LONDON: GEORGE BELL AND SONS. 1879. om apes Mi y oh Lit CR LR pee ld Oe tan 4 PREFACE. TEN years ago, when I edited the text of the Cambridge MS. of the Testamenta XII. Patriarcharum, and a colla- tion of the Oxford MS. with it, I was not aware of the existence of the two other MSS. at Rome and Patmos respectively. On my becoming aware of these further authorities for the text, I endeavoured at once to obtain collations of them. After experiencing several failures in the case of the Roman MS., I was at last successful through the kindness of Dr. Ignazio Guidi, to whom I return my most sincere thanks. The collation which follows is a copy of that sent to me by him, save that I have occasionally omitted variations such as itacisms or the like, in cases where the sense of the passage is not at all affected. When this MS., or the following, agrees with the Oxford against the Cambridge MS., I have for the sake of brevity noted the variation simply as O. In the case of the Patmos MS., I was most courteously furnished with a complete transcript. For this my thanks were especially due to the Rev. George Williams, B.D., late Fellow of King’s College, and to the Metropolitan of Chios, who kindly troubled themselves in the matter. I cannot refrain from adding my own humble tribute of regret to that so widely felt, at Mr. Williams's death in January last. The cause of theological learning lost in him an indefatigable student, and the English Church a devoted son. v1 Preface. The Bibliography of the subject I had not entered upon when I published my earlier volume, and such notes as are given in the following pages are from the nature of the case fragmentary. Since the earlier sheets were printed off, I have received letters from Mr. Vanderhaeg- hen, the Librarian of the University of Ghent, and from the Rey. Léon M. Alishan, the Librarian of the Mechitha- rists at St. Lazare. These furnish information beyond what was previously known to me: the former with re- spect to editions of the Dutch version, the latter concern- ing MSS. of the Armenian version. This matter I have therefore been forced to embody as an addendum. Besides my indebtedness to Dr. Guidi and Mr. Wil- liams, without whose aid the collations could hardly have been attained when they were, I must cordially thank Mr. Vanderhaeghen and Mr. Alishan for the information noted below; also Dr. Paul, the Librarian of the Mechi- tharists at Vienna; Dr. Halm, the Librarian of the Royal Library at Munich; Mr. Campbell, the Librarian of the Royal Library at the Hague; Mr. Delisle, the Librarian of the National Library at Paris; Mr. A. J. V’rtatko, the Librarian of the National Museum at Prague; the Rev. A. H. Wratislaw, of Bury St. Edmunds; and Mr. E. Mag- nusson, of the Cambridge University Library. I must also return my best thanks to the Rev. 8.8. Lewis, Fellow and Librarian of Corpus Christi College, who has taken considerable trouble in investigations on my behalf in numerous foreign Libraries. TRINITY COLLEGE, Jan. 9th, 1879. ADDENDA. (I.) DUTCH VERSION. To those given on p. 18, add the following : (1) Place unspecified, 1540 (Vanderhaeghen, Bibliographie Gan- toise, i. 88). (2) Place unspecified, 1542 (2d.). (3) Ghend, Joos Lambrecht, 1551 (7d. i. 87). (4) aq 3 e 1552 (2b. vi. 11). (5) ie 1553 (2b. 1. 89). (6) Antwerp, haan Waesberghe, s.a. [privilege dated 1551], (2b. vi. 11). Mr. Vanderhaeghen mentions (i. 88) a Dutch MS. translation, dated 1437 a.p. It may be noted here that in the Van Damm sale catalogue (1764) occur no less than eight Dutch editions, the earliest being that of 1540 (Catalogue dune bibliothéeque in- comparable, Part 3, Nos. 2703—2710). (II.) FRENCH VERSION. To those already named, printed in Paris, we may add the follow- ing printed in the Low Countries: (1) Gand, Gerard Salenson, 1555 (Vanderhaeghen, vi. 18). (2) Fe ah Sau (0) The evidence for the latter is merely a citation in the inven- tory of the inquisitor P. Titelmans, and E aeay therefore be the same as the preceding. (I1I.) ARMENIAN VERSION. BrsrpEs the Vienna MS., described on p. 24, the following are to be cited—the first five occurring in Bibles, the sixth an inde- dependent MS. : (1) Library of Mechitharists at St. Lazare, Venice; cd. 1270, un- dated, but of the 14th century. vill Addenda. (7) Library of Lord de la Zouche, Parham Park. An Armenian Bible of the 14th century, containing the