S OF ■ and ■ NEW YORK Price List — OF — Rogers & Brother, WATERBURY, CONN., ■ MANUFACTURERS OF THE CELEBRATED GENUINE ELECTRO SILVER-PLATED gP00Ng,vF0^Kg,vKNIYEg, stamped ''^^ ROGERS & BRO., A-IJ' 690 BROADWAY, NEAR FOURTH STREETrr-^^^. 'VJ«» WATERBURY, CONN. VV Ko4?.^-l^ -1882- 1.0^ American Bank Note Company, 142 Broadway, New Yort.. Engraving on Wood by N. Orr & Co., 52 John St., New York. TO THE TRADE: In presenting a New and Eevised Price List, the occasion is taken to state that the "GENUINE ROGERS GOODS" have, for a period of about thirty-live years maintained their supremacy over all competition; a fact well known to the trade, and also conceded by many competitors, who, finding that purchasers demand "ROGERS" Goods, have, in some way appropriated the name in various forms upon their own goods, or goods made for them. The merits claimed for these goods are as follows : QUALITY:— The metal is of the best Nickel Silver, and heavily plated with pure silver, by weight warranted to exceed the usual extra or standard plate twenty per cent. MANUFACTURE: —Skilled workmen, and valuable pat- ented machinery, together with long experience war- rants the statement that these goods are not excelled. Every piece is " set" or shaped by machinery, thereby insuring absolute uniformity. The weight of metal is distributed in the articles, placing the strength where required, and every improvement is adopted that is of value. STYLES: — The line of patterns is large, and embraces all the new and salable styles, and also the old standards. The dies are finely executed and frequently replaced, no old or worn out dies being ever used. For beauty and symmetry, the " Newport" has never been equal- led. Particular attention is called to our newest pat- tern, ''The Saratoga," of graceful outline and ex- quisite ornamentation ; we predict a large sale of this beautiful pattern, equalling, if not excelhng, its com- panion, "The Newport." For plain patterns, "The Tipped " and "Windsor," are still the favorites. FINISH: — All goods are burnished by patent machinery which imparts a harder and more even, consequently more durable, finish than is possible by the old hand process. As in the past, so in the future, shall the name of ROGERS & BROTHER be synonymous for "The Best." ^I^ nsroTiciB ALL Genuine Spoons, Forks, Knives, Ladles, &c., bear our name or trade-marks, "Rogers & Brother," "Rogers & Bro.," or " * Rogers & Bro., A-i," and are warranted made of the best quality of Nickel Silver Metal (Genuine Albata), and Plated Full Weight of Silver, according to the numbers on the labels, and are guaranteed to give perfect satisfaction, and dealers are authorized to make this guarantee good in all cases where they are satisfied that under fair usage the goods have failed to render proper service. "EXTRA OR STANDARD PLATE" Is plated 20 per cent, heavier than the ordinary market standard, and is labeled and stamped " A-i." "DOUBLE PLATE" Is so labeled, and is stamped as follows : Table Spoons, Table and Medium Forks, &c No. 8. Dessert Spoons and Forks, &c No. 6. Tea Spoons, &c. No. 4. "TRIPLE PLATE" Is so labeled, and is stamped as follows : Table Spoons, Table and Medium Forks, &c No. 12. Dessert Spoons and Forks, &c No. 9. Tea Spoons, &c No. 6. "QUADRUPLE PLATE" Is furnished to order only, and is stamped as follows : Table Spoons, Table and Medium Forks, &c No. 16. Dessert Spoons and Forks, &c No. 12. Tea Spoons, &c No. 8. "SECTIONAL PLATE" (Where the heel, breast and points of an article are plated extra heavy) is stamped and labeled XII. I^or description see page 7. In ordering Sectional Plate designate XII (not 12). Fancy Pieces, such as Ladles, Cake, Pie and Fish Knives, &fc., S^c, are carried in stock in A-1 or Extra Plate only. Heavier Plates fur- nished to order. XII or Patent Sectional Plate and Heavy, Spring Tempered Shank. Figures i and 2 show a Nickel Silver Fork and Spoon, with the XII plate on, as they appear before the final plating ; after the final plating the appearance is the same as regular plated goods, or solid silver. ^ c-, , Figure i also shows the Heavy, Spring Tempered Shank. KoGERS & Brother, Waterbury, Conn. OR PATENT SECTIONAL PLATE. -es^ Goods plated by this process are having a large and increasing sale, for the simple reason that they give more loear than other spoons of higher cost, the silver being triple plated on those parts that usually wear out first. they are the most serviceable, and dealers are largely ex- tending their sales by keeping them in stock arid explaining their merits to purchasers. Heavy, Spring Tempered Shank, (PATENTED.) By this important improvement, great strength is im- parted luhere it is required, without onaking the article clumsy and heavy in other parts. 