HOWARD, OF THE DETROIT BAR. fc*<*^ DETROIT. PREFACE. Within the past four years, Mr. Henry Clay Hodges, of Detroit, Michigan, has received through psychic force, a series of remarkable communica- tions under the following circumstances : Early in 1897, in said city, in company with six others, four gentlemen and two ladies, he commenced an inquiry with the view of investigating truth in connection with psychic phenomena. The meetings of the seven, one of whom possessed marked psychic pow- ers, were continued weekly, with little interruption from that time to this. They have been held with closed doors, no other persons having been admitted, and the results attained have been extraordinary. Of this society Mr. Hodges is the leading member, and Mr. W. E. Cole, the psychic; a quiet, unassuming, married gentleman of 30 years of age, of limited common-school education, of the highest character, residing at 221 Park street, of which premises he and his wife are joint owners. Shortly after these first meetings, Mr. Hodges commenced individual sittings with the psychic, and iii IV PREFACE. the messages contained in this volume, together with a large number of others reserved for publication in other works, entitled "Science and Key of Life: Manifestations of Divine Law," to follow this book, were the result, being psychic communications from Alvidas and Clytina and others, former inhabitants of ancient classic Greece. These extraordinary messages were transmitted by unseen intelligences, and were clicked out through a telegraph instrument of common use, arranged as follows : Upon a table was placed a small box, the upper and lower lids of slate, joined together by hinges on the wooden frames, within which was the transmitting key, and into which were put the occa- sional interrogatories written by Mr. Hodges, not seen by the psychic, and the lids then closed. From the lower part of the box two wires about two feet long extended to a small battery, shown in picture, from the cylinder of which wires extended to the re- ceiving instrument, or ticker, which was placed on the table, some little distance from the box, directly in front of the sitters, the whole apparatus being in plain view. The psychic laid one hand on top of the closed box, but did not touch the instrument. He wrote down the messages with great rapidity, as PREFACE. V clicked off in an abbreviated telegraphic code, and they were immediately taken to Mr. Hodges' office, where they were typewritten by Mr. John Coyne, a stenographer in Mr. Hodges' employ, and the orig- inals preserved, and filed away in a fire-proof vault for future examination and verification. For nearly four years the two held their sittings semi- and tri-weekly, in the same manner, closing the doors, giving the light full entrance, keeping out all intruders and taking seats near, but opposite each other, at the table, at about 9 o'clock a. m., each sit- ting, the messages occupying from one-half to three- quarters of an hour in each delivery. The series of messages in this book, which it is believed will be read with interest, came weekly and bi-weekly from June 5th, 1897, to November 30th, 1897, and are printed in their chronological order. The other series, "Science and Key of Life : Mani- festations of Divine Law," mentioned above, com- mencing December 4th, 1897, have been received semi and tri-weekly, through the same instrumen- tality, up to the present time, April, 1901, and are expected to continue. VI PREFACE. Mr. H. C. Hodges has been a resident of Detroit between thirty and forty years; is of the highest character and success in business life, and respected by the entire community. While he is a gentleman of great innate modesty, his sense of duty to him- self as well as to humanity, impels him to publish and present these writings to the public in the inter- est solely of truth. He believes this book and its successors speak for themselves, requiring no other or further endorsement. — The Editor. SELECTIONS. Dear Spirit in the Mortal : It is with pleasure that I come to you this day, in accordance with my promise, to manifest and give to you some knowledge of myself that may be interest- ing to you, from the fact that I have been attracted to you by the laws of infinite attraction and repulsion, and it only follows in order that we may proceed in a way to gain benefit from our coming together, that we first become familiar with the object to be brought out through our work. It is in order for me to give you a brief outline of my life and experience, so that we may become more in harmony with each other, and work to better advantage. My father was a Carthagenian, came to Athens in 152 B. C, was a student under Carneades,* who was chief representative of the new Academy. My father adopted his views, many of them originating from Socrates and Plato, who were confident in their knowledge of the immortality of the soul, though Note — Carneades was founder of the new Academy at Athens, Plato having founded the first. 2 TWO THOUSAND YEARS they had a hard task to bring the masses to under- stand it. It was easy to show that the spirit existed before the physical body, but it was more difficult to demonstrate to the masses that the spirit existed after so-called death. In 149 B. C. my father married Te- lesda, the daughter of Censorinus, who was Consul at that time, still continuing his studies and teaching in classes of his own. In 147 B. C. I was born at Athens, and was as a child quite sensitive, or as you would term it, a good medium, being controlled to write at the age of five, so that Plato and Socrates would both control my hand to write their views on subjects unknown to me. This to my father, mother, grandparents, Carneades and Lucilius, a Latin poet — all sitting together, was very interesting. This continued until I was nine years of age. Then my mediumship disappeared as my studies advanced. Either fortunately or unfortunately I passed to spirit life at the age of sixteen, and my teachings of the Spiritual philosophy were of great benefit to me, as they assisted me to manifest to my dear ones. As time passed on, my father, mother and near relatives came to spirit life, and you well know the conditions which have existed in connection with this philosophy as priestcraft came into existence. IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 3 The classes in Philosophy and kindred subjects were abolished, followed by the dark ages of priestcraft, ignorance and superstition, forming a barrier be- tween the spirit world and the material, and it is only of recent years that this has been overcome. Now we have great hopes for the future, though you must understand what a vast amount of ignorance and bigotry we have to contend against, in the fact that millions have been sent to our side of life in such undeveloped conditions that we must teach them against their early teachings and prejudices. So, you see, we have something to do in spirit world. I trust I have used this trial and force in a man- ner interesting to you, and shall endeavor to assist your own dear friends to come still better to you. My mission now is directed here in unison with you, and I feel we shall be able to do our part in bringing the two worlds nearer to each other. Each of your dear friends joins in this message. I shall be com- pelled to close for this time. Ever in truth and progress. Yours faithfully, ClvYTlNA. 4 TWO THOUSAND YEARS No. 2. June 12, 1897. To Mr. H. C. Hodges : My Dear Friend and Co- Worker in the Cause of Spiritual Advancement : I come to you this day, as I am very near to you, and as we are banded together for the one purpose of uplifting humanity to a higher plane of unfoldment. It is not strange that I take great pleasure in coming to you at this most oppor- tune moment, and it is my desire to form conditions with yourself and spirit friends that" will enable us all to come in such a way that you will not only be cognizant of my presence, but a host of other dear friends in spirit. It is our intention to form, as it were, a chain connecting the conditions existing over 2,000 years ago with those up to the present time. As far as I have been able to learn, these conditions have existed since time immemorial, and the earth has been plunged from light into darkness, first one, then the other. However, I am thankful to say that the dark periods are becoming shorter, and the light is continuing in length. This shows development. It is possible that you on the earth will be able to ad- vance to that condition where you will not again be compelled to experience such conditions as those IN CELESTIAL UFE. 5 you have before this witnessed: for the seed that was sown by Plato, Confucius, Socrates and hosts of others, is now bearing fruit, and we have taken advantage of the first opportunity to come in touch with the advanced spirits now in the body. We are advancing rapidly. Bigotry, prejudice and super- stition are being swept away by the overwhelming demonstrations that are taking place in nearly every household in the land ; and it all points to a condition where humanity will be spiritually advanced, as a whole, to such a degree that the method of madness now pursued by so many, will be entirely revolution- ized, and it will be more a heaven on earth. We do not predict this in your existence in the body, but we do know that you will be able, as a spirit, to come to earth and witness the happy change that will be universal, and it is true that all you may do while here, in that direction, will be credited to- you in the spiritual life's experience, and even here you will benefit from it in happiness, and by the knowledge that you have done your duty. You can accomplish this in many ways, by standing by your convictions, and at other times by showing some dear brother or sister that you are sincere and honest in your knowledge. We all gather about you as metal substance about a magnet, for it is the TWO THOUSAND YEARS natural law of attraction and repulsion. This term expresses it to you. Were I speaking to another spirit farther advanced in spiritual unfoldment, I would be compelled to use a different expression, showing you that the terms used here with you do not express the higher and finer forces existing on, into the more perfected state of existence. As a flower of earth might be placed in these finer conditions (if it were possible), and the effect would be disin- tegration, so with our spiritual bodies, we are con- stantly changing as we enter the higher conditions beyond. There are a host of angel friends gathered here to-day, who join in love and thoughts that are noble, good and pure. Let us all go on, hand in hand, and strive to reach the highest conditions of spiritual truth, and bring the millions of humanity along with us. We cannot reach all, but we can reach some who can reach others. I thank you for this privilege, and remain, as ever, your affectionate guide in spirit, ClyTina. My father is known to modern history as Has- drubal. IN CELESTIAI, LIFE. 7 No. 3. June 19, 1897. To My Dear Friend and Co- Worker in the Cause of Progress : I assure you it is extremely gratifying to me, as a spirit intelligence, to come and communicate with you to-day with the sincere purpose of giving out some thoughts that will be beneficial in bringing more spiritual conditions to earth. The spirit world in its relation to the earth condition is comparatively the same as the rounds of a ladder; is, in fact, steps of knowledge ; and as we progress, we step up higher to a condition in perfect harmony with ourselves. Just as air of the same temperature rises to its own den- sity, and as water flows to its level, so does mortal spirit rise to its exact condition of unfoldment. Even as we keep throwing off the old body and change in different periods of our earthly existence, likewise does the spiritual body become finer and more ethereal, and all these conditions are governed, to a large extent, by natural law, each one being as it were a law unto himself and responsible for his or her actions. But with knowledge comes the power and force to govern the good deeds made manifest in mankind, and the same feelings of love are prevalent, TWO THOUSAND YEARS and even intensified in the spiritual existence, so that we all eventually rise above the lower elements of life, and overcome the crude and undeveloped con- dition that has existed so long in connection with the material world ; so long, in fact, that all humanity- have become thoroughly imbued with its influence, so contaminating and injurious to the peace and hap- piness of mankind. Our purpose in coming to you here on earth is to elevate, to give you the benefit of our experience that you may profit by it, as the child profits by the good life led by the parent, and the same teachings, to uplift and lead a perfect life, are only the guide to what will prove to be the most perfect results on our side of life. My earth's experience was quite limited, as I only passed 16 years in the mortal, passing out 131 B. C. My father, whom I know as Clithoneachus, but who is known to modern history as Hasdrubal, is at the present time very much interested in my communi- cation to you, also my dear mother, known as Telesda, and there are many of my dear and near friends who are interested in your little circle which meets here, in this room, for the very purpose that our little circle met in Athens nearly 2000 years ago. It is certainly a pleasure to come to you in this way, and I feel certain that the time is rapidly drawing IN CELESTIAL UFE. 9 near when the world at large will be overwhelmed with the fact of life immortal, and communication of spirits disembodied. Most glorious day when this shall come to all mankind ! Then shall capital pun- ishment and many other inhuman laws be abolished, and we shall have spirituality on earth. Crime will be eradicated and the desire will be only to do good