Testaments and the History of Joseph and Asenath. Mr. Alishan informs me that his own translation into Italian of this latter document was deposited with it. I may be allowed to add here that in the Archiepiscopal Library at Lambeth is an Armenian MS. Bible, which, however, is imperfect, nor do the Zestaments occur in it. There is, how- ever, contained therein an apocryphal document, which does not appear to be known in any other language, ‘‘ The seventh vision of the prophet Daniel, which treats of the Antichrist.” Mr. Alishan, to whom I owe the whole of the above details, states that while certainly later than the Armenian translation of the Bible in the fifth century, the actual date of the transla- tion of the Testaments is unknown. The Armenian Church has not admitted the Zestaments either into its Canon or its Ritual. Still it is regarded as a document worthy of much respect. John the Deacon, one of the most learned Doctors of the Armenian Church, who lived about the end of the 11th and the beginning of the 12th century, seems to have regarded it, if not canonical, at any rate worthy of being copied with the rest of Holy Scrip- ture. A Homily of unknown authorship, in a MS. dated 1224 A.D., cites the Testaments. Mr. Alishan informs me, as Dr. Paul had already done, that the Armenian version of the Testaments has never been printed. [Barocci 133], here noted as O. (3) The Roman MS., in the Vatican Library [Cod. Graec. 731]. For the description and collation of this MS. I am indebted to the kindness of Dr. Ignazio Guidi, of Rome; and my best thanks are due for much trouble taken in the matter, for which I had not the slightest claim. This MS. was long ago mentioned as one of those in the Vatican Library by Montfaucon (Bibliotheca Bublio- thecarum, p. 14), and some account of it with a few specimens of its readings was given by Dr. Vorstman in the Godgeleerde Bydragen for 1866 (pp. 953 sqq.): this, however, was unknown to me at the time that I edited the texts of the Cambridge and Oxford MSS. Dr. Vorstman mentions (p. 958) that a subscription in the MS. fixes the date to 1235 a.p. I learn, however, from Dr. Guidi that this is incorrect. The volume contains not only the Testaments, which do not begin till f. 97a, but also extracts from the Fathers. It is to one of these that the subscription is appended, on f. 93a: and the writing of this dated fragment is not the same as, though very similar to, the writing of the Testaments. This last may thus safely be assigned to the thirteenth century. It isa l oy The Greek MSS. R is clearly confused, and P has omitted this whole por- tion of the Testament. The same cause has also operated in the long sentence which has been omitted from C in L. 18, which is preserved for us inORP. Yet again through the same cause, a clause has been omitted in C at the beginning of Ju. 15, but is found in O R P (with some unimportant variations). One more instance of this kind may suffice. The clause éav pi) Ov auaptias ... Bace- Aelas in Ju. 21, omitted through homoeoteleuton in OC, is found in OR P. | A few examples may next be given of slight errors into which the copyist of C has drifted. In most of these cases the correction is obvious enough. In R. 1 (p. 130, ]. 2), the drs of C is certainly suspicious. It is omitted by OR P, which may give the correct text; but it is also quite possible that a whole clause has slipped out after kvptov, which none of the MSS. have preserved. In R. 6 (p. 133, 1. 20), the wer’ avtedv of C should certainly be corrected into the per’ avtov of OP; R, however, reads pet avtod. In 8.5 (p. 136, last line), ov« should certainly be inserted before état with OR P. In L. 9 (p. 143, 1. 1) the wera tov mwartépa of C should be altered into the peta tov matpos of ORP. In the same chapter (vb. 1. 10) the éreye, wn of C is given rightly as éXeyé wou in O R[P omits the word]. In Ju. 18 (p. 157, 1.10), the @e@ of C should probably be omitted with O, though RP omit the eod. In I. 1, by a mere blunder, the name of Jacob has been put in C for that of Reuben as the finder of the man- drakes. Here OR are correct: P omits the whole passage. The numerals at the beginning of the Test. Zeb. are, it will be seen, rather confused. The teocapaxooT@ kat Sexdtw of O is doubtless a mere slip for tecoapadexdre, in which case COP will agree; R, however, reads rerapTq. We should further correct the Af’ of C into #’, bringing The Greek MSS. 5 it into agreement with the dvo of OR; P omits the clause. In D. 4 (p. 171, 1. 