A CHRONOLOGY AND PRACTICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY OF MODERN GERMAN LITERATURE COMPILED BT JOHN SCHOLTE NOLLEN PROFESSOR OF GERMAN IN INDIANA CNrVBRSITT CHICAGO SCOTT, FORESMAN AND COMPANY 1903 .^\') '7 1. 3 / COPYRIGHT, 1903, BY SCOTT, FOEESMAN AND COMPANY BOBX. O. LAW CO., PRINTKKS AlfD BUrDHKS, OHIOAGO. TTPOGBAPHT BY MABSH, AITKBN & CURTIS COMPANT CHICAGO Co i^^ piotiitt PREFACE The Chronology and Bibliography here given were originally intended to supplement a brief outline of the history of German literature written for the texts of the Lake German Series ; but as the material grew far beyond the limits of an appendix, it was thought best to rearrange and round out this material so as to form an independent work of more general value. Since the attempt was made to cover, in a small volume, the whole field of modern German literature, from Luther to the present day, anything like an exhaustive treatment was of course out of the question. In general, only such authors are included in the Bibliography as appear in the outline, such as must inevitably be mentioned in any rapid survey of modern German literature. The compiler is well aware that the selection here made is open to criticism at a great many points; but in the difficult task of choosing some two hundred names from the great roll of modern German authors, he has at least done his best to avoid caprice and to weigh absolute and historical values impartially. The bibliographical and critical references are intend- ed to include only what is best, or at least what is good ; to save space, full titles are given only where they are necessary to indicate the character of the work in question. As the Bibliography is designed, in part, to serve as a guide in the purchase of books, prices are generally quoted, and the latest editions noted. For the sake of the great majority who need to get a 6 PREFACE maximum amount of good literature at a minimum cost, as much care has been taken to mention reliable cheap editions and inexpensive monographs, as to include the standard works. Eeferences are given to articles in periodicals only in the case of a few recent authors, for whom little or no material is available in book form. To facilitate instant reference, the names of the authors included in Part II are given in a single alphabetical list, and cross- references are given at the close of each item, as well as in the Index. In the General Bibliography, as in the Bibliography of Authors, the aim of the compiler has been above all practical, with the thought that a few titles of books that are really authoritative will be of more value than a very long list of books, many of which are either out of date or of little value. For the same reason, the attempt has been made to indicate briefly the character and value of the works listed. Special attention has been given here to the compilation of a representative list of collected essays and of works on the theory of literature, as these are less apt to be generally known than their importance warrants. The compiler has made use of the bibliographical helps mentioned in Part I, Section D, and of others; he also had the advantage of drawing upon the resources of the Eoyal Library of Berlin for many of the refer- ences given. He has adopted, in a modified form, the consecutive numbering device used by Professor von Bahder in his philological Grundriss, and by Professor R. M. Meyer in his Gru7idriss der neuern deutsclien Lit- teraturgescJiicMe. The compilation of the present vol- ume was practically completed when Professor Meyer's excellent work appeared, so that the latter could only be used as a check upon the material here given, instead PREFACE 7 of the great labor-saving source it might otherwise have been. The Chronology is made comparative, with par- ticular attention to French, English, and American literature and history, aside from the German, as these will furnish the best setting to the German for Amer- ican students. The greatest pains have been taken to make the data of this book accurate and up-to-date, by the com- parison of all available authorities, including the cat- alogues of about one hundred German publishers. But the compiler does not pretend to be either omniscient or inerrant, and he will be grateful for the correction of the errors that must have crept into so long a list of names and dates and prices. He will receive thankfully any suggestions that may be made for the improvement of this little work, and he will be as much interested in the weeding out of worthless matter as in the adding of any important titles that may have been omitted. BIBLIOGKAPHY Cross-references to the consecutive numbers of the items in the Bibliography are given in heavy figures. The prices quoted refer generally to bound copies. It is the usual custom of publishers and dealers in Germany to deliver books unbound, unless bound copies are specifically ordered. A large part of the book trade in Germany is done by the second-hand book stores (Antiquariate), some of which have enormous stocks, and through which good books are often to be had at very low prices. Lists of the catalogues issued and sent on request by these "antiquaries" are published from time to time in Modern Language Notes, Baltimore (see below, No. 114a).
