the spelling 
 sometimes differs among members of the same family. We find all the 
 vowels used in both the first and last syllables giving us many combinations. 
 
 Some of the most striking spellings are Maphet. Miffit. Morfot. 
 Mophat. Muffat, Moffette. Mofht. Maffet. Moffal. Maffitt. etc. 
 
 But no matter what the spelling, they are all supposed to come from 
 the same origin. Almost every family has some tradition as to the origin 
 of the name. There are two principal theories as to the origin; one that 
 the name and family carrying it originated near the present town of 
 Moffat. Scotland, the other that it came from Italy with the spread of 
 the Christian religion up through France. Normandy. England, and thence 
 into Scotland. 
 
 It is supposed that the forefathers of our branch came from Eng- 
 land to Ireland about the time King William conquered the north of 
 Ireland. But the fact is not certain. 
 
 Martha Moffett. 4. daughter of James Moffet. 3. was the first of 
 the Ballybay branch to emigrate to America, coming about 1835, to 
 Central Illinois. 
 
 In preparing this work we tried to get the same facts from each 
 one so as to have the biographies about equal, but found it hard to do. 
 Some were reluctant to send in what they could, and some could not 
 send in what was required, from neglect of having kept the important 
 dates in the lives of their parents and grandparents. Others responded 
 Willingly and were glad to do all they could to help along, for which we 
 are very grateful, and to one and all who have aided us in any way we

want to here express our thanks and appreciation of their aid. We hope 
 that the next who tries the work may find in this some records that may 
 help him. 
 
 We cannot help but feel the mistake that we all make in not keep- 
 ing a record of the important dates in our lives when we undertake a 
 work of this kind. This work may contain some mistakes, but we have 
 tried to get the data as near correct as possible, and have put the material 
 in just as received from the parties sending it in. 
 
 A tradition gives the oldest mention of the name (Moffett) as in 
 1 066, when the Norman Knight, William de Moffette, came with the 
 invading force of William the Conqueror, into England. 
 
 Authentic church records show that Nicholde de Moffat, Archdeacon 
 of Tivotdale, became Bishop of Glasgow, in 1268. 
 
 There is a genealogy in preparation of all the Moffat Clan in 
 America, by Geo. W, Maffet, of Lawrence, Kas., as editor and his- 
 torian in chief, aided by several other branch historians. The above work, 
 if finished, may contain a copy of this work.

 1. James Moffett. (1 ). 
 
 Nothing known of him except that he had at least two 
 children, John and Isabella ; only one son; may have had more 
 than one daughter. 
 
 GENERATION NO. 2. 
 
 2. John Moffett. 2. (James 1). 
 
 Came from Farney, near Carrickmacross. to Ballybay. 
 County Monaghan, Ireland. hie married Elizabeth Ritchie, 
 eldest daupfttr of Robert Ritchie, who owned part of the 
 townland of Crievagh, Ballybay. Robert Ritchie had three 
 daupihtcrs, the second of whom married James McMullen, and 
 the third. David Williamson, father of Robert Williamson. 
 The three sisters inherited their father's portion of the town- 
 land of Crievagh. and Elizabeth's inheritance is still in the 
 family. 
 
 John Moffett was a roadmaker. He had six children — 
 James. Nancy. John. David. Elizabeth (Betty), and Ritchie. 
 He died at the age of 96 and was buried in the burying ground 
 of tic Derryvalley Presbyterian meeting-house, where his wife 
 also is buried. The following anecdote is told about him. 
 He was the owner of a race horse, which was stolen from 
 him. He followed it on foot and traced it to Dublin. On 
 going to the police, they advised him to go down in the 
 evening to the River Liffey and watch them bring down the 
 horses to drink. The second night he went he saw his horse, 
 and takins! some police with him on the following night, seized 
 it. and rode back to Crievagh in triumph. He was a great 
 rider, and when at full gallop could pick up a hat from the 
 road. He was very athletic and could jump as high as his 
 own head. 
 
 3. Isabella Moffett. 2 (James 1). 
 
 Was married to a Mr. Martin and had at least one 
 child. Archie Martin (We have not traced this family).

 4. James Moffftt. 3 (John 2. James 1). 
 
 First cl.ild of John MofTett and Ehzabeth Ritchie, born 
 1774, at Crievagh, and married Elizabeth McCaU. He and 
 all his descendants were members of the Covenanting Church, 
 which he joined on his marr.age to Miss McCall. He had 
 six children, Thomas, Nancy. Martha. John, David and Eliza- 
 beth. The last four emigrated to America. He emigrated in 
 1842 to Edwardsvill, 111.. U. S. A., where he lived with his 
 son John until the t me of his death, Oct. 12. 1842. 
 
