And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. 19. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day. FIFTH DAY. 20. And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open expanse of heaven. 21. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind; and God saw that it was good. 22. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. 23. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day. SIXTH DAY. 24. And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind; and it was so. 25. And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind; and God saw that it was good. 26. And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our like- ness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27. So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them. PSALM 1. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the wicked, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scorn- ful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in His law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The wicked are not so; but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the wicked shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the just. For the Lord knoweth the way of the just; but the way of the wicked shall perish. 4. PSALM 23. The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of justice for His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. For Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. SCRIPTURE RECITATIONS. 29 3. PSALM 1. THE LORD'S PRAYER. Our Father, who art in the heavens, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven so upon the earth. Give us this da5' our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever, Amen. Matthew 6: 9-13. 6. THE TWO GREAT COMMANDMENTS. Hear, O Israel; the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first and great commandment; and the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Mark 12: 29, 30. Matthew 22: 38-40. 7. THE TEN BLESSINGS. Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers; for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are perse- cuted for the sake of righteousness; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad; for great is your reward in heaven; for so perse- cuted they the prophets which were before you. Matthew 5: 3-12. SCRIPTURE RECITATIONS. 3 1 5. THE LORD'S PRAYER. Matthew 3: 3-12. 32 SCRIPTURE RECITATIONS. 8. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name; which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John i: 1-5; 9-14. 9. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia; for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give glory to Him; for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and His wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white; for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And He saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. Revelation 19: 6-9. 10. And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away. Light of life, etc. Thou who in a manger Once hast lowly lain, Who dost now in glory O'er all kingdoms reign, Gather in the Gentiles Who in lands afar, Ne'er have seen the brightness Of Thy guiding star. Light of life, etc. Onward through the darkness Of the lonely night, Shining still before them With Thy kindly light, Guide them, alien kindred, Homeward from afar, Young and old together, By Thy guiding star. Light of life, etc. Until every nation, Whether bond or free, 'Neath Thy starlit banner, Lord, doth follow Thee O'er the distant mountains To that heavenly home, Where no sin nor sorrow Evermore shall come. Light of life, etc. 120 HYMNS. 42 ¥ fttt Q fw. Mu N j - * l — ^^ fv fl f * r^ r» p i I o * # * - Im " i i i • o w & 1 1 II i WJ «4- J 1 __J » ,• ! __... 1 L L i j i / r 1 | ^ r i 1. His the sceptre, His the throne; Alleluia! Alleluia! His the victory alone. Hark! angelic songs of triumph Thunder far across the main; Mighty echoes, all creation Sending back the glad refrain. Liturgy 95. Angels, from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o'er all the earth; Tell, O tell the wondrous story, Loud proclaim Messiah's birth. Come and worship, come and worship, Worship ye the Lord our King. Shepherds, in the field abiding, Watching o'er your flocks by night; Angel hosts to you confiding, Yonder shines the hallowed light. Come and worship, etc. Sages, leave your contemplations, Brighter visions beam afar; Seek the great Desire of nations, Follow ye His natal star. Come and worship, etc. Watchers, at the altar bending, Waiting long in hope and fear; Lo! the Lord of life descending, In His temple doth appear. Come and worship, etc. Liturgy 133. 1 Praise the Lord! ye heavens, adore Him! Praise Him, angels, in the height; Sun and moon, rejoice before Him; Praise Him, all ye stars of light. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Earth and heaven, your songs unite. 