And the ass his master's crib : But Israel doth not know. Ye will <" revolt more and more : The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. ^ From the sole of the foot even unto the head tJiere is no soundness in it ; But wounds, and bruises, and iDutrifjdug sores: They have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ^ ointment. ' Your country is desolate. Your cities m'e burned with fire : Your land, strangers devour it in your pres- ence, And it is desolate, *as overthrown by strangers. ^ And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard. As a lodge in a garden of cucumbers. As a besieged city. ^ Except the Lord of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant. ISAIAH, 1. ^' To what purpose is the multitude of your sac- rifices unto me ? saith the Lord : I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts ; And I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of /he goats. ^'^ When ye come 9 to appear before me. Who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts ? ^^ Bring no more vain oblations ; incense is an abomination unto me; The new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with ; It is ^iniquity, even the solemn meeting. ^•^ Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth : They are a trouble unto me ; I am weary to bear tJiem. '^ If je be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land : -•^ But if ye refuse and rebel, Ye shall be devoured with the sword : For the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. "^ How is the faithful city become a harlot ! It was full of judgment ; righteousness lodged in it ; But now murderers. ^' Thy silver is become dross. Neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them. -4 Therefore saith the Lord, the Lord of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, And avenge me of mine enemies. -'" And I will turn my hand upon thee. And "' purely purge away thy dross, And take away all thy tin : -^ And I will restore thy judges as at the first, And thy counsellors as at the beginning : Afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city. ^^ Zion shall be redeemed with judgment. And "her converts with righteousness. 23 And the "destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners sJiall be together, And they that forsake the Lord shall be con- sumed. -^ For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired. "^ And the strong shall be as tow, ^And the maker of it as a spark, And they shall both burn together, and none shall quench them, p 'T^HE word that Isaiah the son of Amoz -L saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, Tlmt the mountain of the Lord's house shall be '^ established in the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills ; and all nations shall flow unto it. 2 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, To the house of the God of Jacob ; and he will teach us of his ways. And we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the Lord from Jerusa- lem. * And he shall judge among the nations, And shall rebuke many people : And they shall beat their swords into plough- shares. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war any more. 5 O house of Jacob, come ye, And let us walk in the light of the Lord, ^ Therefore thou hast forsaken thy people the house of Jacob, Because they be replenished " from the east, And are soothsayers like the Philistines, And they '^ please themselves in the children of strangers. ^ Their land also is full of silver and gold. Neither is there any end of their treasures ; Their land is also full of horses, Neither is there any end of their chariots : s Their land also is full of idols ; They worship the work of their own hands. That which their own fingers have made : ^ And the mean man boweth down. And the great man humbleth himself : Therefore forgive them not. '''Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust. ISAIAH, 3. 11 For fear of the Lord, and for the glory of his majesty, When he ariseth to shake terribly the earth. -^ In that day a man shall cast -^his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, 'Which they made each one for himself to worship, To the moles and to the bats ; "' To go into the clefts of the rocks, And into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the Lord, and for the glory of his majesty. When he ariseth to shake terribly the earth. '-'- Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils : for wherein is he to be accounted of ? And the counsellor, and the cunning artificer, and the * eloquent orator. ** And I will give children to he their princes. And babes shall rule over them. ^ And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: The child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, And the base against the honourable. ^ When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, And let this ruin he under thy hand : ■^ In that day shall he ' swear, saying, I will not be a "^ healer ; For in my house is neither bread nor cloth- ing: Make me not a ruler of the people. ^ For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen : Because their tongue and their doings are against the Lord, To provoke the eyes of his glory. 9 The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; And they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. h Or, skilful of speech, c Heb. lift up the hand, Gen. 14. 22. d Heb. hinder tip. ISAIAH, 3. 13 Woe unto their soul ! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves. ^0 Say ye to the righteous, that it slmll he well with Mm : For they shall eat the fruit of their doings. '^ Woe unto the wicked ! it shall he ill with him: For the reward of his hands shall be * given him. '- As for my people, children are their oppressors, And women rule over them. O my people, /they which lead thee cause thee to err, And 9 destroy the way of thy paths. ^^ The Lord standeth up to plead. And standeth to judge the people. '^ The Lord will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof : For ye have '^ eaten up the vineyard; The spoil of the poor is in your houses. '^ What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces. And grind the faces of the poor? Saith the Lord God of hosts. ISAIAH, 4. 15 2-* And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink ; And instead of a girdle a rent ; And instead of well set hair baldness ; And instead of a stomacher a girding of sack- cloth ; And burning instead of beauty. 