16), 2) should be inserted before x- velobe with ORP; and in D. 5 (p. 172, 1. 4), the jdovny of C is obviously far less suitable than the pj of the other three MSS. Again (ib. 1. 11), the éx7ropevovtes of C is, one would think, an error for éxzopvevortes. The same, however, is read in RP; in O the whole passage is wanting. In G. 6 (p. 182, 1.3), C reads d0Awmdavijca. Here no variation of R is noted, P reads d0A0pwvijce (sic), and O omits the whole passage. Grabe conjectured that dorogovices should be read, but considering that the previous word is woAXaxkis, this is not at all likely. I would suggest simply doAofwrvyjcesr. In A. 4 (p. 185, 1. 4), the dzreipyov of C is doubtful; perhaps azeipyav would be an improvement. OR omit the clause, and the read- ing of P is quite different. In Jo..18 (p. 195, 1. 5), the €dovAEeuoe is certainly suspicious. It is, of course, possible to assume that dovrAev@ is used in a causal sense, like the parallel case of Bacirevm in the LXX.: of this, however, there is no direct evidence, and it is more probable that it is a mistake for édovAwoe, as given by R [xatedovAwcev] and P. The whole clause is omitted by O. In B. 3 (p. 197, ]. 11), the édenOnv of C is, of course, a mere slip for éde76n, as in OR P; and in B.5 (p. 198, 1.12), we of is equally a mistake for wer’ ov, as in R P (O omits the clause). In the above instances the variation has been one of minor moment, and the evidence at our disposal, com- bined with the requirements of the case, has, as a rule, sufficed to clear up the difficulty. There are some pas- sages, however, where the case is not so simple. Some- times, it is true, one or more of the later MSS. will point to a probable solution, though such results are to be accepted with caution; but in others a corruption of the text has taken place early, so that in the later MSS. we 6 The Greek MSS. find, if not mere hopeless reproductions of the error, a palpable cutting of the knot by bold omission of the clause, or alteration of a troublesome word. In §S. 6 (p. 137, 1. 12), the clause beginning 6tv xdpios .. . . seems clearly defective, as though a verb had dropped out. OP give us no light here, and R, though inserting é€er, gives by no means a probable text. In Ju. 7 (p. 151, 1.18), for the ai mores THv S00 Bactréwv of C, O reads Tads mods Bacirdéwv, R has Tads worews 6 Bactreds, and P, ‘Payads rodews Bacirdéws (sic). Here it cer- tainly seems to us that there are reasonable grounds for deserting the text of C, in favour of some form of the text which appears in varying forms in the three others. A curious instance is in Ju. 12 (p. 153, 1. 24): here we find in C O, éxaficev arrévavts (€vavts O) TH more. In R, however, is éxaOicev everday tH wore. Now in the account of the incident in Genesis xxxviil. 14, we find in the LXX., éxafice mpos tais midais Aivav (DIY ADD) ; and this view, which treats the Hebrew word as a proper name, is now pretty generally accepted. Hence it is not improbable that we should read év ’Evav 7H mode, and the reading of P, though corrupt, confirms this view, évvéa ava TH Tore exdOnce. The ending of éxa@cer, followed by ev twice repeated, would pave the way for the mistake. The te of évavts would easily arise from the following 77, and the amévavre of C is merely a further variation. In Z.9 (p. 169, 1.8), the text of C is certainly corrupt, “Iepovcad2 dvoua av’to. It is possible enough that the solution should be év ‘IepovaaAnp Sia TO dvopa avrov, as we find in OR P; but to our mind it looks suspiciously like a later patching up. In D. 4 (p. 171, 1.17), the eidéav of C is obscure. Here the andiav of O seems like an attempted improvement, and little help is got from R (aid/av) and P (atdeiav). A passage hopelessly The Greek MSS. i corrupt is found in N. 2 (p.175, 1.10), cat ov« éorw etrety 6Tt ev TO Evi TOIS TPOTwTTOLS 4) TAY Omoiwy, as read in C. Here O leaves out the passage altogether, and a still larger amount is omitted in P. R merely omits 4 tov ouoiwv, which does not touch the difficulty. It has been already said that there is a certain ten- dency visible in the later MSS. to emend, and not always for the better. Thus in 8. 8 (p. 137, 1. 