BY W*} S. BALCH. When I was a child, I spake as a child.— Paul, SECOND EDITION. BOSTON: A, TOMPKINS, 38 CORNH1LL. 1S40, Entered, according to act of Congress, in the year 1839, By Abel Tompkins, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of Massachusetts. STEREOTYPED BY GEO. A. AND J. CURTIS, NEW-ENGLAND TYPE AND STEREOTYPE FOUNDRY. PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION. In offering this Manual to the public, the author would observe, that he has labored with all fidelity to supply a want which has long been felt in the management of Sunday Schools. He hopes he has not labored in vain ; but that many young persons will be incited to cultivate the spirit of true devotion while their minds are suscep- tible to the tenderest impressions. From an experience of several years in the superinten- dence of a Sunday School, the author is satisfied that the arrangement here adopted is the best which has been devised to elicit the attention and interest the feelings of both teachers and scholars. Whoever sees it in operation will approve it. To such as may adopt this Manual it may be proper to give a word of advice in reference to the manner of using it. "When the school is assembled, the Superinten- dent directs the scholars to take the Manual and give attention to the Services. He then reads, in a distinct voice, and the teachers and children follow after, as di- rected in the Services. When the Superintendent says u Let us pray," the scholars rise or kneel, fix their eyes upon their books, which are open before them, and remain silent or repeat after the Superintendent, as he IV PREFACE. directs. All repeat the Lord's Prayer after him, sentence by sentence. The school being seated, the Scripture Lesson is read, either by the Superintendent or some one whom he may appoint, and the hymn sung ; after which the regular lessons are recited. At the close of the school, one or two hymns are sung from the collection in the last part of the Manual. When it is preferred, extemporaneous prayers may be substituted for those here given. The hymns may also be varied at the pleasure of the Superintendent. Those in the Services are in Long, Common and Short Metres, but in the collection there is an ample variety to suit all the tunes in use. Asking an indulgence equal to the mistakes consequent upon a first edition, published at a distance from the author, he commits his little work to the hands of the public, desiring for it the favorable co-operation of the teachers and friends of Sunday Schools. Providence, 1839. PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION. In consideration of the very flattering success which has attended the use of this Manual, and the very gene- ral approbation with which it has been received, the Pub- lisher has been induced to stereotype it, by which he is enabled to offer it at a reduced price. No alteration has been deemed necessary, except the correction of a few typographical errors which occurred in the first edition. Boston, March, 1840. MANUAL. SERVICE I. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Scripture Lesson Christ blesses Little Chil- dren. Jesus said unto his disciples, "Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not ; for of such is the kingdom of God." And he- took them up in his arms, put his hands on them, and blessed them. Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, and said, u Verily I say unto you, except ye be converted and be- come as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. "Whosoever, therefore, shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoso receiveth one such little child in my name, receiveth me." 1. A Morning Hymn. C. M. 1 God of the morning, thee we praise, For thy protecting care ; To thee our little voices raise, In humble praise and prayer. MANUAL. 2 We thank thee, Lord, that thou has been Our guardian through the night, Preserved our lives from death and pain, To see the morning light. 3 This day may we obedient be To thy commandments given ; From ways of sin and error flee, And walk the road to heaven. He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel. C. The Lord is merciful and gracious ; slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. S. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him. C. For he knoweth our frame, he remember- eth that we are dust. S. O thou most high God ; with feelings of filial reverence, we are come before thee, to supplicate thy favor, and offer to thee our ascriptions of thanksgiving and praise. Thou hast mercifully protected us during another week, and brought us together this day, to learn thy word, to sing thy praise, to meditate upon thy goodness, to acquaint ourselves with thy truth and our duty. Grant us thy free Spirit, Lord, that we may improve this opportunity to thine honor and our good. Bless the instructors and the instructed, parents and children, and all who take a part, or feel an interest in this school. And have mercy, O God, upon those children throughout the world who do not enjoy the privileges of Sabbath-school instruction ; nor the means of improving their minds by the true knowledge of thee and thy Son Jesus Christ, whom to know is life eternal. Direct us in the way of duty this day, and through all coming time. Forgive whatever thou seest amiss in us, in thought, in word, or in deed : and finally save us with an everlasting salvation, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 10 MANUAL. Scripture Lesson. Instruction of Youth. My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother. If sin- ners entice thee to sin, consent thou not. If they say, " Come with us," walk not in the way with them ; refrain thy feet from their path. Forget not my law, but let thine heart keep my commandments : for length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add unto thee. Walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous : for the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee, write them upon the table of thine heart : so shalt thou find favor and good understanding in the sight of God and man. 2. Worship of God. L. M. 1 Lord, how delightful 'tis to see A whole assembly worship thee ! At once they sing, at once they pray, They hear of heaven and learn the way. 2 I have been there, I love to go, 'Tis like a little heaven below : Not all my pleasure and my play Shall tempt me to forget this day. 3 O write upon my memory, Lord, The truth and doctrine of thy word ; That I may break thy laws no more, But love thee better than before. SKHVICE III. 1 1 SERVICE III. S. Give ear, O my people, to my law : in- cline your ears to the words of my mouth ; I will utter the sayings of old. C. Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. iS. I will speak of the testimonies of God, and will not be ashamed. T. We will not hide them from their chil- dren, showing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works, that he hath done. C. So we thy people will give thee thanks : we will show thy praise to all generations. S. For he established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he com- manded our fathers that they should make known to their children. T. That the generations to come might know them, even the children that should be born. C. That we might set our hope in God, and forget not the works of God, but keep his com- mandments. AIL Thou art near, Lord ; and all thy commandments are truth. Prayer. Almighty and most merciful God ; we ap- proach thee in the attitude of prayer, and offer 12 MANUAL. unto thee our sacrifices of praise and thanks- giving. We sincerely thank thee for thy past favors so bountifully bestowed upon us in the gift and preservation of our lives, and in the temporal blessings needful for our comfort. We thank thee for the gift of friends, and for all their kindnesses towards us. And we devoutly pray, holy Father, that we may wisely improve all these mercies to thy glory and our good. We humbly beseech thee, God, to bless this school, and make it the means of much good. Enable each one, whether teacher or pupil, so to conduct, that all may profit by this opportu- nity to learn thy word; that as we grow in years, we may grow in grace and in the knowl- edge of our Lord and Savior. Fit us, Lord, for all the duties of life ; for the hour of death ; and for a happy immortality : which we ask in the Redeemer's name. Amen. Scripture Lesson. Fear of the Lord. Come, ye children, hearken unto me, and I will teach you the fear of the Lord. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wis- dom ; and to depart from evil is understanding. The fear of the Lord is to hate evil, pride, arro- gancy, and the evil way. In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, and his children shall have a place of refuge. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. SERVICE IV. 13 By mercy and truth iniquity is purged, and by the fear of the Lord, men depart from evil. By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honor, and life. He that hath it shall abide satisfied ; he shall not be visited with evil. Fear God, and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. Having therefore these promises, dearly be- loved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 3. Gratitude and Prayer. C. M. 1 Almighty Father, heavenly King ! Who rul'st the world above ; Accept the tribute children bring, Of gratitude and love. 2 To thee, each morning when we rise, Our early vows we'll pay ; And ere the night has closed our eyes, We'll thank thee for the day. 3 Our Savior, ever good and kind, To us his word has given ; That children, such as we, may find A certain path to heaven. SERVICE IV. S. Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. 2 1 4 MANUAL. C. O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes. S. Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart. C. Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto thy commandments. T. Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently. C. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way ? T. By taking heed thereto according to thy word. C. With my whole heart have I sought thee : O let me not wander from thy commandments. AIL Blessed art thou, Lord ; teach us thy statutes. Prayer: Thou art worthy, holy Father, to receive the gratitude and praise of all thy creatures ; for thou art good unto all ; and thy tender mercies are over all thy works. We, thy rational off- spring, desire to acknowledge, at this time, that thou art our Father, the Giver of our mercies, in whom we live, and move, and have our being Thine all-seeing eye is always upon us, to behold all our thoughts and actions. O then grant, kind God, so to instruct us that we may walk uprightly, that we may indulge no base pas- sions, no wicked desires, in our minds ; and do no evil in our conduct ; but may we always obey SERVICE IV. 10 thy precepts by leading quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness and honesty. To this end, O God, wilt thou bless this school, its instructors, its pupils, and its patrons, and make it the means of great good to all con- nected therewith. Command thy blessing upon all Sabbath schools, and make them useful in dispensing to young minds the knowledge of thy true character and the great doctrine of salvation. Bless all who attend them. May they wisely improve such opportunities to ad- vance in truth, virtue, and goodness. Remem- ber, in great mercy, those children who are deprived of such blessings, on whose minds the light of revelation has never shone. Extend to them the knowledge of thy truth, and a Savior's love. Finally, Lord, make all mankind see what is the fellowship of thy Spirit, that they may rejoice in thy presence forever. Amen. Scripture Lesson. Love of God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God, for God is love. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy sou], and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first and great commandment. This is the love of God, that we keep his commandments ; and they are not grievous. Whoso hath this world's goods and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love 16 MANUAL. of God in him? If a man say, "I love God," and hateth his brother, he is a liar ; for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen ? And this commandment have we from him, that he that loveth God should love his brother also. If any man love God, the same is known of him. We love him because he first loved us. 4. Sabbath Morning. L. M. 1 Father in heaven, thy ceaseless love Has brought us to this holy day ; Blest with thy kindness from above, Another week has passed away. 2 Grant us, O Lord, a grateful heart To feel thy goodness and obey : Ne'er may we from thy love depart, Ne'er may we leave thy heavenly way ! 3 Grant us this day a willing mind To learn what thou wouldst have us do, And how we may thy favor find, And honor and obey thee too. 4 Thy happy children may we live, Thy happy children may we die ; To all may God our Father give A home of bliss beyond the sky. SERVICE V 17 SERVICE V. S. The works of the Lord are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein. T. Praise ye the Lord. C. I will praise the Lord with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation. S. His work is honorable and glorious : and his righteousness endureth forever. T. He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered : the Lord is gracious and full of compassion. S. He sent redemption unto his people : he hath commanded his covenant forever. T. Holy and reverend is his name. C. I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my supplications. T. Gracious is the Lord and righteous ; yea, our God is merciful. C. Because he has inclined his ear unto me; therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. Prayer. thou, who dwellest in the high and holy place, and also with those who are of humble and contrite hearts ; bestow thy blessing upon us, at this time ; and prepare us to worship thee in sincerity and truth ; that, with filial fear, we may seek thy wisdom and thv grace. Sincerelv 2* 18 MANUAL. do we thank thee for thy goodness of which we have received every day of our existence, and upon which we must depend for every future blessing. Vouchsafe unto us the spirit of hu- mility, of prayer, of trust, and of hope ; that, with simplicity and godly sincerity, we may serve thee all the days of our lives. Graciously pardon all our sins, O God, by turning us from every evil thought and action ; and lead us in the way thou wouldest have us go. Protect us when in danger, and qualify us to resist temptation. O keep us from following the counsel of the vicious, and make us walk in the way of the just, which shine th brighter and brighter unto the perfect day. Then shall our days on the earth be peaceful and joyous, and the evening of life tranquil and happy. Bless, holy Father, to our good, the instruc- tions of thy word. May we grow wiser, better, and happier every day we live ; and at last, meet with all the ransomed of the Lord, to praise thee, through Christ our Redeemer, in a world without end. Amen. Scripture Lesson. Brotherly Love. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God, and every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God. We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth his brother abideth in SERVICE VI. 19 the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth. This is his commandment, that we shoiild be- lieve on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. Owe no man anything, but to love one another ; for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. Let brotherly love continue. 5. Desire of Truth. L. M. 1 Almighty Father, God of Love, To thee I fain would raise my prayer ; May I to thee obedient prove, And be the object of thy care. 2 Assist me, Lord, to know thy will, To read it on thy holy pa^e ; All thy commands may I fulfil, From tender youth to ripened age. 3 In revelation may I find The truths which sanctify the heart, Which elevate the human mind, And heavenly peace and joy impart. SERVICE VI. •S. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsels of the ungodly, nor standeth in the 20 MANUAL. way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. C. Have mercy upon me, Lord, for I am weak ; save me for thy mercies' sake. S. But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly, for himself; the Lord will hear when we call unto him. T. Stand in awe, and sin not ; commune with your own heart, and be still. Cm I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep : for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety. S. There be many that say, Who will show us any good ? All. Lord, lift thou up the light of thy coun- tenance upon us. T. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. C. We will put our trust in the living God. Prayer. We rejoice before thee, Father in heaven, for the expressions of thy kindness towards us. We thank thee for friends and friendship, for food and raiment, for health and comfort, and the unnumbered blessings of life. More especially do we praise thee for the gift of thy Son, whom thou didst sanctify and send into the world ; not to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. We rejoice that we can read, in thy word, the truths he declared, SERVICE VI. 21 the acts of mercy he performed, the precepts he taught, and the promises he made, which are able to make us wise unto salvation. We thank thee, indulgent Father, that, in his condescen- sion, he was not unmindful of little children; but took them in his arms and blessed them. O God, may thy blessing rest on us now assem- bled before thee in the name of thy holy child Jesus : May we learn of him who was meek and lowly, and find rest to our souls. May we be dutiful to our parents, kind to our friends, respectful to superiors, obedient to our teachers, forbearing to our enemies, faithful to our com- panions, and worthy the richest favors thou wilt bestow on us. May we ever dwell in peace and love. Keep us, God, from vice and every evil work ; and lead us in the way we should go. Forgive us our sins, and finally save us with an everlasting salvation, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Scripture Lesson. Obedience to Parents. Children, obey your parents in the Lord ; for this is right. Honor thy father and mother, that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest live long on the earth. Obey your parents in all things ; for this is well-pleasing unto the Lord. A wise son maketh a glad father, but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother. A wise son 22 MANUAL. heareth his father's instructions. Hearken unto thy father, and despise not thy mother when she is old. Hear counsel, and receive instruc- tion, that thou mayest be wise. Cease to hear the instruction that causeth thee to err. Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, or whether it be right. 6. Desire of God's Favor. L. M. 1 In days of childhood may I think On thy bright glories, O my God, On all the tokens of thy love And mercy thou dost spread abroad. 2 O teach my pliant heart to feel Renewing grace and saving love, That I may fix my hopes in thee, And wait for perfect joys above : 3 That as I travel through this world Of sin, of sorrow, guilt, and woe, I may withstand its many snares, And towards thy blissful mansions go. SERVICE VII. S. Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord aputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile. C. My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord ; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. S. For he is not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness, neither shall evil dwell with him. SERVICE VII. 23 C. Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteousness : make thy way straight before my face. S. Let all them that put their trust in thee rejoice : let them ever shout for joy. T. Let them also that trust in thy name be joyful in thee. S. For the Lord will bless the righteous: with favor will he compass them as with a shield. T. I will praise the Lord according to his righteousness. C. And I will praise the name of the Lord Most High. Prayer. O thou, who art the source of life and love ; we, thy dependent children, feel under renewed obligations, at this time, to reverence and adore thee as the greatest and best of all beings. We feel sensible that it is by thy fatherly love, that Ave are permitted to meet before thee for the live-giving purpose of gaining a more perfect knowledge of thy word, which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. And now, Father in heaven, hearken unto the voice of our supplication, and grant us the sincere desires of our youthful hearts. Bless those who are here to teach, with a correct un- derstanding of thy word. May they possess that wisdom that coineth from thee, which is pure, peaceable, gentle,, easy to be entreated, 24 MANUAL. full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. And bless those who are here to learn, with a teachable disposition. Enable them to lay aside all fllthiness, and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word which is able to save their souls. Holy Father, we devoutly entreat thee to ex- tend the same blessings we ask for ourselves unto all the children of want throughout the world. May they all know thee and Jesus Christ the righteous, whom to know is life eternal. Cleanse us, O God, from every sin, from every impure desire ; purify our affections, and sanctify our hearts, that we may love thee more and serve thee better. Fit us for the vicissitudes of future life, and finally receive us to thyself, to praise thee in everlasting songs, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Scripture Lesson. Unity. Be kindly affectioned one toward another with brotherly love ; in honor preferring one another. Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live in peace with all men. Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you ; but that ye be perfectly joined together in SERVICE VII. 25 the same mind, and in the same judgment. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace ; and the God of peace and love shall be with you. Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity. 7. The Praise of God. S. M. 1 O bless the Lord, my soul ! Let all within me join, And aid my tongue to bless his name, Whose favors are divine. 2 O bless the Lord, my soul ! Nor let his mercies lie Forgotten in unthankfulness, And without praises die. 3 'Tis he forgives thy sins, 'Tis he relieves thy pains, 'Tis he that heals thy sicknesses, And makes thee young again. 4 He crowns thy life with love, When ransomed from the grave ; He who redeemed my soul from sin Has sovereign power to save. SERVICE VIII. S. O let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and the reins. 3 26 MANUAL. C. O Lord our God, how excellent is thy name in all the earth ! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. T. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength. S. When I consider the heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained : C. What is man that thou art mindful of him, or the son of man, that thou visiteth him. S. For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honor. T. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands : thou hast put all things under his feet. AIL O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth. Prayer. Ever adorable God our Savior ; while all things around us speak thy wisdom, power, and goodness, we, thy rational creatures, would reverently bow before thee, and yield up the grateful tribute of our hearts. Every day brings fresh evidence of thy kindness to us. Thou lengthenest out our days, and givest us the necessary blessings of life. May we regard every good and perfect gift as coming from the Father of lights, in whom is not the shadow of a turning. SERVICE VIII. 27 We thank thee, kind God, for the repeated opportunities of mental, moral, and religious improvement. May thy word be our light, and thy precepts be deeply engraved on our hearts, and exert a saving influence in our conduct. Smile propitiously on this Sabbath school, its teachers, scholars, and patrons. May our attention never be diverted from the important duties before us, by frivolous and sinful things ; but may we intently contemplate thy truth, and rejoice in thy salvation. And may the instruction here afforded be treasured in the hearts of these children, and be the means of great good to them, in time to come. Forgive us, God, whatever thou seest amiss ; acquaint us with the truth as it is in Jesus ; and prepare us to enter thy heavenly kingdom, and enjoy thee forever. Amen. Scripture Lesson. Charity. Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned. Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, and a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge ; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. Charity suffereth long and is kind ; charity 28 MANUAL. envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly ; seeketh not its own, is not easily provoked ; thinketh no evil, rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth ; beareth all things, be- lieveth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth. And now abideth faith, hope, charity; but the greatest of these is charity. S. My Feet shall visit thine Abode. L. M. 1 When in the Sabbath School we meet To worship towards God's holy throne, O may we come with willing feet, And praise thy name, thou Great Unknown . 2 And when we bend the lowly knee, Or join in praise the tuneful choir, Or raise our humble prayers to thee, Do thou, O God, our thoughts inspire. 3 Wilt thou impart thy sacred love, To warm our hearts, to guide our prayer, And fit our souls for heaven above, That we may serve thee better there. SERVICE IX. S. The Lord hath prepared his throne for judgment ; he shall judge the world in right- eousness. C. I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will show forth thy marvellous works. SERVICE IX. 29 T. The Lord will be a refuge for the oppress- ed, a refuge in times of trouble. S. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee; for thou hast not forsaken them that seek thee. T. Sing praises to the Lord, which dwelleth in Zion ; declare among the people his doings. C. I will be glad and rejoice in thee ; I will sing praise to thy name, O thou Most High. S. The Lord is known by the judgments which he executeth : the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. C. In God have I put my trust ; I w T ill not be afraid of what man can do unto me. Prayer. Our Father who art in heaven ; we are again before thee, as thy devout worshippers, the ob- jects of thy peculiar favor, whom thou hast called to walk in the light of thy truth and in the way of salvation. Prepare our hearts to engage in thy service with that ardor which should ever dwell in the bosoms of Christians. We realize that the preparation of the heart and' the answer of the tongue is from thee. Wilt thou inspire us with the quickening energies of thy Holy Spirit, that we may be thoroughly furnished unto every good word and work ; and present before thee, at this time, an offering acceptable in thy sight, O God, our strength and our Re- deemer. 3* 30 MANUAL. In thy name is all our trust ; for, by the ope- ration of pure and perfect laws, thou governest universal nature. Thou ridest on the whirlwind and the storm, and the clouds are the dust of thy feet. Thy beauties are seen in the mild radiance of the morning, and in the sweet smiles of the evening. Man and beast are sustained by thee. Thou causest the grass to grow, and the flowers to put forth their blossoms. The earth brings forth its increase at thy bidding; and the fishes are sustained in the waters. The birds that fly in the air partake of thy favors and sing thy praise. All creation is full of thy goodness. O may our hearts be warm with thy love, and thy praises ever dwell upon our tongues. We view, with rapture and delight, the highest display of thine ineffable goodness in the gift of thy Son, to be the Savior of the world. He is our Savior, O God, and we rejoice with joy unspeakable, that thou hast so loved us as to give him to save us from our sins. O may we love him with a pure heart fervently, and strive to obey all his precepts, and imitate his virtues. May we look unto him as the author and finisher of our faith. May we follow in his footsteps, and, through him, hope in thine everlasting favor. Bless us, merciful Father, this day, and through all coming time. Forgive us our sins, and save us wholly in thine eternal kingdom. Amen. SERVICE IX. 31 Scripture Lesson. The loay of the Virtuous. Wisdom's ways are ways of pleasantness and all her paths are peace. Great peace have they that love thy law, and nothing shall offend them, All thy children shall be taught of God, and great shall be the peace of thy children. In righteousness shalt thou be established ; thou shalt be far from oppression, for thou shalt not fear ; and from terror, for it shall not come nigh thee. The work of righteousness shall be peace ; and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever. And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure resting- places. Whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the word, this man shall be blessed in his deed. He that keepeth the law, happy is he. God will render to every man according to his deeds ; to them who, by patient continuance in well doing, seek for glory, honor, and immortality, eternal life; — glory, honor, and peace to every man that worketh good. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. 9. Praise for the Sabbath School. L. M. 1 Let us unite to Mess the Lord, That we are taught to read his word — To walk in wisdom's pleasant ways, To seek bis ^ra^e. and siog his praise. 32 MANUAL. 2 While many boys and girls we meet, Breaking the Sabbath in the street, Misspending all this welcome day In foolish talk and wicked play ; 3 We to thy sacred house of prayer, With gratitude, would oft repair, T'adore thy name, to seek thy face, And hear the message of thy grace. SERVICE X. *S. The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, in whom I will trust. C. I will love thee, O Lord, my strength. S. As for God, his way is perfect : the word of the Lord is tried : he is a buckler to all them that trust in him. T. For who is God, save the Lord ? or who is a rock, save our God ? C. Be thou exalted, Lord, in thine own strength : so will we sing and praise thy power. S. Thou art holy, thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. T. Our fathers trusted in thee ; they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. C. I will declare thy name unto my brethren ; in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. S. All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord ; and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. SERVICE X. 33 All. For the Kingdom is the Lord's ; and he is the governor among the nations. Prayer. God of the morning and of the evening ; permit us to present ourselves before thee as humble worshipper?, grateful for past mercies, and desirous of future good. Thou hast dealt very bountifully with us. Our lives and health have been precious in thy sight. May we so improve these blessings, that when we shall leave this world, we may have the satisfaction of knowing that we have not lived in vain. Deeply, God, impress upon our minds an abiding sense of our accountability to thee, for the right improvement of all thy favors. Help us to know our duty, and kindly dispose us to discharge it ; that from childhood to old age, we may escape the condemnation of guilt, and the miseries of transgression. To this end, gracious Father, enable us to obtain a correct knowledge of thy word and will, and of our duty and destiny. May the instruc- tion of this school be blessed to the good of all interested. So dispose all our minds that the truth may be deeply impressed upon them ; and let all the holy affections of the gospel have a residence there. Cleanse thou us from every evil desire; make us rejoice in the hopes and joys of true religion ; that, having ended our journey on earth, we may bo arroptod in hen von 34 MANUAL. above, to praise thee forever, through thy Son our Savior. Amen. Scripture Lesson. The way of Simters. The way of transgressors is hard. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked. They are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. Every one that is proud is an abomination unto the Lord ; though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished. Though the sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be pro- longed, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God. But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow, because he feareth not before God. God will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity ; and he will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. God will render to every man according to his deeds : unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath; tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil. He that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong he hath done. 10. Thanks for the Bible. S. M. 1 The praises of my tongue I offer to thee, Lord, SERVICE XI. 30 That I was taught and learned so young To read thy holy word. 2 O may thy Spirit teach, And make our hearts receive Those truths which all thy servants preach, And all thy saints believe. 3 Then shall I praise the Lord In a more cheerful strain, That I was taught to read his word, And have not learned in vain. SERVICE XI. S. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth his handy work. T. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge. C. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. S. The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. T. The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. C. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoic- ing the heart. S. The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. T. The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. C. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever. 36 MANUAL. S. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold ; sweeter also than honey or the honey-comb. C. In keeping them there is great reward. S. Who can understand his errors ? C. Cleanse thou me from secret faults. T. Then shall we be upright, and we shall be innocent from the great transgression. All. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my Redeemer. Prayer. Lord, our heavenly Father ; in the hallowed name of thy Son, our Savior, we present our supplications unto thee. We most humbly be- seech thee to forgive our sins, by directing us in the way of holiness. May we recognise thy goodness in all the events of thy providence through which we are called to pass ; and as we grow in years, may we increase in knowledge and virtue, resisting temptation, and overcoming evil. We devoutly thank thee for the wise and liberal institutions under which we live ; that we have, in childhood, the means of acquiring such knowledge as shall qualify us for the duties which shall devolve upon us through life, and render us respectable and useful in our day and generation. But we thank thee more devoutly for the instructions of the gospel, wherein is SERVICE XI. 37 unfolded to us a system of grace and salvation, for a lost and sinful world. Help us, O God, to understand the gospel of thy grace, that we may obey its precepts, rejoice in its promises, and receive the blessings of life and immortality. Awaken us all to a sense of our duties, and dispose us to do them. May we be improved by the instructions of this school, and by all the means of thy grace, and be prepared for future usefulness in earth, for triumph in death, and for a blessed immortality at thy right hand. Command thy blessing upon this school ; upon our relations and friends ; upon our enemies, if we have any; and upon all mankind. May thy truth be known in all the earth, and thy saving health amon? all nations. Hear us, O God, in heaven thy dwelling- place, and when thou hearest, forgive. And unto thee shall be all the praise, now and forever. Amen. Scripture Lesson. Ten Commandments. 1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above or earth beneath, or that is in the waters under the earth : thou shalt not bow down thyself to them nor serve them. 3. Thou shait not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. I. Remember ♦he Sabbath day to keep 1 38 MANUAL. it holy. 5. Honor thy father and thy mother. 6. Thou shalt not kill. 7. Thou shalt not commit adultery. S. Thou shalt not steal. 9. Thou shalt not bear false witness. 10. Thou shalt not covet. 11. Coming to God. L. M. 1 Almighty God, to thee on high With reverence would my spirit bow : How frail a creature, Lord, am I, Eternal One, how great art thou ! 2 Thy boundless love invites us near, And bids us look to heaven our home ; As children, then, we will not fear; With our meek offerings, Lord, we come. 3 In heaven, O God, thou nearest us : On thee we ever may depend, And raise our humble voices thus, As to a father and a friend. SERVICE XII. S. The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof, the world and they that dwell therein. C. Unto thee, Lord, do I lift up my soul : in thee do I put my trust. S. Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord ; and who shall stand in his holy place ? T. He that hath clean hands and a pure heart ; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. SERVICE XII. 39 5. He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. C. Show me thy ways, Lord ; teach me thy paths. S. This is a generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O God of Jacob. C. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me ; for thou art the God of my salvation : and for thee do I wait all the day. S. What man is he that feareth the Lord ? T. His soul shall dwell at ease, and his seed shall inhabit the earth. C. According to thy mercy remember thou me, for thy goodness' sake, Lord. Prayer. Almighty and most merciful God ; thy glory is seen in the heavens above and thy goodness in the earth beneath. Day and night testify of thy love and guardian care. Thou art every- where present to behold the thoughts and actions of the sons of men. The very hairs of our heads are numbered, and a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without thy notice. O then, may we feel our constant dependence upon thee, and always walk in thy fear. Keep us from all deception and hypocrisy, give us pure and honest intentions in all that we think, or say, or do. Acquaint us with thy holy laws, and with thy truth : thy word is truth. May we enjoy the 40 MANUAL. moral freedom which it gives. Prosper every laudable undertaking, O Lord, and preserve us from the hard way of transgressors. Fit us for the days of youth. May we avoid the snares of evil, and be preserved from the vices to which we may be exposed. May we be fitted for the active duties of life, that we may fill the stations which we shall be called to occupy, with honor to ourselves and usefulness to others. And when our race on earth is terminated, may we all meet to praise thee in the kingdom of the redeemed, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Scripture Lesson. Humility. The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom ; and before honor is humility. By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honor, and life. Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder: yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility : for God resisteth the proud and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time : casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you. Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. Better is it to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. A man's pride shall bring him low ; but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit. SERVICE XIII. 41 12, VOUTH DEVOTED TO GoD. C. M. 1 How should my soul ascend in prayer Unto the God oi* Heaven, And bless and praise his holy name For all his mercies given. 