G^. E. ^VOOO, Treasurer, Sharon, Fenn. J[lltr Qcluctoi^y. -- .^^ \ I JHE purpose of this booklet is in accordance with -*- the idea Originated at the annual reunion of the Abinah Wood family held at Cascade Park, New Castle, Pa., August 1 6, 1902, when it was suggested that some means be adopted whereby the data and the history of the family might be compiled and condensed from which subsequent facts could be verified and corrected. Considering the fact that when we began our research we had but little available material at hand, we may feel that we have been remarkably successful. Much credit is due to all who have done so much to help in the work. It is by no means completed. This booklet is simply a beginning, but we believe the characteristic qualities of the Wood family of energy and perseverance will come to our aid so that in time there will be very little of importance of its ancestry but what may have been learned. The work of preparing a family record of this kind is rendered more difficult at the beginning than at any subsequent time, for it is then that the interest is less and the searchlight of investigation has not been turned on the ancestral horizon. The booklet contains all the names and data con- cerning the family which the secretary has been able to obtain up to the present time. We need your continued aid and co-operation in the preparation of this work. Note carefully what you think to be errors, discuss the matter with other mem- bers of the family and give us all the benefit of your reasons or doubts. The work is one in which we should all feel an equal interest. It is not an unpleasant task, but rather a pleasure for us thus to seek and to know the ancestry who made our living possible. P. A. WOOD, Secretary. E2C:F>LA.3S^^TOI^"^ One of the most perplexing questions in publishing a work of this kind is an arrangement of records in an order that can be easily comprehended. The plan which we have adopted was suggested by- Col. Elmer E. Wood, of New Orleans, whose persistent and earnest work has secured for us much information relating to our ancestry. You will notice that we have arranged the families alphabetically without regard to the order of descent. The Roman number which follows a name is used as a reference to that person's parents' family number, as used in this book; the figure which follows the Roman number refers to the order of their birth. For in- stance: Take in "Bratt Family I," we find "Elizabeth Ainsworth, I-4." The Roman number I refers to Ainsworth Family I, and the 4 is a reference to the 4th child of Ainsworth Family I; and further we find "Sus- annah R. Wood I-12," which refers to the 12th child of "Wood Family I." In conclusion we will request each one to furnish biographical notes of the living as well as of the dead. This we believe will greatly enliven and render more instructive and interesting our next book. We urge each one to continue to send any additional genealogi- cal dates of births, college graduations, marriages or deaths, so that the record of each family may be brought up to the latest date and rendered as complete and interesting as possible. Those neglecting to furn- ish such data will have no right to complain if they find omissions in their family records of the completed volume. P. A. WOOD, July, 1903. Secretary. ABINAH WOOD, from whose ancestry the present descendants of the Wood family trace their lineage, was born July 7, 1777, in Hopewell township, Cumberland county. New Jersey. The chain of events which transpired in the history and lives of these pioneers is necessarily disconnected. The Woods are undoubtedly of English descent and among the early colonists of New Jersey. Records seem to bear out the fact that Abinah's father, whose name v/as Jonathan, remained a Royalist during the Revolutionary war, refusing to light against the king and, coHsequently, was subjected to heavy fines and penalties for thus sympathizing with the cause of the mother countr)'. We find that Jonathan purchased from a Mr. Stathem a farm containing one hundred acres situated in Hope- well township, Cumberland county, Nev/ Jersey, where he lived the remainder of his life and where his six children were born, viz.: two boys, who died young; Abinah; Hannah, who married ist, Jacob Duffel. Sec- ond, — Reed. Anne, who married ist, — Jones. Sec- ond, — English. Mary, who married — Harris. About 1810 Jonathan died at the age of 70. He bequeathed the fa.'