to all. You may not be in the body to see all this, but together we can combine to plant the seed that will germinate and produce the good results. I thank you most cordially for this privilege, and wish to be remembered kindly to each member of your little circle. I shall remain true to our work. Ever in love and truth, yours faithfully, ClvYTlNA. IO TWO THOUSAND YEARS No. 4. June 26, 1897. To H. C. Hodges, Esteemed Friend and Co-Worker : Once again I am accorded the privilege to come to you. Although I would most gladly retire in favor of those who are bound more closely to you by the ties of relationship, still, as it is their wish and yours, I take pleasure in coming. In the beginning I wish to thank you for your interest displayed in the work we have laid out t© do, for you will not know for some time just what conditions have been established in our coming as we have. It means so much to all mankind, and it seems a pity that these very conditions could not have been established centuries ago. If this had been the case, you would now be living in a far different world. As it comes to my mind, I wish to speak of the beauty and grandeur of spirit life, and correct in a measure, the erroneous ideas of the people who think of spirit as a heaven. The fact of it all is this, that it is exag- gerated, for as the spirit is unfolded, life becomes more beautiful, and what would be darkness to one on a low plane, to another would be heaven. There- fore life, with its surroundings, is what we make it for ourselves, so that when one speaks of the beautiful realms of spirit, it is the spirits themselves who are IN CELESTIAL UEE. II beautiful, and naturally their surroundings are in harmony with themselves. Our existence is just as real to us as your life upon earth, and we find work to do, aye, more than we can do. "The harvest is ripe, but the laborers are few," is well spoken. I am sure you will agree with me that we are rap- idly increasing the number of workers. The work is growing, and its development is really wonderful. It is not confined to the circle of dear friends with whom you have communication, but includes millions of others, who are in the same sphere of intelligence. This will create a force that will eventually over- whelm the universe. Truth will reign supreme. This is when our hopes will be realized, and the work we have been doing will bear fruit, for just as soon as we have the number of workers, equal in comparison with the harvest, the majority will be in power, and good will prevail instead of evil. You were speaking of trying for another likeness of myself, or rather your brother Homer spoke to me about it. I shall be pleased to try again, and trust that it will be successful, as I realize all these demon- strations are interesting, and not only this, but I can see that in the future the experiments we are making now will be improved upon, and others will receive 12 TWO THOUSAND YEARS the benefit of them. Thus far, we are all more than satisfied with the results on both sides. I long to be able, as soon as possible, to give you some of my spiritual experience. It may prove inter- esting to you, and will leave no doubt, in your mind, of the fact that there is always something to look up to, for even now, as you are seeking to learn more of our condition, we are striving to gain more knowl- edge beyond us. It is all most interesting and in- volves everything in life. I know that I have con- tinued to exist thus far, and from all I am able to learn of life, I firmly believe I shall always retain my individuality throughout eternity. I can find no reason in the past two thousand years to change my views on the subject ; in fact, I become more firm each day in my conviction. I only speak of this to show you where we stand upon this most important ques- tion. Each one of your dear friends wishes to be kindly remembered, and there are hosts of them here to-day. Let us keep on the work, ready and willing to do anything and everything that will strengthen our cause. I am sure you are willing. Remember me kindly to the little circle of seven, for it is a power of itself. I will close now and remain, yours most faithful to the cause, Clytina. IN CEI,ESTIAI, UFE. 1 3 Dear Friend : It is impossible for me at this time to express to you my profound thanks for your several communi- cations which have been received from time to time. You must see how difficult it has been for me, a per- sonality so unworthy, to believe that a spirit so ex- alted and of so many centuries' experience, should be attracted into my environments. Since the re- ceipt of your first communication, it has seemed as though a new life had been opened up to me — a life full of hope and renewed courage to go on and fulfill my mission during the few years which remain mine in the material. I have read your communications in their order, and applied my reasoning powers with a view, if possible, of detecting an abnormal thought, and must say that every line is replete with beauty of ex- pression, and full of that which seems to me to be Truth, and worthy of the source from which they purport to come. I will be most happy to receive, when the time comes, a history of your experience since entering higher life; and in connection with this biography, would be most happy to learn what your estimate is of Jesus Christ. Was he in his 14 TWO THOUSAND YEARS day and generation above, in spirituality, those other teachers in philosophy, to wit, Plato, Socrates, Con- fucius and hosts of others who have shed light upon humanity? I am Sincerely yours, H. C. Hodges. (The above note was dropped into the box and called forth the following message, No. 5, July 3, 1897, the writer having in view also several other communications besides the foregoing from the same individual. ) IN CELESTIAL UFE. 15 No. 5. July 3, 1897. Dear Friend and Co- Worker : It is highly gratifying to me to read your expres- sions of satisfaction and interest in the messages I have been accorded the privilege of giving to you through this wonderfully sensitive instrument. It is only natural that I should come to you, with the advancement you have made, and I am confident that had you the same advantages of experience as myself, you would be fully as highly developed in spiritual things ; therefore, according to talents given you, and the time to unfold them, you are as highly exalted as I, and when we stop to think of the eternity of time beyond, of which we can form but little con- ception, we all feel very unworthy, though I am not loth to think more of the present time and what good I may be able to do now, as this is the object in the main. I wish to express my pleasure now at the success of the portrait given in our sitting on last Friday even- ing, as it was most interesting to me, and I am sure that your brother's gift of art will place him in a posi- tion to do a great amount of good in his advance- ment, and he wishes me to say to you that as soon as l6 TWO THOUSAND YEARS possible he will give you other portraits that will be interesting to you.* I wish to say just a few words in connection with our ideas of Christ and His teachings. We consider him a highly developed psychic, and his religious faculties were far greater than any other personality known to myself. Plato possessed the faculty of oratory, Socrates of philosophy, Beethoven of music, etc., and it is these self-same gifts that are imbued within us, that we are expected to cultivate and use in a way that mankind will receive a benefit. Each faculty is necessary to do its particular part, and, combined as a whole, they form the basis for per- fection in all things. We can each one gather what we can to his own good, and it is these highly ad- vanced intelligences who send out their thoughts into the universe that permeate everything. It is more natural to be good than evil ; therefore when we, of one mind, either incarnate or disembodied, meet to- gether and direct our minds to good thoughts, and pure and noble deeds, evil must flee in the face of this most overwhelming force; knowledge and wisdom (♦Note. — Clytina here refers to a profile view of herself sketched upon a pad on Mr. Hodges' lap. The brother Homer referred to was an artist who passed out in 1862.) IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 1 7 take the place of ignorance and bigotry, and when this is accomplished, we have undone the work which Constantine began in establishing the power of church and priestcraft. Classes of science will again be formed, as in the ages of the past, and once again we shall reach an equalization of power and wisdom. I shall take great pleasure in giving you an out- line of myself and of conditions existing in my life's experience, as soon as I can do so. We have classes formed now where we all meet together and discuss the higher subjects of life. I would be pleased to have you present, as a guest, if it were possible, but you will have this privilege later, when your work is finished here on earth, as we know that through you a power of good can be made manifest. There are a host of friends here who wish to be kindly remembered to you, and let us continue on in the paths of wisdom, learning from each other the truth and beauty of the most grand philosophy which ever came to earth. Again I thank you, and a word of loving remembrance to our circle. Ever your earnest and faithful friend, Clytina. 1 8 TWO THOUSAND YEARS No. 6. July 6, 1897. Dear Friend in the Mortal : Once again I have been afforded the privilege to come here and give you a message, and it is a great pleasure to me to know that our efforts to keep up the line of communication are appreciated by you, as it will be necessary to do this in order to perform our mission in our life's experience, in direct contact with the inhabitants of this small planet. I wish to direct your attention to the thousands of other planets which are inhabited by human beings of in- telligence, and some are far in advance of the con- dition existing here on earth. I can give you some of the conditions later, but I only speak of this that you may realize how many different conditions of life are formed in the whole, and how many there must be who are laboring in the cause of truth in order to bring about a universal heaven, as per- fection in mankind. We are now entering upon a period of advance- ment never attained before here on earth by mortal man. Different minds are now working upon instru- ments of such a fine sensitiveness that those in the spirit world can use them to communicate to their friends in a very simple and easy method. I realize IN CELESTIAL UFE. 19 that I am going somewhat ahead of the present, and still I wish you to know that we are cognizant of these conditions existing here on earth, and of the constant efforts of the many intelligences in spirit to form conditions that will mean so much to all humanity, and in our little circle we are attracting the different ones who can do good, and in many ways and forms establish a condition that will be the means of laying the foundation for the light of truth to shed its rays upon the minds of so many who are capable of reception. In going back to my childhood days and earth's experience nothing of great importance transpired, with the exception of my mediumistic gifts, which were brought out as a child, and which I have spoken of in a previous communication. However, I always derive great pleasure in referring to those days of my childhood, and it is indeed a source of gratifica- tion to feel that we, as inhabitants of the mortal, did our part in assisting to form the conditions which are intended to be universal by the great infinite deity. My education covered a period of about seven years, between the ages of 9 and 16. Fortunately, my father, understanding these higher forces, was able to educate me in a natural way, that is to bring out the spiritual lesson in connection with the material, 20 TWO THOUSAND YEARS and in this way, he always brought before me the grand and noble purpose in life eternal. I was also taught the importance of realizing that I must not think of life as a matter of three score and ten, or thereabouts, but of life everlasting. I only speak of this in order that you can understand in what con- dition I entered spirit life, realizing in a way the true conditions of it, and also with a comprehen- sion of the vast eternity which lies beyond all mankind. You will be able to understand me bet- ter, when I give you my experience during these 2,000 years, and I feel now that I shall be ready to enter upon a brief outline of the most important events. I will take pleasure in giving this as there is a purpose, else I should never have been accorded the privilege. I find I must close for the present, and wish to be kindly remembered to our faithful band of seven. Each one is necessary for the particular work. I will continue this at the first opportunity given, or at least when it is best to do so. With many thanks to you for your faithfulness to your promise, I re- main, very truly your friend in the spirit, Clytina. IN CEXESTIAI, UFE. 21 No. 7. July 10, 1897. My Dear Friend in the Mortal : Once again we have gathered here to learn how we can best advance the cause we have most at heart, and in coming to you and giving my life's experience, I feel that there is a purpose in it, far greater than the pleasure it will give to you or me. I have given you an outline of my earthly experi- ence that will enable you to realize my condition as I passed out of the body. I will begin with a description of my passing out, as it was not of the ordinary, though before going into this, it will be well to speak of an adopted sister named Althus, to whom we had been directed in our sittings. She was an orphan and lived with an aged grandparent who was a direct descendant from Plato. It was he who first called our attention to her, and for a grand