FORM OF ADMISSION. [The Pastor shall read the names of those who are to be received into the Church. As each name is called, the person shall arise and come before the altar. Then the Pastor shall address them as follows :] i. Address. Dearly Beloved: — Believing that you have been drawn by the Spirit of God, you have presented your- self to enter into one of the most solemn compacts possible, and to perform^one of the most important and joyful acts of your life. Should you cling affectionately to that Redeemer whom you are now about openly to avouch, you will never cease to feel the blessed effects of the dedication you are 49 about to make, aud you will ever rejoice that God brought you to this hour; but if your soul draw back, and you put your Saviour to an open shame, this deed and this hour shall he everlasting witness against you. Yet, beloved, we hope better things of you ; and, though we have thought it meet thus to admonish you, it is with the calm and cheerful hope that He who has called you in His love, chosen you in His merciful purposes, and adopted you into His family of grace, will never leave you nor forsake you. but will keep you by the power of His Spirit unto the end. You have been deeply convinced of your personal sinful- ness ; you have heartily repented ; you have believed in the forgiving love of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, without which, forgiveness is not possible; you have dedicated your heart and life to Him ; that dedication you are about to renew before the world, being duly mindful of Christ's injunction that all confess Him before men. Believing that if the Holy Spirit had not drawn you, you never would have come to this hour, you will now give your assent to the following statement of faith, and to a covenant between you and your God, and with this Church. 2. Statement of Doctrine. In the presence of Almighty God, the searcher of hearts, and before this assembly, you profess your unfeigned belief of the Holy Scriptures, as given by divine inspiration ; your acceptance of all the doctrines contained in them ; and your submission to the whole will of God revealed in His word. Particularly, you believe that the Lord Jehovah, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, is the one living and true God, that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God, equal with the Father, and the only Saviour of men ; that the Holy Ghost is also God, and that He is the only sanctifier of those who believe in Christ to the salvation of their souls. You also believe, that in consequence of the fall of man 5o from his primitive state of innocence, all the human race, while in a state of nature, are destitute of holiness ; and that a renovation of heart during the present life, through santifi- cation of the Spirit of God, is necessary to fit mankind for union and communion with the visible Church of Christ on earth, and for an entrance into the kingdom of Heaven. You furthermore believe, that all who are the subjects of the renewing and sanctifying influences of the Divine Spirit, exercise supreme love to God, benevolence towards men, re- pentance of sin, and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose righteousness forms the only ground of justification before God, and that the law of God still remains their rule of con- duct. DO YOU THUS BELIEVE? [At this point the Pastor shall say : do you who were offered to God in baptism by your parents in your infancy, now publicly assent to their faith and make it your own? Those who were baptized in infancy shall respond in an audible voice, we do. To such as were not baptised in infancy, the rite shall now be administered.] [The Pastor shall say : you will now give your assent to the following Covenant in recognition of the duties which you assume on entering the visible kingdom of God on earth.] 3. Covenant. Humbly hoping that you are a subject of the new birth, of that faith in Christ which works by love and purifies the heart, and of that repentance which is unto life, you avouch the Lord Jehovah to be your God, Jesus Christ the Son of God to be your Saviour, and the Holy Spirit to be your Sanctifier. Depending on divine grace for sanctifieation, consolation, and spiritual strength, and receiving the Word of God as the only rule of your faith and practice, you submit to the brotherly watch and discipline of this Church of Christ ; and engage on your part to comfort, assist, warn and reprove its members as becometh a faithful follower of Christ. You do now solemnly give up yourself and all that you have, unto God; promising that you will endeavor to walk as becometh the Gospel of Christ, that you maj r give no cause for others 5i to speak evil of it on your account, but that the name of God may be glorified in you. do you thus promise? [The Pastor will here call the names of those who are to unite by letter, who shall come forward and assent to the following Covenant.] Do you who come to us by letter from other churches, thereby renew your Covenant which you have already made ? In entering into the fellowship of this particular Church do you accept its statement of faith, engage to submit to its watch and discipline, to labor for the promotion of Christ's kingdom through it, and to be true to your duties and obli- gations as members of it ? do you thus promise ? [The Pastor will here ask the Church to arise.] On your thus professing and promising, we receive you into this Church, and admit you to the full enjoyment of all its privileges, — promising, through Divine Grace assisting us, to aid you in the duties of the Christian life by our prayers and fraternal watchfulness, expecting in return, the same offices from you, that the purposes of this holy Covenant may be answered. The Lord make us faithful to himself and to each other. [The Pastor shall give each the right hand of fellowship for the Church.] H 5 2 i u r * ^/iTt^'' o S^ ,* v % .0° o C\ *<» % V-0^ ct* **' *.<* ■A Lex ^ ■ \3
