The dark spots on Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, represent symptoms of various diseases. These symptoms are plainly noticeable at the various points shown by the dark spots, either by pains or aches, or by a sensitive- ness upon pressure. Some of these symp- toms or dark spots are immediately over the seat of the disease, while others are re- flex or transferred pains and appear on por- tions of the body quite distant from those affected by disease. The numbers at the end of each line run- ning out from the dark spots refer to cor- responding numbers at the top on left hand side of next page, where it tells what dis- eased member or organ is producing the symptom, and at the same time giving the number of the treatment or prescription to be used to remove or cure the trouble. The illustrations are pen drawings by the author taken from scientific medical works, and the treatments or prescriptions from medical works and papers read before medi- cal societies by such men as Wood, Pepper, DaCosta, Niemeyer, Dujordin, Beaumetz, Loomis, R. de Santos, Rousseau, Late J. Milner Fothergill, Sajous, Cohen, Kaposi, Sir Morrell Mackenzie, Rundscheau, Brauns, Holland, Huchard, Meredith, Climer, Dela- field, Hebbing, Hatfield, Blackwood, Chau- vins, Palmer, Fraentzel, Besnier, Pregadfco, Brinton, Cohen, Plumert, Arch Dixon, Comez de La Maca, Cueneau de Mussy, Tal. Donath, Monin, Verrier, Curryer, Par- vin, Thomas, Delapert and many others who are specialists and professors in medi- cal colleges in this and foreign countries. While most of the prescriptions and treat- ments are not credited to any one, they are fine and are used by such men as are above named, and when used as formulated and prescribed will not be found wanting. The symptoms as shown in illustrations are for diseases of both sexes, except those which pertain to diseases of the genital or- gans of women, and the treatments are ap- plicable to both with perhaps a slight varia- tion in size of dose to suit age, sex and con- stitution of the patient. No. 107 Diseased Ovaries and Tubes. Most cases of ovarian trouble are clue to displacements or falling of these organs. The most prominent symptom is pain upon the least jolt or upon walking. This con- dition is remedied by simply replacing and packing cotton under them around the womb, holding them in position until relieved of the congested state which they are in. This mode of treatment, when properly done, only requires from two to four weeks to cure the most stubborn cases. The cotton should be renewed once daily, and copious warm water injections into vagina should be made after each removal of the cotton. Ovary Ache does not necessarily mean ovarian disease any more than headache means brain disease, but symptoms 18 and 19 in Fig. 2, indicate disease or displace- ments of these organs. Gonorrhoea in the female is an intense in- flammation of the vagina. Rest and absolute cleanliness are two fac- tors essential to the proper treatment of Gonorrhoea. No collection of pus about the vulva should be allowed. The parts should be constantly washed with a mild solution of Carbolic Acid, twenty drops of the acid to eight ounces of water. Cleanliness within the vagina is as necessary as it is without. Vaginal injections of water, as hot as can be borne, should be made three or four times daily. The nozzle of the syringe should be carried well up into the vagina, and gently shifted from side to side while the injections are being made, to let the water come in contact with all parts of the vagina. A Remedy for either Sex : Dr. Hall, of New York, for the past few years, has been making a mint of money by imparting to individuals, at the rate of $4.00 per head, a secret method of curing disease, which he claims to have discovered. It is said that last year he did the largest money- order business at the New York Postoffice. Now all there is to the great secret is the simple flushing of the colon by rectal injec- tions with hot water. It affords immediate relief in all cases of stomach and bowel trouble, and by adding a little salt to the water, will, in most cases, effect a cure in Genuine Asiatic Cholera. Used before hand, in time of danger, it would be an absolute safeguard. It amounts to a sort of house- cleaning and renovating process for the physical system, and when followed up for a sufficient length of time, thoroughly purges, cleanses and rejuvenates the whole body. It is a specific for kidney, liver and lung trouble, relieving those organs of accumu- lated effete matter and congestion. It cleanses and beautifies the skin, and for this purpose is of great value to ladies who de- sire a clear complexion. It affords relief and cure to almost all female disorders. The water should be as hot as can be borne com- fortably, and should be used in abundance — all that can be taken, from a half gallon to a gallon, according to the size of the person. In cases of illness, it should be used at once, and the patient should then rest in bed for some hours. When used for precautionary purposes, or for the general health, it should be injected into the rectum every third or fourth night, just before retiring. A common rubber bulb syringe procured at any drug store for 75 cts. or $1.00 will answer the purpose. Salt, Capsicum, Slippery Elm, Lobelia and other things may be used with advantage in the water in cases where any such remedies are indicated by such conditions. A tea made of ground flax-seed and strained before using, would be good in all cases. The same treatment would be excellent for children, but amount of water should be in proportion to size and age of child. GENITAL ORGANS OF WOMEN. This engraving represents the genital organs of women as they appear when in their normal or proper positions. 