The firsl measures looking toward a Second Presby- terian Church in the city of Troy were taken on the first day of February, 1826. A subscription was then set on foot for the erection of an edifice for that purpose in the Fourth ward. One hundred and eight persons sub- scribed $11,165, in sums ranging from ^1,000 down to ^5, to be paid to Jeremiah Dauchy, William D. Haight, Robert D. Silliman, Stephen Eldridge, Uriah Wallace and Gideon Buckingham, Trustees, and by them used in the purchase of lots and the erection of the building. Of these original trustees, Mr. Wm. D. Haight is the sole survivor. He worshipped in this church but a few months since, and now resides in Ohio, in a hale old age. On Wednesday, July 12, 1826, the Trustees of the First Presbyterian Church were received by those of the Second at the house of Gideon Buckingham, on Fourth street, next south of the present site of the Troy City Bank. Thence the two Boards, with the ministers pre- sent, repaired to the site chosen for the new church, on 4 SEMI-CENTENNIAL OF THE SECOND the corner of Sixth and Grand Division streets, and in the presence of a throng of spectators proceeded to lay the corner-stone. Prayer was offered by the Rev. Ebenezer Cheever, of Hoosick. The box deposited in the corner-stone bore the names '* Starbuck & Gurley, Iron Founders," and on its cover that of Julius Hanks, and contained daily papers and coins, and a copper plate with the names of the Trustees, and the names of Nehemiah Brown, mason, and John Ayres, carpenter. The address was delivered by the Rev. Nathan S. S. Beman, pastor of the First Presby- terian Church, and the exercises closed with prayer by the Rev. Mr. Bascom of South Carolina. It will be seen, from the date of this transaction, that this church, as a religious enterprise, and as a corporate society, if not as an ecclesiastical organization, fairly reaches this month the end of its fiftieth year; and that this historical discourse, which General Assembly has recommended as proper to signalize our country's centennial year, chronicles also the completion of the church's first half-century. The Rev. Charles G. Finney, at that time in the early vigor of his great powers, and the full tide of his char- acteristic measures and notable labors in evangelistic work, tells in his remarkable and interesting autobio- graphy, now lately published, of his invitation to hold continuous services in the First Presbyterian Church of Troy in the early autumn of this same year; and goes on to state, that dissensions in regard to his methods and doctrines gave rise to propositions and movements for the establishment of a Second Presbyterian Church. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, TROY, N. Y. 5 It is no doubt true that there were such differences of opinion and feeling, and that some who entertained them left the First Church and joined the Second. But the facts already stated show plainly that this church was fairly inaugurated as an enterprise and formed as a so- ciety before Mr. Finney was invited to Troy ; and it is pleasant to feel assured that the church had its origin in no such disagreement among Christians and Presbyteri- ans, but as the consequence of natural and healthful growth. The First Church had stood here alone since 1 791, following at a short interval the church in Lansing- burgh, which, except that of Waterford, was before that time the only Presbyterian Church in this neighborhood. Trny then numbered only about 7,000 inhabitants. West Troy was but just laid out, and contained about fifty houses. St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the First Baptist, and the State street Methodist Churches, were then in existence; but there was no Roman Catholic Church until the next year. The site selected for the Second Church was then a marsh, on the northern edge of the city. The Erie canal had just been finished and opened the year before by Governor DeWitt Clinton ; and this city was receiving its full share of the general impulse given by this great work to business and popu- lation. The northward growth was becoming so rapid as plainly to indicate both the need and the site for the new church. The enterprise received the countenance and co-operation of Dr. Beman and the officers of the First Church, as is evident from their presence and par- ticipation at the laying of the corner-stone ; and the occa- sion seems to have been marked by no unkind feeling. 