 BENGAL AUXILIARY MISSIONARY SOCIETY, 
 
 Was held on the 3rd of January 1821, when the Report of the 
 Committee, containing a statement of tlieir proceedings during the 
 last year was read to tiie Patrons and Friends of the Institution, 
 by wliom it was adopted. 
 
 Tlie thanks of the Meeting were unanimously voted to the 
 Calcutta Ladies Branch Missionary Society; to the CiiiN- 
 suRAH Branch Missionary Society ; to His Majesty’s 17i’ii 
 Regiment of Foot, for their liberal contributions in aid of this 
 Society; to the different Friends in America, for their kind con- 
 tributions forwarded to Mr. Pearson, for the purpose of being 
 expended in imparting support and Christian education to Native 
 Youths; also to the Committee for their attention to the Interests 
 of the Society during the past year. 
 
 After which the Committee was chosen ; the Rev. Messrs. 
 Townley, Ksitii, and Trawin were reriucstetl to continue as 
 Secretaries ; and Messrs. W. Hunt and G-, Gogerly were appointed 
 Collectors for the ensuing year. 
 
 The Meeting was opened and concluded with Prayer and Praise 
 to Him who alone can can crown the efforts of his people to spread 
 the fame of His name among the Heathen. After which the friends 
 of the Institution came forward with their wonted liberality, and 
 gave of their substance to aid the sacred cause.

 l. 
 
 That this Meeting do cordially approve of the plan and con- 
 stitution of “The Missionary Society established in London in 
 the year 1795,” and of which the following is the fundamental 
 principle; “As the union of God’s people of various denominations 
 in carrying on this great work is a most desirable object, so to 
 prevent if possible any cause of future dissension, it is declared 
 to be a fundamental principle of the Missionary Society, that our 
 design is not to send Presbyterianism, Independency, Episcopacy, 
 or any other form of Church order and government, (about which 
 there may be dilfcrence of opinion amongst serious persons,) but 
 the Glorious Gospel of the Blessed God to the Heathen; and that 
 it shall be left, as it ought to be left, to the minds of the persons 
 whom God may call into the fellowship of his Son, from among 
 them, to assume for themselves such form of government as to 
 them shall appear most agreeable to the Word of God,

 That a Society be now formed, to he denomiirated “ The Bengal 
 Auxiliary Missionary Society.”

 That the design of this Society be to promote the objects of the 
 London Missionary Society chiefly in the province of Bengal.

 IV. 
 
 Tlint tlie boundaiies of Bengal be defined as comprising all tlial 
 part of the country in which the Bengalee language is principally 
 s]ioken.

 That the preceding Resolutions are not intended to check the more 
 enlarged usefulness of tlie Society, with respect to extending its 
 oi)erations beyond the boundaries of Bengal, should the state of the 
 I'linds and the openings of Providence permit.

 That every person subscribing any sum Monthly nr Annually be 
 considered a Member of this Society, and entitled to vote at its 
 General Meetings.

 Tliat any Subscrib'er being desirous of appropriating the whole or 
 part of Ids or her Subscription either exclusively to the preaching of 
 the Gospel, or to the distribution of the Scriptures and Tracts, or to 
 the establishing of Schools, or any other particular branch or 
 branches of Missionary Work, such Subscriber be at liberty so to do.

 That the affairs of the Society be conducted by a Committee con- 
 sisting of fifteen Members, including the Secretaries, to be chosen 
 annually from among the Members of the Society, with power to 
 supply any vacancies that may occur, and to add to their number if 
 it be by them deemed expedient. 
 
 IX. 
 
 That no jSIonies he paid out of the Fund, except under an order 
 signed by at least one of the Missionaries under the Patronage of the 
 Parent Society, and two more Members of the Committee.

 Tliat all the proceedings of the Committee be subject to the appro- 
 bation and control of the Parent Society.