58, Large intestine or colon ; 59, Bladder; 60, Pubic bone; 61 , Urethra or passage through which the urine is expelled ; 62, Vagina ; 63, Labi or lip, a part of the vulva, and when inflamed the disorder receives the name of vulvitis, and when affected by intense itching the disorder receives the name of pruritus vulva ; 64, Blood vessel; 65, Marrow of backbone; 66, Spinal column or backbone; 67, Body of womb; 68, Neck of womb ; 69, Rectum, at which place piles or hemorrhoids, anal fissures and contractions of sphincter ani muscles occur ; 70, Perineum or the parts between the rectum and vagina, which sometimes rupture during childbirth. Application of cloths wrung from hot water will prevent the accident. The line which is drawn across the womb, between lines 67 and 68, is the dividing line between the neck and body of the womb, which place receives the name of internal os. In displacements or falling of the womb, it may drop down and remain in a perpendicular position; but as a rule it does not; it either falls forward or backwards, and in some individuals it doubles up on itself. When the latter condition occurs, the bend is usually at the internal os, or where the dark line crosses the womb. This bend or curvature in some cases is so sharp or short that it closes the cavity of the womb at that point, and by this means creates an obstruction to the menstrual flow, which gives rise to the distressing symptom known as dysmenorrhea, or painful menstruation. A partial closure at the mouth of the womb also will produce the symptom. If there is any one diseased condition of the womb which needs quick attention more than others, it is that condition which produces painful menstruation. Its tendency always is to grow worse instead of better, and in such cases internal medication is worse than useless, as it will only ruin the stomach and be of no benefit in relieving pain at the menstrual periods. Morphine will ease the pain, but the effects are such that the patient is less able to bear the next one. There are other distressing symptoms produced by falling of the womb. If it tips forward and rests upon the bladder and urethra, it causes irritation in these organs. If it tips backward and rests upon the rectum, it affects that organ, causes constipation and sometimes piles, and at the same time bearing down, heavy, dragging pains will be present. DISEASES OF WOMB AND HOW TREATED. 27 Fig. 7. This engraving represents a woman in the act of being treated for diseases of the womb. 71 is the womb, and 72 is a uterine (womb) probe, or the instrument by which the medicine is applied to the diseased mucous membrane or lining membrane of the womb. The end of the probe which is passed into the womb, as shown in engraving, is first wrapped with absorbent cotton and soaked with the solution which is to be used. The medicine is applied to the inner surface or mucous membrane for the purpose of destroying the diseased tissue, which at first is in a raw state, and the slightest touch will produce hemorrhage. The leucorrheal discharge (whites), with which so many ladies are afflicted, is the con- tinually sloughing off of the diseased mucous membrane or inner coating of the womb. The applications to the mucous membrane should be made weekly, and in some cases two would be better, each alternate application being the nature of an antiseptic dressing. At the same time, copious warm water injections should be made once or twice daily by the patient herself. As to the time required to effect cures, this will vary considerably in the different indi- viduals ; some require much longer time than others. An ordinary case under treatment of a specialist of ability may be cured in from three to four months. While the same cases under treatment of general practitioners, never. This may seem like putting it pretty strong in regard to general practitioners, but nevertheless it will hold good in ninety-nine cases out of every hundred. There is no other class of sufferers in existence who are receiving such little benefit, and none who are so outrageously humbugged by general practitioners as are those who seek relief at their hands for this class of ailments. One might suppose from the above engraving that the person of the patient would be exposed while being treated ; such, however, is not the case, and is never necessary except in cases where certain external surgical operations are made necessary — such as the removal of external tumors, abscesses, repairing lacerations, etc., otherwise the least exposure would be uncalled for and ungentlemanly. 28 DISEASES OF CHILDREN. Chronic Constipation of Long Standing-. Habitual constipation is produced by va- rious causes. It may be brought about by the peculiar nature of the diet; a deficiency or faulty composition of intestinal secre- tions ; diseased intestinal glands ; impaired nervous influences, or exposure to certain poisons. It may occur from a negligence to attend to the calls of nature, or from sedentary habits ; or it may be joined to affections of the liver or stomach ; or it may be caused by diseases of the rectum, as that of hemorrhoids or piles, anal fissures, con- traction of the sphincter ani muscles ; or it may, in women, result from falling of the womb when it rests upon the rectum. The cases of constipation are numerous, but those which are apt to be overlooked by the patient and even the physicians, are the ones which are caused by diseases of the rectum, and, in women, a displaced womb resting upon that organ. The safest and best mode of treatment for constipation, when due to rectal trouble, is by gradual dilatation of the rectum. This is accomplished by means of a rectal dilator, which is placed in the rectum and opened as far as the patient can stand comfortably. These dilatations are kept up by dilating once each or alternate day for several week's or until cured. This method of treatment not only heals piles, anal fissures, but it re- moves the obstruction to a movement of the bowels. When the difficulty is that of a displaced womb resting upon the rectum, the womb must be replaced and kept off of the rec- tum. This may require several months' uterine treatment, and the services of a specialist in this class of ailment, while that produced by a diseased rectum may be accomplished by any general practitioner who has the proper instruments to do the dilating. Medication by stomach in these cases will never give more than temporary relief, and in some cases not even that. In most cases its tendency is to aggravate the trouble by further impairing the function of the digestive organs. The proper treatment of constipation, as is the case in all other ail- ments, is to treat the disease and not the symptoms. Remove the cause and nature will regulate the balance. In constipation, the moisture which should remain in the intestine to lubricate the walls and soften the contents, is reabsorbed by the system, and carried through the portal vein to the liver ; and notwithstanding this organ is a great purifier, the constant dump- ing of all this filth into the liver demands of it a greater work than it can do. Hence it becomes sluggish, which at once inter- feres with digestion, blood becomes impov- erished and loaded with bile, which is thrown to the surface and causes the com- plexion to become sallow, and in some cases spells of severe headache and in others what is known as sick headache. Persons may remain in this condition for years without knowing or even suspecting the cause. In women, displacements of the womb when resting upon the rectum will produce the same results.