12), we should consider the =u of C as certainly the true reading, fol- lowing on the mention of Xdu. Here, however, O R alter needlessly into onetov, and P leaves it out altogether. In L. 18 (p. 148, 1. 7), there is no reason why the otjoeu of C P should be altered into droornoe, asin OR. In Ju.5 (p. 150, 1. 23), the true reading ’Aperay of C [’ ABéra, P] has been stupidly altered into érépav in OR. In Jo. 20 (p. 195, 1. 25), C reads Zerpav tiv untépa vpov. Here unfortunately O P omit a large passage; but in R for Zedpav is read ’Acuve (sic). Here a copyist might easily have introduced Asenath as a correction for Zilpah, who had no special connection with Joseph, Bilhah having been Rachel’s handmaid ; but if Asenath had been the true reading, there seems no reason to account for its change into Zilpah, save the fact of the mention of her sister (cf. N.1) in the next clause. We have very little doubt therefore that Zilpah should be retained. Of the frequent cases of omission and abridgement which occur in the three later MSS., it is not necessary to give instances. It may, however, be remarked that one famous passage, attacked by recent critics as an interpola- tion (B. 11), wherein evident reference is made to St. Paul and to an existing New Testament Canon, is given with substantially the same text in COP. R, however, omits the greater part; and, as will be seen from the extract we have given, the Armenian version does the same. 8 The Latin Version. (II) THE LATIN VERSION. WE have seen that probably the Testaments were known to Tertullian, and further passages have been cited which give at any rate reasonable ground for assuming that our document was known to the early Western church. I have not succeeded, however, in finding the least trace of any old Latin version; all the Latin MSS., which are continually met with, being, so far as I have seen, copies of Grosseteste’s translation. This translation evidently be- came at once exceedingly popular. Almost on its first appearance in the thirteenth century it was largely quoted by Vincent of Beauvais, in his Speculum Historiale (Lib. 1., cc. 115 sqq.), numerous copies of it were soon spread over Europe, and, in course of time, translations into a large number of languages were made from it. There can, I think, be no reasonable doubt that it was from the Cambridge MS. this version was made, exhibiting as it does a very large amount of curious verbal coincidence with it. A few examples may suffice: quoniam for étt (R. 1; p. 130, 1. 2), the omission of the clause Kat xpv- mTeW Noyous (R. 2), the agreement in the error pet’ avTav for per’ avrov (R. 6), the omission of the negative (8.53 p- 136, 1. 28), the errors wera tov wartépa for p. TOD TaTpos and yy for wos (L. 9; p. 143, ll. 1,10), the rendering stare faciet (L. 18), the rendering civitates duorum regum (Ju. 7), the error Jacob for Reuben (I. 1), the agreement in the numerals (Z. 1), the rendering per asperos sinus for TpayoxorTnTov (Z. 4), the rendering wm vultuwm for the questionable eis eidéav (D. 4), the reproduction of the corrupt text in N. 2 (p. 175, 1.10), the error pe od for Het ov (B.5). As instances such as these may be repeated The Latin Version. 9 almost indefinitely, it is evident that the probability in the case is one amounting almost to certainty. I have already mentioned 31 MSS. of Grosseteste’s ver- sion, 16 of which I have examined. To the’ list previously given the following may now be added :— (32) Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. Again, the Testimonia XII. Patriarcharum de Christo consists of a series of pro- phetic extracts from the Testaments (Cd. 4230.6: Catal. iii. 565). With regard to the MS. Brevis expositio super Testamenta XII. Patriarcha- yum, once in the library of the Abbey of St. Germains (Cd. 559: Mont- faucon, p. 1132), but now in the Bibliothéque Nationale (Cd. 13586, Lat.), it is merely a short com- 10 The Latin Version. The Latin version has been repeatedly printed. We refer here briefly to a few of the earlier editions, where the Testaments have been published separately, not no- ticing those cases where they form part of a Bibliotheca Patrum. (1) That which is presumably the editio princeps bears neither date (but probably c. 1510—1520 A.D.), printer's name or place of printing. It is a quarto of 24 leaves, 38 lines to a page, in Gothic characters (except the printer’s address to the reader on the reverse of the title page, which is in Roman