25 Thy men shall fall by the sword, And thy ? mighty in the war. 2^ And her gates shall lament and mourn ; And she being 'desolate shall sit upon the ground. A AND in that day seven women shall take -^^ hold of one man, saying. We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel ; Only « let us be called by thy name, *To take away our reproach. - In that day shall the branch of the Lord be '^ beautiful and glorious. And the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely '^ For them that are escaped of Israel. 2 And it shall come to pass, that h For the Lord hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep. And hath closed your eyes : The prophets and your /rulers, the seers hath he covered. '' And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a j^ book that is sealed. Which men deliver to one that is learned, Saying, Read this, I pray thee : And he saith, I cannot ; for it is sealed : '- And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, Saying, Read this, I pray thee : And he saith, I am not learned. And with their lips do honour me, But have removed their heart far from me. And their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men : '"* Therefore, behold, ^ I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, Even a marvellous work and a wonder : For the wisdom of their wise men shall perish. And the understanding of their prudent 'inen, shall be liid. 15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord, And their works are in the dark, And they say. Who seeth us ? and who know- eth us? '^ Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay : For shall the work say of him that made it. He made me not ? Or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it. He had no understanding ? ^"^ Is it not yet a very little while, And Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field. ISAIAH, 29. 99 ' '* And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, And the eyes of the blind shall see out of ob- scurity, and out of darkness. '^ The meek also * shall increase tlieir joy in the Lord, And the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. '-'^ For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, And all that watch for iniquity are cut off : '-' That make a man an offender for a word, And lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate. And turn aside the just for a thing of nought. "'- Therefore thus saith the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, Jacob shall not now be ashamed, Neither shall his face now wax pale. -" But when he seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, They shall sanctify my name. And sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, And shall fear the God of Israel. '^^ They also that erred in spirit ^ shall come to understanding, And they that murmured shall learn doctrine. i Heb. shall add. k Heb. shall knoio understanding. 100 ISAIAH, QA TT70E to the rebellious children, saith ^^ VV the Lord, That take counsel, but not of me ; And that cover with a covering, but not of my Spirit, That they may add sin to sin : 2 That walk to go down into Egypt, And have not asked at my mouth ; To strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, And to trust in the shadow of Egypt ! 3 Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, And the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion. ^ For his princes were at Zoan, And his ambassadors came to Hanes. 5 They were all ashamed of a people tlmt could not profit them, Nor be a help nor profit, But a shame, and also a reproach. ^ The burden of the beasts of the south : Into the land of trouble and anguish. From whence come the young and old lion, The viper and fiery flying serpent. They will carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses. ISAIAH, 30. 101 And their treasures upon the bunches of camels, To a people that shall not profit them. '' For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose : Therefore have I cried "concerning this. Their strength is to sit still. * Now go, write it before them in a table, And note it in a book, That it may be for * the time to come For ever and ever : ^ That this is a rebellious people, lying children, Children that will not hear the law of the Lord: '*^ Which say to the seers, See not ; And to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things. Speak unto us smooth things, Prophesy deceits : " Get you out of the way. Like as the lion and the young lion roaring on his prey, When a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, He will not be afraid of their voice. Nor abase himself for the ''noise of them : So shall the Lord of hosts come down To tight for mount Zion, and for the hill thereof. As birds flying, so will the Lord of hosts de- fend Jerusalem ; Defending also he will deliver it ; And passing over he will preserve it. ^ Turn ye unto Mm from whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted. Which your own hands have made unto j^ou for a sin. ^ Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man ; And the sword, not of a mean man, shall de- vour him : But he shall flee ^ from the sword. And his princes shall be afraid of the ensign, Saith the Lord, whose fire is in Zion, And his furnace in Jerusalem. op "OEHOLD, a King shall reign in right- -L* eousness. And princes shall rule in judgment. ^ And a man shall be as a hiding place from the wind. And a covert from the tempest ; As rivers of water in a dry place. " Tremble, ye women that are at ease ; Be troubled, ye careless ones : Strip you, and make you bare, and gird sack- cloth upon your loins. ^- They shall lament for the teats, For s the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine. ^^ Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers ; '' Yea, upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city: ^^ Because the palaces shall be forsaken ; The multitude of the city shall be left ; The *'forts and towers shall be for dens for ever, A joy of wild asses, a pasture of flocks ; '^ Until the Spirit be poured upon us from on high. And the wilderness be a fruitful field, And the fruitful field be counted for a forest. "^ Then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness, And righteousness remain in the fruitful field. And your fingers with iniquity ; Your lips have spoken lies. ISAIAH, 59. 203 Neither shall they cover themselves with their works : Their works are works of iniquity, And the act of violence is in their hands. ^ Their feet run to evil.
