1ST Regiment
Rhode Island Volunteers
w
ITS ORGANIZATION,
MARCHES, AND CAMPS
'HEX the I'jL-sident issued his first call for volunteers to serve
for two rears in the war with Spain which had been declared
on April 21, 189S, the patriotism and fervor of the people of
Rhode Island were aroused, ami innnediate steps were taken
toward forming a regiment to send to the " h'ont."
Kecriiitins offices were opened in the cities of I'rovitlence, Woon-
socket, Newport, and I'awtncket, ami as fast as men were enlisted they
were sent to Camp Elisha Dyer, which li.id been opened on May 2, at
Ouonset Point, North Kingstown, under connuand of Lieutenant-Colonel
Henry l). Rose, of the Rhode Island Militia. It took but a very short
lime to recruit the new regiment up to 12 companies of 77 men each,
and on the 26th of May a start was made lor Camp Alger, \'a.
The regiment, under conmiancl of Colonel Clias. \V. Abbot, paraded through
Providence on the afternoon of the 26th, and on every hand was met with the
greatest enthusiasm, the people vying with each other in their efifiirts to give a
fitting farewell to the noble sons of the state who had Ijeen so quick to respond
to their country's call. At 6.30 i\ M. of the same day, the regiment embarked on
the steamer J?/iijde Island, arriving in Jersey City, N. J., at 6.10 A. Ji. on the
following day. The transferring of the regiment from the boat to the cars took
but very little time, and at g.55 A. m. .mother start was made on the Baltimore
and Ohio railroad toward Washington. Philadelphia was passed at noon, P.alti-
more at 6 o'clock, and Washington was reached at .S o'clock I'. M. on the 27tli.
Here a delay of a short time occurred, and the train was side-tracked until
9.30, at which time it left tor 1 )inm Loring, \'a., arriving there at 10.30 on the
morning of the 2Sth. From that time on, progress to Camp Alger was very slow,
the balance of the day and half of the night being consumed in moving toward
camp, which was finally reached at halt an honr after midnight, the b.ilance of
the night being spent on the cars.
Before the regiment was able to pilch ils leiils in the morning, it was nece.s-
sary to clear the ground of trees and brush, which took consideralile time, but
eventually the place was ])Ut into good shape, tents were pitched, and the regi-
ment settled down to its first experience in camp-life. Mnstering lor lust pay
took place on May 31.
for the ne.\t two weeks the time was consmned in the ordinary routine of
camp— drills, parades, and guard-mounting being kept up with great regularity.
The first break in the routine was luade on June 17, when the regiment was
ordered to Difficult Run, Fairfa.K comUy, Va., for a practice march. This place
was reached at 1:30 p. m. of the same day, and tents were pitched and a regular
camp opened, which lasted until llu- morning of the 19th, when, at 7 a. m. the
line of march w.is taken up ag.iin for a return to Camp Alger. The march back
was a very hard one, taking all clay ,and evening, with no stops, and Camp .\lger
was reached at nndnight.
While the regiment was lying ,it Camp Alger, the second call for vohnUcrrs
was m.ade, and officers were sent back to Camp Klisha Dyer for llu- purpose .i|
recrniling the regimenl up to ils maxinuim slrenglh of 12 ompanies of lof, men
— 3 —
each. On June 24 the new recruits arrived, and cm June 27 another, march was
made to Difficult Run, returning on the 30tli.
Camp was broken on August 3 for the movement ot' the troops to Thor-
ou.^litare Gap. The weather was intensely hot, and the snftering among the men
very great. General Davis, commanding the Second Division of the Second Army
Corps, led the march, and of the 11,000 men that started, but 4,000 arrived at the
first stopping-place. Here a halt was made in order to allow the stragglers to
catch up with the main body, and early in the morning of August 5 the march
was resumed. Bull Run, V'a., was reached at about noon, and the regiment was
encamped in front of an old Confederate breastworks, a relic of the Civil War.
At 7 o'clock the ne.xt evening the line of inarch was taken up to Manassas,
where Companies G, I, E, B, K, and C, under command of I.t.-Col. Cook, arrived
at 9 i». M., pitching their tents in the court house yard of that town.
Companies C and K left Manassas under command of Major Phetteplace,
and marched to Bristow, arriving there the morning of August 7. On the same
day the six companies which had been left behind on the march to Manassas led
the division on its march through Bristow to Chapel Springs. At Bristow they
were joined by Companies C and K. Companies I and E marched from Manassas
on August 8, and joined the other companies at Chapel Springs. Company G
also started to join the regiment later, and in doing so met with difficulties which
will ever live in the memory of the members. In its march it was necessary
for the company to ford a creek, and in doing so, many of the members lost their
rifies and bl.inkrts in the swollen and turbulent stream. In order to get through,
the nun were compelled to link arms and wade in the water neck-deep.