 5. Nancy Moffett. 3 (John 2. James I ). 
 
 Second child, married Archie Greer, as second wife. 
 and had six children. Timothy. John, James. Bess. Sally and 
 Jane. (This family we have not traced farther). The only 
 information we could gel in regard to this family was, that 
 two sisters, grandchildren of Nancy Moflett. came to New 
 ^'ork City, years ago. but we have no trace of them farther. 
 
 6. John Moffett. 3 (John 2. James I). 
 
 Third child, born November. 1783. Died February 18. 
 1869. Buried in Derryvalley. where there is a white marble 
 stone with the following inscription: "In memory of John 
 Moflett. of Crievagh, who died Feb. 18, 1869, aged 86; 
 also of Atmes. wife of the above, who died Sept. 10. 1872. 
 aged 81 years." He was born, lived and died at the old 
 homestead Crievagh, and was always looked up to by his 
 neighbors as a just, honorable and trustworthy man who was 
 ready to assist by sound advice. Like many farmers of that 
 time he was skilled in linen weaving by hand, a prosperous in- 
 dustry, formerly, in the north of Ireland. He was a mem- 
 ber of the Derryvalley Presbyterian Church, in which he took 
 an active part as teacher and superintendent of the Sunday 
 school, and as an elder of the church. He was married to 
 Agnes W ylie, daughter of Adam Wylie and Jane Horner. 
 and had nine children. Robert. Ritchie, Adam. James. Jane, 
 Elizabeth. John. Thomas. Joseph. 
 
 7. Da\id Moffett. 3 (John 2. James 1). 
 
 Fourth child, was of a w^ld disposition and led a dissolute 
 life; was no! married; was very strong physically. 
 
 8. Elizabeth Moffett. 3 (John 2. James 1). 
 
 Fifth child, was married to John Carson, in 1822, and 
 died in Ireland in 1845. being buried in the Crievagh Coven- 
 anting meeting-house green. After her death her husband and 
 family moved to Central Illinois. U. S. A., where there are 
 many descendants. Her children were, Thomas, El za Ann. 
 Nancy. John. Jane. Isabel and Richard, and another who 
 died in infancy. (Her husband. John Carson, was born about 
 1798. died October, 1847. at Elkhorn. Illinois, U. S. A. 
 He came to Illinois from Knocaturly. Ireland, in 1846). 
 
9. Ritchie Moffett. 3 (John 2. James 1). 
 
 Sixth child; was a clerk in Monaghan Inn. Died of 
 consumption, aged about 25. Had a hare's Lp. Was not 
 married.

 10. Thomas Moffett. 4 (James 3. John 2. James 1). 
 
 First child of James Moffett and Elizabeth McCall. 
 Married to Sarah Graham; had eight children. James, George. 
 Eliza. John. Susan. Thomas. Sarah and Jane. To his credit 
 and that of his descendents it should be stated that he reared 
 his family on his small farm in Crievagh of four and one half 
 acres, the family now among them possessing a large number 
 of farms.

 Third child, born about 1810. She married William 
 Cobine about 1835, in Ireland. Thev came to America about 
 1835 or '36. and settled in Edwardsville. Illinois. Died 1887. 
 Was a Presbyterian, had six children. Mary E.. James D.. 
 Samuel. Elizabeth M.. Margaret and Thomas S. Martha 
 was the first of the Ballybay Moffetls to emigrate to America. 
 Her husband died August 4. 1861.

 Fourth child, born January 9. 1812. in County Monag- 
 han. Ireland. Came to America in January. 1839. Settled 
 at Edwardsville. Illinois. He left his home in Ireland for 
 America a few nights before the big wind of January. 1839. 
 Married November 30. 1841. at Wood River, Illinois, to 
 Jane Orr. a daughter of a Covenanting minister. Died in St. 
 Louis. December 2. 1873. Had four children. Margaret. 
 Thomas J.. John C. and David H. His wife died May 15.

 Married March. 1846. at Edwardsville. 111., to Nancy Orr. 
 Died December 9. 1900. at Peabody, Kansas. Was a tailor 
 and teamster. Was a Reformed Presbyterian. Had two chil- 
 dren. Lizzie and Joseph Orr. His wife died September 30. 
 1899. 
 
 15. Elizabeth Moffett. 4 (James 3, John 2. James 1). 
 
 Sixth child, born June 15. 1821, at Crievagh. County 
 Monaghan, Ireland. Came to America in 1842, with her

father and brother David. Married at Edwardsville, IlHnois, 
 to Thomas Matthews, as first husband. Married secondly, 
 Oc!ober. 1864, to WiHiam Stevenson. Died April 15. 1901. 
 Was a Reformed Presbyterian. Had six children, five by first 
 marriage. Elizabeth M.. Nancy J.. James A., Thomas W., 
 James T. and William Moffett. 
 
