The Fifth Avenue Auction Rooms, Inc., begs re¬ spectfully to announce that it is prepared to undertake the management of the Exhibition and Sale of Collec¬ tions of Paintings and other Art property of special importance. Also the appraisement of Household Effects for the purpose of closing or division of estates; private sale of effects and inventories supporting the claims of holders of fire insurance policies, which are of incal¬ culable value in the adjustment of such claims. Its many years of experience in such matters is a sufficient guarantee that all business entrusted to it will be carried through with entire satisfaction. CONDITIONS OF SALE 1. If there should be a dispute in regard to the bid between two or more buyers the article shall be at once put up and re-sold. 2. Purchasers to give their names and places of residence and to pay a cash deposit of at least 25 per cent, of the purchase money—or the whole of the purchase money if required—in default of which the lot or lots so purchased to be immediately put up again and re-sold. The deposit shall apply to all purchases made at this sale, and not to any one particular lot. 3. Bills payable in cash before delivery. 4. Receipted bills must be presented before goods can be removed. 5. Goods to be removed at the expense and risk of the purchaser, on the morning following each day's sale between eight and twelve o'clock, and the remainder of the purchase money to be absolutely paid before removal. 6. Goods not removed on the morning following each day's sale, between eight and twelve o'clock, remain at the sole risk of the purchaser. 7. No claims allowed after the removal of goods. 8. Articles are exposed for examination and are sold without guaranty of any kind. No goods delivered during the sale. 9. Our record of sales in all cases final. 10. The highest bid shall in all cases be accepted by both buyer and seller as the value against which all claims for loss or damage shall lie. 11. Upon failure to comply with the above condi¬ tions the money deposited in part payment shall be¬ long to the Auctioneer as liquidated damages for pur¬ chaser's failure to complete the sale. Of "Kinkosennin," one of the eight cele¬ brated "Sennin," or hermits, standing on the back of a large carp, which is entirely covered with brown red lacquer. Black lacquer with mother-of-pearl inlay; on the cover stork and plum blossoms; on the sides are bam¬ boo and plum blossoms, and two Chinese characters, "Ju," or Longevity, in form of medallion. Wonderfully dignified face, downcast eyes, hands clasped and rested on the knee; beauti¬ fully modeled drapery, leaving chisel marks which show the skill of sculptor. Specimen of the 15th century. One is Kongara Doji, the red-colored deity, holding left hand up and the right hand down; the other is Sei taka Doji, the white deity, joining both hands on the breast. Specimen of the 16th century. Spe¬ cimen of early Ming. Height, 26^2 in.; width, 32 in. 197. Grand Statue of Kwannon. Gilded wood carving. Seated on a lotus shaped throne, resting on a tripled hex¬ agonal base. Perfect proportions; clasp¬ ing both hands and resting on the knee. Long heart-shaped halo decorated with carving of burning flame, which repre¬ sents sacredness. The skill and success¬ ful carving fully brings out the merciful expression. This statue was the princi¬ pal deity of Jotokuin, a Buddhist temple in the suburbs of Kyoto—was the only one saved when the temple was burned a few years ago, while all the other images of the temple were destroyed. According to Old Japanese legend, there lived some thousand years ago, in a fish¬ ing village near Mio-no-Matsubara (a pic¬ turesque forest of pine trees on the sea shore) in the province of Suruga, a young fisherman whose name was Hakurio. One day he passed the forest on the way home from the sea, he saw a very strange robe with beautiful wings hung on a pine tree. For a few moments he looked at the robe in astonishment, for he had nev¬ er seen such a robe before in this world of ours. Finally he took the robe down. He thought that he would take it home as his treasure. At this instant there ap¬ peared a beautiful fairy, who said to Ha- kurio that the robe was hers. She ask¬ ed him to return it. He did not agree to do so, although he said to her, after a few moments' conference that he would return the robe if she would show him a dance of heaven. As he returned the robe, she put it on—and how gracefully she danced! in heavenly manner and appearance, and she ascended to heaven while Hakurio was in rapture. 247. Silk Kakemono. According to the record this statue was carved by Eshin Sodsu, a high priest, who lived in the 10th to nth century (942-1017), to insure by th'is work of devotion his hopes of future bliss. Contains six drawers, four in full size, one in medium and one smaller. All dec¬ orated in rich gold lacquer on black ground in design of landscape with pine trees and cherry trees in full bloom. Com¬ plete with gold and black lecquer stand. Height, 56 in. (See illustration.) 373- Grand Chinese Screen. Used in palace. An extraordinary work of art, and the most important object ever produced in Peking in early part of Kang- hsi period. It is composed of twelve folds of lacquered wood, elegantly decor¬ ated in incised depressions of various breadths, carefully filled with beautiful tints and slight touches of gold, complete¬ ly forming a picture by the modulated lines left uncut. It is undoubtedly a per¬ fect example of achievement in every point—magnificence, solidity, decorative skill and chromatic harmonizations. The scene represents a garden party in Imper¬ ial Palace ground at the time of Tang Dynasty, in the 8th century. On the cen¬ tre is a magnificent main hall connected with corridors and bridges over an arti¬ ficial pond, to the other halls, pavilions and arbors. There are several groups of mandarins and court ladies both indoors and out, occupied in different sports, such as playing the game of "Go," composing poetry, burning incense, enjoying the gar¬ den scenery, etc. On the border are vases with flowers, incense burners and various symbols of longevity and happi¬ ness. She deeply adored the virtue of Fugen, attendant of Buddha. Fugen is always represented mounting an elephant, and the picture is conceptive that she be¬ came Fugen in her fidelity, and she is de¬ lineated on the elephant's back. 390.
