Francis, Chairman of Committee on Claims and Pensions, Senate of New Jersey ; Sir : — By direction of the Senate, Senate Bills Nos. 57 and 59, and Assembly Bills Nos. 71 and 84 have been referred to you for a statement as to the number of men, who were citizens of New Jer- sey, who performed military service in the regiments of other States during the civil war, 1861-65, were not credited upon the quota of our State, and hence did not become entitled to or receive State pay. At your request, I reply that the records of this office show that the following organizations of other States were recruited in this State : Company I, 11th Reg. Penn. Cavalry, Company H, 2d Reg. Penn. Heavy Artillery, Company H, 47th Reg. New York Infantry, Companies D and H, 48th Reg. New York Infantry, Companies E and H, 1st Reg. New York Engineers, Bramhall's New York Battery, Company A, 20th Reg. New York Infantry, Companies A and B, 2d Reg. New York Cavalry, Companies A, F, I and K, and one-half each of Companies B, G and D, 70th Reg. New York Infantry — Excelsior Brigade, Companies D, E and F, 71st Reg. New York Infantry — Excelsior Brigade, Company I, 72d Reg. New York Infantry — Excelsior Brigade, Several small detachments for the Veteran Reserve Corps. The three regiments of the Excelsior Brigade had 1,200 men of this State in their ranks ; the Veteran Reserve Corps Detachment about 100 men, and the eleven other companies mentioned, at least 800 men— in all, 2,100 soldiers.