 16. Robert Moffett, 4 (John 3. John 2, James 1). 
 
 First child of John Moffett and Agnes Wylie. Born 
 December 15, 1813, at Crievagh. Was tall and strong and 
 very steady. \X'ent to America about 1838. Died from 
 quinsy in Irish llollow. near Hanover. Ilhnois, about 1840. 
 and vv'as buried in the old city cemetery at Galena, Illinois. 
 Was not married. 
 
 17. Ritchie Moffett. 4 (John 3. John 2. James 1). 
 
 Second child, born November. 1815. at Crievagh. Early 
 in life he decided to study for the ministry. Was for a time 
 on ti.e Manchester Town Mission, then went to Rotherham 
 College. Yorkshire, in 1845, ar.d in August, 1849, com- 
 menced his ministry at the West End Congregational Church. 
 Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire, having received a unanimous in- 
 vitation from that church. Was ordaned on October 3 1 . of 
 the same year. He spent the whole of his active ministry in 
 that church, retiring in 1879. He took an active interest in 
 all religious, polit cal and educational movements. Married in 
 1857. to Sarah Miles Forded, daughter of a Wesleyan min- 
 ister, died suddenly at Sowerby Bridge, of heart failure. Janu- 
 ary 9. 1883. and was buried in the Sowerby Bridge ceme- 
 tery, a gray granite stone marking the spot. Height. 5 feet. 
 I0'/2 inches, weight. 213 pounds; had four children. Agnes 
 Miles. Florence Elizabeth. John Ritchie and Ethel Catherine. 
 
 18. Adam Moffett. 4 (John 3. John 2. James 1 ). 
 
 Third child, born May 25. 1818. at Crievagh: worked 
 the farm at the old homestead during the whole of his life 
 Was a Sunday school teacher and elder of the Derryvalley 
 Presbyterian church; was not married; had a great deal of 
 quiet humor and was very fond of children. D.ed at Crievagh 
 House. February, 1887, and was buried in Derryvalley. 
 
 19. James Moffett, 4 (John 3. John 2. James 1). 
 
 Fourth child, born April. 1820. at Crievagh. Ballyhay. 
 County Monaghan. Ireland; baptized July 9. 1820. at Derry- 
 valley Church. Crievagh Parish. Tullycorbit. Came to 
 America in 1840; mined in the Elizabeth lead mines for a 
 while, tl en settled on a farm in Jo. Daviess Co., near Zioii, 111. 
 In later years he moved to Harper, Kans., with his family. 
 He was a United Presbyterian and an elder in that church at 
 Zion, 111. December 12, 1848. at Hanover. 111., he v/as mar- 
 ried to Miss Isabelle McCall. He was a man of more than 
 ordinary influence in the community in which he lived. He

died in Chicapo where he had gone for medical treatment. 
 
 and was buried at Harper, Kans.

 Fifth child, born December 15. 1822. at Crievagh, 
 County Monaghan. Ireland. She was married January 1 7. 
 1845. The Derryvalley Presbyterian Church marriage regis- 
 try bears this record: "On Friday, the 17th of Jan.. 1845. 
 at the house of John Moffelt. of Crievagh. Jane Moffett. a 
 member of this congregation, to John Nesbitt, of the congre- 
 gation of First. Ballybay. David Bell. Pastor." She came to 
 America with her I usband after her marriage. He having 
 been in America previous to returning to Ireland for her. They 
 resided on a farm near Hanover. III. In 1883 they moved to 
 Pawnee, Neb., wl er** part of their cli.ldren were located. She 
 di<d January 8. 1889. at Pawnee, Neb., and is buried in the 
 Old Log Church cemetery, near Hanover. Ill , beside her hus- 
 band; a large granite stone marks the graves. She was the

 John D.. Fllcn. Josiah. Elizabeth, Adda Bell, Thomas and 
 Mary Essie. 
 
 21. Elizabeth Moffett, 4 (Join 3. John 2. James 1). 
 
 Sixth child, born April. 1825. at Crievagh. Lived with 
 her brother Adam, at Crievagh House. Was very strong and 
 worked very hard, especially at outdoor pursuits. Was pos- 
 sessed of exceptional mental and physical activity, which she 
 still displays at an advanced age. Is noted in the neighborhood 
 for her business capacity and generosity. In 1876, she made a 
 prolonged visit to U. S. A., where she visited a large number 
 of relatives and friends. Address, Crievagh House, Ballybay, 
 Ireland. 
 