 I'HE various and increasing exertions vrliich are 
 being made for tlie spread of the Gospel in this vast 
 and populous quarter of the globe, seem to justify a 
 belief, that the morning star of that glorious day has 
 arisen in the East, when the worshippers of idols, the 
 followers of the false prophet, and the devotees of 
 every superstition, shall become worshippers of the 
 one only living and true God, in spirit and in truth. 
 Your Committee venture to cherish the idea, that the 
 humble exertions of this Society, have in some small 
 degree, aided in accelerating its approach. They are 
 aware that the great day of tlie Lord only can accu- 
 rately develope what has been accomplished,, but they 
 entertain the hope, that this Institution has, in the hands 
 of Divine Providence, been the instrument of contri- 
 buting, in some little measure,, to the fulfilment of those 
 exceeding great and glorious prophecies, which relate 
 to tlie ultimate and universal extension of the Re-* 
 deemer’s Kingdom.

 Increase of Labourers. 
 
 'Ihose who pray that the Lord of the haiwest would 
 thrust forth labourers into his vineyard, will with plea- 
 sure learn that Mr. Edward Hay, in the beginning of 
 last year, gave himself up to the work of the Lord 
 in this uncultivated part of his vineyard. In the month 
 of February, he and Mr. Harle commenced the study 
 of Dr, Bogue’s Theological Lectures, which are used 
 in tire Missionary Academy at Gosport, and they are 
 both continuing their pursuit after such an insight into 
 the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, aird such 
 an acquaintance with the Bengalee Language, as shall, 
 by the Divine blessing, render them workmen needing 
 not to be ashamed, rigidly dividing the word of truth to 
 the poor Heathen around them, v\lio are perishing for 
 lack of knowdedge. 
 
 It affords your Committee also no small degree of 
 pleasure to mention, that in the month of March last, 
 Messrs. Adam and Munuy by the kind hand of Provi- 
 dence were brought safe to the shores of India. The 
 former, with his partner, were destined for Benares, by 
 the Directors of tlic Parent Society, and they luive 
 arrived at the sphere of their labours. An extract of a 
 letter from Mr. Adam to our late beloved brother Mr. 
 Hampson, will be found in the Appendix, calculated to 
 encourage this Society, and stimulate its members to 
 greater exertions ; as they will thereby find that further 
 doors of usefulness are opening. Mr. Mundy, who 
 was appointed to strengthen the Mission at Chinsurah,

 has commenced his labours, both in the English and 
 Bengalee departments. 
 
 Though painful, it becomes the duty of your Com- 
 mittee to refer to tlm mysterious dispensation of Divine 
 Providence, that has called away Mr. Hami’Son from 
 the field of labour to that of glorious rest. He had 
 acquired the Bengalee Language so as to be able to 
 explain the Lord’s commission to the Natives, Go ye 
 into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every 
 creature. By the removal of so pious, devoted, in- 
 telligent, and every way valuable a labourer, the Lord 
 teaches us that he can work by few as well as by many, 
 and impresses it upon us, that whatsoever our hand 
 Jindeth to do, ive should do it with all our might ; for 
 there is no ivork nor device in the grave to which we are 
 hastening. 
 
 Preaching. 
 
 Mirzapore Bungaloiv Chapel — (by the side of Mut- 
 chuah Bazar Hoad). The Gospel has been preached in 
 this Chapel from week to week during the past year, 
 and the attendance has been upon an average from 
 to 30. A small number indeed compared with Christian 
 congregatioris, but not esteemed small by the Mis- 
 sionary; who is aware of the igiiorance, inditference, and 
 inveterate prejudices of the Heathen from among whom 
 it is gathered. Early in the beginning of the year it 
 was thought adviseable to have worship by candle-light, 
 and service is now conducted in it of an evening, in 
 order to give an opportunity to those whose engage- 
 ments prevent them from hearing the Gospel through 
 the course of the day.

 Mdniclctula Bungalov) Chopel.-^T'ht pr^acMng and 
 attendimce at tliis place has run nearly parallel with 
 that oi' Mirzapore. 
 
 Kidderpore* Bungalow Chapet.-^'Thc attention paid 
 to the preaching of the Gospel out of doors at this 
 village, encouraged your Committee to think of erecting 
 a Bungalow Chapel there. One of your Committee 
 having applied to a gentleman residing in Kidderpore, 
 to help the Society in obtaining a piece of ground for 
 that purpose, he not only soon procured a suitable spot, 
 but proceeded to build a large Bungalow on it, at his 
 own expense. He also defrays the cost of ground 
 rent, and lighting of the Chapel for public worship 
 every Tuesday evening. Your Committee have tho 
 pleasure of adding, that at this Bungalow the atten- 
 dance is more numerous, and the attention paid to the 
 word of life, greater than at any of the other Chapels 
 connected with the Mission. This under God’s blessing, 
 is partly to be accounted for by the friend to the 
 cause above alluded to, himself attending when public 
 worship is conducted, and thus encouraging by his 
 example, as well as counsel, his Heathen dependants 
 and neighbours, to hearken to those things which 
 belong to their peace. The influence of a layman 
 thus acting is very considerable, as the Natives have 
 no room to suspect him of being prompted by any 
 interested motive. 
 