2 Although I'm young, my ardent wish Shall he to serve my God : I'll love him well, obey his laws, And strive to learn his word. One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after ; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord, to behold his beauty, and to inquire in his temple. T. I will offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing; yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord. C. Hear, Lord, when 1 cry with my voice: have mercy upon me and answer me. 5. The Lord is my light and my salvation ; whom shall I fear ? T. The Lord is the strength of my life ; of whom shall I be afraid ? S. When thou saidst unto me, Seek ye my face ; 4# 42 MANUAL C. My heart said, Thy fare, Lord, will I seek. T. I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. C. Teach me thy way, O Lord, and lead me in a plain path. S. Wait on the Lord : be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thy heart : wait, I say, on the Lord. T. & C. The Lord is my strength and my shield : my heart trusteth in him, and I am helped : therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth : and with my song I will praise him. Prayer. Most holy and gracious God ; by thy power were the worlds created, and all things therein. For thyself hast thou made them, and not for another. Thou hast wisely fitted everything for the place which it occupies, so as to produce order, harmony, and joy. By just and perfect laws thou governest universal nature. But man thou hast created in thine own moral image, possessed of an intellectual, moral, and social nature, by which he is exalted above the rest of thy works, fitted for the society of angels, and destined, in the economy of thy grace, to enjoy and praise thee in a pure and spiritual world, and in a life without end. We thank thee, holy Father, that while thou art mindful to supply the wants of all thy crea- SERVICE XIII. 43 tures ; to govern the universe with perfect regu- larity ; thou art peculiarly favorable to thine intelligent offspring, to bestow upon them both temporal and spiritual favors. Make us to know, and dispose us to discharge most faithfully, the duties of our high vocation. May we use the things of this world as not abusing them ; but improve them to thine honor and our good. Make us humble and obedient ; ever studious to know thy truth, and our duty and destiny. Save us from our sins, and accept us, through the Redeemer's name. Amen. Scripture Lesson. Truth and Falsehood. He that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight. The mouth of them that tell lies shall be stopped. Let the wicked be ashamed, and let the lying lip be put to silence. I hate and abhor lying, but thy laws do I love. He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth slander, is a fool. But now, ye also put off all these, anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another. If ye have bitter envyings and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. Wherefore, putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor. Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another. 44 MANUAL. 13. God hears Us. L. M. 1 God is so good that he will hear Whenever children humbly pray : He always lends a gracious ear To what the youngest child can say. 2 His own most holy book declares, That, as a tender father will, He listens to our lowly prayers, And what we ask will grant us still. 3 He loves to hear a grateful tongue Thank him for all his mercies given ; And when on earth his praise is sung, The cheerful notes are heard in heaven. Sing unto the Lord, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness. T. For his anger endureth but for a moment; in his favor is life. S. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. C. Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me ; Lord, be thou my helper. SERVICE XIV. 45 S. Let all the earth fear the Lord : let all the inhabitants stand in awe of him. T. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, and the people he hath chosen for his in- heritance. C. Our soal waiteth for the Lord ; he is our help and our shield. All. Let thy mercy, Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in thee. Prayer. O thou holy and ever indulgent Being ; we adore thee as the Creator of all beings, and thank thee for thy kindness shown us under all circumstances. Unto thee may we come, at all times, with the fullest assurance of thy fatherly favor, that thou wilt accept our offerings, and assist us in our devotions. Youth and childhood are peculiarly dear unto thee ; and the heart unstained by guilt thou wilt always bless. Help us, then, our God, so to direct our steps that we may be preserved from all sin ; that w r e may follow in the pathway of the just, w T hich shineth brighter and brighter unto the perfect day. May we have a strong and growing faith in thy Son our Savior. Through him may we hope in thy great salvation, the final deliverance of mankind from all sin and misery, death and suffering ; and their introduction into the pure, and perfect, and never-ending felicities of heaven ; where our ransomed race, obedient unto thee, and 46 MANUAL. washed from all sin, shall unite with angels, to praise thee, thou King eternal, immortal, invis- ible, the only wise God, forever and ever. Amen. Scripture Lesson. Contentment preferable to Riches. Let your conversation be without covetous- ness ; and be content with such things as ye have ; for God hath said, " I will never leave nor forsake thee ;" so that we may boldly say, " the Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man can do unto me." I have learned in what- soever state I am, therewith to be content. Godliness with contentment is great gain. Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure, and trouble therewith. Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith. Better is a little with righteousness, than great revenues without right. Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than a house full of sacri- fices with strife. Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is of perverse lips. A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving kindness than silver or gold. A little that a righteous man hath, is better than the riches of many wicked. The rich and the poor meet together, the Lord is the maker of them all. SERVICE XV. 47 14. Be Thou our Guide. C. M. 1 To thee, all-gracious God, we bow, And feel thy sacred power. Which from our infancy till now Has brightened every hour. 2 Still guard our youthful hearts from pride, Vainglory, and deceit, Assured that thou wilt best provide Such comforts as are meet. 3 O teach us all thy saving health, And with thy bounty fed, Give us not poverty, nor wealth, To lift ambition's head. 4 Preserve us in temptation's hour, From evil set us free, For thine the kingdom, glory, power, Through all eternity. SERVICE XV. S. Thy mercy, Lord, is in the heavens ; and thy faithfulness reaches even unto the clouds. T. Thy righteousness is like the great moun- tains ; thy judgments are a great deep; thou preservest man and beast. C. How excellent is thy loving kindness, O God ! therefore do the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings. S. They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house ; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thv pleasure. 48 MANUAL. T. Trust in the Lord and do good ; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verilv thou shalt be fed. S, Delight thyself also in the Lord ; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. C. The meek shall inherit the earth ; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. T. Fret not thyself because of him that pros- pereth in his way, because of the man that bringeth wicked devices to pass. C. For evil-doers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth. 5. Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace. Prayer. Holy Father, although thou art exalted high above our limited views, yet thou graciously condescendest to regard them who are of low estate. Thou hast kindly assured us that thou wilt answer the prayers of such as worship thee in truth. Thou hast never said to the sons of men, " Seek ye my face in vain." In mercy grant that we may come before thee with filial awe, and feelings of deep contrition for all our past sins and errors, and with a full purpose of heart to obny thy commands in time to come. Enable us, O God, to imitate the pure exam- ples of thy well-beloved Son ; and faithfully to SERVICE XV. 49 perform the duties required of us in his religion, by which we are blessed. Reconcile us all, great God, to the allotments of thy providence. Thou shalt not take the name of thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God. By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, they break- out, and blood toucheth blood. Swear not at all. Above all things, my brethren, swear not : neither by heaven, neither by earth ; neither by any other oath ; but let your yea be yea, and your nav. nay, lost ye fall into condemnation. 5 50 MANUAL. 15. Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. Prayer. thou most high God, while prostrate angels adore thee in heaven thy dwelling-place, permit us in this world, dwelling in temples of mortal- ity, to approach thee in the only name by which we may have access unto thee. Unto thee do we lift up our hearts and voices, for thou only art worthy to receive the high and holy tribute of grateful homage. O God, take our attention from the glittering yet delusive objects of time and sense ; and fix our attention on those rich and imperishable treasures which are laid up in heaven for us. In the gospel of thy dear Son may we find that happiness thou hast promised to bestow upon all them who love the truth. In the teachings of thy word, the promises of thy grace, and the faithful discharge of every duty, may we find that rest that remaineth for the people of God. Help us, kind Father, to improve this oppor- tunity, and all the means of thv grace, to the 52 MANUAL. promotion of our good and thy g'lory in the earth. May we never disappoint the fond hopes of our parents and friends, by neglecting to re- gard their wishes, or by abusing the privileges they afford us to acquire needful knowledge of the duties of life ; of thy character, government, and purposes ; and our immortal destiny. Re- ward them with thy favors ; and, with them and us, bless and save all mankind with an everlast- ing salvation, through Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. Scripture Lesson. Moral Precepts. Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil, cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned oue towards another with brotherly love ; in honor preferring one another ; not slothful in business, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; patient in tribula- tion ; continuing instant in prayer ; distributing to the necessity of the saints ; given to hospi- tality. Bless them that persecute you, bless and curse not. Mind not high things, but con- descend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If thine enemy hunger, feed him ; if he thirst, give him drink. Be not overcome of evil ; but overcome evil with good. Abstain from all appearance of evil. SERVICE X\ 11 , : 16. Coming to the Altar. C. Our Father who art in heaven, we praise thee for thy great goodness and thy unspeakable ben- efits bestowed upon the children of men. Thou art great, and greatly to be praised. Thou art worthy of the holiest offering we can bring. Yet thou requirest only the dedication of our hearts to thee, so that we may keep thy com- mandments by loving thee supremely, and our neighbors as ourselves. We thank thee, great God, that thou hast giv- en us a rational existence, and preserved us unto the present time. We thank thee that thou hast favored us with means for the improvement of our intellectual faculties, so that we may be qualified for future usefulness and enjoyment. We thank thee for all the promises of thy grace which regard our future happiness. O may we study to know the things which relate to our peace. May we be obedient and dutiful while young ; industrious, honest, and benevolent, as we advance in years. O may our souls be deep- ly imbued with the principles of pure religion, SERVICE XVII 55 as revealed in the gospel of our blessed Lord and Savior ; and in our lives may we manifest their beauty and power, by acts of virtue, and deeds of kindness. May thy love ever swell our bosoms with feelings of friendship and good- will towards all mankind. Finally, holy Father, may we meet with ev- ery creature in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that in them are, to praise and adore thee in a world without end. Amen. Scripture Lesson. Trice Riches. Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things ; that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, will- ing to communicate : laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. Having food and raiment, let us learn there- with to be content. They that will be rich in this world fall into temptation and a snare. For the love of money is the root of all evil ; which, while some have coveted after, have pierced themselves through with many sorrows. And the times of that ignorance God winked at, but now commandeth. all men every- where to repent. He is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to re- pentance. O thou who hearest prayer, and deliverest out of trouble ; we are come before thee to call upon thy name for help in our affliction, and to seek thy blessing in our necessities. Against the perfect order of thy government have we sinned, and thy laws, which operate continually throughout all generations, have we transgressed. But with thee, O God, is there forgiveness, that thou shouldst be feared. In thine inscrutable providence, which our minds cannot now fully comprehend, thou hast seen fit to afflict one of our number, who now lies languishing on a bed SERVICE I. 123 of sickness. We devoutly pray, great God, for thy special favor to rest •upon that one ; that, with a spirit subdued to thy holy will, he [she] may repose all confidence in thy mercy, which is sufficient for him, [her,] and patiently wait the issue of his [her] sickness. may the faith of him who took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses, impart all its comfort to thy ser- vant in affliction, that, living or dying, his [her] whole trust may be in thee, as the Savior of the world. May the lessons of submission and hope taught in this school now impart to the afflicted mind those joys and consolations which sweeten the cup of sorrow, and induce reconciliation to thy holy pleasure. Bless, holy Father, the means employed to recover the sick and comfort the afflicted, that, if it is thy will, our number may remain entire, and he [she] who is now absent from us be speedily restored to enjoy with us the instruc- tions of this school, to mingle in the joys of loving friends, and be useful and happy on earth. But, O Lord, we would not direct thee ; but learn to submit wholly to thy perfect will. Give gra- ciously unto the sick, unto us, and unto all men thy loving kindness, which is better than life ; a meek and quiet spirit ; a firm faith ; a bright hope; and the joys of true religion, which are unspeakable and full of glory. The Lord will preserve him and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth. The Lord will strengthen him upon the bed of lan- guishing; thou wilt make all his bed in sick- ness. Sing, O heavens, and be joyful, O earth ; and break forth into singing, mountains ; for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted. I will mention the loving kindnesses of the Lord, and the praise of the Lord, according to all that he hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness of God toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses. In all their afflictions he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them : in his love and in his pity he redeemed them, and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old. Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sick- ness and every disease among the people. SERVICE [. 