3a 6 SEMI-CENTENNIAL OF THE SECOND The next record of the enterprise extant is on March TO, 1827, when the congregation resolved to call a pas- tor before selling the pews of the now completed edifice. The Rev. Mark Tucker, then of Northampton, Mass., and before that of the Presbyterian church of Stillwater, N. Y., was almost unanimously chosen, and invited to the pastorate. On Aug. 29, 1827, the Presbytery of Troy, convened at Salem, N. Y., received a communication from several members of the new congregation requesting its organi- zation as a church. Rev. Messrs. Samuel Tomb, Eben- ezer Cheever, and Ravaud K. Rodgers, and Elders John House and Nicholas Masters, were appointed a commit- tee for the purpose. Before the end of the month, the new edifice was dedicated to the worship of God, Rev. Dr. Griffin, the eloquent and distinguished President of Williams College, preaching the sermon. At a special meeting of Presbytery, in Troy, Oct. 30, the Second Presbyterian church was received and placed on the roll, at the request of Joseph Russell, Daniel Sackett and Al- fred Mosher, its commissioners ; Rev. Mr. Tucker was re- ceived by letter from the Presbytery of Albany ; and Elder Gurdon Corning took his seat as the church's rep- resentative. The church, as organized, numbered fifty members, forty-five of whom were from the First church. The next day, Mr. Tucker was installed as pastor. Rev. John Younglove, of Brunswick, presided. Rev. John Kennedy preached the sermon, Rev. R. K. Rodgers, of Sandy Hill, gavr the charge to the pastor, and Rev. Solo- mon Lyman that to the people. Of all these. Rev. Dr. Rodgers, who, after leaving Sandy Hill, was, for forty PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, TROY, N, Y. 7 years, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Boundbrook, N. J., is now the only survivor. The church was fortunate in its first pastor. Dr. Tucker's preaching was characterized by fervid and tell- ing appeals to the emotions of his hearers. His pastoral services were wise, affectionate, assiduous and eminent- ly acceptable. His ministry of nearly ten years laid broad and deep the foundations of the church's pros- perity. Year by year there were large accessions to its membership, both by letter and by profession. Jn 1831, one hundred and fifty-six persons were received on con- fession of faith, as the fruits of a wonderful revival; and in 1834, when its numbers were lessened to form a new church, it had reached a total of 430 communicants. During eight years of Dr. Tucker's ministry, omitting two of which no report is preserved, two hundred and ninety- eight persons were received on profession, and two hun- dred and eighteen by letter. Some members withdrew in October, 1832, to aid in the formation of the Bethel Free Church, which, after attaining considerable pros- perity, declined, and disbanded in 1849 ; and the or- ganization of the Second Street Church, in September, 1834, involved the loss of a much larger number, seven- ty in all, including some of this church's most able and valuable members. Among these should be noted the name of Henry Burden, the fame of whose inventive genius is now world-wide, and whose Christian memory is perpetuated among us by the beautiful Woodside church. These losses, however, had been almost entirely made good, when on May 2,1837, Dr. Tucker was re- leased to become the pastor of the Beneficent Congrega- 8 SEMI-CENTENNIAL OF THE SECOND tional Church ill Providence, R. I. This devoted and saintly man of God afterwards removed to the Congrega- tional Church in Wethersfield, Conn., in which place he continued to reside after growing infirmity of body and mind constrained him to relinquish active work. His last appearance and service in this church were at the dedication of the present edifice, when he offered the prayer; and he died in Wethersfield, March 19, 1875, full of years and labors and honors, followed to his grave by a committee of this church's session, who joined with his later parishioners in the last ofihces of grateful an,d reverent regard. The next pastor was the Rev. Erastus Hopkins, who was installed September 13, 1837. He was brought up in Northampton, Mass., and came here from residence and ministerial labor in a Southern State. He was a man of genial manners, superior abilities and scholarly attainments, and a writer and speaker of decided excel- lence. His four years' service won for him the strong esteem and attachment of his people, who assented with reluctance to his release from the pastorate, October 14, 1841, on the ground of ill-health, and the need of rest and change. After his dismission, Mr. Hopkins had no other pastoral charge, though he did not, for a while, cease to preach. He resumed his early residence in Northampton, Mass., which he represented for a while in the State Legislature ; and died there in January, 1872. It was during the first two years of Mr. Hopkins' pas- torate that those events occurred which resulted in the disruption of the Presbyterian Church. He was Moder- PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, TROY, N. Y. 