POWER, ....1880 CONFESSION OF FAITH AND COVENANT. [From Manuals of May, 1820, and January 1, 1834.] CONFESSION OF FAITH. We believe that there is one God, self-existent, eternal, infinitely perfect and glorious, unchangeable in His being and perfections ; the Creator and owner of all things, and the Sovereign of the Universe. That this one God subsists, in a manner at present mysterious to us, as Father, Son and Holy Ghost, three in one and one in three. That God has revealed His will to mankind in the Bible, which was given by His inspiration, and which is the only sufficient and unerring rule of faith and practice. That God created our first parents in His own im- age, perfectly holy and happy ; but that in conse- quence of their sin, all their posterity are born with corrupt or depraved hearts, so that they become sinful and exposed to the wrath of God forever. That God of His own sovereign grace has devised a scheme for our redemption, by which the exercise of mercy is made consistent with the maintenance of justice, and with the honor of His government. 8 Confession of Faith. That the Son of God, the eternal Word, was made flesh, or became man, and by His death upon the cross, is the propitiation for the sins of the world, and that He arose from the dead and is seated at the right hand of God the Father, being invested with all power in heaven and on earth. That every one who believes in the name of Jesus Christ, or who receives Him as He is offered in the Gospel, is pardoned and restored to the favor of God, however numerous and great may have been his sins. That all who truly believe in Jesus Christ are enti- tled to everlasting life, and will assuredly, according to the divine promise, be kept through faith and holiness unto salvation. That man is so depraved that he will not repent and believe in Jesus Christ, unless by the Spirit of God a new heart is given him, a heart to love the Lord his God supremely. That no sinner by anything which he does, lays God under any obligation to grant him His regenerating grace ; but that God bestows this gift in a free and sovereign manner, having mercy on whom He will have mercy. That believers though delivered from the curse are bound to yield a perfect obedience to the divine law, and are therefore sinful in all the defects of their holy exercises. That Jesus Christ has a Church in the world, and that among His institutions He has appointed Baptism and the Lord's Supper, to be received by all who cor- dially believe in Him and make profession of their faith, and that the infant children of such are proper subjects of baptism. The Covenant. 9 That there is appointed a day of judgment, at which period Jesus Christ will raise the dead and judge the world, and will doom the wicked to everlasting de- struction, and receive the redeemed to the happiness and glorv of His eternal kingdom. THE COVENANT. As we consider ourselves to be under great and in- dispensable obligations to confess Jesus Christ before men, and to unite with His visible Church on earth, we do now enter into covenant with this Church ; we do renounce all the ways of sin, and publicly and sol- emnly devote ourselves to the Lord our God, taking His word to be our rule of faith and practice, receiv- ing the Lord Jesus Christ as our teacher and Saviour, and relying for sanctitication upon the influences of the Holy Spirit. We promise to attend constantly upon the institu- tions of the Gospel ; to maintain family and secret prayer; to present our children for baptism, and to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord ; to commemorate, as we have opportunity, the death of our Saviour in the Supper ; to assemble for the worship of God on the Lord's day ; to ke£p the Sabbath holy, and to maintain and submit to the dis- cipline of Christ's house, according to the rules of His word. And we finally promise, diligently to promote the interests of the religion of Christ our Lord, and par- ticularly to recommend it to others by presenting in 10 Declaration of Admission. our own lives an example of justice, temperance, be- neficence, and Godliness. Relying on the aids of the Divine Spirit, we do now make these solemn engagements in the presence of God, of angels and of this congregation. DECLARATION OF ADMISSION. "We, then, the Church of Christ, do receive you into full communion, promising to conduct towards you as becometh saints, and to watch over you with Christian affection, praying God that both you and we may be at last presented faultless before the pres- ence of His glory with exceeding joy. Amen. CONFESSION OF FAITH COVENANT. {The same as published in the Manuals of July, 1848, and July, 1870.] CONFESSION OF FAITH. We believe there is but one God, the Creator, Pre- server, and Governor of the Universe ; a Being self - existent, independent and immutable ; infinite in pow- er, knowledge, wisdom, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth. We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament were given by inspiration of God ; that they contain a complete and harmonious system of divine truth ; and are the only and sufficient rule of doctrinal belief and religious practice. We believe that God is revealed in the Scriptures as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost ; and that this distinction is perfectly consistent with the unity of the Godhead, and that these three are one, and in all divine attributes, equal. We believe that God made all things for Himself ; that known unto Him are all His works from the be- ginning ; that He governs all things according to the counsel of His own will ; and that the principles and 12 Confession of Faith. administration of His government are perfectly wise, holy, just and good. We believe that oar first parents were created holy — in the image of God ; that they fell from this state of holiness by voluntarily transgressing the divine command; and that in consequence of their apostacy from God, the heart of man, until renewed by grace, is- destitute of holiness, and alienated from God. We believe that Christ, as God manifest in the flesh, became the one Mediator between God and man ; that by His obedience, sufferings and death, He has made a proper and adequate atonement for sin ; that He is the only Redeemer of sinners; and that who- mever will, may be saved ; yet that such is the aver- sion of men to holiness, that all men will refuse to come to Christ, unless God, by the special influences of His Spirit, draw them. We believe that those who are saved, were chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world, that they should be holy and without blame before Him in love ; that they are saved, not by works of righteous- ness which they have done, but through the sovereign mercy of God, by regeneration, repentance, and faith in Jesus Christ ; and that those who are born of God arc justified freely by His grace through the redemp- tion that is in Jesus Christ, and are kept by the power of God, through faith, unto eternal life. We believe that there will be a general resurrection of the bodies, both of the just and unjust ; that all mankind must one day stand before the judgment-seat of Christ, to receive a just and final sentence of retri- bution according to the deeds clone here in the body ; The Covenant. 