INTRODUCTION. In a Manual of this kind it is customary to give a brief history of the- church which issues it. But as the history of this church has been so carefully written by Hon. Samuel T. Worcester, the historian of the town, and is printed in the " History of the Town of Hollis, " and as a brief sketch was previously printed in the Manual of 1871, it is deemed inexpedient to repeat. It is to be regretted that the records of tin' church in many of its years should have been so imperfectly kept, and that so many years elapsed in its earlier history when none were kept, thai the materials for a full history are sadly deficient. Very little is known of the action of the church previous to the year 1800. There is no list of the early members, — the list prepared* being the names of persons referred to in the church and other records as members There is evidence that even within thirty yeai\s, the names of persons joining never were recorded. It is probable that more than a hundred names, perhaps hundreds, have been irrecoverably lost. But it does not follow that the church has been deficient in its work, or that its members have lacked in spiritual power. The contrary has been the fact. Tins church has held, and still holds, an important posi- tion in the state as well as in the town. It has sent out excellent men and women, who have been a blessing to the communities where they have made their homes. Notwithstanding- the number who have gone out from us, the church has held its own with remarkable uniformity, having kept just about the same Dumber of members during the last fifty years, though the town meanwhile has lost nearly a third of its population. This may be called the fourth Manual of the church. The title page of the flrsl reads as follows :— "Doctrines of Faith, and Form id' Cove- nant, adopted by the Congregational Church of Christ in Hollis. Pub- lished by order of the church, for the use of each member, Eli Smith Pastor of said church. Printed by Joseph Cushing, Amherst, 1805." *To be found in Record book, in hands of church clerk, the list being revised, amended, and enlarged in 1887. The next attempt was this : — "The Confession of Faith and the Cove- nant of the Congregational Church in Hollis, N. H., 1831." There was also printed in 1837 what is virtually an appendix of this, reading as follows : — "Rules of Practice and Discipline adopted by the Congrega- tional Church in Hollis, March 1837." The third, and last, was issued in 1871. It is now the business of the children to take up the work that has been entrusted to them, remembering the promise that "he that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him." PRINCIPLES AND REGULATIONS. ADOPTED APRIL 12, 1888. As Disciples of Jesus Christ, associated in accordance with the teach- ings of the New Testament, for the public worship of God. for the obser- vance of Gospel sacraments and ordinances, for mutual edification and encouragement in the Christian life, and for the advancement of the Redeemer's kingdom in the world, Ave do adopt the following :— I. — NAME. The name of this church shall be The EVANGELICAL CONGREGATION- AL Church in Hollis. II.— CONFESSION OF FAITH. 1. Receiving the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament as the Word of God, and the only infallible ride of religious faith and practice, we confess our faith in the one living and true God. revealed as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, a being possessed of every possi- ble perfection, infinite in power, wisdom, holiness, justice, goodness and truth. 2. We believe in the universal sinfulness of our race, since "By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so deatli pa-— d upou all men. for that all have sinned." 3. We believe that the Lord Jeans Christ, having taken upon himself our nature, has. by his obedience, sufferings, and death, made an atone- ment, and thus provided a way of salvation for all mankind. SO that through faith in his name, whosoever will may be saved. 4. We believe in the necessity of the new birth, and that it is a moral change, produced by the Holy Spirit operating on the mind through the truth, without winch no one can see the kingdom of God. We believe that that faith alone which manifests itself in a Christian life, whose rule is continual resistance to sin and obedience to the commandments of God, is the faith that unites to Christ and embraces the promises. 5. We believe that the visible Church, the Ministry of the Word, the Christian Sabbath, and the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord's Supper, are divinely oppointed, and are binding on the followers of Christ until his coming. 6. We believe that there is a day appointed in which God will raise the dead, and judge the world; that the wicked shall go away into ever- lasting punishment, but the righteous into life eternal. 7. We are in substantial accord with the Declaration of Faith put forth by the Creed Commission appointed by the National Council of the Congregational Churches of the United States, and reported by them December 19, 1S83. We, as a church, receive and profess the foregoing articles of faith. As such we expect that the Pastor and other officers of the church will assent to them, and that they will be the constitutional ground for the administration of the church. We expect that the teaching of the pulpit and the Sunday-school will conform to them, that they will be the basis for the examination of candidates for the church, and the sub- stantial expression <>f the faith of the members. But we desire to administer this church under the rule, and in the spirit, of Christ, and to receive to membership in it, on confession of Him, those who, upon examination, give credible evidence of a new life, and of agreement with us in substance of doctrine. Hence we do not require, as a condition of such membership and confession, that all who apply, especially if they be young or of limited instruction, shall com- pletely understand or fully avow all these articles. III. — GOVERNMENT. The government of this church is vested in the body of believers who compose it. It is amenable to no other ecclesiastical body but only to the Head of the Church, which is Christ. All members in good standing are entitled to vote upon any measure that may come before it. 2. This church, while it controls its own affairs according to its un- derstanding of God's word, will yet recognize the expediency and privilege of the communion of churches, by seeking and extending that fellowship, sympathy, advice, and co-operation, which the law of Christ demands. It holds itself bound to respect the advice of mutual coun- cils, and to seek the promotion of love and peace with all churches of our Lord. IV. — MEMBERSHIP. 