A Trip Over the Crookedest Railroad in the World. Mt. Tamalpais. Mount Tamalpais. California. 2592 feet in height, stands guard at the entrance to San Francisco bay. The trip from San Francisco to the summit is made in about two hours. Leaving the Union Ferry Depot, the ferry boat skirts the wharves of the metropolis affording an excellent view of the shipping and the many points of interest such as Telegraph Hill, with its houses clinging to the edge of precipitous cliffs. Fort Mason and the Presidio, with its military aspect, the ('.olden Gate. Alcatraz Island with its military prison and fortifications. Angel Island. Ume Point and the Government Res- ervations to the right, where on the bluffs above are seen the mammoth disappearing guns of the coast defense. Arriving at Sausalito the picturesque city built upon the hillside, change is made to a third rail electric railroad, the first of its kind in the state. A six mile trip along the shores of Richardson's bay brings the traveler to Mill Valley at the foot of Tamalpais where change is made to the observation cars of the Tamalpais Scenic Railroad. The trip up the mountain is now commenced. The train enters a forest of redwood trees for which California is famous, winding its tortuous way np the Blithedale canyon, swinging 'back across the face of the mountain, leaving below the towering redwood trees and wooded canyons and affording magnificent views of the surrounding country. There are 281 curves in a distance of eight and one-fifth miles. The longest piece of straight track is 413 feet. At the Double Bow Knot the track parallels itself five times in a distance of 300 feet. The average grade is 5 per cent, the maximum 7 per cent. The Tavern of Tamalpais is situated near the summit in a sheltered nook and is open all the year. From the top of Tamalpais a vast panorama is seen. 'Plie Sierra Nevada mountains. 155 miles distant. Mt. Hamilton to the South. Mt. Diablo to the Fast. Mt. St. Helena with its gray volcanic cone 56 miles to the North, while at one's feet lie the great metropolis, the cities about the bay, the Pacific Ocean, the Farallones and other points of interest.