 Tally Gunge . — This station was occupied from the

 beginning of February until the approach of the rainy 
 season Since the rains have subsided, the death of 
 one of the Missionaries, and the indisposition of others, 
 have prevented it from being re-occupied. The Mis- 
 sionaries are anxiously waiting for the moment when 
 their force will be sufficient to enable them to resume 
 with vigour, this wide and promising sphere of action. 
 
 Dhunimtula Lodge . — Here the Gospel has been re- 
 gularly preached to the Natives (principally servants) 
 every Sabbath afternoon ; and it is only to be lamented 
 that heads of families do not more encourage the atten- 
 dance of their dependants. It is still however a pleasing 
 consideration, that some every Sabbath afternoon have 
 heard the great truths of Salvation. 
 
 Chinsurah. — A Bungalow Chapel has been erected at 
 -this place at the expense of the Society. Public 
 worship in the Bengalee language has been, and con- 
 tinues to be conducted in it by the brethren at the 
 station ; and conversations are frequently lield in it, 
 and some times of a very interesting nature, between 
 the Missionaries and the Natives, respecting the doc- 
 trines, precepts, and authority of the Christian religion. 
 
 The preaching of the Missionaries has not been 
 confined to the before-mentioned places; but endea- 
 vouring to walk in the steps of the first great champions 
 of the faith, they have, as in former years, gone into 
 the market-places and the high-ways, and preached 
 unto the people Jesus and the resurrection. Thus 
 they have endeavoured to sow beside all waters, not 
 knowing which may prosper, whether this or that.

 It is recorded of the Lord Jesus Christ, that 
 ^vhcn he was on earth, he went about all the cities 
 and villages, teaching and preaching the Gospel; with 
 this ilhistiious cxamnle in view, it wa,s deemed ex- 
 pedicnt, that one of the Missionaries, in the cold season, 
 should make a tour to preach the Gospel, and dis- 
 tribute tracts, in the towns and villages along the banks 
 of the river. Mr. IIarle was tixed upon; and for this 
 purpose he left Calcutta in the beginning of November 
 last, and proceeded up the river. A few extracts from 
 a letter recently receiA'cd from him (which will be 
 found in the Appendix,) will shew the utility of such an 
 excursion, and will encourage your Committee to adopt 
 the same measure on future occasions, to diffuse divine 
 knowledge in this way ; for they are assured that the 
 word of God shall not return to him void, but shall 
 accomplish that which he jjleases, and it shall prosper in- 
 that whereto he sends it. 
 
 Schools. 
 
 The number of Schools in the district of Chinsurah 
 is at present 13, and the number of children taught 
 in them amounts to 1,330. The number of Schools 
 in the Bankipore district is 11, and the number of 
 Scholars 1,140. 
 
 The difficulties referred to in the last Report, of 
 carrying into effect the wishes of the zealous and kind 
 contributers to the cause in America, still continue 
 to exist. Nondokoomar, the Hindoo youth spoken of 
 in page 12 of that Report, continues under the charge of 
 Mr. Pbarson at Chinsurah, and is making encouraging

 progress in th« knowledge of Christianity, anti the 
 rudiments of learning ; l.mt jmur Committee are unable 
 to report success in the endeavours, which have been 
 made to obtain more Hindoo Children, for the purpose 
 of imparting to them a Christian education. 
 
 The School at Chitlah, continues to be supported 
 by the Society. The Missionaries from unexpected 
 causes have not been able to bestow that time and 
 attention upon it, which they had anticipated. It has 
 however been supplied with Christian tracts, which 
 one of the Members of the Committee has heard some 
 of the boys read with considerable fluency. 
 