1. The qualifications for admission to this church are credible evi- dence of repentance of sin, and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and assent to the Confession of Faith and Covenant, as laid clown in the Form for Admission of Members. (See p. 12.) 2. Persons desirous of becoming members of tbis church upon con- fession of their faith, shall be examined by the Standing Committee of tbe church, as to their doctrinal sentiments and personal piety ; and, if approved by the Committee, they shall be propounded at least one week before presenting their names to the church for action thereon. If approved by a two thirds vote of the members presenl they shall be publicly received into fellowship. This shall not be construed to prevent any member of the church from being presenl at the examina- tion of candidates, or making suggestions with regard to them to the Standing Committee. 3. Members of other evangelical churches may be received to mem- bership by vote of the church, on presenting proper letters of dismission and recommendation, and by giving assent to our Covenant. It is expected that such persons will present their letters within one year after coining among us, unless there be valid reasons for delay. 4. Members of this church making change of residence are expected to request letters of dismission to some other church, which shall be granted to all in good standing. The neglect of this request for a year, without good reasons offered therefor, may be regarded as a sufficient ground for censure. If letters are not applied for within three years, no good reasons being given for the delay, anil the persons cannot be reached for purposes of Christian labor and discipline, the names .if such absent members shall no longer be reported by the church, but shall be borne upon a separate roll, ami they shall not be reinstated except after due explanation and a vote of the church. 4. Any person withdrawing from this church without asking for a letter of dismission, and uniting with another church, shall be consid- ered as having acted in a disorderly manner, and a minute to that effect shall be entered upon the records, and his name be dropped from the list of members. 5. If any member be convinced that he is not truly a Christian and shall request a dissolution of his connection with this church, if there be no scandal in his life requiring discipline, his request maybe granted by a simple vote declarative of the facts, which vote shall be publicly announced at the next communion season. 6. The members of this church are under sacred obligations to attend its regular Sabbath services, aud its stated meeting for special worship during the week, so far as they are able to do so, and to maintain family and private devotions ; they are expected to discountenance and abstain from all practices in business aud in amusements, in social and domestic 8 life, in eating and in drinking, which will either impair their own spiritual growth, or bring just reproach upon the Christian name. V. — CHILDREN OF THE CHURCH. Recognizing the right of individual judgment, we receive into fellow- ship of this church persons who may dissent from us on the subject of Infant Baptism. At the same time, we hold that the covenant of God extends not only to believers but to their children ; and hence that it is the privilege and duty of Christian parents to accept this covenant by dedicating their children to God in baptism, and that children so dedi- cated are brought into very close relations to the church, in that, by covenant obligation, they are the special subjects of religious influence, culture, and prayer. VI. — OFFICERS AND THEIR DUTIES. 1. The officers of this church shall be a Pastor, four Deacons, Su- perintendent of the Sunday-school, a Clerk, and a Treasurer, who may be the same person, and a Standing Committee of seven, of whom the Pas- tor, Deacons, and Superintendent of the Sunday-school shall be ex- officio members. 2. All officers shall be elected by ballot, and all, except the Pastor and Deacons, annually, and without public nomination, unless a com- mittee shall be appointed for that purpose. Vacancies may be filled at any regular meeting. 3. The Pastor, who shall become a member of the church, shall be its moderator except in such cases as when he may be a party in inter- est to church action, and he shall have control of the pulpit and the exercises of public and social worship, shall preach the Word, adminis- ter the Sacraments, and take the spiritual oversight of the flock. He shall hold his office without limitation of time. In his settlement the Church shall act by an ecclesiastical council, called in the usual manner;, and such council shall be mutually called by the pastor and church to act upon his dismission, whenever the pastor shall desire it, or the church shall so vote in a meeting notified on the preceding Sabbath for that purpose, provided that no such dismission shall take effect without at least three mouths' previous notice, except by his consent. 4. In case of the resignation or death of the Pastor, the church shall appoint two of its members as a committee for obtaining another pastor, and for the supplying the pulpit until one be obtained. This committee shall act with the committee appointed by the society for a like purpose. 