BY AXKIv SILVKRSPARRE, C. E. WASHINGTON, D. C. 18S7. Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1 887, D3 AXEL SILVERSPARRE, In the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, Tl % Xiajaaifti INTRODUCTION. This little book, with its accompanying map, constructed in a novel manner, is absolutely essential to ever}'^ visitor to the city of Washington, and of k^reat interest and value to every resident. By its aid a vast amount of useful information can be obtained in the simplest and readiest manner. With ordinary guide books and maps it is more trouble to find a given place on the map than it is on t]\e ground. But with the graduated tape attached to the map, and the corresponding numbers to be found in the body of the book, all sorts of places can be instantly located by a total stranger to the city of Washington. For example: It is desired to find ^SlcPherson iSquare. Finding the name in the alphabetically arranged guide, you will also see two columns of numbers, marked respectively M. and T. The first refers to the number on the margin of the map, the other to the number on the tape. In case of ^IcPherson Square, the numbers are M 105, T 13. To find the square desired, place the tape on No. 105 in margin, and under No. 13 on the tape, and you will find McPherson Square. In this same way you can locate instantly all points of interest in and about Washington, leading business houses, car routes, hotels, theatres, prominent public buildings, &c., and the direction from the Capitol of places within a radius of twenty miles. The tape reaches only ten miles. For instance, Alexandria, M 55, T 48. It locates Alexandria outside the map, and the tape indicates six miles. Bull Run, M 74, indicates the direction, twenty-six miles the distance. Several roads leading in that direction is also found on the list. b INTRODUCTION. The tape is divided into numbered sections, each of whic represents 6G0 feet, one-eighlh of a mile, and it is also divided int miles and parts thereof. To find the distance between two point lay the tape along the route desired to be measured, and read th result, as you would in measuring anything with an ordinary tap< line or rule. When the street system is once understood, Washington is th easiest city in the country for a stranger to find his way abou Tbe coloring of the map shows the four quarters. *' Nortl east," "Northwest," "Southeast" and "Southwest." These tern: are appended to the names of all the streets, so that the quarter at once indicated; for example, 14th street N. E., 14th street N.W etc. (These subdivisions are formed north and south, east or we^ by the Capitol streets extended.) Streets running nortii an' south are numbered in two series east and west from North an South Capitol streets. Those running east and west are indicate by two series of the letters of the alphabet, beginning from the lir of East Capitol street extended. These strtets are generally right angles. The avenues, named after the States, radiate in var ous directions, generally from the Executive Mansion or tL Capitol. The houses are numbered decimally, one hundred to each square for example 600 9th street N. W. must be at the corner of " street N. W.," F being letter No. 6 ot the alphabet, and 1100 Ma sachusetts avenue N. W., N. E or S. E. must also nccersaril}^ be 5 the corner of 11th street N.W.,N. E. or S. E., as the case may be. • By means of the street railways and the numerous herdics ac cabs transportation is rendered cheap and rapid. The lines of tl street railroads are laid down on the map.
