Memorial Address on Deceased Members of the Allegheny County Bar, Veterans of the War 1861-1865, Hon. Charles F. ?v!cKenna Member of Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania Transfer »» -^^ o-tfice Library Pension <-'TTi<-t; Au g. 2, 1933 New Building, Grant and Parkman Boulevards ■ Pittsburgh ;announcement The Historical Society of Western Penns3'lvania reports as an auspicious feature of the opening of the Centennial Anniversary of the incorpora- tion of the City of Pittsburgh, in the year A. D. 1816, the completion of an official compilation of the names of the one hundred and six resident members of the Bar of the City of Pittsburgh, w^ho in 1861- 1865 ansv^^ered the calls of President Lincoln for soldiers and sailors to defend the American Union. The Society procured this valuable historical record through the courtesy of the Allegheny County Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Committee, whose statistician, Mr. Earl PI. Bengough, prepared said rolls from the County archives used in the preparation of the bronze mural tablets installed in the corridors of the Soldier's Memorial Hall to the memory of the soldiers of the County serving in the w^ar of the Union. The clerical and medical professions of Allegheny County also nobly responded to the same calls for duty to the Nation and rendered most conspicuous services throughout the period of the war. The Historical Society trusts that the action of the members of the legal fraternity in honor of the Civil War veterans of their profession will serve as a stimulas to other professions of Allegheny County to furnish this Society an official roll of honor of all members of their organizations who participated in the Civil War. Of the one- hundred and six names on the roll of members of the Bar of Pittsburgh who served in the military service of the United States, in the war cf 1861-1865, it is a melancholy fact that less than a dozen still survive to practice in the Courts. Allegheny County Court House Erected 1B41, Destroyed by Fire .May i88a This temple of justice, the second edihc-e of its kind, erected by th^ County, in addition to having become famous by reason of the many celebrated Court trials within its walls, also acquired distinction during the early days of the Civil War by the use of its grounds for drilling of the companies being recruited for the war and also for the nume-rous local companies of "Home Guards/' 3^011 of llonor There is a heritage of heroic example and noble obligation not reckoned in the wealth of nations, but essential to the nation's life.