2 Praise the Lord! for He is glorious! He hath put our foes to shame; Over death and hell victorious, Hosts on high His power proclaim. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Praise and magnify His Name. Liturgy 2Q. 194 HYMNS. 117 i Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And heaven and nature sing. 2 Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns! Let men their songs employ; While fields, and floods, rocks, hills, and plains, Repeat the sounding joy. 3 No more shall sin and sorrow grow, And thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow To earth's remotest bound. 4 He rules the earth with truth and grace; And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love. Liturgy 123. 118 1 Jerusalem, the golden! O city of the blest! O heavenly land of promise! the weary pilgrim's rest; Safe through the thorny journey; freed from the strife of sin; Within the walls of jasper; the pearly gates within. 2 What peace bej'ond all telling; what joy, for them whose feet Stand by the crystal river, and walk the golden street! With boughs of palm, like victors, arrayed in robes of white; With hymns of glad thanksgiving, they throng the halls of light. 3 They thirst not, neither hunger, who gain that bright abode, With oil of love anointed, as kings and priests to God. O dear and blessed vision, the Seer of Patmos tells! What glad and hopeful tidings the prophet's voice reveals! 4 Behold, the Tabernacle of God is now with men; And He will dwell among them, and heal their grief and pain. And he that overcometh shall be the Father's heir, Within the glorious city, and dwell forever there. Liturgy 27. 119 1 Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee: Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty; Father and Savior, glory be to Thee. HYMNS. 195 2 Holy, holy, holy, all the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Thou wast, and art, and evermore shalt be. 3 Holy, holy, holy, though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see, Thou alone art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in power, in love and purity. 4 Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty; Father and Savior, glory be to Thee. Liturgy 7. 120 121 1 Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid: Star of the East, the horizon adorning, Guide where the infant Redeemer is laid. 2 Cold on His cradle the dewdrops are shining, Low lies His bed with the beasts of the stall; Angels adore Him in slumber reclining, Maker, and Monarch, and Savior of all. 3 Say shall we yield Him, in costly devotion, Odors of Edom, and offerings divine ? Gems of the mountain and pearls of the ocean, Myrrh from the forest and gold from the mine ? 4 Vainly we offer each ample oblation, Vainly with gifts would His favor secure; Richer by far is the heart's adoration, Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor. Liturgy 77. 1 O praise ye the Lord! prepare your glad voice, His praise in the great assembly to sing; In God the Redeemer let Israel rejoice, And children of Zion be glad in their King. 2 O worship the King, all glorious above; O gratefully sing His power and His love; Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days, Pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise. Liturgy 40. I96 HYMNS. 122 123 t Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die; O Christ, Thy triumph now begin O'er captive death and conquered sin. 2 Ride on, ride on in majesty! Hark! all the tribes Hosanna cry; O Savior meek, pursue Thy road, With palms and scattered garments strewed. 3 Ride on, ride on in majesty! The winged armies of the sky Look down in wonder now to see Thy conflict and Thy victory. 4 Ride on, ride on in majesty! The last and fiercest strife is nigh; Bow Thy meek head to mortal pain — Then take, O Lord, Thy power and reign. Liturgy 31. 1 With songs and honors sounding loud, Address the Lord on high; O'er all the heavens He spreads His cloud, And waters veil the sky. He sends His showers of blessings down To cheer the plain below; He makes the grass the mountains crown, And corn in valleys grow. 2 His steady counsels change the face Of each declining year; He bids the sun cut short his race, And wintry days appear. His hoary frost, His fleecy snow, Descend and clothe the ground; The liquid streams forbear to flow, In icy fetters bound. 3 He sends His word and melts the snow, The fields no longer mourn; He calls the warmer gales to blow, And bids the spring return. The changing wind, the flying cloud, Obey His mighty word; With songs and honors sounding loud, Praise ye the sovereign Lord! Liturgy 14s. 124 125 HYMNS. 197 i When, marshalled on the nightly plain, The glittering host bestud the sky, One star alone of all the train Can fix the sinner's wandering eye. 2 Hark, hark! to God the chorus breaks From every host, from every gem; But one alone the Savior speaks; It is the Star of Bethlehem. 