' -^^jm^ (:|;iss B~ ^^1 PRESENTIyn ITl— THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN BY FREDERICK HILL MESERVE 1^ An Advertisement of A Book which will contain Photographic Prints of all known Photographs of Abraham Lincoln, printed from the Original Negatives, and from Copies of the Daguerreotypes, Ambrotypes, and Photographs, with the History of each Portrait. NEW YORK OCTOBER, 1910 ./AS? i THE BOOK THERE is now in preparation a sumptuous book of the Photographs of Abraham Lincoln from the collection of Frederick Hill Meserve of New York, which is believed to contain all of the known photographs of the great War President. This work, to be on a scale not attempted hitherto, is designed to be the authority on the subjed. It will be the permanent record of the real Lincoln. From these photographs all the engravings, etchings, litho- graphs and paintings have been made, with the exception of the very few paintings made from life. The paper will be of the higher grade, hand made, with size of page about 9x11 inches. The text will be printed from clear, large type, with wide margins. 1 The frontispiece will be an excep- tionally fine photograph accompanied with a letter in facsimile from Mr. Robert T. Lincoln in which he ^ates his preference for it as the be^ likeness of his father. THE TEXT In addition to a descriptive mono- graph there will be a numbered lift corresponding to the chronological arrangement of the photographs. This lift will consift of data gathered from many sources concerning the time, place and conditions of the making of the portraits, credit being given, as far as may be, to the sources from which the information and portraits were obtained. THE PHOTOGRAPHS The photographic prints will be made in black and white, on high grade portrait paper of carte-de- 2 visite size, the size in vogue during the Civil War. Some are from the original negatives themselves. Where copies of other photographs have been made great care has been taken to use the originals without re-touching. A fevv^ of the portraits show scratches and defeds of the films and varnish, but even when made from faded and poor, but often rare originals, they are not less intere^ing and valuable. Of some photographs that were widely circulated during Lincoln's life only a few copies are known to-day. The colledion will be confined to life photographs. Copies of paint- ings and engravings, which are often erroneously included under this head, will not be used. In addition to nearly 1 00 of the portraits of Lincoln there will be contemporary life photographs of 3 Mrs. Lincoln and the three sons, the Vice-Presidents, and members of the Cabinets, comprising in all about 1 20 portraits. THE EDITION Only 100 numbered and signed copies of the book will be made, and of these about 90 will be for sale. The book will be privately printed and without copyright. THE PRICE The price will be $35 for each copy, payable upon delivery, car- riage paid. If the hi^orical value of the text and lis, the coS of paper, printing, binding, and of the labor of prepar- ation, should be entirely eliminated, this price for the photographs of Lincoln alone, some of which are very rare and not to be found else- where, would not be excessive. 4 The book will be attradlively bound in boards. If desired it will be delivered in sheets for private binding. SUBSCRIPTION Subscriptions will be filled in the order received and copies numbered to correspond. As about 1 2,000 photographic prints mu^ be made for the edition and each copy pre- pared separately, the books can only be delivered as made, several months being required to complete them all. It is believed that the small number will be quickly taken by colledors of Lincolniana, libra- ries, hiflorical societies, and lovers of rare books. 19 F. H.
