Military Academy in June, 1835, and entered the Artillery. Resigned in 1836 and was engaged in civilian engineering work until 1842, when he returned to the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant of Topographical Engineers. In 1861 he was made a Brigadier General of Volunteers and was in command at the battle of Gettysburg. At the time of his death, which occurred in Philadelphia in 1872, he was a Major General in the Regular Army. The first suggestion for the Memorial came from the Grand Army of the Republic, and the survivors of the Philadelphia Brigade of the Army of the Potomac carried it forward to its culmination in an appropriation of $200,000 by the State of Pennsylvania for its erection. The sculptor of the Memorial is Charles Grafly and the architects, Simon and Simon, all of Philadelphia. The work of erection will be supervised on behalf of the Meade Memorial National Commission by Lieut. Col. C. O. Sherrill, Corps of Engineers, the Officer in Charge of Public Buildings and Grounds. ®vhtv of (Exercises Exercises called to Order Invocation Presentation of the colors and salute to the flag Remarks Music Address Music The Breaking of Ground with Historic Spade Music Hon.