3 It is my guide, my light, my all, It bids my dark forebodings cease; And through the storm and danger's thrall It leads me to the port of peace. 4 Then, safely moored, my perils o'er, I'll sing, first in night's diadem, Forever and for evermore, The Star, the Star of Bethlehem. Liturgy 79. The Lord my pasture shall prepare, And feed me with a shepherd's care; His presence shall my wants supply, And guard me with a watchful eye; My noon-day walks He shall attend, And all my midnight hours defend. When in the sultry glebe I faint, Or on the thirsty mountain pant, To fertile vales and dewy meads My weary, wandering steps He leads, Where peaceful rivers, soft and slow, Amid the verdant landscape flow. Though in a bare and rugged way, Through devious lonely wilds I stray, Thy bounty shall my wants beguile; The barren wilderness shall smile, With sudden green and herbage crowned, And streams shall murmur all around. Though in the paths of death I tread, With gathering shadows overspread, My steadfast heart shall fear no ill, For Thou, O Lord, art with me still; Thy friendly rod shall give me aid, And guide me through the dreadful shade. Liturgy 12. I98 HYMNS. 126 127 1 Holy night! peaceful night! All is dark, save the light Yonder where they sweet vigil keep O'er the babe, who in silent sleep Rests in heavenly peace, Rests in heavenly peace. 2 Holy night! peaceful night! Only for shepherd's sight Came blest visions of angel through With their loud hallelujah songs, Hail! the Savior is come, Hail! the Savior is come. 3 Holy night! peaceful night! Child of heaven! O how bright Thou didst smile on us when Thou wast bora, Blest indeed was that happy morn, Full of heavenly joy, Full of heavenly joy. Liturgy 68. Calm on the listening ear of night Come heaven's melodious strains, Where wild Judea stretches far Her silver-mantled plains. Celestial choirs from courts above Shed sacred glories there, And angels with their tuneful lyres Make music on the air. The answering hills of Palestine Send back the glad reply, And greet, from all their holy heights, The Day-Spring from on high. While o'er the deep, blue Galilee There comes a holier calm; And Sharon waves, in solemn praise, Her silent groves of palm. Glory to God! the lofty strain The realms of ether fills; How sweeps the song of solemn joy O'er Judah's sacred hills! Glory to God! the sounding skies Loud with their anthems ring; Peace on the earth; good will to men, From heaven's eternal King! Liturgy 162, 128 HYMNS. 199 i O Zion, rise in glory, And shine before thy Lord; Behold thy wondrous story Unfolded in His Word. Though powers of darkness hover To slay thee at thy birth, Thy radiance yet shall cover The nations of the earth. 2 His guardian care is o'er thee, His hand shall lift thee high; The nations bow before thee, And kings to thee draw nigh; Lift up thine eyes! around thee They throng, a countless band; The Lord's right arm shall found thee, His voice shall bid thee stand. Liturgy 54. 129 1 Sons of men, behold from far, Hail! the long-expected star; Jacob's star that gilds the night, Guides bewildered nature right. Mild it shines on all beneath, Piercing through the shades of death; Scattering error's wide-spread night, Kindling darkness into light. 2 Nations all, remote and near, Haste to see your God appear: Haste, for Him your hearts prepare, Meet Him manifested there. There behold the Day-Spring rise, Pouring light upon your eyes: See it chase the shades away, Shining to the perfect day. Liturgy 78. 130 1 Come, Thou Almighty King, 2 Our only God, to Thee Help us Thy name to sing, Our highest praises be Help us to praise! Hence evermore! Father! all glorious, Thy sovereign majesty O'er all victorious, May we in glory see, Come, and reign over us, And to eternity Ancient of Days! Love and adore. The Children, while singing the Processional, may take their offering to the Chancel, and place it in the receptacle held by the Minister; or the offering may be made at the door on entering, and brought forward in the usual manner during the Hymn following the Address. Responsives before the Prayers may be introduced in any Service, at the discretion of the Minister. In announcing the First and Second Lessons the Minister may say, The Word of the Lord as it is written in such a chapter of such a book. In announcing the Third Lesson the Minister may say, The Word of the Lord in the Heavenly Doctrine as it is written in such a book, such a number. After every Lesson the Minister may say, Here endeth the first, second, or third Lesson. After announcing the close of the Third Lesson the Minister may say, The Lord add His blessing to the reading of His Word. The First Lesson should be historical, from the Old or New Testa- ment. The Second Lesson should be from the Psalms, Prophets, the Gos- pels, or the Revelation. The Third Lesson may be from the Writings. Selected Reading in place of the Third Lesson may be chosen from one of the non-canonical books of the Old or New Testament, or from other religious books, prose or poetry. Vocal or instrumental music may be introduced immediately before the Interlude. A number of Hebrew Recitations, Chants, and Anthems, may be used in the Second Service; and a number of Greek selections in the Third Service. The Fourth Service is designed to include a complete story from the Word, presented consecutively in the Lessons, and treated of in the Address. 