type), with signatures (A—F"*). The title page, which is in large woodcut letters, surrounded with a grotesque woodcut border, runs thus :— Testamé|ta duodecim | Patriarchari | filiorum Jacob. | e greco in latint | versa Roberto | Linconiensi | Episcopo | inter- pre|te. This edition is strangely inaccurate, and as all subse- quent ones have been copied from it (modified only so far as Grabe in the second edition of his Spicilegium corrected the text by two Latin MSS. in the Library of Trinity College, Cambridge), a very large number of errors still remain. Fabricius (Cod. Pseud. Vet. Test., Vol.i. p.'758, ed. 2) mentions an edition of 1483. I can find no trace of any such edition, and, taking into account the exceeding inaccuracy of the whole paragraph in Fabricius, I think there can be no doubt that the date is a conjectural one for the present edition.’ mentary on Jacob’s blessings. There was a MS. of the Testaments in the Library at Clermont (Cd. 90: Mont- faucon, p. 1264). As to this, M. Delisle, the Director of the Bzblio- theque Nationale, kindly informs me that it has not come into the posses- It is somewhat rare: copies sion of that Library, and that he is ignorant of what has become of it. It is not mentioned in the Catalogue of the MSS. now preserved at Cler- mont, whick was published in 1839. 1 For a possible solution of the difficulty, see below, p. 16, n. THE ENGLISH VERSIONS. NOWHERE does this curious farrago appear to have been more popular than in England, the country to which, through Grosseteste’s Latin version, is due its wide spread through the West. At least three independent transla- tions exist, one from the Latin, the others from the Greek.’ | (1) The translation from the Latin first appeared in 1577, and was constantly reprinted, especially in the seventeenth century. The first edition is of great rarity: there is no copy in the British Museum, and I have failed hitherto to find one in any library. Copies were sold at Inglis’s (665) and at Heber’s sale (part 1, 6673), but I 1 For Menrad Molther and for a_ tells us of John Pulleyne, a senior list of his works, see Adelung u. The title page of the second edition of 1581, a copy of which is in the British Museum, runs thus :— The Testamentes of the Twelue | Patriarches, the Sonnes of Jacob: tran-|slated out of Greeke into Latine by Robert | Grosthed, sometime Bishop of Lincolne, | and out of hys copy into French and | Dutch by others: Now eng-|lished by A.G. | To the credit whereof an auncient Greeke copye | written in parchment, is kept in the Vni-| uersity Library of Cambridge. | [Here follows a rude woodcut of Jacob in bed, with his twelve sons standing around him.] At London| Printed by John Daye, dwell- ing | ouer Aldersgate. 1581. | Cum priuilegio Regiz| Maiestatis. | The translator, A. G., has been commonly supposed to be Arthur Golding (for an account of whom see Cooper's Athenae Cantabrigienses, ii. 431), to whose prolific pen very many translations in the sixteenth century are due. The catalogue of the British Museum, with much less likelihood, explains it of Antony Gilby (for whom see op. cit. 1. 516), whose numerous extant writings are mainly dogmatic and exegetical. To the translation is prefixed an address “To the Christian Reader,’ by Richard Day, the son of the printer John Day (see op. cit. ii. 476). I have noted the following editions, some of which are in the British Museum, some in my own possession, and some are cited from Lowndes and similar sources, which need not, however, be given here at length :— London, 1577, 1581, 1589, 1601, 1610, 1638, 1647, 1660, 1663, 1670, 1671, 1674, 1677, 1679, 1681, 1684, 1686, 1690, 1693, 1699, 1706, 1716, 1731, 1837. Place unascertained, but probably mostly London, 1590, 1595, 1606, 1619, 1683, 1700, 1787. It may be mentioned here that the curious sect of the Muggletonians, even now not extinct in England, receive the Testaments of the XII. Patriarchs as inspired, to- gether with the Old and New Testaments, the book of Enoch, and the works of Reeve and Muggleton. Hand- somely-bound copies of all these, together with the less highly-regarded works of Tomkinson and Saddington, were presented by the Muggletonians to the British Museum on the 14th November, 1836, the edition of the Testaments of the XII. Gordon, M.A.,? of Norwich. A few words may be bestowed on the curious wood- 1 This date is