-m to Abinah, the three girls receiving their share in money. Reumah Wood, the mother of Abinah, was a member of a wealthy French family, and a clause in her will would lead us to believe that she was from New Orleans, La. It is as follows: "Together with all the residue of a legacy due me from New Orleans." Shortly after her husband's death she moved to Cam- den, N. J., where she owned or purchased a house on the corner of Third and Plum (now Arch) streets. It was herein 1825 that she died. To this home her daughter Hannah, whose husband was unfaithful, came to live with her children, some years before. When Reumah died she willed her place to Hannah, David Duffel, Jr., Samuel T. Duffel and Daniel Davis. The latter sold his share to David Duffel, Jr. Samuel Tay- lor m^ved to Trenton and David Duffel, Jr., occupied the property until it was sold in 1880 to the United States government for a postoffice. We find the following in the will of Jonathan Wood: "I give and bequeath to my son Abinah a lot of cedar swamp, my timepiece and all my lands are hereby given him." Abinah Wood was married, August 17, 1799 to Su- sannah Humphreys, to which union were born fourteen children, the youngest of whom and the only surviving child, is William Walker Wood, of Andover, Ohio. We learn that Abinah w^as taught the art of naviga- tion by an uncle, Morris. He was, no doubt, a man with a great degree of proficiency as a sailing master, proven by the fact thnt he was given charge of vessels by owners, among whom was no less a personage than Stephen Girard. However this may be, w^e may be assured that he had a laudable ambition to possess a boat of his own. He bought a brig, much against the wishes of his wife. We cannot suppose, however, that the objections of his wife could remain long after he christened the brig, '-Susannah," in her honor. Abinah was at this time very successful as a sea cap- tain and possessed quite a small fortune, but he could not endure to see a friend in trouble without extending a helping hand. He injudiciously went bail for a Smith Mott for ;^4,ooo or ^5,000 which Abinah had to pay. Again he endorsed for his friend. His wife, Susannah, was at this time on the farm. While the English were invading the country, and Abinah was hedged in in the bay, the note fell due. Creditors levied on his proper- ty and took 8 horses, 6 milch cows, 10 cattle, 82 sheep, 29 hogs, 150 bushels of wheat, 172 bushels of oats, 300 bushels of corn, parlor furniture, one year's clothing of flax, 2 carriages, two wagons, other farm imple- ments, I mirror, 9 feather beds, poultry, and then siezed his vessel when he landed. His mother, who was still living, prevented the sale of the farm. We can easily be led to imagine how disgusted and discouraged Abinah was and we are not surprised then that he decided to try to recover his lost forturne in a new part of the country, and renew his faith in human- ity at the same time. One of the results of the War of 1812 was the awak- ening of the American people to the fact that thay had greater and better possessions than those that skirted the Atlantic sea coast. The tide of immigration set in toward the far West, Western Pennsylvania and East- ern Ohio — howling wildernesses that had not become thickly populated, although well explored by the events of the French and Indian war half a century before. In 1820, Abinah bought an equipment and started west with his family, intending to go to Ohio. With road wagon, Hint lock rifle, axe and other tools; v/ith the household effects, of bedding, pots, kettles, etc., the family, riding and walking part of the way, finally reached Fayette Co. Pa., in October, wliere the condi- tion of his wife was such that they could travel no farther. In this county Abinah lived three years, "mauling out' rails from early day until 10 o'clock at night, if moonlight, earning 37^ cents per day. At that time corn meal was $'.50 per bushel; salt, 50 cents per peck; tea, $2.50 per pound, and all necessaries of life proportionately high. His mother urged him to return to New Jersey and live with her. In her last letter to him we learn that she had placed $5,000 in a Philadel- phia bank until he, or his heirs, called for it. She also wrote: "I will put Sam Harris on the farm to care for it until you come back," and the good old lady clos;s her letter with tlie touching appeal: "My Dear Boy, come home! There is plenty for both of us, and more than I can use. Do come home." Abi- nah, it appears, never complied with this touching ap- peal of his mother. We might mention in this con- nectiou that his daughters Susannah and Elizabeth al- ways claimed that there was a fortune in the East for the heirs of Abinah Wood. At least there ought to have been the $5,000 left him by his mother; an aunt, name unknown, who was childless, left a sum of money in a Philadelphia bank for him, besides which was the farm that, it is reported, was valued in 1857 at $75,000. After the expiration of the three years in Fayette county he moved to Birmingham, now a part of Pitts- burg, Pa., where he died September 23, 1852, and where the radial lines of the VVood family, so steadily developed in the east, spread in