STYLES «> CASH V V QlnttbtttnttB 0f lEligtbtltta of CSanbthatea "The Society of The Colonial Dames of America- shall be composed entirely of women who are legitimately descended in their own persons from some ancestor of worthy life zvho came to reside in an American colony prior to 1776, and who was efficient in the service of the country, either in the found- ing of a town or a commonwealth that has survived and de- veloped into importance; who held an important position in the Colonial Government ; or who, as statesman or officer, con- tributed to the achievement of American independence, through which was created a great and powerful nation." No service of an ancestor shall be deemed as qualifying service for admission where such ancestor adhered to the enemy during the War of the Revolution, or failed to maintain an honourable record. (See Preamble and Article III of the Constitution.) No person shall be admitted unless she shall be eligible by reason of lineal descent from an ancestor, nor unless she be judged worthy of becoming a member and be deemed ac- ceptable by the Board of Managers. (See Article IX of the Constitution.) NOTE: The Founders of a Colonial Town or Commonwealth are to be carefully distinguished from the ''early settlers," who were not actively instrumental in obtaining its charter or or- ganizing its government. "Commissioned Officers" includes only those whose com- missions proceeded from the Governor of a Colony or State, or from its legislature, however styled.