13 and that the reward bestowed on the righteous, and the punishment inflicted on the wicked, will be, alike, eternal. Moreover, we believe that in this world the Lord Jesus Christ has a visible Church ; that the terms of membership are a credible profession of faith in Christ, and of that holiness which is wrought by the renewing grace of God ; that none but members of the visible church, in regular standing, have a right to partake of the Lord's Supper ; and that only believers and their households, can be admitted to the ordinance of Baptism. THE COVENANT. In the presence of God, His holy angels, and this assembly, you now solemnly avouch the Lord Jeho- vah, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, to be your God, the supreme object of your affections, and your por- tion for ever. You now cordially acknowledge the Lord Jesus Christ, in all his mediatorial offices, Prophet, Priest and King, as your only Savior and final Judge ; and the Holy Ghost as your Sanctifier, Comforter and Guide. You humbly and cheerfully devote yourselves to God, in the everlasting covenant of His grace ; and you consecrate all your powers and faculties to His service and glory ; and you promise, that through the assistance of His Spirit, you will cleave to Him as your chief good ; that you will give diligent attend- ance to His word and ordinances ; that you will seek the honor and interest ,of His kingdom ; and that, 14 The Covenant. henceforth, denying all ungodliness, and every worldly lust, yon will live soberly, righteously, and godly in the world. You do now cordially join yourselves to this, as a Church of Christ, engaging to submit to the rules of its government and discipline ; to strive earnestly for its peace, edification and purity, and to walk with its members in charity, faithfulness, circumspection, meekness and sobriety. We then affectionately receive you, as a member of the visible Church of Christ, in full communion, and entitled to all its privileges. We welcome you to this fellowship with. us in the blessings of the Gospel, and on our part engage to watch over you and seek your edification, as long as you shall continue among us. Should you have occasion to remove, it will be your duty to seek, and ours to grant, a recommendation to another Church; for hereafter, you can never with- draw from the watch and communion of the saints without a breach of covenant. And now, beloved in the Lord, let it be impressed on your minds, that you have come under solemn ob- ligations, from which you can never escape. Wher- ever you go, these vows will be upon you. They will follow you to the bar of God ; and in whatever world you maybe fixed, they will abide upon you to eternity. You can never again be as you have been. You have unalterably committed yourselves, and henceforth you must be the servants of God. Hereafter the eyes of the world will be upon you ; and as you demean yourselves, so religion will be hon- ored or disgraced. If you walk worthy of your pro- The Covenant. 15 fession, you will be a credit and a comfort to us, but if otherwise, it will be au occasion of grief and re- proach. But; beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. May the Lord guide and preserve you till death, and at last receive you and us to that blessed world where our love and joy shall be forever perfect. Amen. At the annual meeting of the Church, held Decem- ber 15, 1880, the following minute was adopted : We, as a Church, do hereby reaffirm the foregoing Articles as sufficiently indicating our doctrinal posi- tion. We expect all officers to give an intelligent as- sent to them. We regard the essential qualifications for member- ship in any Christian Church, however, to be, Repent- ance toward God and Faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. While we are not allowed to receive any who lack these essential qualifications, we desire to exclude none who possess them, and who, knowing our Doctrinal position and our Polity, are willing to co-operate with us in advancing the Redeemer's kingdom. ORDER OF SERVICE FOB ADMISSION OF MEMBERS. Adopted Dec. 15, 1880. SERVICE OF ADMISSION. (The names of those persons publicly confessing Christ and entering into covenant with this Church, having been already propounded and by vote of the Church accepted, shall be read by the minister, and they shall rise before the Church and congregation, there be- ing sung at the same time the following words, or others chosen by the officiating minister : Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind, Sight, riches, healing of the mind, Yea r all I need, in Thee to find. And He taketh notice of it, to the high praise and commendation of the Church in Pergamos, that they held fast His name, and had not denied His faith. We find how ready the Apos- tle was to make a confession of his faith, though for that hope's sake he was accused and put in chains. What hours of temptation may overtake you, is not for us to say. Only the Lord doth many times so order things that, when his people have made a good confes- sion, they should be put upon the trial, one way or an- other, to see whether they have been sincere in what they have done. The Lord grant that your mind (minds) may be so girt about with truth that you may b© able to stand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand. CONFESSION. (The Church then being seated, but the candidates still standing, the minister shall say to such as have been baptized:) Do you here in the presence of God and of this congregation renew the solemn promise and vow that was made in your name at your baptism, ratifying and confirming the same in your own persons. (To such as have not been baptized the minister shall say:) Do you desire to be baptized, and do you purpose obediently to keep God's holy will and commandments and to walk in the same all the days of your life ?