purpose. We took a great interest in the child and grandmother, and found that the little girl was a wonderful medium, and shortly after her grandparent passed to spirit life, we took her to reside with us. This was about the time when my medium- ship left me, in my ninth year. My parents were directed to adopt her, as they were only too happy 22 TWO THOUSAND YEARS to do, and through her mediumship we continued our circle, although I was only permitted to join occasionally. However, it seems that in one of these circles they were informed of the liability of my transition. This was about 131 B. C. in my six- teenth year. At the stated time I became very ill, and it seems that arrangements had been made for my passing out. I was carried into the private seance room, and while I was unconscious they sang, and my mother played upon the harp, low and sweet music, that produced such grand harmony, and sud- denly the room was lit up and we seemed to be in the spirit world (as we were), and my dear grand- parents, Plato, Socrates and other dear friends stood in our midst. Nearly all present in the mortal could see them with the exception of my father and grand- father (my mother's parent). Then followed a wonderful demonstration. Different ones of the dear spirit friends approached my bedside, and stood two on either side, and bade me say good night to my dear father, mother and others gathered there. Then different waves of force were brought into action by those who stood near, and gradually I rose out of my body and seemed to be so free, and took hold of my own hand and bade farewell to the mortal form which had served as an abiding place for me during IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 23 my earthly experience. Then, turning away, I followed the dear friends who stood by me, and we emerged into such grand and beautiful conditions that I can- not describe the beauties of them, but know now that I was taken into the sixth sphere of spirit life. Here I met other friends who had known of me, though I was not familiar with them. There were many gath- ered there, and I learned it was a meeting of the advanced spirit intelligences, for the purpose of form- ing conditions that would add others to our cause, both in the mortal and in the spirit. I had heard much of spirit life, and found that while a great many conditions, existing spiritually, had been ex- plained to me, yet I could not realize them, as I did when I found myself an inhabitant of the spirit world. Lectures were delivered upon subjects in connection with the best method to pursue in bringing the spirit- ual conditions to earth, so that all might enjoy its blessings. Then we changed the trend of our thoughts to other subjects, as we were becoming- weary in the one thought. I found everything as real as when I inhabited the mortal form, and I would love to give you a description of the condi- tions. I may in the future. The next evening we had an engagement to meet our dear friends in the dear old room, where we 24 TWO THOUSAND YEARS might communicate with our loved ones. But pre- vious to our going there we received word that there was much ill-feeling aroused in Athens, for the rea- son that music and singing were heard by those out- side, who were antagonistic to our philosophy, and this was used as an excuse to persecute the faithful ones. However, we went to the home of my parents and found them sitting, but we were unable to demonstrate very clearly, on account of the imperfect conditions existing there. We did succeed in inform- ing them of our presence, through different signals or rappings that they understood, and encouraged them to continue on in their sittings. I find I will have to close for the present, but will continue this letter. I remain as ever, Faithfully your friend in spirit, Clytina. IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 25 No. 8. July 13, 1897. My Dear Spirit Friend in the Mortal : I come to you this day, arid I assure you it is very gratifying to me to realize that you have taken such an active interest in my coming, for it is in fact the first time I have been able to demonstrate to those outside of my immediate friends, and that was long ago. I wish before going farther to say a few words in explanation of my coming to you as I do, for I have been with you at different times, and often when you were sitting alone in your room and reading the communications that I have given to you. I see that the composition has been criticised. That is perfectly natural. As this is the first time I have manifested in this way, and using a language that is entirely foreign to me, I expect to make some mis- takes, at least. But we will let this pass, and cling more closely to the thought which I intend to bring out in this sitting. We returned to the home of my friends in spirit, which to me was quite real as it was in the form of some of the residences peculiar to my native country, only this was so grand and the gardens of flowers and plants were so large and 26 TWO THOUSAND YEARS beautiful. I had not realized as yet any great change from my material conditions, only a sense of a finer spirit. Conditions of freedom seemed to per- vade all the air, and I was indeed happy. I spoke of this to my friends, how beautiful it was and how grand it was, and there seemed to be good conditions everywhere. So my dear friend and guide, Plato, wished to know if I would care to see the conditions which existed in the lower spheres. I was indeed very anxious to do so, and we arranged a visit to the spheres below us on the following day. Plato then asked me if we should not all retire to the dining room. This was not the word used, but it will answer the purpose here. We all consented, and I then began to realize that I was somewhat ex- hausted for the first time since leaving my home, a period of three days. I followed the others through the house, from the reception room where we were seated, on through the halls and soon emerged into the garden. We walked on and finally came to a small opening, where we found seats or couches, and I was led to one of these, and bade to be seated, which I did, and was told to lie passively and breathe in as regular and natural a manner as possible. IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 27 Then I beheld others, whom I had not seen, come into our midst, and carry vessels in which seemed to be something in a liquid form. These persons then advanced to the centre of the opening, and not far distant low sweet music came to my ears, very faintly at first, but gradually growing in volume. During this time, those carrying the vessels seemed to spray the liquid all around and about the opening, and we arranged in a circle about them. This was all very strange to me, and I suddenly remembered to be passive, which I did and closed my eyes, in order not to disturb my thought by what was going on about me. Soon I sensed a very pleasant con- dition which seemed to enter my body, and as I discovered, this was the manner in which our food was taken. You would term it absorption, I be- lieve, though I soon learned there were some con- ditions of spirit existence that were much different from this, and I will endeavor to bring this out as I continue. In a short time I lost all consciousness and awoke very much refreshed, and found my other dear friends sitting near and talking earnestly, when we all adjourned to the house once more, where I learned we were to meet several distinguishd guests, prominent among them being a learned man and 28 TWO THOUSAND YEARS great philosopher of Jewish descent. I will tell you of this, and also of my visit to other spheres of life in our next sitting. I do not wish to give this in a manner that will take much time and force, but I find it necessary at present to give you the conditions in detail. Later I hope to cover a larger period of experience. I will close for this time, with kind remembrance to our dear friends composing the circle of seven, and re- main as ever, your friend in the spirit, Clytina. IN CELESTIAL UFE. 29 No. 9. July 17, 1897. Dear Spirit Friend in the Mortal : Once again I am permitted to come and continue the subject I have taken up, and if you will stop to consider you will see that I am giving you these messages under great difficulties, from the very fact that I am compelled to clothe them in words that will be comprehended by many and even by yourself; and to give a material description of a spiritual condition is somewhat difficult, as you yourself can realize from the slight investigation you have given to the subject. To be sure, it may seem a very long time to you, but only stop to compare it with the time elapsed since my transition, and you need not compare it with eternity, to understand that your experience has been very slight. I speak of this, as I wish to impress upon your mind and others the true conditions, that you may thoroughly comprehend how little we consider our ordinary mortal life. Now, to begin with the subject. We made every preparation to start upon our journey to visit the different conditions in spirit life, each one retiring 30 TWO THOUSAND YEARS either to his or her room or to walk into the gar- dens. I expressed a desire to be left alone in the garden, and I was conducted to a seat near a beauti- ful fountain, and assured that I would be entirely- secluded from others. I wish to explain that those retiring to their rooms did not do so for the purpose of passing the time in sleep, but to enjoy themselves in reflecting upon the lectures given, and to en- deavor to benefit from the knowledge given out. To me it was rather a novel idea to be left alone, and my mind at first naturally drifted to my dear ones. 'I could see my mother sleeping calmly and peace- fully, but could see no others, though I seemed to be in our home, and also in the spirit home by the garden, and to stoop over and kiss my dear mother's forehead. It must have been perceptible to her, for she awoke and must have seen me, for I distinctly- heard her call to my father that she had had a dream, and had seen Clytina in her spirit home. It was an entirely new experience to me, as I could not realize how I could be in both places at one and the same moment. I shall speak of the solution of this in the near future. While I was thinking of this, I heard my name called, and found them all waiting to start upon our journey. We emerged out of the garden, IN CELESTIAL UFE. 31 through a large massive gate, and into a condition similar to an electric current, or as it seemed, a strong pressure of air completely surrounded us. This was, I learned, a protection against inharmonious influences. We traveled on in this way, passing homes of spirit gardens similar to the one I inhab- ited, but did not see anyone. As we journeyed on, we came into different conditions, and men, women and children were standing about, talking and idly lounging. We passed on. The air seemed to be impregnated with the evil conditions. There was so much suffering. Some were crying, wring- ing their hands in great distress, and calling upon their loved ones whom they had left behind, and others were rudely jesting, and some were wor- shipping strange and grotesque images, offering sacrifices to their gods, as it were, to deliver them from their conditions. Others were worshipping the sun. Indeed it was a sad condition. The force seemed to press against me so strong that I could hardly keep my normal feeling. We quickly re- tired from the scene, and as we came out of the con- dition we all felt better. We finally came to a gar- den and mansion where we entered. This I learned was the home in spirit of Mordecai, a very bright spirit and a learned man of Jewish descent. 3 2 TWO THOUSAND YEARS I find the force too weak to proceed further this morning. I will continue this. I wish to be remem- bered to each one in our circle, and with feelings of gratitude to you, I remain ever faithfully, your friend in spirit, OvYTina. IN CELESTIAL UFE. 33 No. 10. July 20, 1897. Dear Spirit in the Mortal : Once more I am able to come en rapport with you and manifest my presence. I will continue this day the subject in connection with our visit to Mor- decai. You will understand that I am giving to you the most interesting events, and also those which I am able to describe in a manner you can thoroughly comprehend. To begin our subject, as we entered the gate and came into the garden, we met our host himself, who advanced to meet us, having been apprised of our coming, by Plato, through transmis- sion of thought. Therefore we found him prepared to entertain us. I very soon discovered that there was a purpose in our visit there, for after exchanging greetings, we retired to a room in the mansion and seated ourselves; then Mordecai arose, and address- ing those assembled, told us the purpose of our meet- ing together. We were to sit passively, form a circle; then those who had reached the higher con- ditions were to come, if possible, and take on our ethereal body for the time being, and communicate with us in our own natural form. I also learned that we could communicate with those beyond us in 34 TWO THOUSAND YEARS spiritual unfoldment in other ways, but as I under- stand now, this was to us, as materializations would be to you here in the material. To us you might term it etherealization, as the spirit was compelled to clothe itself in the same ethereal condition as our- selves. Mordecai proceeded to explain the condi- tions necessary. It occurred to me that possibly I might be a detriment to the demonstration. I spoke of this, as my experience in this condition was some- what limited. I was assured that I would not in anyway interfere, and we proceeded with the seance, you would term it, or re-embodiment. . After sitting passively for a short time, Aleida, the daughter, sang a song, and then we all joined in singing. The con- ditions became so strong that I could scarcely retain my normal condition. Others noticed this, and my seat was changed to another part of the circle. Very soon light, vapory substances began to appear in our midst, which gradually took on the form of a human being, and first one and then another came, until seven different ones stood in our midst. Mordecai and Plato advanced to greet them, and introduced them to those gathered in the circle. One, Azariel, then spoke to us at some length upon their con- ditions; how they were able to communicate with IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 35 the inhabitants of Jupiter and Mars, those of Jupiter being advanced to our own condition of spirituality. This will show you the condition of Jupiter to-day. It is inhabited by human intelligences as you, only they have progressed far beyond you. Mars has passed on through the scientific a^ge in which you are now entering, the intelligences having solved the problem of right living, also how to put to practical use the inventions brought out by scientific investi- gation, and entered into the more spiritual subjects. They are at the present time nearly in the condition of myself, when I passed out of the body. The earth must also pass through these same conditions before you can hope to begin to realize or feel the effect of spiritual conditions. You are gaining rapidly. In my next I will endeavor to give you some ideas upon the subject of what you term re-incarnation, which may be of interest to you. I have used about all the force I can at this sitting. Kindly remem- ber me to our faithful seven, and accept my sincere thanks for this privilege. I remain as ever, your friend in spirit, ClyTina. 