125 Seeking Comfort from God, C. Prospect of Heaven. C. M. 1 There is a land of pure delight, Where saints immmortal reign ; Infinite day excludes the night, And pleasures banish pain. 2 There everlasting spring abides, And never-witlrnng flowers ; Death, like a narrow sea, divides This heavenly land from ours. 3 Sweet fields beyond the swelling flood Stand dressed in living green ; So to the Jews old Canaan stood, While Jordan rolled between. 4 Could we but climb where Moses stood, And view the landscape o'er, Not Jordan's stream nor death's cold flood Should fright us from the shore. n* 126 MANUAL. 3. God is the tower To which I fly ; his grace is nigh In every hour. 2 My feet shall never slide, And fall in fatal snares, Since God, my guard and guide, Defends me from my fears. Those wakeful eyes, Which never sleep, his children keep When dangers rise. 3 No burning heats by day, Nor blasts of evening air, Shall take my health away, If God be with me there. Thou art my sun, And thou my shade, to guard my head By night or noon. 4 Hast thou not given thy word To save my soul from death '? Unto thee, O God, who hearest the cry of helplessness, do we come, to pour out the sor- rows of our hearts, and implore the consolations of thy grace, in our time of trouble. Hearken, O Lord, to the voice of our supplications, and let thy mercy come upon us. Our hearts were warmly attached to our friend and companion whom thou hast seen fit to remove from us by death. We shall never more look upon the liv- ing countenance of our loved friend. The grave enfolds all that remains on earth of one so dear to our affections : but the spirit, pure and disen- thralled, we trust thou hast recalled to thyself, to the full fruition of joys immortal and divine. With this faith, holy Father, we will not sorrow as those who have no hope ; but we will devout- ly thank thee for the gift of thy well-beloved SERVICE II. 129 Son, our Savior, who tasted death lor every man; gave himself a ransom for all to be testified in due time ; and became a propitiation for the sins of the whole world ; that he might destroy death and him that had the power of death, and be for salvation to the ends of the earth. We thank thee for his life, teachings, promises, and resur- rection from death ; and for the assurance given us that as he lives, we shall live also. Sanctify, God, this dispensation to the good of this school, and especially to the bereaved friends of the departed. May we always re- member that life is short, and its duties great ; and, by thine aid, may we all fulfil with faithful- ness thy requirements, that when our earthly career shall terminate, we may have the joyous satisfaction of realizing that we have not lived in vain ; but have wisely improved the time of our sojourning here; and that, by a spirit subdued to thy holy will, we shall, in thine own time, en- ter upon the pure and perfect joys of eternity. Eemember all mankind, holy Father, and in much mercy bless them according to their varied wants. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. And they who shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world and the resurrection from the dead, neither mar- ry, nor are they given in marriage : neither can they die any more : for they are equal unto the angels ; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. We know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dis- solved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Spirit. 4. She has gone. L. May all that we shall do make good impressions upon the minds of our friends who are present to witness our juvenile performances, and also upon our own ; that they and we may renew our deter- minations to live to thine honor and glory in the earth, and spend our time and strength in ex- tending the knowledge of thy truth and salvation among our fellow-men, and in gaining a more thorough acquaintance of its principles ourselves. We thank thee, holy Father, for thy abundant favors which have surrounded us all our days. Thou hast shown us peculiar blessings, for which we will ever be grateful, in permitting us to en- joy the instructions of the Sunday School. May we wisely improve every occasion to know thee and Jesus Christ, whom to know is life eternal. Remember, God, in great kindness, our par- ents, relations, and friends ; and all the patrons and friends of this and all Sunday Schools. Kindly bless the superintendents, teachers, and pupils, in their respective capacities ; and make each and all faithful in the discharge of their du- ties. Bless, O Lord, all the means of instruction throughout the world. May many run to and fro in the earth, and the people learn knowledge; till all shall know thee from the least unto the greatest, all the ends of the earth remember and return unto thee, and all nations whom thou hast made come and worship before thee. May all our doings, O God, and all our plea- SERVICE III. 135 sures be tempered by moderation ; and all our lives be consecrated unto thee, and the service of our own true interests as blended with the interests of mankind. Bless, most merciful God, our beloved country, and preserve it from famine, pestilence, and war. May men in authority rule in righteousness, and in the fear of the Lord. May all our citizens be obedient to the laws of the land; and, by a patriotic adherence to the principles of free gov- ernment, firmly maintain the institutions which our fathers sacredly entrusted to our charge, and hand them down to our posterity, as a guar- anty of the future prosperity of our nation. Let no misrule, abuse of power, or lawless riot, ever stain the fair escutcheon of our country's honor: but may the light of her institutions, and the knowledge, virtue, and happiness of her citizens, be reflected upon those nations which now sit in darkness, and tremble under the rod of tyranny, ignorance, and oppression. Hasten the time, O God, which thou hast promised, when all na- tions shall see thy salvation, and serve and obey thee. Forgive all our sins, we humbly beseech thee, and preserve us from all guilt when tempted to do wrong. Give us a well-grounded hope, and a firm faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, that we may serve thee acceptably all the days of our lives ; and, after death, praise thee with the hosts of the redeemed, in heaven above, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. All. Our Father who art in heaven. &<\ 136 MANUAL Scripture Lesson. Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God which is in thee. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear ; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord. Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. Continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them ; and that from a child thou hast known the scriptures which are able to make you wise unto salvation, through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture, given by inspiration of God, is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness ; that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly fur- nished unto all good works. And e'en if sorrow's vesture O'er our young spirits lies. Our faith will pierce the shadow And point to cloudless skies. 140 MANUAL. O thou ! who art the giver Of all we claim below, Whose throne must stand forever, When earth's proud realm lies low ; O ! aid the Sabbath teacher, And bless the Sabbath School ; Till all shall reach that mansion, Where endless love shall rule. 12. Acknowledgment of Blessings. 6s &4s M. 1 Our Father ! 'tis to thee, Supreme in majesty ! Creation's King ! Thy children now would raise The notes of grateful praise, And in our feeble lays Thy goodness sing. 2 Thy kindness, ever near, Has made us all thy care ; And from above, Rich blessings thou dost pour, From an exhaustless store, To cheer us more and more, O God of love! 3 Our parents, teachers, friends, O Lord ! thy favor lends, Our lot to bless ; Their kindness, day by day, Will lead us in the way From which we need not stray For happiness. 4 But thanks, for more are due, Thy glorious gospel, too, To us is given ; May we its precepts prize, Perform all they advise To make us good and wise, And fit for heaven.