9 ator of the Presbytery of Troy, at the meeting at Schaghticoke, June 14, 1838, when the Presbytery was divided, in pursuance of the previous division of the General Assembly. This church and its pastor, with the minority of the Presbytery, acquiesced in this action of the General Assembly, and sided from that time with the Old School branch of the church. In 1839, it re- ported a total of 441 communicants— the highest number it had thus far reached. For several weeks, during which ill-health prevented Mr. Hopkins from preaching before his resignation, and ^or several months after it, the pulpit was supplied by Mr. Charles Wadsworth, a licentiate of the Presbytery of Troy. His services were so acceptable that he was unanimously called to be pastor, and ordained and in- stalled as such, February 17, 1842, Rev. Dr. Nott, the distinguished President of Union College, preaching the sermon. Mr. Wadsworth soon established a wide repu- tation as a singularly gifted and brilliant preacher. He loved the quiet of his study more than contact with men and outside parish work. His power was in the pulpit; and there his lively fancy, brilliant rhetoric, and copious and ornate style achieved for him a popularity granted to only a favored few. After eight years of service, con- tinued and disabling ill-health compelled his resignation, to which his people reluctantly yielded; and he was released from his charge, March 5, 1850. After his re- covery, he became pastor of the Arch street Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, and thence, in 1862, he was trans- ferred to Calvary Church, San Francisco — his splendid popular gifts securing him a foremost place among the lO SEMI-CENTENNIAL OF THE SECOND preachers of both cities. Returning to Philadelphia in 1869, Dr. Wadsworth became the pastor of a Reformed Church, which has since become Presbyterian, and which he still serves. The prosperity of this church under his ministry may be measured by its growth during those eight years from 360 to 491 communicants, and the ad- dition in one of the earlier years of nearly one hundred persons on confession of faith. The next pastor was Rev. Thomas P. Field, who came from a Congregational Church in Danvers, Mass., and was installed November 14, 1850. He was a rAan of fine taste, finished scholarship, and elegant culture, a student and thinker, and a quiet yet animated and at- tractive speaker. His three years' pastorate was highly successful and acceptable, and the congregation assented unwillingly to his resignation on February i6th, 1854, in order to accept the Belles Lettres professorship in Am- herst College. Dr. Field is now the highly-valued pastor of the leading Congregational Church in New London, Conn., a church 225 years old. On June 21, 1854, Rev. Elam Smalley was installed fifth pastor of this church. Without special brilliancy of gifts, he brought to his work an ardent piety and devo- tion which made his ministry throughout both efficient and successful, and won him his people's deep and last- ing regard. In the fourth year of his pastorate his labors were interrupted by failing health, which rest and foreign travel did not restore, and he died July 30, 1858, honored and lamented by his people and his ministerial brethren. On May 19, 1859, Joseph T. Duryea, a licentiate of the Presbytery of Nassau, was ordained and installed as PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, TROY, N. Y. II ihe sixth pastor of the church. He came fresh from Princeton College and Seminary with high and well- earned honors, and already noticed as a writer and speaker of unusual gifts and promise. He brought to his work, a contagious ardor and ambition with which the church was not slow to sympathize, and which in- spired the whole congregation, and especially the younger part of it, with an enthusiasm and affection for their young pastor such as few men are favored to com- mand. The congregation increased, the Sabbath-school grew in numbers, and every interest of the church felt the healthful stimulus of the pastor's ability and zeaL His brief service was ended on February 28, 1862, by his acceptance of a call to the Collegiate Reformed Dutch Church of New York City, whence seven years after he removed to a new Presbyterian enterprise in Brooklyn, which he has built up from the foundation into a strong and prosperous church ; and he now stands in the front rank of the ablest and most brilliant scholars and preachers on the roll of our Presbyterian ministry. The loth of May, 1862, only a few weeks after Mr. Duryea's dismission, was the darkest day thus far in this church's history. The terrible fire which ravaged Troy that day, and laid seven hundred buildings in ashes, made the