3& TWO THOUSAND YEARS No. ii. July 24, 1897. Dear Spirit Friend in the Mortal : I greet you this day with a feeling of gratitude and kind appreciation for the efforts to assist me to come to you, and if I could describe to you the object fully, you could better understand my feelings, of thankfulness, more especially at this time. I will continue upon the subject taken up in our last communication, as it will be in a direct line with j;he thought which I wish to bring out to-day. Our friend. Azariel (who was the spokesman for the other dear one who had come to us from the higher realms of spirit) then related in detail the object of our meeting, and why he and those with him had come in our midst. He told us that in order to bring about certain spiritual developments in the different spheres of spirit, this opportunity had been taken to come back and perform a mission among those in the lower conditions of spirit, and they intended to re- main in the present ethereal form until this mission was performed, asking the kind thoughts and sym- pathy of each one in the circle to assist them in the completion of their work. To be sure, we were all only too happy to grant this request, and even IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 37 journey with them in person, but our latter propo- sition was thankfully declined. I could see that even Mordecai and Plato were somewhat surprised at the conditions brought out by our circle, and if it were possible, I would be pleased to give you a history of these faithful workers and the glorious mission they performed in the spiritual world, and I may do so at some future time. It will suffice for the present, how- ever, to say that this band of seven were able to assist many a fallen spirit up to a higher condition of spiritual unfoldment, and thereby add to the growth of spirituality in all the many spheres of life, for those below were able to help those still below them, and so on down to the lowest condition of humanity. I will only add here that this condition of re-em- bodiment approaches the nearest to re-incarnation of anything in my experience during the past two thou- sand years, and I do not believe, judging from all the knowledge in my possession, that a spirit can return and inhabit a material form entirely its own, or in the manner taught by theoso- phists. The only conditions in which a spirit may inhabit a material body, to my knowledge, is through the assistance of the spirit inhabiting the 38 TWO THOUSAND YEARS body at the time, for of itself it is too fine, and be- sides the material condition of to-day is entirely unnatural, and therefore it is not in the laws of spirit to maintain an existence. Many conditions occur, which are supposed to be the outcome of re-in- carnation, but it is only a misconception of the true fact. For instance, one here in the body may assert that he has a recollection of a previous existence in the material. This is caused by the pressure of a spirit intelligence becoming so closely en rapport with fche spirit in the body that thoughts and memories of one are transmitted to another. Then again there are spirit intelligences who sincerely believe that they will return to earth, and inhabit another material form, though I can easily trace this to a desire and longing for the material conditions on the part of the spirit. As I understand it, this idea first had its origin among the oriental races, who were very material in their desires, etc., and I assure you that this same theory is upheld and taught in spirit life as here. Just the same, as for instance the sun wor- shipper bows down to the sun; the Chinaman worships his idols: and each spirit as he comes to spirit life, believes in the doctrine taught him in his material experience. If the church onlv realized the IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 39 great amount of anguish and suffering it brought about in spirit life by its erroneous teachings, and could see the multitude seeking Jesus their Saviour, and the bosom of Abraham, I know they would dis- continue such false doctrine and cling to the truth. Therefore to sum it all up, we find that these false and unnatural ideas of the spirit world and its con- ditions, are created in the mind of man, and are not a reality. We are all cognizant of your meeting here to- night, and each one will be present to do his part in the same. Kindly remember me to our seven, and may the light of truth shine still more brightly to each and every one. I will continue at the next opportunity. Ever your friend in spirit and truth, ClyTina. 40 TWO THOUSAND YEARS No. 12. July 25, 1897. Dear Spirit in the Mortal : It gives me great pleasure to give you a message at this time, as I can foresee that our communications may be interrupted for a short time, at least. How- ever, it will not be for long, as there are forces back of all these conditions that will see to it that the chain will not be broken, and while we in the spirit do not wish to dictate, we feel as though we can at least "suggest the line of action, especially when in touch with the spiritual part. To begin, we are all inter- ested in this medium's work, naturally, as we use him to such grand purpose, and while we realize his close connection to Dr. Nichols, his guide, who is a grand, honest and true spirit, still we have all met together, we have talked over the past work and have even taken a look into the future, so you see even we are prone to peer into the great beyond, and wonder what time will bring forth. As I say, we have talked the matter over, carefully and seriously, and unanimously agree that it will only be right and proper to continue our meetings of the mystic seven. Again, we do not wish to be selfish, or at IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 4X least appear to be so, but we find that under the con- ditions now prevalent we cannot well make changes but that will be injurious to our present height of development. Therefore we suggest that the same seven remain as now, and during the time inter- vening, it would be well for each one to devote a little time on Friday evenings to the circle, at least let your thoughts be in harmony with us, and we with you. This will tend to keep up the conditions now formed in an unbroken chain of thought. It will please each one of those spirit friends who are interested in the work, to have you all be ready to meet together at the first opportunity on the return of this medium, and to the convenience of each member. You, my dear friend, have asked me a very direct question, * * and you will be able to gather my answer from what I have given in this letter. We trust it will meet with your approval. You are, no doubt, eager to receive other communications of the same order that I have given you of late, at least I feel this, and will only be too happy to give you, not only more information of the same character, but also follow out other subjects that will be equally as interesting to you and others. I, with other dear TWO THOUSAND YEARS ones, will enjoy being present with you and near, to try the forces of materialization, though. we do not anticipate satisfaction under such public condi- tions. All these conditions for spirit demonstration should be prepared for beforehand. As it is now, it is wonderful that as much is accomplished as there is, but it is our purpose to endeavor to establish con- ditions between the material and spiritual worlds, that will be the means of bringing the two in har- mony. This only means that gradually the material will give way to the spiritual, and we shall only be following in the same line of development as Jupiter and Mars. At some time in the future, I shall be pleased to give you an account of my visits to different spheres of life in the realms of these planets. My dear father and mother are deeply interested in these communi- cations, and others also. I am happy to see that you are pleased with the picture, and I believe it a very perfect likeness of my present appearance. You are certainly aware of the wonderful progress made by the different members connected with our circle, both in the spirit and mortal. I am confident that the wishes expressed in this message will meet with the approval of each one in our circle, and let us all look IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 43 forward to the continuation of our faithful band, as soon as all can meet again. I find that the forces are somewhat absorbed, and each one wishes to tender sincere thanks for the privileges given to manifest, and especially for the great good that has been done. I also wish to thank you again for the manner in which you have kept the promise to me. Let the watchword be Onward and Upward, ever striving for the highest and noblest in life, and we cannot go amiss. With kind remembrances to our seven, I remain ever true through time eternal, your friend in spirit, Cl,ytina. 44 TWO THOUSAND YEARS No. 13. September 18, 1897. Greetings to You, Dear Friend in the Mortai, : It is with pleasure that I communicate with you once again. I have been with you at different times during the past few weeks, and have been able to gather more of the real conditions of life in the material form than ever before, in a personal way at least ; and I have been intensely interested in making a study of humanity, and its conditions of advance- ment along the spiritual lines, especially as this phase • of life is more interesting to me. I have endeavored to give you something of an idea of spirit life, in former communications, which, in part, have been satisfactory to me. However, I could have im- pressed you with a more practical knowledge of it, had you stood by my side in spirit, and witnessed the conditions yourself. Your experience would no doubt have differed from my own, in some respects at least, though I have been very closely en rapport with those who have come to spirit life since my own transition, and have had an opportunity to witness many of the different experiences of spirit transition. I find that without any exceptions, the spirit enters that heaven it has created for itself first; then it IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 45 gradually passes on into higher unfoldment. I have even witnessed the birth of a spirit of the lowest type of man, and watched this individuality grad- ually unfold itself, and become useful to itself and mankind. Man has passed through many peculiar conditions of development, but I have found that in each instance the governmental laws existed in accordance with the development of the people. Thus it is now at the present time, although there are some laws now in force that seem much out of place ; but they are not. It can only be in comparison with the people, at least the majority of them. Strange as it may seem, capital punishment was, and even to this day is, the only method to punish cer- tain crimes in the conditions of life in which it exists. To me it is adding crime, but to those under this law it is called Justice, and is so to them, but as the world advances in spirituality, all this will be changed, as it has been in other planets in the universe which have passed through these same conditions. The manner in which these old ideas of punishing crime were revo- lutionized came about in this wise, just as it is being done to-day. It first found its beginning in the home, as this is the place where it should begin. Those more advanced are beginning to realize this, and 46 TWO THOUSAND YEARS from now on will see some wonderful revolutions in all these subjects. As this idea is carried out, there will be no use for law, for it will gradually evolve into the conditions now existing in spirit life, and each one become a law unto himself. I do not speak from a theoretical view, but from a personal knowl- edge of the conditions passed through by the inhabi- tants of other planets. The most important of all my^ experiences and investigations to me, is, that I have never beheld an individuality become clouded for all time, nor a disintegration of a spirit intelli- gence. This I consider the most important of all. Now I wish to add a few words in relation to my coming to you. I find it is possible for me to come to you in our circle of seven, and at times I can come to you when you are alone in your home, but find it more difficult, and cannot always gather what you wish to give me. However, this is only a matter of development, and I am confident that in the near future I can come to you and communicate with you in a satisfactory manner. My dear father, Has- drubal, was thankful to give you a demonstration of his presence upon the slates, and as our friend Katora has formed conditions for other phases of communication with you, the time is ready for her IN CEIvESTIAI, LIFE. 47 to come. I must close now, with kind remembrance to our faithful band of seven. It is my desire that the best conditions be formed for better results in our circle. Let us continue on until we shall reach all that is possible. The highest and noblest condi- tions can be reached by those who seek. With fond hopes for our success, I am, ever faithfully your friend in spirit, OwYTlNA. 