 On the 1st of Decemer last, a School was opened in 
 the Bungalow Chapel at Kiddcrporc; the Scriptures 
 and religious tracts arc to be school books ; and 
 the gentleman who built the Bungalow, has kindly 
 taken upon himself to defray the salary of the school- 
 master. The School was commenced with only three 
 or four boys, but they are now increased to the number 
 of 25, some of whom have committed to memory 
 three lessons of the first part of the Society’s w'ork, 
 called School Lessons, together with a part of the 
 first and second chapters of Matthew. The boys attend 
 also on Sabbath mornings during Divine worship. 
 
 M hile on the subject of Schools, it will be proper 
 to mention, that the children wiio have attended on 
 Sabbath mornings at the Lodge, have, during the last 
 year, made considerable progress in committing to 
 memory, the Assembly’s Catechisms, Dr. Watt’s Ca- 
 techism, together with various Hymns, and portions.

 of sacred Scripture. At a late examination, the Visitor 
 vas very much pleased with the correctness with 
 which the children answered the several questions put 
 to them, as well as the perfect manner iu wliich they 
 had rehearsed vvhat they had stored up iu their minds. 
 This School continues to be opened on Sabbath morn- 
 ings, at half past eight o’clock, as usual; and parents 
 are invited to send their children to it, that they may 
 be instructed in the elements of religious knowledge. 
 
 Tracts. 
 
 The increased and increasing facility with which the 
 Katives read the printed character, tends to encourage 
 your Committee to go forward in this department of their 
 work ; they have during the last year printed at their 
 Society’s press, in Bengalee 14,500 Tracts. In English 
 and Bengalee 14,500. In Hinduwee 4,000. In English 
 and Ilinduwee 1 ,000, amounting in all to 34,000. There 
 have been issued from the Society’s Depository in 
 the past year, 30,000 Tracts.

 With regard to the result of the distribution of 
 these Tracts, the Committee consider themselves like 
 the husbandman, who casts the precious grain into 
 the earth, and waiting patiently for the rain and dews of 
 heaven, does not expect to reap a harvest till a con- 
 siderable period after he has sown the seed. 
 
 Your Committee, however, for the encouragement 
 of the friends of the Society, would not altogether 
 pass unnoticed one instance of the usefulness of the 
 Tracts which has come to their knowledge: some of 
 these little publications, the produce of the Society’s 
 first years’ exertions, w^ere given away to a Bramin 
 at Kalee Ghaut, who was then a Mounohrotee, that 
 is, under a vow of silence. 
 
 These Tracts, especially one of the parts of the History 
 of the Saviour of the World, the Bramin afterwards de- 
 clared, had much impressed his mind. His convictions 
 became deepened by the preaching of the Gospel, which 
 he heard by the road-side, and a revolution so far took

 place in his mind and conduct, as to lead his countrymen 
 to persecute and shamefully entreat him. He came to 
 Calcutta for refuge, and obtained it in the house of Mr. 
 John Peters a preaclier of the Gospel to the natives, 
 v,ho explained to him the Avay of Salvation more ])er~ 
 fectly, and with so much success, that in the opinion of 
 Dr. Carey he became a fit subject to receive the ordi- 
 nance of initiation into the Christian Church, and w as 
 baptized by him accordingly. 
 
 Other instances of partial usefulness, by means of this 
 Society’s tracts might be specified, but it may perhaps 
 be suuicient to say in general terms, that rays of Divine 
 light have entered the dark minds of such a number of 
 idolaters by means of these little messengers of truth, as 
 in the opinion of your Coininittee to justify this Society 
 in making the distribution of religious tracts a promi- 
 nent part of its operations. 
 
 Many^ of the native readers of the Gospel 3Iagazine 
 have expressed themselves much pleased with the work. 
 This is an encouraging circumstance, calculated to 
 strengthen our liands, and should stimulate us to greater 
 exertions in sending this periodical publication, to their 
 residences, a mode wlticli has been adopted during the 
 past year. — One of the Secretaries is in possession of a 
 list of their names, amounting to about 500, to whom the 
 Gospel Magazine is irow legulariy sent ; and many in this 
 way hear something of the Gospel of Jesus Chris r, 
 which they otherwise would not have an opportunity of 
 doing.