old Sixth street Church one of its earliest victims. A flying brand from the burning rail-road bridge lodged on the spire, and before the danger was fully realized, both the church and the adjoining session house were wrapped in flames, aud beyond the reach of help. Great as the disaster was, it was for a time for- gotten in the dismay and panic of that terrific afternoon^ 12 SEMI-CENTENNIAL OF THE SECOND and the still heavier losses which the congregation sus- tained. More than one hundred families lost their homes with almost all their contents, and a large number their places of business as well, and found themselves at night with only piles of smoking ruins to mark the sites where homes, and stores, and church had so lately stood in peace and prosperity. The blow seemed overwhelm- ing, and all but irreparable ; and hospitable roofs sheltered that night many bereaved and heavy hearts, in doubt and fear as to what the future had in s^ore. And yet the grace of God enabled his stricken people not only to bear the sore affliction with Christian fortitude, but even to avail themselves of it as a helpful providence — a blessing in a very dark disguise. The passage of tlie railroad through Sixth street had done the church a damage such as pecuniary compensation, which had been vainly sought, would not have availed to repair; and the fire's destructive work now opened an opportunity for removal which no other circumstances could have made so favorable. The disaster was, of course, at first utterly overwhelming ; but the rapid reaction and recovery from it brought out a latent strength and spirit in the congregation which fully met the emergency, and which a test less trying would perhaps have failed to develop. Many thought their worldly fortunes utterly ruined ; and all were sorely stricken by the loss of a church home linked with such tender and sacred associations. The Rev. Alfred H. Kellogg, afterwards pastor of the Univer- sity Place Church in New York, had reached the city on Saturday, the day of the fire, to supply the pulpit, and the next day had neither church to preach in nor congre- PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, TROY, N. Y. ^ 13 gation to minister to But coming again by invitation the Sabbath following, he ministered to a large audience gathered in Harmony Hall, and ready to respond with tearful sympathy to the touching and appropriate words in which he referred to their "holy and beautiful house" which had been "burned with fire," and their '^pleasant things " which had been ''laid waste." The tears, how- ever, were soon dried, and sorrow was not long indulged. The congregation met the very next day, May 19, only nine days after the fire, and appointed Jared S. Weed, Ransom B. Moore, Ezra W. Boughton and Horace F. Caswell, a committee to look for a new site. Mr. Weed had already, of his own motion, secured control of the lots on which the church now stands, and at a meeting on July 2, the congregation adopted the committee's report recommending their purchase. The erection of the Session House was at once begun, and pushed for- ward with all speed. In the mean time regular Sabbath morning services were held in Harmony Hall, which was occupied in conjunction with the Fifth Street Baptist Church, which had similarly suffered by the fire ; while for other services the congregation availed themselves to some extent of other church premises, which had been promptly and generously placed at their disposal by the First and Second street Presbyterian, the First Baptist, the State street and North Second street Methodist, and Christ Episcopal Churches. On Nov. 5, the Rev. Daniel S. Gregory, a graduate of high standing of Princeton College and Seminary, and pas- tor for a while of the Presbyterian Church of Galena, Illinois, was installed as pastor of the church ; and just U 14 SEMI-CENTENIsIAL OF THE SECOND before Christmas pastor and people gladly and gratefully entered the now finished and commodious Session House, whose pews were speedily rented, and filled by a large and growing congregation. Much as the people had already done, and in so short a time, they were all the more bent on the project of a new church, the need of which was imperatiyely indicated by a demand for seats which almost at once overran the limits ot the lecture-room. Before the month was out, it was resolved to proceed with the work ; and subscriptions soon reached a point which warranted its commencement. The corner stone was laid by the pastor on July 14, 1864, •with a stirring and eloquent address, in the presence of a large concourse of people ; and the church was dedi- cated on the evening of March 30, 1865, with a sermon by Prof. VVm. H. Green, D.D., of Princeton Theological Seminary, an address by