48 TWO THOUSAND YEARS No. 14. September 21, 1897. Dear Spirit Friend in the Mortal : Once again I am permitted to come en rapport with you, and give to you something* interesting con- nected with life, as it is, to me and my friends in spirit, very dear to me. My dear mother and father come first; then others who accompany me here to learn more of life in the material conditions. I also have the pleasure this morning of introducing to you two loved spirits, who come to witness the results received here, in name Katenela and Amarona, who come from a far off planet. Through them I have gained much knowledge of the conditions prior to my existence, both in connection with their home in Jupiter, and also our own little sphere, of which you and I are inhabitants in different conditions. I have gathered from these two friends that the planet Jupiter was, ages ago, in a similar condition to our own in the way of spiritual unfoldment, etc., but has progressed now to a state which is equal, in its most crude form, to our own condition in comparison with the fifth and sixth spheres of spirit life. You can gather an idea from this of the conditions existing IN CELESTIAL UFE. 49 there. I have also had a longing to know just how our own earth came to be inhabited by the human intelligences consisting of man and woman. My esteemed friends tell me that our planet was at one time a very small portion of the sun, which, through natural results of time, was formed into a planet of itself, and in time appeared life, giving plants, grass and flowers and the lower conditions of animal life. Then it was that spirits from other planets came here to make this their home, and in the course of time degenerated from their ethereal condition of spirit, to the material condition now existing on the earth. To be sure there must have been states still back of this, to cause the conditions of life that humanity has passed through since this time, as we realize in ourselves a higher infinite power about us, which seems to shape the destinies of this vast universe. At least under the many experiences in which I have been placed, I have felt and sensed this same wonderful force of infinite power and wisdom. Those beyond say this comes from the higher powers and forces that have advanced far beyond our con- ception. For I myself can see so much beyond that I cannot comprehend, as I know is the same with 50 TWO THOUSAND YEARS you and others seeking the light. We can only real- ize how little we know, when we delve into the sub- jects of life immortal. I find it impossible, just now at least, to give you intelligently an account of affairs existing upon the planets of Mars and Jupiter, though I feel that I shall be able to do so in the near future. The conditions are limited in which I can express myself. However, I am more than pleased with what I have been able to give you, and I will say candidly that our little circle here, together with these sittings, have been most interesting to me. Through me, many have come en rapport with the material conditions here. I am interested far more in the dear undeveloped souls, now inhabiting the mortal form on earth, than I can tell, and when I go with you at times, and witness these crude conditions of life, not only among the poor and poverty-stricken, but among those who are considered wise and intelligent beings, Oh, how I long to gather them together, and proclaim the tidings of joy and gladness to these poor souls who know naught of life, its purposes and effects — even many who compare themselves to the worms of the earth, to lie down and die and become no more. It is horrible to me to think of such ignor- IN CELESTIAL UFE. 51 ance, but I will be patient. I can see my way clearly. It is all coming, and our little seven shall form one of the keys that will open the doors of light to those poor deluded souls. We are even now preparing the way, and may the most infinite spirits of love and wisdom give their aid in this glorious cause. Right will prevail ; truth will conquer. Love hath its power to build up. None can be lost, but let us speed the day. Let not this unhappiness, mingled with sorrow and despair, reign unchallenged. We shall be with you. In union there is power. Let our light shine but bright and clear. Let each one become as a search light, looking far out into the darkness for some poor struggling soul to bring into the realms of joy and bliss. I find I must close. I am thankful for your appre- ciation of my efforts to give you happiness. Wel- come the day of gladness when we may all stand together upon the shores of life immortal. Fond remembrance to our faithful seven. Most faithful throughout eternity, OvYTlNA. 52 TWO THOUSAND YEARS No. 15. September 25, 1897. Dear Spirit in the Mortal : Once again we meet here, at the accustomed time and place, to try and do good to one another. I realize that in my efforts to manifest to you, I am at times unable to control as perfectly, or rather to secure control of the forces generated from the or- ganism (physical) of yourself and this medium, for I do not find the forces exactly the same at any time. I hope to give you something on this subject of con- trolling forces in the near future, but now to our subject. My mind has been very much taken up with the ideas of man's existence upon this earth, since our last meeting here, and I have followed it up more closely since that time, and with the aid of the dear friend from Jupiter, have been able to arrive at some quite satisfactory conclusions in regard to it. First, I am thoroughly convinced that our earth was in- habited by the spirit intelligences who had had pre- vious experiences upon other planets. In my last communication to you, I used the word degenerated, which does not apply directly to those who first took IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 53 on the material form (supplied by Nature as a pro- tection to the spirit), but more directly to their descendants, as you can realize how easy it is for degeneration to take place here in your own material surroundings. To be sure there is a universal law governing this, which I do not fully comprehend. I can realize how the same creative power that created a jelly fish and the animal kingdom, could naturally create a material form for the natural protection of a spirit intelligence, but to me there is nothing in the creation of the animal kingdom that demonstrates that this force of nature would create the immortal soul of man. While some claim that there is only a step between the two, to me one is a reality, while the other, of the animal, is simply a reflection, in a way, of man's individual intelligence. I understand how it was necessary for man, at that time, to exist in a very low and crude condition, with the surround- ings in which he was placed, so that, after all the mythology of the ancients, and even of my own race of people, was not altogether a myth. I am not prepared to state at present just how much, for I do not know that. All this has been exaggerated by man, but I have no doubt that this refers to a still more ancient tradition of the visits of spirits from 54 TWO THOUSAND YEARS other planets. However, all this is difficult for me to demonstrate to you, or for those beyond me to demonstrate in the same way to me. From my own experience up to the present time, I believe this ex- plains the presenc of human intelligences, containing ■the essence of the infinite spirit above, upon this planet, the earth. Progress has made wonderful strides in the past 2,000 years. This is demonstrated by the extinction of certain animals which inhabited this earth, and we see now developing about you here, on the earth plane, a finer, superior condition of the animal king- dom, which, during the present scientific age, will be largely obliterated; and as a consequence, in the spiritual age you will have none of the animal king- dom to speak of, except in a very refined condition, as they have upon Mars to-day. This is sure to come many years hence, but the way is very clear to me, as I have seen the advancement of the past 2,000 years myself. The animal life in water, and the meat used here now by the masses, is just what it should be for them to exist upon, but as time goes on, their posterity will advance until they live upon a much finer quality of food. Then you will see that every- thing will become clarified, and purer, finer in quality. IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 55 I hope to be a witness to these conditions with your- self and our faithful seven. We are well pleased with the prospects ahead of us in our little circle, and I can see that some good results will be obtained from our combined efforts. There is a grand work to do, and I would advise to keep an account of each session here on Friday evening, for unless you have this, one of the import- ant features of the circle will be lost. It would assist to form a condition that would be interesting, not only to yourselves in time to come, but also to others, who will read of this circle and the demonstrations received. Now a word in relation to a very important mat- ter, at least to us in spirit, and all in fact. As I came here this morning, I sense from this medium, a con- dition of disturbed thought, and from what I am able to learn, I find there is a contemplated change. If this is going to take place, let it be as soon as pos- sible, and look well to the surroundings before the change is made, for we know that much depends upon this for our future work, and I would say to this dear medium to be passive. Do not worry. Everything will be arranged satisfactorily. I find I must close. With my best thoughts and fond wishes of success to our seven, and thanks to 56 TWO THOUSAND YEARS you, dear one, for your kindness in affording this privilege. My father will give you something soon of interest. Most faithfully, Cln£eption. In ages past we had developed to a remarkable degree of intelligence concerning the influences of other planets, as well as our own. It is generally understood that the influences of planets are taken from the time of birth. This is very well from a material standpoint, but in order to equalize the spiritual and material, there must be a stronger influence exerted at the time of conception than at birth. Therefore in order to be accurate, the time of conception should be taken into consideration in order to equalize the nature of the individual and conditions in harmony. ■: 154 TWO THOUSAND YEARS You may gather from this that it may then only be a matter of fortune or luck, but no, far from it, for we must remember that conception can take place only at certain times, when the planetary conditions have reached that condition where it is in a perfect equalization with the conditions of the man and woman; so it is not a matter of chance, but resolves itself into a great universal law under which we all are existing. How necessary, then, that perfect harmony should exist between the parents of the child born. How may we expect anything else than dire confusion to come from other than harmonious 'conditions; wealth and poverty, ignorance and knowledge and happiness, all these conditions find their equality in the conditions back of them, for in no single case will you find an exception to this great universal law, which understood by the people, would furnish the guide to happiness. It is also true that as the majority of planets in this universe advance spiritually, the effect will be shown plainly in bringing unfoldment to mankind. I have not the time nor space to treat this subject as it should be, for it is the all important subject of life, for to know oneself is the first principle of suc- cess in life. There is much I could say upon this subject that has been lost to mankind upon this IN CELESTIAL UFE. 155 planet, thereby causing many mistakes to be made. Not enough attention is given to the esoteric. It has been more for material conditions than for the purpose of gaining wisdom and knowledge of wis- dom in the spirit. This is my first attempt to manifest to those in the mortal, and feeling attracted here by the con- ditions, I have expressed myself as best I could under them. I trust I may have the privilege again, and remain yours for the cause of progress in the unfoldment of the soul divine. AlvVIDAS. My Dear Friend: I have good cause to feel happy to-day. It seems as though each meeting brings out more joy than all the rest. I assure you that our kind friend who has used the force at this time is one worthy of thy most serious attention, a learned scholar in 400 B. C. with whom Plato was closely connected as a student. I am sure your questions have been taken up, and an- swered in the only true way. Much of this knowl- edge has been lost, as a great many truths at Alex- andria. We hope to impart to you all the truth we 156 TWO THOUSAND YEARS can. I find I must close as the force is