that of one of the trea- tises of which the volume is made up. As the work is neither in the British Museum Catalogue nor in Lowndes, I subjoin the title page at length:— ““The History of the worthy martyr John Bradford (who was born in Manchester). As regards the former, the earlier editions which I have been able to inspect, from that of 1581 onwards, give Jacob propped up in bed, with his children standing around him. This was subsequently changed into a frontispiece of figures dancing (first appearing, so far as I have observed, in 1674), and this again, in 1693, into a bathing scene. From 1699 onwards, in all the editions I possess or have inspected, the frontispiece of the danc- ing figures is resumed, and is found as late as 1731.1 The two last-mentioned frontispieces are, curiously enough, taken from the first edition of the English trans- lation of Boccaccio’s Decameron (1620-25), where they belong to a set of six, which figure on the title page and throughout the volume. The frontispieces to the several Testaments are found in the edition of 1581, and presumably therefore in that of 1577, which was due to the same printer. These same pictures are found, though on a slightly smaller scale, in the Dutch, or rather Flemish, edition printed at Ypres in 1551, which is described below. Whether they are capable of being traced still further back, I am unable to say. (2) A translation was made directly from the Greek (from the text of Grabe and Fabricius) by W. Whiston, in his Collection of Authentick Records, belonging to the Old and New Testament. Vol.i., pp. 294 sqq. London, 1727. THERE are at least two translations in French, due re- spectively to the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, both taken from the Latin. (1) Les Testamens des douze Patriarches Enfans de Jacob. Paris, par Jaques Bogard, 1548 | Heber’s Catalogue; Part ix. 2841]. An edition is also mentioned by Brunet (s.v. Robertus Lincolniensis), Paris, 1555. (2) Les douze Testamens des Patriarches, traduits de |’ He- breu en Gree, et du Grec en Latin, par Robert, Evéque de Lincolne, et du Latin en Francois, avec une dissertation, des argumens et des notes, par Monsieur Macé, chefcier, curé de sainte Oportune, 4 Paris mpccxi1r. chez Jean de Nully, Libraire, rue 8. Jacques, 4 l’Image de S. Pierre. 16 The German Versions. A second edition of the above appeared in 1743, and Macé’s work has also been reprinted entire in Migne’s Encyclopédie Théologique, vol. xxiii. | Dict. des Apocryphes, vol. i.], coll. 854 sqq. (VI) THE GERMAN VERSIONS. In Germany the Testaments have evidently been very popular, as may be inferred from the number of editions mentioned below. Whether the sixteenth and seventeenth century editions represent more than one independent trans- lation I am unable to say; probably they do not. Among the more modern editions, however, there are at least two distinct translations. Dr. Karl Halm, the Director of the Hof-wnd Staats- Bibliothek at Munich, kindly gives me a note of the first five of the following list as those of which there are copies in that Library. (1) Das testament der zwolf Patriarchen der siinen Jacobs. ... . Ausz dem getruckten Menradi Moltheri! vnd Au- _ gustini Lantzkroni 113 Jar alt vertolmetscht..... At the end, Getruckt zu Basel by Lux” Schonber. Anno. 1539. 1 For Menrad Molther, see p. 11, n.: of Augustine Lantzkron I have not succeeded in finding any trace. The number 113 is perplexing when given as the age of Menrad Molther’s printed text in 1539. This number is reproduced without change in some at any rate of the following editions ; and in (7) and possibly in others is printed in words. What the correction should be I cannot say. It may be worth noting here, with reference to the date 1483 given by Fabricius for the first edition of the Latin (supra, p- 10), that he may have been led to that particular date by the title-page of the edition of 1596 [No. 4, infra], which is one of those which he men- tions, the reckoning back from which of 113 gives 1483. 2 This is apparently a Swiss abbre- viation for Lucas, The German Versions. 