LONDON: SAMUEL BAGSTER AND SONS, 15, PATERNOSTER-EOW : AND WERTHEIM AND MACINTOSH. YORK: J. ALLOM. J852. PEEFACE The value, to the devotional student of the Holy Scriptures, of reference to parallel illustrative passages in the same Sacred Writings, has been generally acknowledged by those who have adopted tliis scriptural method of study. By thus " comparing spiritual things with spiritual," under the supplicated teaching of the Holy Spirit of promise, we may tnist to be made " perfect and complete in all the will of God," and that " the word of Christ will dwell in us richly in all wisdom." Important aid in this profitable and interesting employment has been afforded by the addition to our Bibles of " Marginal References." The number of these in the first edition of the present authorized version of the English Bible, issued in 1611, was 9,000. They were increased in subse- quent editions; and ultimately extended, by Dr. Blaj-ney, in 1769, to 61,983, which is the number in the Bibles now printed by Royal authority, and circulated by the Christian Knowledge Society, and by the British and Foreign, and Trinitarian Bible Societies. A large proportion of these references being of a merely verbal and critical character, and chiefly therefore valuable to the translator and scholar, many improved and original selections have since been made. That contained in the Polyglot Bible, published by those zealous and enterprising promoters of sound BibUcal literatm-e, Messrs. Samuel Bagster and Sons, comprises 60,000 references. In other works, more comprehensive prin- ciples of selection have been applied, and the number of references has been greatly increased. The " Treasui7 of Scripture Knowledge," also published by Messrs. Bagster, contains half a mUlion, and embraces, among others, the laborious compilation of the Rev. Thomas Scott, which occupied seven years of the venerable Commentator's life. The value of this mode of illustrating and enforcing Scriptm-e truth has been attested by Christians of every rank, from the learned controversial theologian. Bishop Horslcy, to the converted Negro of Sierra Leone, who eagerly expends his 8s. 6d. in the purchase of a Bible with marginal references, which, to use his own simple language, " talks by the side." Mr. Scott, in the preface to his Commentai-y, pronounces the use of references to be " one of the best helps for fixing the word of God in the memoij, leading the mind to a just interpretation of it, and in many cases rendering it most affecting to the heart." He adds, that '• it tends powerfully to counteract all sceptical doubts, when eveij part of Scripture is thus found to support, and to receive support from the rest." His references are both verbal, to fix the meaning, and expository, "to imfold the doctrine or promise in the text, and to establish a Scriptural interpretation." Some passages are adduced by way of instructive contrast ; others shew how language used of Jehovah, or of Jesus alone, applies to both. The compiler of the following pages has been in the habit, for some time past, of studying various parts of the Bible in connection with the parallel passages referred to in one or other of the two extensive collections alluded to above. He has also made a practice of putting into writing short extracts from some of the passages referred to, as a means of presening the results of his examinations, and of abridgmg his labour on future occasions. Having experienced the value and usefulness of such a Textual Commentaij in various ways, he became desirous of opening a part of this "Trcasuiy of Scripture knowledge" to Bible Chiustians in general. A selection from his %, . IV Eeferences and Prayers on the successive chapters of the Book of Genesis, accompanied by some of the preceding introductoiy matter, was contributed by him two yeai-s ago, to the Chm-ch of England Sunday School Quarterly IMagazine. It appeared in the tenth number of that Periodical, in the fonn of " Suggestions for the study of the Scriptures, either in a Bible Class or in Family Worship." He has since been encouraged to give greater publicity to his plan, by putting into print his series of Suggestive References on a favourite devotional part of the Sacred voliime. He trusts that those who have been deterred from availing themselves of the columns of Bagster and Scott, by the mass of minute and unsuggestive figures which they present, or who have been disappointed by the number of merely verbal repetitions to which they relate, will here be assisted and encom-aged in then- Scripture studies. Those, on the other hand, who are jealous of the use of any external helps, and who derive their chief profit and pleasure from independent research, may still be happy to avail themselves of the supplemental aid which this volume affords, and particularly when time does not admit of more lengthened investigation. The number of references in the following pages is upwards of 10,000, being probably about one-third of the whole number examined. There are 2,461 verses in the Book' of Psalms, and perhaps 5,000 references upon them in om- common Bibles. The compiler has repeatedly found that the most striking parallels are not included in these. The quotations are taken from any part of the verse or passage cited, and are such as appeared either the most suggestive of the whole to the memoiy, or the most illustrative in themselves ; avoiding needless repetitions of the words of the primary clause. If the passages refen-ed to do not always throw new light upon the subject, yet they may present the same tnith in more striking or beautiful language, or may supply a greater vaiiety of expression for subsequent prayer. The passages illustrating each clause of a verse ai'e always grouped together, but it has been judged unnecessary to distinguish tj'pogi-aphically the commence- ments of the clauses. The omission of a single word is usually indicated by a hyphen, and of more than one by a dash. The reader is thus preserved from being misled in his recollection. The same references ai-e repeated as often as necessaiy, so as to prevent the inconvenience of tm-ning to another part of the book. When, however, a reference recurs in the same Psalm, or is made to another and not far distant one, it is sometimes inserted in figures only, at the end of a line. No analysis of the subjects of the Psalms has here been attempted. A digest, of this kind, of passages of sufficient length to form a Reading, will be found in the Author's "Index to Scripture Readings; " and a similar arrangement of the most profitable single verses is contained in his " Texts of Scripture Arranged," &c. The Author cannot but humbly and thankfully acknowledge, at the close of this interesting labour, his infinite obligations to that Grace which has suffered any rays of Divine Light and Truth to animate and illumine his own soul, and which has permitted and enabled him thus to concentrate a few of their bright and glorious beams for the enlightening and consolation of other minds. May it please that God who is its author and its end, that Saviour who is its theme from fii'st to last, and that Holy Spirit, who is its inspu-er and interpreter to man, — to bless still more and more the precious volume of Jehovah's revealed will ; — to tune the heai-ts of the redeemed in every land to David's lyre, in singing David's songs; — and, in infinite condescension to human ignorance and infirmity, to grant, that this humble attempt to exhibit Scripture truth in Scripture light may be a means of conviction and instruction, of comfort and edification, of faith and hope, of peace and joy, to many, many, souls.