all directions of the compass. He was buried in Hargey's graveyard, on what was known as Washington turnpike, Pittsburg, Pa., but all traces of the graveyard and the graves are now obliterated. It is not improbable that through the betrayal of friends, the loss of fortune and the many discourage- ments that came to him, that Abinah Wood died a somewhat broken-spirited and disheartened man. He would have been unlike the average mortal had he been otherwise. In person he was a large, stout man, with dark, curly hair. He was universally liked and esteemed, and for many years a class leader in the Methodist church. His rugged but noble character, and pioneer struggles and hardships have not been forgotten by his descendants, who consider him well worthy their emulation. ¥^~r^ SUSANNAH HUMPHR.EYS, the wife of Abinah Wood, possessed strong traits of character and those attributes of womanhood that stamp themselves indeli- bly upon the lives and actions of those who are her de- scendants. Her life of activity, of unselfishness, piety and virtue imparted such qualities that build up and become the foundation of attributes that may charac- terize for generations the acts of her descendants. Some strong v/ell-spring of vitality and force must act as the beginning of that peculiar trait of family character that makes its individualty felt and recognized wherever found. Susannah Humphreys was born January 20, 1783,. either in Maryland or New Jersey, the records that we have not agreeing authentically on the place of her birth. Her mother's name v/as also Susannah, but of other records concerning the mother we have, as yet, found nothing. To return to«the subject of our sketch: Susannah Humphreys was married to Abinah Wood by a Justice of the Peace in Cumberland county, New Jersey, Aug- ust 17, 1799. Her parents were Lewis and &iraa r HiTcih S'Z/ZiX. i? e t (\ Humphreys, who were Quakers and which religion she early embraced. After her marriage to Abinah Wood she became with him a communicant of the Methodist P>piscopal church, although througiiout her life she spoke the "thees"and 'thous" of her early Quaker faith. An incidont is related concerning the meeting of her brother, James, of Clarksville, Ohio, and herself, May 25> 1855. For many years each had believed the other dead. James had been east visiting and on his return he stopped to learn, if possible, anything concerning Susannah. He found her alive and well and after so many years of absence, seeing each other as thougli risen from the dead, the joy of the meeting between the brother and the sister can be better imagined than described. In stature Susannah was a small woman. She ex- hibited, under all circumstances the sincere piety of the true Christian. In complexion she was light; blue eyes. She was a model housekeeper and always had scrupulous regard of her personal appearance, which was very nea1r*and tidy. She was liked by everybody and her native force of character naturally attracted friends in a manner that all who came under her benign influence were benefited. She died at the home of her daughter, Betsy Shaffer, midnight, April i6, 1856. The day of burial is related as being dark, rainy and most dismal. It was in Hargey's graveyard, Pittsburg, that Susannah was laid to rest, surrounded by those whom in life she had loved so well and who, in turn, had held for her the most loving esteem. LEWIS HUMPHREYS, the father of Susannah, one record informs us, came to New Jersey from the south, probably from Maryland. For a long time he lived on Tinton's Island at the mouth of the Delaware river be- tween the states of New Jersey and Delaware. In stature he was a small but strong man and could withstand much hardship. He served with Braddock in the French and Indian War, and later with Wash- ington who sent him once to find the commissary wag- ons that had been caught and stalled in the snov/ on the mountains. This expedition came near ending h's life, as he was almost frozen to death. He reached the wagons, however, and was shown all possible kindness. By wrapping his feet in blankets and applying such remedies as were at hand, he finally recovered from the effects of such a trip. On his way home from the army he became ill with a fever and sought shelter in a hay stack; he then saw a log cabin in the distance and to this he made his way; by stumbling and crawling along with sickness preying upon his strength, he was a pit- iable looking object when he sought relief. For six- teen weeks he lay ill with the fever and, according to the method of doctoring at that time, he was not per- mitted to drink cold water. He managed one day, however, to get a drink of water by chance and from that time his recovery was quite speedy. In religion, he was a Quakej. He died March 4, 1805. c f iiMm "' ur UUNlaRESS 021 548 402 6