 Mrs. May, has been added to the library ; also a number 
 Mi Evangelical Magazines, ond other woiks presented to 
 the Parent Society in Ihigland, and by them forwarded 
 to the library of this Institution.

 The Society being provided with a press of its own, 
 your Committee have deemed it expedient to print, in 
 addition to the foregoing Tracts for natives, the follow- 
 ing religious works in English, for sale, the proceeds to 
 be added to the funds of this Society. 
 
 Clark’s Promises, a work well caleulotcd to inspire Christians 
 with zeal in the great cause of promoting true religion among the 
 heathen. 
 
 Short Sermons, by a Lady, for the use of Schools. This little book 
 is well adapted to store the young mind w-ith important truths, and 
 to lead the rising generation to remember their Creator in the days 
 of their Youth. 
 
 Hymns for Infant Minds. 
 
 Dr. W atls’s Divine Sonys for Children, 
 
 Dr. Doddridge’ s First Principles of Religion. 
 
 These little works your Committee hope will have their 
 use in contributing to the promotion of real piety among 
 those w ho profess the Christian religion in this country ;

 and thus, though indirectly, yet substantially subserve 
 the Missionary cause. 
 
 A list stating the prices of these works will be found 
 in the Apendix. 
 
 Union Chapel. 
 
 On 31 st December 1820, the subscriptions realized 
 and paid into the Building Fund, together with the inte- 
 rest allowed by Messrs. Alexander and Co. amounted 
 to Sicea Rupees 26,315. 14. 6. being an increase of 
 6,315. 14. 6. during the past year. 
 
 The ground in Dhurumtula, mentioned in the last Re- 
 port, has been transferred to the Building Commitee, and 
 the purchase money (Sa. Rs. 10,000) has been paid out 
 of the Building Fund. 
 
 The Committee entered into an engagement witli 
 Messrs. Dykes and Co. as their builders, in the month 
 of April last ; and on the 3rd of May following, the 
 foundation-stone ot the Chapel was laid. 
 
 The sum of Sa. Rs. 12,000 has been advanced to 
 Messrs. Dykes and Co. there is consequently remain- 
 ing in the hands of Messrs. Alexander and Co. Sa. 
 Rs. 4,315. 14. 6. 
 
 By a calculation which has been made, it appears that 
 the Chapel itself will cost about Sa. Rs. 20,000, inde-

 The building is now roofed in, and a small sum more 
 in addition to the amount actually subscribed, will be 
 sufficient to enable the Building Committee to open the 
 Chai)el for public worship, as they have postponed the 
 erection of a Vestry, School-room, and other offices re- 
 quisite to render it in all respects complete, till after 
 the body of the Chapel shall have been tinished, and 
 become lit for the celebration of Divine Service, By 
 this means a considerable delay will have been avoid- 
 ed. It is the intention of the Committee afterwards 
 to proceed with these additional buildings, as fast as 
 the oontiibutions will enable them. 
 
 The Chapel is calculated to accommodate a congre- 
 gation of above 400 persons ; and it is expected that 
 sufficient progress will liave been made, to admit of its 
 being opened for Divine worship in the month ol March 
 next. 
 
 Donations and Monthly Subscriptions continue to be 
 thankfully received at Messrs. Alexander and Co’s, 
 the Treasurers, and by each of the Members of the 
 Building Committee. 
 
 A list of donors and Subscribers to Union Chapel 
 will be found in the appendix. 
 
 Your Committee having thus given an outline of 
 their proceedings during the past year, their work 
 finishes with submitting this Report to the Patrons and 
 Benefactors of the Society. But before they retire from 
 office, they would take the liberty of saying to every 
 well washer to the objects of the Institution, and to every

 every foot of land on wliicl) you tread, is your Divine 
 Master’s, and in a spiritual sense you may lay claim to it

 “The distribution of the Tracts with which we w'ere kindly sup- 
 plied on leaving Calcutta, afforded us no small gratification ; 
 the only thing we had to regret was, that the supply was 
 totally inadequate to enable us to meet the demands for them. 
 The avidity with which they were received in general was 
 truly delightful ; and in no case am I aware of having given a 
 single book to a person who could not read. I am sorry to 
 say that our stock was exhausted at_ Boglipore. As soon as 
 it was generally known there that I was distributing books, 
 many came to the Budgerow enquiring for them.