the pastor, and a prayer of dedication by Rev. Dr. Tucker, the venerable first pastor of the church. The following Sabbath found the con- gregation in full possession of their beautiful and com- modious house of worship; and on the second Sabbath of April the pastors, sessions and members of the other Presbyterian churches of the city joined by invitation with this church in the observance of the Lord's supper, in token of their fraternal sympathy with their brethren here in the successful completion of the enterprise. The heavy obligations which the congregation had thus incurred were promptly and nobly met. The total expenditure for site, session-house and church edifice was about ^71.000. Subscriptions sufficed to defray this all but $10,000, which balance was temporarily provided PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, TROY, N. Y. 15 for by a mortgage on the property; and in May, 1865, fifty per cent, of the Systematic Beneficence Fund, which had been in operation in the congregation for some time, was set apart as a sinking fund, which it was calculated would equal the mortgage when due. The final payment was hastened some three years by the generous bequest of $3,000 for this purpose by the loved and lamented Clarence Willard ;* and the mortgage, and with it the last vestige of the building debt, was thus liquidated in the year 187 i. Such Christian zeal and perseverance and self-denial did not fail, as they never do fail, to receive speedily Divine recognition and reward. The spiritual condition of the church, throughout its trying experience, had been satisfactory and promising. The gospel had been faith- fully and powerfully preached ; family visitation had been systematically pursued ; and additions to the mem- bership had been constant, if not specially numerous. But in the early months of 1866, God opened the windows of heaven and poured out upon the church an unusual blessing. Continuous evening services were held and largely attended through March, April and May. A deep and solemn spirit pervaded the people. Christians were moved to great activity and earnest prayer ; and on the first Sabbath of June, one hundred and ten persons were received into the church's fellow- ship on confession of their faith. God's people had laid * The church clock is also Mr. Willard's gift, through a bequest for the purpose of $900. He left the church also $1,000 to be in- vested as a fund for its poor. l6 SEMI-CENTENNIAL OF THE SECOND their carnal things liberally upon his altar ; and now by his grace they reaped spiritual things a hundred fold. On December 17, 1866, Rev. Mr. Gregory was released from his pastorate to accept the charge of a Congrega- tional Church in New Haven, Conn. Thence two years later he removed to the Presbyterian Church of South Salem, N. Y., and "after a short pastorate there he accepted the appointment of Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy, in Wooster University, Ohio. His success and influence as a skillful and able educator have been already marked and recognized. His reputa- tion as scholar, preacher and author is already assured, and promises still greater things in future ; and his name has been lately mentioned in connection with yet more important posts. The present pastor began his labors on the last Sabbath of May, 1867, and was installed on the nth of July. The noteworthy events in the church's history during the subsequent years were rehearsed to you at some length in an anniversary sermon four years ago, and may now be more briefly recapitulated. In the first year of the present pastorate our Young People's Christian Union was organized, with a view to greater system, activity and efficiency in Christian work. The young men and women of the congregation — with some among them not so young in years, but as young as the youngest in zeal and energy— have, during these nine years, right nobly developed and utilized the church's life and power, and justified the Union's chosen motto, " More united and earnest effort in the cause of Christ. " The varied and manifold labors by which PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, TROY, N. Y. I 7 they have honored their Master, served the church, blessed their fellowmen, and enriched themselves — such as open-air services, tract printing and distribution, family visitation, cottage prayer meetings, services in the poor-house and the jail, and labors among the neglected, the vicious, and the destitute— have formed, as they will form, a part of this church's history well worthy of more detailed and special record than space and time will here allow. In 1868, the North Second Street Mission Chapel was built; and in 1869 the Ninth Presbyterian Church was organized there. The enterprise