too exhausted to proceed further. Bless you all and my faithful one. I am neater to you each day. You do feel my presence ; you are not mistaken. Ever thine, ClyYTlNA. IN CEIXSTIAI, UFE. ; 157 THE PRECESSION OF THE EQUINOXES. The Divine Years and Ages. Dec. 25, 1897. . Kind Greetings: Once again am I permitted to come and give you the benefit of my experience. We find, by careful investigation, that the preces- sion of the equinoxes through the Zodiac requires a period of twenty-five thousand, nine hundred and twenty years, and the mean motion for a number of years is fifty seconds per year. This observation was based upon the fundamental epoch of the conjunc- tion of the Sun and Moon, which took place in the epoch of Tirvalora, three thousand, one, hundred and two years before the Christian era. There is also great variance among astronomers, as to the position of the poles of the earth, and in order to judge cor- rectly we must be familiar with the spiral motions of t,he magnetic poles, their rate of motion, time of revolution round the earth from east to west, and their revolution from pole /to pole, which would in itself cause a slight variation in its angle. We find that the Earth, then, in passing through the Zodiac, keeps its pole inclined from the plane of its orbit twenty-three and one-half degrees, not vary- ing over one degree and. twenty minutes from this I5 8 TWO THOUSAND YEARS i angle. Then we find that all the great numbers, which have been an enigma to many investigators, apply to this very important phenomena; thus, fifty seconds in one hundred years equals one minute in one hundred and twenty years, and one degree in seven thousand, two hundred years ; therefore calcu- lating the motion of the pole from the period of its being perpendicular to the orbit, over ninety degrees, when it would be in the plane of its orbit, we shall have four distinct periods of time, bearing the rela- tion of four, three, two and one, which will be found to have each a very remarkable astronomical charac- ter. In the latitude of twenty-seven degrees north, which was near Benares, India, to the meridan of which are applied four different sets of astronomical tables of ancient philosophers. A divine year consists, according to ancient as- tronomers, of three hundred and sixty common years. Then we see that in the above motion, seven hundred and twenty divine years equal thirty-six degrees, equal the fourth or Golden Age; five hun- dred and forty divine years equal twenty-seven de- grees, or the third, the Silver Age; three hundred and sixty divine years equal eighteen degrees, or the second, the Copper Age; one hundred and eighty divine years equal nine degrees, or the first, the IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 159 Earthen Age. Thus, during the passage of the pole from one extreme to another, occurred the four cele- brated ages of antiquity, from which the Greeks adopted their ages of gold, silver, brass and iron. These periods will be found to differ by one hundred and eighty divine years, and each portion of the angle moved over will be found to consist of the number nine, multiplied alternately into four, three, two and one. At the same time, we find that at Benares, where the greater portion of astronomical observations were made, during seven hundred and twenty divine years the tropics passed from the equator to thirty-six degrees north latitude, during which time the meridian altitude of the Sun on the shortest day was never less than twenty-seven de- grees, the latitude of this place being naught. Per- petual summer continued through all this period, known as the Golden Age. During the next period of five hundred and forty divine years the tropic passed over twenty-seven de- grees of north latitude and the Sun was always visi- ble at the horizon on the shortest day. This was the Silver Age. Next, during three hundred and sixty divine years, the tropic passed over eighteen degrees, and the Sun on the shortest day was eighteen degrees below the 160 TWO THOUSAND YfiAks horizon, or within the angle of twilight, so there was no absolute darkness. This was the Copper Age. Next we see for one hundred and eighty divine years, the tropic passed over nine degrees nearest the pole. At the same time, at Benares, the Sun was twenty-seven degrees below the horizon in the win- ter, and never rose for several weeks. All was dark and frozen. This was the Earthen Age. I wish to establish these movements and motions beyond question. Then I will take up the planets and their effects. I thank you indeed for this oppor^ tunity. Yours for truth divine, Alvidas. I realize it is in order to wish you a merry Christ- mas and happy New Year, though I do not feel in- spired by that alone, for our work grows interesting and I know we have found a way to interest human- ity. The most intelligent must see the truth. May the highest infinite force of love bless you and my seven. The light is coming. We shall all be under its bright rays. CiyYTiNA. IN CELESTIAL LIEE. l6l EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW. Watchword of All Civilized Countries. February 26, 1898. My Dear Faithful Friend : We have met here with you this day to learn some truths if possible, to lighten mankind on his way. I have been requested to say a few words relative to ( the conditions now prevailing- here upon earth. The confusing conditions will be eradicated only when statesmen learn that there are higher powers than political intrigues, motives and interests ; when they learn the might that exists in truth ; when they learn that the great moral and philosophical ideas which have seized on men's souls are the most efficient, durable forces which are acting in the world ; when they learn that the past and present are not the future, but that the changes already existing in the minds of men are only forerunners, the signs of mightier revolutions. Politicians absorbed in near objects are prophets only on a small scale, and though they may foretell the outcome of the coming election, but the breaking of a deep moral conviction in the mass of men is a mystery which they have little skill to interpret. The future of this country l62 TWO THOUSAND YEARS is to take its shape not from the struggles of parties or leaders for power or station, but from the great principles which are silently unfolding themselves in the minds of mankind. A far higher and more rational conception of freedom than entered the minds of those in past ages is spreading itself and is changing the face of society. Equality before the law has become the watchword of all civilized countries. The worth of a human being is better understood. His worth as an individual on his own account, and not as a useful tool for others' progress, is found to attach a sacredness and dignity to every " man because each man is immortal. Such is the cur- rent of thought. Principles of a higher order are beginning to operate, and the dawn of these ever- lasting lights is a sure omen of a brighter day. Poli- ticians seizing on the narrow and selfish principles expect them to last forever. They live in hopes of their machinery to determine the movements of the world, but if history teaches any lesson, it is the im- potence of statesmen. Happily this impotence is spreading with the spread of light and moral force among the people. In the great conflict between the oriental and western world which was decided at Thermopylae and Marathon; in the great conflict between polytheism and Theism'; in the American IN CELESTIAL LIEE. 1 63 Revolution ; in these grandest epochs of history what was it that won the victory ? Not political manage- ment nor self-interest, but the principles of freedom, moral power and enthusiasm, the divine aspirations of the human soul. Great thoughts and great emo- tions have a place in human history which no his- torian has even given to them, and the future will be more determined by these than by the past. We find in the planetary influences, as taught by astrology, the great fundamental principles underlying these periods of progress. It is a law of that unseen but most certain dominion which even here among the blinding shadows which conceal his immediate work- ings the great infinitive force of all life is administer- ing that they who being set anywhere to do his will, neglect to do it, are replaced by other and more faith- ful instruments. How its operation is in every case to be reconciled with the reality of man's free agency and separate probation we may be unable to perceive ; how amidst the conflicting waves of men's evil wills and rebellious impulses and the mighty tempests of this troubled world, He does yet so rule that all these separate wills, each singly and independent, do all work out together the wise purpose of his eternal counsels. We may be unable to conceive that it 164 TWO THOUSAND YEARS should be so essential to the reality of his Govern- ment. That there is nothing repugnant to human nature in the basis of astrology is proved by the num- ber of great minds which have been led by it when properly prepared by education; and the arguments now held conclusive against astrology get their strength in the minds of the people from no other circumstance than that which formerly was the proof of considerations which were held equally decisive in favor of it, viz., the bias of education. I find I must close for this time. Yours for progress and truth, Alvidas. My Dear Faithful One: I am very happy to realize these truths that have this day been given our friend Alvidas will find good soil to germinate and produce results in accordance with the conditions of life in its march of progress. Bless our loved Seven, and my thoughts shall be directed for the happiness and glory of all. Ever thine eternal, Clytina. IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 1 65 Order, Justice and Harmony Govern this Physical Globe. August 8, 1898. I have endeavored to make the succeeding one more intelligent and instructive, and during this short experience we see the necessity of accuracy, and know that to fully assimilate the science would be the work of many different expressions of life in the material ; for no one life can possibly master all that is con- tained in this infinite science. Each day our mind expands under the broadening influence of its sub- lime wisdom. Many difficulties have crossed cur path, and there are still more to come, the greatest obstacle being the difficulty in surmounting the con- ventionality and intellectuality of clever minds still bound to the senses and their own personal bias. I realize the responsibility incurred on your part in undertaking to place this science before the world, dealing with its causes and effects. We must en- deavor to educate the lower mind of those whom we may come in contact with to a higher plane of thought, and by holding fast to reason we shall make the ideal which is the real practical. In fact, we do not hesitate to give out these truths, for we know l66 TWO THOUSAND YEARS that the time is right for it, and therefore we shall be able to continue with confidence to disseminate the inner truths of this science in a new light to the world, even to the students of astrology. We see behind the planetary symbology there lies an infinite fund of knowledge, the search for which can only lead to wisdom. We see that in this science is found the interpretation of the law which governs this phy- sical globe and this law is order, justice and har- mony. No other system explains so logically the inequalities of the human race in discerning the cause from the effect, and now we begin to realize the vast amount of knowledge to be acquired in our efforts to free ourselves from the bonds which bind us down to the physical and become unlimited in our soul power. In order to give the force to our friend Clytina, I will close for this time. I shall meet you again soon. Yours for wisdom divine, Alvidas. To My Dear Faithful One: I am most thankful to be here and to witness the successful efforts of our friend. It is indeed grati- fying to know that this chain of communication has IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 1 67 become thoroughly established for all time, through which we shall assist in bringing about the perfection of all humanity, for you know my feelings to do good and aid the poor souls in darkness. We have been with you in thought since our last communi- cations. We shall accept the first opportunity to manifest our presence among those of our dear be- loved Seven who may gather here at this place. We are pleased to be in these environments again. My dear loved parents and friends join in loving remem- brance. Thine ever faithful, Clytina. 