244 NOTES. 245 Any of the Services for Children may be used at Christmas or Easter by introducing appropriate Recitations and singing. Any Service in this Hymnal may be shortened at the discretion of the Minister. Family Worship. Form I may be opened with the Reading if desired. Form III may be used for a Sunday Service by the isolated, or by a society in the absence of the Minister. Complete arrangements for holding Family Worship would include a Repository, and an Altar or Table covered with a red or white cloth, upon which lighted candles may be placed. Recitations. The Minister alone should repeat the opening words of the Ten Commandments in Hebrew or English. In announcing other unisonal Recitations the Minister may repeat the first phrase. The Lord 's Prayer in Greek should be used as a conclusion to other Greek Recitations. In the Hebrew Recitations, Chants, and Anthems, only the most essential vowel accents have been retained, to simplify the text for use in worship. Doxologies. Doxologies following the sentence, "Praise ye the Lord", should be introduced by the organ alone. An "Amen" should be sung at the close of all short Doxologies, Chants, and Hymns. CHANTING. Chant music is designed to enable a choir or congregation to intone the words of Scripture. It is of first importance, therefore, to preserve the natural expression, and thus the meaning and holy affec- tion, of the words. To this end, the division of the lines, and the plac- ing of the accents, follows the sense and rhythm of the words. For the most part, they can be chanted as they would be read or spoken. Occasional exceptions are made necessary by the form of the music. In rendering the lines, English or Hebrew, the accent or stress, and the quantity or time given the syllables, should be as nearly as possible the same as in speaking. The speed of utterance should be neither too slow nor too fast. When too slow, the vigor and unity of the singing is endangered; when too fast, the meaning and reverent expression of the words is lost. A more rapid chanting in practices will bring about the happy medium in worship. A chant should be introduced by the organ at the tempo it is to be sung. The following Rules and Examples are provided to aid in the teaching and learning of correct and uniform chanting. The music of the chant should be learned by heart, that the entire attention of the singer may be given to the words. The teacher should be able to show the correct rendering of the lines by singing them. RUIyKS. The words, from the beginning of each line up to the accented syllable, are called the Recitation. The note on which the Recitation is made is called the Reciting Note. There is no pause in the Recita- tion except where punctuation occurs, and then there is a full stop. The words, from the accented syllable to the end of each line, are called the Cadence. On reaching the accent, and beginning with it, the music of the chant properly commences, in strict time {a tempo), the upright lines in the words corresponding to the bars of the music. From the accent to the first upright line, the words correspond to the first measure of the music. The Cadence is sung without pause of any kind, even where punctuation occurs. There should be no ritard in any part of the chant. Where more than two syllables occur in a single measure of the Cadence, a dot is placed to indicate the proper division of the syllables. 246 CHANTING. 247 When there are two or more syllables in the last measure of the Cadence, they are to be sung as they would be pronounced in speaking. The pause between the lines should not be longer than is necessary to take breath. The Acce?it mark indicates the beginning of the Cadence. There should be no break or pause between the Recitation and the Accent. The accented syllable is not to be sung louder than the rest, nor held longer than it would be held in speaking. In an English word of two or more syllables, the accented syllable usually has less quantity or time than the rest. The final ed is to be pronounced wherever it occurs. The article "the" is long before a vowel, short before a consonant. Take breath only at the end of lines, or at punctuation in the Reci- tation. The following Examples are given to illustrate the Rules, and to show the correct rendering of the various lines. When there is no syllable after the accent: — RECITATION. CADENCE.