was no new idea. It was attempted, though without success, by Dr. Tucker. A Sabbath School was organized near Mount Olympus, in 1846, superintended by Gurdon Grant, Alexander Snyder,. and other members of this church. In 1856, after a suspension for want ofaroom,it was re-organized by the Young Men's Christian Association, under the superintendence of Mr. F. P. Allen. After another short suspension similarly caused, it was resumed in 1859, in the Wesleyan chapel on Rensselaer street, now turned into a dwelling. On January i, 1866, it was formally transferred to the care of this church. In the spring of 1868, its growth imperatively demanded ampler accom- modations, and this people promptly met the call. Over ^13,000 were subscribed in a fortnight, all but a few hundred dollars by members of this church* Two more lots were bought, adjoining the two already purchased, on the corner of North Second and Jay streets. The corner-stone of a brick chapel, with seats for over four hundred persons, beside infant class and bible class l8 SEMI-CENTENNIAL OF THE SECOND rooms, was laid on July 21, and occupied December 20. Regular Sabbath afternoon service was held after the Sabbath-school, by the pastor of this church and others, until May, 1869, when the Rev, Ninian B. Remick, just graduated from Union Theological Seminary, took charge of the enterprise at the invitation of this church. The congregatioti was organized with 81 members as the Ninth Presbyterian Church of Troy, by a committee of Presbytery, on September 30 ; and on October 28, Mr. Remick, having been regularly called by the new church, was ordained and installed as pastor. The church's career has been one of rapid growth and great prosperity. It now reports 404 members, and a Sabbath School nearly equal to our own. Its expenses, defrayed the first year by this church, to the amount of about $2500, have been gradually assumed by itself, until in the past year it has received from this church only between four and five hundred dollars. The property, worth fully $20,000, is still held by our trustees, and will be readily transferred to the trustees of the Ninth Church whenever they are ready to undertake that self-support which they are planning and hoping soon to reach. The year 1870 was notable for the reunion of the two branches of our Presbyterian Church. This church's gift to the great Memorial P^und was $3,000, all given in addition to ordinary contributions, and all for outside benevolent purposes, with the single exception of the beautitul baptismal font, the gift of one of our oldest and most honored members.* * Miss Eliza Dooliitle. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, TROY, N. Y. 19 The year 187 1 was signalized by the organization of our Women's Foreign Missionary Society. The zealous spirit and active labors of the women of the church in this work have greatly increased the church's interest in and gifts to the foreign field. Their support of Mrs. House in the Siam mission has worthily matched abroad the work long done by our Women's Church Missionary Society through its faithful Bible-reader at home. Mrs. House's recent return from ill-health has made a va- cancy in this special work, which it is hoped may soon be filled. The Mission-band of girls, which honors the pastor by bearing his name, has for some time supported a scholar in the Bangkok mission school. Our Sabbath-school, rather singularly, is younger by two years than the church itself. The First Presbyte- rian had been maintaining three schools — one in the southern district of the city, one in the eastern, and one in the northern. It was not until March 28, 1828, that the latter school was assumed and organized by this church. It was managed by a committee consisting of elders Gurdon Corning, James Wallace, and Alsop Weed, until Mr. Wallace was made the first superinten- dent. The date of his election cannot now be positively ascertained, as the first seven volumes of the Sabbath- school records, like the first two volumes of the records of Session, were lost in the fire ; but it was probably in 1829 or 1830. Elder Stephen W. Dana succeeded him, probably in 1832 ; and his successors have been Elders Charles H. Kellogg in 1844, Homer Merriam in 1847, Elisha Tallmadge in 1849, Ezra W. Boughton in 1859, and Frederic P. Allen in 1867, names which, without 50 SEMI-CENTENNIAL OF THE SECOND exception, deserve the church's honor for their faithful and fruitful service in this great department of her interests. You will have noticed that the church has been un- usually favored in its pastors. The terms of service have not been long ; but this has been in almost every instance caused either bj ill-health, or by calls to other fields. Even in our well-served Presbyterian