PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION 
 
 THE need of a handbook of some kind to assist in the labor of 
 compiling the weekly service-list in a suitable and consci- 
 entious manner has been observed so generally on the part 
 of organists, choirmasters and clergy, that I venture to bring to 
 their notice this attempt to meet the requirement, in the hope that 
 it may be found both acceptable and useful. 
 
 It will be seen that the object is to show comprehensively, 
 without the necessity of spending further time and labor in search- 
 ing elsewhere, what hymns and anthems are suitable for every 
 Sunday or other occasion. 
 
 In making the selection, the plan adopted has been, after 
 perusal of the collect, epistle and gospel, together with the proper 
 lessons for the day, to fix upon the, particular subjects which it 
 has been intended by the compilers of the prayer-book and the 
 lectionary to bring to the attention of the Church, and to further 
 this object by selecting such hymns and anthems as appear to 
 reflect and emphasize the same or analogous subjects. 
 
 I trust that an intelligent use of the book may, at the end of 
 the day's worship, produce an impression of that general con- 
 sistency throughout the services which is undoubtedly helpful to 
 the earnest and devout worshipper, but which is often disturbed by 
 the introduction of hymns and anthems either having no connec- 
 tion with the occasion, or being sometimes at variance with it. 
 
 Such further indications have been inserted as would appear 
 to be useful. I shall be glad to receive any corrections and 
 observations from those who use the book, in view of its improve- 
 ment if a further edition should be called for.

PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION 
 
 NEW edition of this handbook having been called for, oppor- 
 
 tunity has been taken to revise the former one in view of 
 adding to its usefulness. The number of hymns and anthems 
 for each day has been greatly increased, the most recently pub- 
 lished anthems having been included, and various tables and lists 
 have been added. These comprise a table of contents, and tables of 
 the movable and other feasts and of the Saints' days, together 
 with lists of anthems suitable to be sung without accompaniment, 
 others for men's voices only, and some for which orchestral parts 
 have been written. 
 
 I have to thank several correspondents who have taken an 
 interest in the handbook by sending me suggestions, of which I 
 have availed myself in this edition.

INTRODUCTION 
 
 jO'VERY clergyman knows the diflicttlty of selecting suit- 
 ■'-^ able hymns for the services, and is also aware of the im- 
 portance of hazing these and the anthems that are to he 
 sung bear some relation to the teachings of the day's services. 
 Unity in the different parts of a service is most desirable. There 
 is a tendency even zvith conscientious and painstaking clergy- 
 men to fall into tlve habit of repeating a comparatively small 
 number of hymns rather than to spend time in seeking others 
 which zvould be more appropriate and equally well knoxtm. 
 
 I have been most fortunate in having with me for over ten 
 ]!ears as my organist and choirmaster one zvhose interest in the 
 service and appreciation of its spiritual benefits are as great 
 as his ability in his technical work. 
 
 I am not without hope and belief that Mr. Randall's ex- 
 perience at St. Andrew's, zvhere the appointment of hymns and 
 anthems is conscientiously and carefully made, has been helpful 
 to him in this compilation, zvlwch now goes forth to the public 
 with my most cordial commendation and belief that it zvill prove 
 especially valuable to the clergy, upon whom is imposed pri- 
 marily the responsibility of ordering the services of the Church.