 22. John Moffett. 4 (John 3. John 2. James I). 
 
 Seventh child, born March, 1837, at Crievagh. Died of 
 consumption at the age of 9. 
 
 23. Thomas Moffett, 4 (lohn 3. John 2. James I). 
 
 Eiphth child, horn March. 1831. at Crevagh. Bally- 
 bay. Ireland. Baptized March 20. 1831. He received his 
 education under John Ritchie and other teachers there. On 
 the 17th of March. 1848. he started for America, setting sail 
 in April, on the sailing vessel. St. George, under Captain Fer- 
 ris, landing in America after a good passage of thirty-two days. 
 He settled at Hanover. Illinois, where he taught school for a 
 time, then farmed. On November I. 1855. he was married 
 to Mary Oliver, a daughter of William Oliver, and resides on 
 While Thorn Cottage farm in Derinda toNvTiship, near Han- 
 over, Ills. Mary Oliver died August 10, 1874. Is buried in

the Log church cemetery near h^anover. On NovemSer 7. 
 1878. he was married to Dorcas Thompson. He had nme 
 children, eight by the first marriage, Thomas O.. Wilham 
 Ohver. Jane, Agnes. Robert. George. John James, Adam and 
 Mary. Address. Hanover, IUino"s. Second wife died April 
 22, 1888. 
 
 24. Joseph Moffett. 4 (John 3, John 2, James 1). 
 
 Ninth child, born July 1 , 1 834. at Crievagh. Entered 
 the Countess of Huntingdon's College. Cheshunt. England. 
 September 4. 1854. and on leaving college in 1858. ministered 
 successively in Winchester. Gainsbro. Macelesfield and Ponte- 
 fract. After retiring from the ministry, in 1879, «pent 5onie 
 years in N. Wales and in London, to facilitate the education of 
 his children ard returned to the old homestead. Crievagh House, 
 Ballybay, Ireland, where he resided until the time of his death, 
 Sept. II. 1907. Interred at Derryvalley. Married June 3, 
 1862, Ellen Caroline Drew, of Winchester, and had eight 
 children, Robert John, Caroline Agnes, Elizabeth Jane, 
 Francis foseph, Arthur James, Harriet, Ernest Cornelius, Chris- 
 topher John. 
 
 25. THoMAs Carson. 4 (Elizabeth 3. John 2, James 1). 
 
 First child of Eli/ai)cth Moffett and John Carson, was 
 born at Knocaterly, Ireland. County Monaghan. in 1823. came 
 to America and settled in Southern Illinois, in 1846. Was a 
 farmer. Was not married and died near St. Louis in 1852. 
 
 26. Eli/.a Ann Carson, 4 (Elizabeth 3, John 2, James I). 
 
 Second child, born at Knocaterlcy. County Monaghan, 
 Ireland, in 1825. Came to America with the family and set- 
 tled with her father on a farm at Elkhorn. 111., where she was 
 married January 17. 18-19. to John McClay. She resided at 
 F.lkhorn. Washington County. III.; occupation farming. Mem- 
 ber of the Covenanter Church. Had seven children, all of 
 whom are married and settled nearby: John Carson. Nancy 
 Jane, Rebecca Ann. David Moffett, Elizabeth Mary. Emma 
 Isabella and James Renwick. Her husband died March I . 
 1 882. Died at her home on the farm where she had lived 
 54 years. July 4. 1903, of paralysis, aged 78; buried at 
 Oakdale. 111. ' 
 
 27. Nancy Carson, 4 (Elizabeth 3, John 2, James I ). 
 
 Third child, born at Knocaterly. Ireland, in 1827. came 
 to America with the rest of the family and settled with her 
 father at Elkhorn, III., where she was married in 1848. to 
 David McClay. After marriage she lived at Elkhorn and 
 Oakdale. 111. Her husband was a farmer. They were mem- 
 bers of the Covenanter Church. She had two children, Rebec- 
 ca Jane and Elizabeth Moffett. She died October 9. 1898. of 
 hemorrhage of the lungs, having outlived her husband and both 
 children. The last few years of her life were spent at Beaver 
 Fall, Pa., with her grandsons who were there at college.

 Fourth child, born at Knocaterly. Ireland, in 1860. came 
 to America with the family and settled with his father at Elk- 
 horn, 111. He was married October, 1849, to El.zabeth Car- 
 son. He was an e.xtensive farmer, and well-lo-do financially. 
 Member of the Covenanter Church. Had six children. Mary 
 Elizabeth. John. William Henry. John MofTctt, Robert S. 
 David Preston. His wife died June 23, 1889. He died 
 December 12, 1900. of paralysis. A kind, loving. Christian 
 man.

 Joseph, Samuel and Andrew. Was a farmer in Clontibret,