168 TWO THOUSAND YEARS ASTROLOGY: The Origin of Every Art and Science Known to Afan, or Ever Will Be. January 12, 1899. My Dear Faithful Friend : I am with you again in spirit, and will endeavor to give you some ideas upon astral forces and their relation to planetary rays. Astrology, that is, the eternal and creative forces operating as zodiacal and planetary influences, is the origin of every art and science known to men or that ever will be known. The electric and mag- netic vibrations in the atmosphere, the continuous and gradual change from day to night, the ebb and flow of the tides, the seasons of the year and alter- ations of temperature, times of famine and plenty, epidemics and sickness and crime, the births and deaths of the physical of all organized beings, the vibrations of color and sound, the different stages of life and destiny in members of the same family, im- portant changes and discoveries in the progressive sciences, all are due directly or indirectly to the never ending and varying etherial vibratory forces or IN CEI,ESTIAI, UFE. 1^9 astro-magnetism, which pervade the universe, oper- ating according to its prevailing density and quality upon every atomic part of the earth and all that exists upon it. The fact is there are seven primary orbs in this our solar system, viz. : the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn. These assume various scales of inter-action, according to the plane of manifestation on which their operations fall, as for instance in the seven ages of man, in the seven primary colors of the prism naturally illustrated by the rainbow, in the seven primary sounds of the musical scale, in the seven characters of wisdom, and so on. This number of seven is one of great and mystic influence on human life, and when we stop to consider the ponderous natural forces at work about us from which the activity of this number upon mundane effects is derived, it is little to be wondered at ; and we have learned heretofore, the seventh day in acute disease is considered one of the most critical to the fate of the patient, and after birth the seventh hour decides whether the child will live. In seven days the cord falls off, in twice seven days the eyes follow a light, in thrice seven days the child turns the head; seven months give teeth; twice seven months it sits firmly; thrice seven months it begins 17° TWO THOUSAND YEARS to talk; and four times seven months it begins to walk strongly. After seven years the child comes to the age of reason, and teeth of second set appear ; after twice seven, the arrival of generative power; thrice seven, the hair of manhood is completed ; four times seven, growth ceases ; at thirty-five is the great- est strength; at forty-nine the greatest discretion, and seventy the natural length of life. The peculiar influence of this number has from the earliest ages been attributed to the influx of the seven primary orbs of the solar system in their electro- magnetic actions upon the earth and all that breathes upon its surface. The seven days of the week are derived from the same source, and the successful physician selects his remedies according to astral sympathies with the necessities of his patient. The successful surgeon selects such moments for perform- ing operations which are in astral sympathy with the life forces of his patients and the nature of the oper- ation. The successful agriculturist selects such time for preparing the soil or sowing the seed which are in astral sympathy with the conditions suitable. So with the successful navigator ; wherever we may turn in the region of science and art, whether of an exact or progressive nature, we find a reference in the IN CELESTIAL UFE. 17 1 origin of required force and action to the great celestial machinery. The painter and musician are in constant touch with the astral vibrations on which their arts depend for existence. Heat, light, color and sound are intimately related, all depending upon vibratory forces for their mani- festations. The vibrations of light, when resolved into colors by the assistance of a prism, as for in- stance in the rainbow, produce seven primary sen- sations known as prismatic colors, that is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. It is the vibration of intensity or rapidity in the vibrations which makes the difference in our sensa- tion of color. Yours in truth for all, Alvtdas. My Dear Faithful One; : The science of Astrology is divided into seven branches, Esoteric, Natal, Medical, Horary, National or Mundane, Astrometeorological, and the Higher Spiritual, that has not to do with the material expres- sions. It was in its zenith about 200,000 years ago, no doubt longer. It was first taught by Manu, who had charge of the fourth root race. Bless our dear Seven. Eternal love to all humanity. ClyTina. 172 TWO THOUSAND YEARS "Seek ye first the Kingdom of Heaven, and all these things shall be added unto you." Purification, the first essential to true knowledge. June 15, 1899. My Dear Friend in Truth : We find all real knowledge is based on experience. Man seeks truth, and desires to experience truth for himself to grasp, to realize and feel it within himself, not others' opinions but realization. Many great teachers have sought to instruct the world to help forward the evolution of humanity, and have voiced for the world that which they themselves had experi- enced in their minor consciousness and therefore had realized. Those in the mortal who to-day are seek- ing to probe the intricate problems of life must have the faculty of faith developed in a measure at least to accept the statements made by others, or must get first hand experience for themselves. Now every science has its own methods of investi- gation, whether it be chemistry, geology, astronomy or astrology, and if one desires to become an astrolo- ger he must follow certain rules and methods : First, the planetary and the principles with which the plan- ets correspond and their bearing upon the individual IN CEI«ESTIAI, LIFE. 173 must be carefully studied. Men of pure hearts and lives have sought to give out knowledge with the one desire to aid humanity. All our great teachers have declared there is one universal, underlying all forms of science, creeds, doctrines and dogmas. The sceptic cries out for proof, and when you call his attention to the science of self knowledge to which the life must be consecrated if he would have that first hand consciousness born of experience, he mocks and ridicules. This is only because men of culture, education and intellect are busily engaged in notic- ing facts from without by the objective brain through the senses, a task comparatively easy, because the in- struments needed for such work are ready at hand. The telescope enables mankind to observe facts in nature, obscure to the unaided physical sight, but in the subjective or internal world we have but one in- strument and that is the mind itself. The power of mind when properly guided and directed will analyse mind and see that which is back of it, but thought must be strong, steady and determined ere it can be accomplished, and most of us to-day scatter our thoughts rather than concentrate or focus them. If one wishes to see with the telescope, he must focus it, and if one wishes to see with the mind, the same 174 TWO THOUSAND YEARS method must be used, but as we look about us intelli- gently upon the majority, we find they seek to escape from the mind rather than to use it, or escape from thought rather than to think. In the public schools of this day. education, so- called, is gained at the cost of concentration, and it seems that in this age this quality of concentration is lacking. From the youth upwards the training has been chiefly in externals, so that the faculty for ob- serving the subjective or internal side of things is almost atrophied. Christ taught, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of Heaven, and all these things shall be added unto you," meaning from this that within ourselves, if we did only seek, forces and powers would open up and the key of knowledge discovered. There is a science taught by all masters and teachers, but their pupils are few. In this science is the key of all sciences, but it demands more than intellect or intellectual con- ception. It is in truth the harmonizing power or the Yoga, the science of the soul ; that soul so mighty that the soul is but its instrument, its telescope of observation on this plane. Each must use his own telescope, for though he may gain method and direction and aid, still each IN CELESTIAL UFE. 175 man is and must be unto himself the way, the truth, the life. The first step is and must be purification. The lens of the telescope must be clear to reflect truly. Yours in truth, AlvVIDAS. My Dear Faithful One:: Science proceeds on the belief that our intellects will never be put to permanent confusion as they would be if they were in the presence of a fact which is inexplicable in itself and not simply so in relation to our limited knowledge. Rely on this, the doctrine of special creation has been banished from the world and a flood of light has been thrown on the methods of the divine artificer. Bless our dear seven, Eternal, ClyTina. I- 176 TWO THOUSAND YEARS The Pilgrim* s Progress: How help is obtained at the dark stage. June 17, 1899. My Dear Faithful Friend : I consider this one of the most blessed privileges I can enjoy, and I trust that I can so manifest as to make the most of it in every way. We learn from our last communication that the mind must be clean and purified in order to reflect truly, that is, the mind must first withdraw itself . from the senses and thus become less sensitive to contact from the external side of life. As long as the tumult of the senses and desire nature throw the mind into tumultuous waves, the mind, thus dis- turbed and scattered, cannot reflect its divine nature and cannot distinguish between its desire nature and the divinity of its soul consciousness. Suppose that to some extent this withdrawal from the external outgoing energies has been practiced by the mind. The mind has learned to discriminate between its pleasures and the delights of the animal nature ; yet at this point the greatest battle has often been fought, for this mind having risen into its king- dom has forced quiescence to the animal nature. It IN CELESTIAL UFE. 177 now seeks to use that energy for its own personal gratification, that is, the desires though of the intel- lect and so necessarily higher, are still selfish. The mind, though it has abstracted its force from the pas- sions and gained knowledge, is still selfish, desiring for itself fame, glory, ambition and power. These are the objects now of attraction in its men- tal world, holding out their thin, attractive power to delay and hinder the soul. The mind desires not to blend with the soul but seeks to dominate it: The servant or instrument seeks to become master, all forgetful of its divine self that sent it forth to gather experience for its own individual benefit; and this mind now grown so mighty feels its strength and its power, temptations so subtle that they mask them- selves as virtues, and seek to delude the soul on this plane of the mind, and the curse of separateness is stronger than upon any other. Mine and thine, my fame, me and mine, not thee and thine; and this is the poin t of da nger for all, the great turning point which reaches each individually. Love and devotion alone can help at this dark stage of the Pilgrim's Progress, and if the chains of another soul and its influence can, by the raising power of devotion, soften the hard and cold nature, then there will arise an intense desire for something I7 8 TWO THOUSAND YEARS that it dimly feels yet does not understand, adoring and worshiping something it senses as far beyond the intellect as that intellect is beyond the animal. Then these mental things begin to lose their attrac- tive power, and there comes realization that these pleasures of the mind are no more satisfying than the pleasures of the senses. It now reaches out for something permanent ; be- coming real, it seeks reality. That one moment of desire and aspiration causes a quickening of the life not now of sense or mind, but soul, and this germin- ating seed grows till the soul could no more return to sense and lower mental desires than a man can re- turn to his childhood's toys. All is dark about him. He metaphorically sits down and cries out, "All my gods are taken from me and now what is left ?" And then amidst the strife, the voice of the soul speaks to him through the silence not in words but in consciousness, softly, tenderly, "My son ; awaken to the higher life; give me allegiance; listen for my commands; meditate, and in silence, thou shalt hear me speak." Then he realizes that mighty as knowl- edge has been, the wisdom of the soul has passed him by, and he begins to inspect himself in this new light, for he realizes now the glory of moral and spiritual things. He has found the way, and he IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 179 knows the truth will be revealed, and the life. Verily he lived, seeking to rid himself of self, that more of the divine may be realized, for the pleasures of mind or sense are not compared to the bliss of soul con- sciousness. This is joy, peace and life. Thine in truth, Alvtdas. My Dear Faithful One: We know that as we grow wiser and better the race is improved, for the growth of each unit is vir- tually a gain for the race. Notice that the desire for fame and self has been transmuted into love for hu- manity and service to others. The harmonizing power is at work and we each one become a pupil in the science of the soul, a probationer in the school of love. Bless our dear seven. Eternal, Clytina. l8o TWO THOUSAND YEARS Astrology in the days of Greece and Rome: How it came into disrepute, by abuse. November 14, 1899. My Dear Faithful Friend: In these meetings here it is my purpose to bring this science within the reach and understanding of all persons endowed with an active inquiring mind, owing to the magnitude of the subject and the great amount of time and labor required from a material standpoint, and to reduce a metaphysical science into terms of natural philosophy. It is my desire, however, to reach the multitude of earnest and thinking searchers after truth whose numbers are steadily increasing, and especially among those who wish to have some practical demonstration of the fact that a wise ruler is behind all manifestation of life, guiding and influencing humanity toward perfection, the so-called millenium, in which perfection is the goal. In fact, the day is past for writing a defence of this science, as no amount of argument will convince the sceptic who is either too perverse or too indolent to investigate a science which explains a law that governs all things in the universe. The best test may be applied to all subjects where first hand knowledge is required is experience and reason. IN CELESTIAL LIFE. l8l Thought and experience are the basis upon which this science is based ; the ripened fruit