7 (2) Testament vnd abschrifft der zwolff Patriarchen, der Sunen Jacobs. ... A copy of this last edition is in the Library of the University of Leipsic. It bears on its title-page the date 1544, but there can be no doubt whatever that this is not really the date of the printing of the work, but is merely that on the title-page of the edition from which it is copied. This follows from the fact that it forms the second part of a book of which the first part bears the date 1664; and that the two works were printed at the same time is undoubted from the identity of the type and setting up of the book, even to the floriated border (see e.g. f. 2* in each case). The title of the first work runs, Geistliche Schopffung und Reise desz wahren Israels ausz Agypten durch die Wiiste in das selobte. lands 2 ait. Franckfurt am Mayn. HERE too we find a considerable number of editions, all however, so far as I have observed, being of the same translation. For a knowledge of the greater part of those mentioned below, I am indebted to the kindness of Mr. Campbell, the Librarian of the Royal Library at the Hague. The Dutch and Flemish Versions. 19 This edition is specially interesting as being, so far as is yet known, the first book printed at Ypres; and as the only copy at present known to exist is in my own posses- sion, I add a brief account of it. It may be noted here that the earliest book hitherto known of Joos Destres, the introducer of printing into Ypres, was of the year 1556 (see the Dictionnarre de Géographique appended to Bru- net’s Manuel du Inbravvre, s.v. Ipra). The title-page runs, (i Dye. | Testamen-|ten der. xii. Patriarcken | Jacobs kin- deren. OF the date and authorship of the Icelandic version I have not succeeded in ascertaining anything. Mr. E. Magntsson, who kindly called my attention to the second of the two following MSS., informs me that several other copies exist in Copenhagen (as in the collection of Arnas Magnaeus in the Library of the University of Copen- hagen) and elsewhere. Of these, however, I have not as yet obtained any details. This translation does not appear to have been ever printed. (1) British Museum [Add. MSS. 11068]. THE BOHEMIAN VERSION. THE Bohemian version can claim to be the first of the translations from the Latin, having been made long before the invention of printing. It is referred to by Thomas Stitny about the year 1376 A.D., which enables us to approximate to the date of the translation (Dobrowsky, Gesch. der Bohmischen Sprache, p. 177). 22 . The Bohemian Version. Of this translation several MSS. still exist :— (1) At Lipnik in Moravia, in the Library of the Piarists. (2) At Breslau, in the Library of the Dominicans at St. Adalbert, dated 1491 a.p. To this is prefixed the history of Joseph. (3) In the Library of the University at Prague [xvii.B. 15, No. 6], dated 1465 a.p. This translation has been several times printed :— (1) Testament anebo Ksafft 12 Patryarchu, synu Jakobo- wych .... w Prostegowe, 1545, ‘‘during the government of the lord of Pernstein.”” 12mo. ‘ (2) Zbid., 1548: printed by Jan Giinther, at the cost of Mateg [7.e. George] Melantrych of Aventin, 1570: in 8vo. To this the history of Asenath is annexed. Of all editions, each doubtless consisting of a fair number of copies, the only relics are two solitary copies, each of a different edition, with the title-page wanting in both. One is in the Library of the National Museum at Prague, among the collection of publications .of Bartolome} Netholicky (P 5 F30), and the other is in the Library of the University of Prague. I understand that there is no modern reprint. It may seem strange that a book which evidently had a considerable popularity in the country, should thus almost have disappeared. The explanation is to be found in the fact of the unsparing warfare waged against the native literature by the Romish priests. I have been in- formed that a certain Jesuit priest, who died in the last The Armenian Version. 23 century, boasted on his death-bed that he had burnt sixty thousand volumes of Bohemian books with his own hand. My information concerning the Bohemian version of the Testaments is derived from Dobrowsky (op. cit. ; ed. Prag, 1818), and Jungmann, Historie Literatury Ceské, p. 58; ed. Prague, 1825. I have also to thank the Rev. A. H. Wratislaw of Bury St. Edmunds, and Mr. A. J. Vrt’atko, Chief Librarian of the National Museum at Prague, for help kindly given in the matter. Some further infor- mation on the subject will be found in a paper on the story of Asenath contributed by the latter gentleman to the Casopis Musea for 1862, pp. 64 sqq. (XL) THE ARMENIAN VERSION. DEAN Stanley states (Hastern Church, p. 8) that the Testaments of the XII. Patriarchs and the History of Joseph and Asenath form part of the canonical Scriptures of the Armenian Church. This statement is derived from Curzon’s Armenia (p. 225), who, however, it must be allowed, does not use the word canonical, but merely says, “Among the Armenians the Holy Scriptures contain more books than those of the Western Churches,” after which the two books in question are specified. That the whole thing, however, is a mistake, is shown by the Rev. S. C. Malan (Philosophy or Truth, p. 176), who cites a letter he had received from Constantinople, ~ the writer of which mentions that the Armenian Patriarch there had stated that the works in question were not regarded as canonical by the Armenian Church, and that he had seen them in MS., but that they had never been printed. 24 The Armenian Version. The existence then of an Armenian version being proved, I endeavoured to ascertain some particulars re- specting it, and I have to thank Mr. Malan and the Rev. C. G. Curtis, of Constantinople, for their kindness in the matter. I at last found that there was a MS. of the ver- sion in the Library of the Mechitharists at Vienna, and to Dr. P. Paul, the learned Librarian of the Society, my best thanks are due for the kindness with which he at once furnished me with a description of the MS., and gave me a literal translation of two extracts which I specified. He too states that, to the best of his knowledge, this version of the Testaments had never been printed, also adding, “it 1s not a part of the Armenian Canon.” As to the date when the translation was made, I have no evidence at all forthcoming, save that Dr. Paul speaks of the ‘correctness’ of its style, while the epilogue due to the copyist of the Vienna MS. is ‘ unclassical.’ The version is beyond doubt, so I am informed, a translation from the Greek, although in many places (at least so far as the present MS. is concerned) it is not altogether in agreement with the Greek text; and there occurs also occasionally not a trifling amount of abridgment. The MS. in the Library of the Mechitharists at Vienna (Cd. Arm. 88) is perfect and in good condition, written in a very legible hand, and dated the year of the Armenians 837, that is 1388 A.D. More than half of the volume con- sists of (1) the history of the life of the patriarch Joseph, partly according to the biblical account and partly made up with many apocryphal additions: (2) the apocryphal history of the life and conversion of Asenath to the religion of the true God, and also her marriage with Joseph. The second half of the volume contains the Testaments of the Sons of Jacob. It is to be remarked that, in the present MS., the Testaments of Reuben, Naphtali, and The Armenian Version. 25 Gad are absent. The Testaments of the remaining nine Patriarchs come in the following order :— (1) The Testament of Simeon,! the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham. (2) The\Testament of Levi, concerning the priesthood. (3) The Testament of Joseph, concerning envy. (4) The Testament of Benjamin, and the twelfth (s7c). (5) The Testament of Judah, concerning righteousness and avarice and fomnication. (6) The Testamentiof Issachar. (7) The Testament of Zabulon. (8) The Testament of Gad, concerning contemplation.” -(9) The Testament of Aser, concerning the two aspects® and virtue. In the MS. immediately after the end of the ninth and last Testament, the copyist of the book has written in unclassical language, and in verse, a sort of epilogue in praise of the Patriarchs or of the author of the Testa- ments. At the end the writer appends the time and place of writing. Besides the above description of the MS., Dr. Paul kindly furnished me with a literal German translation (aus dem Armenischen ins Deutsche Wort fiir Wort tiber- setzt) of Judah cc. 24—26 (p. 159), and of Benjamin cc. 10—12 (p. 200, 1. 25, kal kpivet xvpos . . .). I have here thought it better to print the German exactly as it stood, as since my object in asking for these extracts was to afford means of judging therefrom of the character of the 1 In the case of Simeon and of ung, betrachtung), but in no sense some of the other Patriarchs, it will can it be equivalent to the uisos of be observed that no special headings the Greek here. of the contents are given, as in the 3 Doppelheit, zwei Gestalten.