Church, few con- gregations are favored in fifty years with such fervent piety and zeal as characterized Drs. Tucker and Smalley, such brilliant gifts in sacred oratory as those of Wadsworth and Duryea, such scholarly culture as that of Field and Gregory. And so it may and should be said of the twenty-eight men who have been ruling ■ elders, and the six who have filled the office of deacon, that they have deserved well of the church by their wise service and loyal devotion. Of them all, only the present incumbents now survive. They deserve, it may at least be said, the church's gratitude, and the pastor's hearty recognition of their kindly sympathy and harmonious -<:o-operation. Of the departed, special biographical mention cannot here be made ; but this history would not be complete without at least this passing commemora- tion of the varied but sterling excellence of such men as Corning, Wallace, Weed, Grant, Dana, Thayer, Van Tuyl, Blatchford, Kellogg, Siliiman, Sackett, Merriam, Tallmadge, Nash, Thomas, Adams and Wight. In fact, the older members of the church would probably agree that there was hardly one of them all who did not well serve his church and his generation by the will of God. And it is just as true -that those who from the beginning until now have filled the often trying and often thankless PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, TROY, N. Y. 21 office of trustee have served the church's interests with a sagacity and fidelity worthy of all praise. The church's record has been marked at once by constant ingathering and by great revivals. Few sacra- mental seasons have failed to chronicle conversions. The reception at one time of one hundred and fifty-six, ten of whom are with us still, under the fervid ministry of Dr. Tucker — the addition of nearly one hundred within a year under Mr. Wadsworth, and about forty at one time under Dr. Smalley, and the addition of one hundred and ten by Mr. Gregory on one day, forty- nine of whom are now on the roll — were the fruits of notable awakenings. And the reception of one hundred and two persons within the present year, seventy-two of them on confession of faith, at once proves that these gracious visitations have not ceased, and kindles the hope that they will continue to mark the church's history. The church register has contained thus far the names of 2,335 persons. Twelve of these have given themselves to the gospel ministry, whose names are recorded on a subsequent page. Of these, the oldest survivor, Dr. Boardman, whose praise is in all the churches, has just retired from forty-three years' service in the Tenth Presbyterian church of Philadelphia; and the youngest,. James H. Ross, has not yet completed his studies. This church has been noted throughout its history for a constant and large liberality. In its early years its feivent missionary zeal was marked not only by its spirited monthly concerts of prayer, but also by liberal gifts to the American Board and the Home Missionary Society. Since Mr. Wadsworth's time, it has steadily 2 2 SEMI-CENTENNIAL OF THE SECOND contributed, with rare exceptions, to all the Boards and Committees of our own church ; while it has been un- ceasingly active and open-handed in christian work at home. The erection of these church buildinors, under such trying circumstances, was a noble achievement of christian enterprise ; and the building, so soon after, of the Ninth CltQrch, and contribution since to its support of fully 18. GOO, is a piece of generous well-doing whose memory may well be cherished, both by doers and re- cipients, with grateful satisfaction. The statistics have not been at hand from which to give the church's gifts and expenditures from the beginning; but during the last fifteen years, its benevolent contributions have amounted to over 1165,000, and its own expenses to nearly $192,000. If the new history is to match the old, the church must press on in the same worthy way of habitual and liberal giving for christian purposes at home and abroad. Such is at least a sketch, if not an exhaustive presenta- tion, of our church's history. It furnishes no ground for pride; but it does give reason for humble and joyful thanksgiving. From such a review of the past, christian hearts should turn with high hope and resolute purpose toward the future. Our feet are just reaching the threshold of the second century of our country, and the second half century of our church. It rests with us to do our part, according to the grace given us, to win for the one growing power and brightening glory among the nations, and to make the other an ever increasing blessing to the Israel of God. So may it prove with both — " And cast in some diviner mould, Let the new cycle shame the old." CHURCH MANUAL.