of many years' toil and practice are offered to those who are suf- ficiently thirsty for the knowledge that this science brings to mankind. An investigation by the student into ancient history will demonstrate that astrology is the most ancient of all sciences, and its history can be traced so far- into the past that it may seem a hopeless task to actually discover by mortal means where this science had its origin. In truth it is as old as man, — as old as the universe itself, for it began with it. From Babylonia and the Chaldeans we find a belief in astrology spreading throughout the whole world. Once the religion of a great and mighty race, it taught its people wisely, lifting their aspirations by faith and knowledge as well as reverence through the media of the planetary spirits to the supreme one and universal spirit, the logos of the solar system. Since the days of the happy Chaldeans who were wise by the expansion of their consciousness, could reach the shining ones, the star of astrology seems to have waned and for the multitude to have entirely disappeared and its re-discovery, so to speak, is due to the spiritual activity that is again reviving the wisdom taught the wise teachers of a past age, and l82 TWO THOUSAND YEARS that mystic planet Urania is beginning to manifest its effect upon the children of earth. We desire to see this bright star of astrology continue to rise and shine in all the splendor of its beneficent glory. Berosus, the Chaldean priest, to whom a statue with a gilt tongue was erected at Athens, and who trans- lated the illumination of Bel, an early Babylonian work, introduced astrology into Greece. The Greeks held the old traditions for a time, but it gradually became more an art than a science with the majority, and had so far waned that little of astrology can be found there, and it was left for the Romans to finally destroy the little life that was left in it as an esoteric study, though in spite of govern- mental opposition it flourished in early days of the Roman Empire, but in a very corrupted form. Ever in divine truth, Alvidas. My Dear Beloved Friend: We find that in the days of the Roman Empire, through the pandering of the exponents of astrology to political exigencies, the science became corrupted and nothing more than a form of judicial astrology remained, finally becoming only a form of divina- tion. Bless our dear loved seven. Eternal, my prayers for all, Clytina. IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 183 Liver — Intestines — Kidneys. July 3, 1900. My Dear Faithful Friend: I, too, rejoice that we may come in touch with the divine truth which is now casting its sublime influ- ence with a greater degree of intensity than ever be- fore since the golden age when humanity was living daily in its blessed and holy wisdom, but we are as much in the sight of the infinite, and must arise naturally to our proper position, though the way may seem difficult to follow and obstacles bar our progress, still once we have taken one draught from the fountain of truth we long to be immersed in its beautiful shining waters. I desire to continue our subject of the last meet- ing, as we must pass on through this subject into other important considerations. We referred to the organ known as the liver, and as we find that the mass of the blood becomes loaded with the impuri- ties of the body, it becomes necessary that these should be removed. Here nature steps in and pro- vides a way that these impurities may be removed by means of certain appropriate organs. The prin- cipal organs in this connection are four in number, that is, the liver, intestines, kidneys and the skin. In the first of these the blood passes as it returns to 184 TWO THOUSAND YEARS the heart through the veins, and here is secreted the yellow matter termed the bile, which is discharged into the intestines and becomes mixed with the re- fuse of the food to be rejected from the body. Hence the liver may be considered as the great depurator of the human organism, and accordingly exercises a most important office, and on the due action of which the health of the body materially depends ; and while some may hold this secretion, the bile, will promote digestion, we can infer the reverse when we judge of its effects whenever from the action of vomiting or other causes it enters into the stomach, and be- sides, were it so intended it would be emptied into that organ direct where digestion takes place; but, on the contrary, we discover an increased secretion of bile is ever productive of irritation of the intes- tines, and also its presence in the stomach uniformly excites considerable nausea and frequent vomiting. The second organ for consideration appropriated for purifying the mass of blood is the intestines. Through this organ the food passes after it has left the stomach, having its nourishing part taken up by the lacteals, besides which there is a copious decre- tion of feculent matter from the whole internal sur- face. Thus while one set of vessels takes up nutri- ment and conveys it to the mass of blood, another IN CELESTIAL LIFE. 1 85 discharges the impurities from the blood. The in- testines are of great extent in most animals and are folded in various directions. This is in order to detain the matter which is received from the stomach so that all the nutrition may be thoroughly absorbed from it. The third organ for consideration is the kidneys, the secretion of which is excrementitious. These organs separate from blood superfluous water which becomes charged with various matters, as muriate of soda or common salt, phosphate of lime, puss, etc. These organs exercise a similar office to that of the skin in the performance of their func- tions, and between the skin and the kidneys a re- markable sympathy exists and a deficiency in the quantity of the secretion of one is generally found to be supplied by the other. I am in divine truth for all, Alvidas. My Dear Beloved Soul: We rejoice that we are permitted to continue in the divine wisdom and perform our part in convey- ig truth to the dear children of earth who are in need of the light. I have occupied thy place in the dear circle of seven in thy absence. Our prayers are for the uplifting of humanity to a higher knowl- edge of life. My blessings to our dear seven. Clytina. 1 86 TWO THOUSAND YIARS The Heart and Stomach. July 5, 1900. My Dear Faithful Friend : I am here with you and will continue our subject. We have learned of the effect of anger upon the physical body, and on the same principle of the influ- ence of the intellectual operations. We find the system quieted and also the activity of disease is diminished through the operation of the mild and gratifying passions, hope and confi- 1 dence in our own strength. The stimulating effect of the passions has been known in some cases so vio- lent as to bring on fever, apoplexy and even death of the physical. From the great sympathy existing be- tween the brain and the heart, the passions seem to act particularly on the latter, and the feeling of grief is generally referred to this part. From the nerves also or elongations of the brain accompanying the arteries or ramifications of the heart, we can account for that want of nourishment or deficient supply for the vitality of the system which takes place when- ever the patient is under the influence of grief or sorrow. IN CHJESTIAL LIFE. 1^7 Such being the effect of the intellectual operations on the body, it requires in all diseases an important consideration and serious attention, and we may also add that the abuse of spirituous liquors has a similar influence as these other causes specified in the operation of. producing local derangement, and in fact may be explained in a similar manner, that is, by exciting and continuing irritation in the brain. We will now give some consideration to the heart. This is that organ by which the blood is conveyed to every part of the body, and has two ventricles. The left is higher than the right and is the strongest of all the muscles, therefore when affected by spasms it is of the most violent nature, and from its inces- sant action it is more liable to disorder, more espe- cially from the ossification which retards the velo- city of its circulation and often almost suspended in action, which is termed the pectoral angina, the symptoms of which are very peculiar and the issue fatal. The, motion of the heart is most wonderful. It continues to the utmost period of life, day and night, without interruption, more than one hundred thousand times a day. It is indeed a manifestation of the stupendous wisdom of the infinite and is in nothing expressed more gloriously. 1 88 TWO THOUSAND YEARS The stomach is a compound and spermatic sinewy receptacle for the food, and the seat of the digestion, and when it fails in its operation the whole frame is corrupted, for in it are contained the portions that serve for nutrition, concoction and procreation. The stomach is muscular, very nervous, and indirectly possesses sympathy with every part of the system through its connection with the brain. When the food has gone through the process of digestion it is emptied into the intestines and as it passes through this tube the chyle is taken up by the absorbent ves- sels and by them conveyed to the mass of the blood, from which it is then separated by vessels con- nected with the arteries, or, as they are termed, se- cerning extremities for the support of the body, and in this manner the growth and support of the physi- cal takes place. But while this is going on the old parts of the body are removed by the absorbents and the particles conveyed into the mass of blood. The mass of blood accordingly becomes loaded with im- purities. I am in divine truth eternal, Alvidas. IN CELESTIAL UEE. 1 89 My Dear Beloved Soul: We find that the intention of the infinite was per- fection in that particular state or condition to which the soul was subjected, but the difficulty is that the lower body has ruled instead of the higher self, and has trampled that divine spark of life eternal in the dust of its own ignorance and limitations until they have become as a part of humanity. Bless our dear loved seven. Eternal, Clytina. 190 TWO THOUSAND YEARS Origin of the Body — Absorbent Vessels. July 7th, 1900. My Dear Faithful Friend : Once again I am in control of these forces and will use them as best I can to give truth most essen- tial to the well being of all who desire to exercise their free will and become free. The absorbent vessels form a most important sys- tem in the animal economy, and upon the regular and healthy performance of their offices depends the health of the body. In persons of delicate structure the system is often very tender and irritable, and from this state arises that peculiar morbid condition termed scrofula. In such a state when the loss of the equilibrium of action ensues between the secerning extremities of arteries and the absorbents, an accu- mulation is produced in different parts ; as in certain glands or organs, the cellular membrane and its liga- ments of joints, etc., sometimes ending in ulceration, but it is in age that the most formidable diseases of the absorbent system occur, in consequence of these vessels losing their power of action either from dis- eased structure or debility, especially in glands or parts approaching the texture of glands. Hence the frequency of this morbid condition in the breasts of IN CEUISTIAI, LIFE. 191 females, and the absorbents of the glands once fail- ing to perform their office, an accumulation of gland- ular matter takes place till the ramifications of the nourishing arteries become so compressed that they no longer convey their natural nutricient supply. The absorbent vessels derive their power of acting from the brain, therefore their diseased state is either that of supur or sub-irritation. Sub-irritation will exist locally in an organ and by disturbing its mutation, occasion deranged structure or disposition of lymph in the celluar substance, though the muscu- lar system is no less under the influence of the brain as we have before observed. The origin of the body, we may say, is in the chyle, which passing the lacteals, is then delivered into the sub-clavian, where, mixing with the blood, they proceed together to the right ventricle of the heart, and then being more intimately mixed, circu- late together through the whole system, until after several circulations and secretions at the various strainers of the body, are assimilated so as to make one uniform compound mass, which appears to be nothing else than chyle, altered by the artifice of na- ture, and exalted into blood, there being no appear- ance of anything extraneous mixed with the circulat- ing liquor in the blood vessels than the chyle, with the 192 TWO THOUSAND YEARS exception of what had been separated from it for some special purpose, which being once served, is returned to it once more. Thus again, while the blood is in the vessels it appears to the naked eye to be uniform and homogeneous, but when let out of the vessels, and when cold, it separates spontaneously into two parts, one of these being red in color and fibrous, which coheres into a mass termed Cruor, while the other part becomes thin and transparent, which remains fluid when cold, and being heavier than cruor, sustains and bears it up. This is termed Serum. Thus we have considered the system in a summary way, and I shall give out what is most es- sential for future thought. I am in divine truth for all, Alvidas. My Dear Beloved Soul: Once let the dear humanity receive any inkling of the truth and the knowledge will kindle within their souls a spirit of love and desire to unlock the fetters that bind to the lowest matter shadows and cling to the real, recognizing the wisdom of exercising the free will rather than groping in the dark shadows of fate. My love and prayers to our dear seven. Eternal, Clytina.
