THE WINSKIP FAMILY OF AMERICA ED^A^ARD VVINSHIP Edward V/inship, who stands at the head of the Winship family in Amer- ica, was born in England in 1613. Which gives us cause for children's sake to weep." V ^^ > I' The Winship Family \h America Giving the Line oj Descent from Edward Winship, horn in England in 1613, who came to Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1635, to Jabez Lathrop Win- ship, born in Norwich, Conn., 1752, died in Brookville, Indiana, 1827, with the Record of the Families of His Children and Chrandchildren, with their Line of Descent from William the Conqueror. BY ERNEST B. COLE INDIANAPOLIS, IND November, 1905 TO THE DECENDENTS OF EDWARD WINSHIP Every person of intelligence has a desire to know something of their an- cestry — from who they came, where they lived and their occnpation. It is an old admonition, "Honor thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long in the land the Lord, thy God, giveth thee." How better can we honor them than by preserving the records of their lives? If we do not do this much to preserve their history, how can we expect our own records to be kept? This country is fast filling up with foreigners, and the time is coming when it will be an honor to be able to show that our ancestors for two hun- dred and fifty years have been instrumental in developing,'making and defend- ing this, the greatest country under the sun. In presenting to you this incomplete record of the descendents of Edward Winship, incomplete as it is, it is as nearly complete as could be obtained from the records of the towns in which they lived, and from a thorough search through the principal libraries of New England for geneological and historical facts connected with their lives; and, if it will create or stimulate a desire on the part of his descendents to use the sheets in this work prepared for the purpose of keeping a record of their families, in order that some future gen- eologist may have better and more complete data from which to compile the record of the family, my effort will not have been in vain. The name of Winship was spelled in many ways, namely: Winshepp, Win- shop, Winshape, Winshope, Winchep, Windchepp and Windship. Edward, the founder of the line in America, spelled his name Winshipp, but his descendents dropped one p, and spelled it as it is now commonly spelled, W-i-n-s-h-i-p. The record of Edward Winship will entitle all of his descendents to mem- bership in the societies of "Sons of Colonial Times," "Colonial Dames," and other colonial organizations. The record of Jabez Winship will entitle all his descendents to membership in the "Sons" and "Daughters of the Revolu- tion." At the request of some of the family I include the line of descent of the Winship family from "William the Conqueror." The record of the Winship family in England I have not attempted to ex- amine, leaving this for some member of the Winship family to secure. I desire to thank the members of the present generations for the assist- ance given in the production of the record of their families, and if some of them are more complete than others, it is because they have given it more at- tention, and I regret that some of them are not more complete than they are or as they ought to be. ,, ^r -., ERNEST BYRON COLE. ■■'' / THE WINSHIP FAMILY OF AMERICA JOSEPH V^INSHIP, SON OF EDWARD i Joseph Winship, son of Edward, born in Cambr-lge, Massachusetts, January 21, 1661. Died at sea, Dec. 1765, He married in 1750, Elizabeth Lathrop, born in 1730. She was the only child of Jabez and Elizabeth (Rurn- ham) Lathrop. Jabez Lathrop was the grandson of the Rev. John Lathrop, the founder of the first independent church of London, England. He came to America in 1634, and was pastor of the church at Barnstable and Scituate, R. I., from 1634 to 1653. Elizabeth Burnham was the daughter of Eleazer Burn- ham and Lydia Waterman. Eleazer Burnham was the son of Lieutenant Thomas Burnham. Lydia Waterman was the daughter of Ensign Thomas Waterman and Merriam Tracy was the daughter of Lieutenant Thomas Tracy of Ipswitch. (See records of Burnham and Tracy famihes.) Joseph Winship was captain and owner of a trading vessel, trading be- tween New London, Connecticut, and the West Indies. The following is cop- ied from the Norwich, Conn., town records: *'Capt Joseph Winship sailed from New London, Conn., October 11, 1765. He was spoken off the coast December 18, and was never heard from afterward. Lost in a storm at sea." His son, Joseph, was with him. His home was in New London, Conn. His children were all born in Norwich, Conn. A diagram of the seatings in the church at Norwich, Conn., shows that Joseph Winship owned one of the pews. His daughter, Elizabeth, at the age of fourteen years, was summoned before Justice Richard Hyde to answer to the heinous crime of walking upon the street with another young girl and two boys upon the Sabbath day, there being no religious occasion. His children were: I Joseph, b. — 1750. Died 1752. II Jabez Lathrop, b. 1752. Died 1827. Married Hannah Forsythe. III Joseph, b. 1754. Lost at sea with his father, 1785. IV Ehzabeth, b. 1756. I have often heard my grandmother, the granddaughter of Joseph Win- ship, tell the story, that her grandmother was busy at her housework, when a young bird, followed by the parent bird, flew into the house through an open door and they beat themselves to death against the walls, and she declared it was an omen, that her husband and son were lost. 8 THE WmSHIP FAMILY OF AMERICA 4 3 2 1 Jabez Lathrop Winship son of Joseph, Joseph, Joseph, Edward, born Nor- wich, Conn. 1752, died, Brookeville, Ind., 1827. Samuel H. Parsons Reg't, State Militia, served 6 days on Lexington A.larm (see "Men of Conn, in Revolution"). He removed from New London, Conn, to New York State in 1777, and later to New Jersey. I have heard my grandmother (his daughter) say, '*He was known as Capt. Winship and that he held a commission as captain in the Rev- olutionary War, had heard him tell of often having seen General Washington". I have been unable to find any record of his holding a commission. He removed to Brookeville, Ind. in 1805 and purchased a farm upon which he lived until time of his death.