8 KoGEES & Brother, Waterbury, Conn. PLAIN. TIPPED. EoGEEs & Brother, Waterbury, Conn. 51 -^ Photographs * On account of the continual rapid accessions of new patterns, and retirement of old styles, we do not publish an illustrated Catalogue of PIollow Ware, but to our customers we will send, on application by mail or telegraph, Photo- graphic Albums to order from, containing all the newest Designs uj) to the latest date (unattainable in a printed catalogue). The goods are jihotographed on a scale, and the list prices distinctly marked, so that any dealer may have the advantage of seeing and ordering the latest styles. The selections to be made on receipt of Albums, and the same to be returned to us without delay. Parties unknown to us may procure these Albums on the same terms, by application, enclosing their business card and references. This feature, first introduced by us, has met with marked favor by the trade, dealers thereby being able to order intel- ligently for stock, and also to make large and special sales^ to their customers. Orders left to our selection will be filled with the most desirable and salable styles — the dealer merely giving us as a guide the list prices of the goods desired. "We have never advertised it or made any special effort to extend its sale, and yet, on its merits alone, a de- mand has grown for it far beyond our expectations. We believe it to be the best article of the kind, and for the pur- pose known. Elegantly put up in packages of one dozen boxes ; with each dozen are sent 25 envelopes containing valuable hints to purchasers how to take care of their ware, and a sample of the Ceetan Polish for trial. KoGEES & Brother, Waterbury, Conn. 63 COHCEMINrT tie CLEANING of SILVER PLATE. It is a fact well known to manufacturers of Silver Plated Ware, that more articles are worn out by cleaning than by the actual wear they receive in using — in other words, ware that is used dally and properly treated in cleaning, Avill last longer and look better than the same articles if used on^y occasionally, and which, through ignorance or carelessness, are damaged by attempts to polish them. A few hints are given below, which, if followed, cannot fail to give satisfaction. Before detailing the directions, it may not be amiss to say that to the eye all qualities of Silver Plated Ware look alike — whether good or bad. The purchaser, it is true, may be able to detect good xoorkmansMp, attractive style, and delicacy of finish, but there are no visible guides or guages of thickness of plate; that can only be determined by analysis, or by the time articles will weai". The goods that bear the name of " Rogers & Bro." have successfully borne this test for many years, and to-day hold the highest rank in Plated Ware. All dealers are authorized to warrant these goods to give perfect satisfaction if fairly used, or refund the money. Remember, the best costs the most at first, but is the cheapest in the end. Directions: WHAT TO DO. Procure a fi^ie, soft chamois ; such generally come in small sizes, and are much more expensive than the larger and coarser ones, which are not cheap for this purpose at any price ; keep it in a box carefully away from dust, and never allow it to be used on anything but the silver. Spread half a teaspoonful of the powder on the softest side of the chamois, rub it in well and it is ready for use ; dip the article to be cleaned in hot water, then moisten a small piece of the chamois in alcohol, and apply a small por- tion of the powder, afterwai'ds polishing with the dry chamois. Any particles of the powder that adhere to the 64 EoGERs & Brother, Waterbury, Conn. chasing or ornaments may be removed with a soft brush. The silver in daily use should be polished once a week ; that which is only used occasionally should be kept in soft un- bleached Canton flannel or chamois bags in a dry place, as far as possible removed from gas or smoke, and should be cleaned at least once a month. WHAT NOT TO DO. Do not use " soaps," or " quick cleaning'''' compounds; all such generally contain strong chemicals, that eat the tar- nish off quickly, but eat the silver as well. Whiting contains grit, and will soon destroy polish and plating. For evidence of this, take a new piece of ware, rub it with whiting, and small, fine scratches will apj^ear, that, under a microscope, look like coarse file marks. Constant " filing" with whiting will soon show the metal under the plating. Do not use a silver-ware chamois on stair-rods, door-knobs, mirrors, and the like, for the small particles of dust that will get into it make it an excellent rasp to scrape off the silver. Do not use large quantities of the powder ; a pinch is sufficient to clean an ordinary cake basket. Do not rub the ware hard, bearing on with all the strength ; it is the quick, rapid stroke that removes the tar- nish and restores the polish. Do not use a brush to polish the ^^la in surfaces; a watch- maker's soft brush is desirable to remove powder from chasing and ornaments, but do not use it where the chamois can be made to do the work. The powder alluded to above is the " Cretan Polish," an article which has been used for the past twenty years. No better substitute for the purpose has yet been revealed by nature or science. A quick cleaning compound, similar to the various " lightning cleansing fluids" which flood the market, can be made at a small cost, by mixing the " Cretan Polish" with a weak solution of cyanide of potassium or ammonia; but all such are deleterious to the goods. 1 LIBRARY OF CONGRESS