5. The Deacons shall hold their office for four years, and shall be so chosen that one shall go out of office, and one be appointed each year. They shall aid the pastor in the administration of the ordinances of the church, making all necessary provision for the same, assist the pastor in the spiritual care of the congregation, and in his absence shall provide for the conducting of the church meetings. 6. The Superintendent of the Sunday-school shall take the care and oversight of the school, and preside at the meetings of the teachers. In the absence of any officer or teacher he shall supply a substitute, and use his best endeavors to promote the growth, welfare, and influence of the school. 7. The Clerk shall make a faithful record of the proceedings and acts of the church, which shall be submitted for approval at the regular meetings; he shall keep a register of the members of the church, with the date and manner of their reception, of their removal, of their bap- tism, and other similar particulars; he shall keep a list of all the child- ren baptized, with the names of both parents; he shall issue letters of dismission voted by the church, and attend to all other duties that us- ually pertain to this office. Be shall also present an annual report to the church, including a full statistical report for the year. 8. The Treasurer shall receive all moneys and contributions of the church, and pay them over as he shall be directed by the church ; he shall, in the absence of a pastor, see that the collections authorized by the church are taken up. He .shall make an annual report to the church of all receipts and disbursements. 9. The Standing Committee shall examine all candidates for admis- sion to the church, consult and advise with the pastor in regard to church work, attend to the discipline of the church, and consider all matters pertaining to religion in the place. VII. — THK SIN DAY-SCHOOL. The church shall have the charge and oversight of the Sunday-school ; shall prescribe for it all useful rules and regulations; shall contribute to the support of its library ; shall counsel and assist its officers, and encourage its members to work therein; and the pastor shall, whenever practicable, be present at its sessions, and give to all its departments his personal supervision. VIII. — DISCIPI.INK. 1. The spirit of the rule of discipline laid down in Matt. 18 : 15-17, Rom. 1G: 17, 1 Cor. 5: 11, 13, 2 Thess. 3: 6, 14, 15, and Titus 3: 10, 11, shall be our general guide. 10 2. In private offences, the offended one is, by a fratei'nal and pray- erful conference, to seek a spiritual healing, and so to gain the brother. Failing in this, let him take one or two more, and again strive to win him back, so as to avoid the necessity of a church trial. 3. In public offences, or difficult cases, it shall be the duty of the Standing Committee to proceed as in private offences. 4. In telling the case to the church the charges must be presented in writing. If the church vote to entertain the complaint, it shall then appoint a time for a hearing of the case, and summon the accused to be present, furnishing him a written copy of the charges, at least a week before the trial. In the case of a member who refuses longer to walk with the church, and expresses a desire to be set aside, the preferring of written charges may be waived. 5. Upon the trial the accused may call to his aid any member of the church, or, by permission, the member of a sister church. The confes- sion of the accused, or the testimony of two witnesses, or that which is fairly equivalent, shall be requisite for conviction. 6. If the Church shall find the accused guilty, it may, in its wisdom, admonish, suspend, withdraw watch and care, or expel him, and this shall require a two thirds vote of those present. Any act of extreme censure shall be publicly announced at the Communion of the Lord's Supper following. In cases of difficulty the advice and aid of a council may be sought. 7. In all cases of discipline it is to be understood that the spiritual reformation of the offender is the end in view, and so, on evidence of repentance, and a satisfactory confession, such persons shall be restored to good standing by vote of the church. See Art. IV, Sect. 5. IX. — MEETINGS. 1. The annual meeting shall be held on the Thursday following the last Sabbath in December, when the annual reports shall be presented, and the regular elections made. 2. Business may be transacted at any regular or special meeting of the church, called from the pulpit. 3. Meetings for public worship shall be held upon the Sabbath, and a weekly prayer and conference meeting at such time during the week as may be appointed by the church. Other religious meetings may be held at the discretion of the church or pastor. 4. The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper shall usually be administered on the first Sabbath in January, March, May, July, September and 11 November. Baptisms shall be administered at such times and places as the pastor and deacons shall designate. X. — CONTRIBUTIONS. Contributions shall be solicited in the congregation, at stated periods, for the leading objects of Christian beneficence, according toa schedule prepared from time to time by the Standing Committee and adopted by the church. This does not forbid the occasional presentation of special objects that maybe recommended by the pastor and standing Committee 2. Contributions for distinctively church purposes shall be taken at each Sacrament of the Lord's Supper. XI. — AMENDMENTS AND BY-LAWS. 1. The foregoing Principles and Regulations maybe altered by a two thirds vote of those present at a meeting, of which due notice -hall be given on the preceding Sabbath, with a statemenl of the proposed alteration, provided the change does not infringe upon the doctrines or organic principles of this church. All rules heretofore enacted, incon- M>teut with the preceding, are hereby repealed. 2. By-Laws may be enacted at any business meeting. FORM OF ADMISSION OF MEMBERS. The minister will begin by saying : The following persons [read their names], having given sat- isfactory evidence of Christian character, are now to be received to the membership of this church. The list of names being read, the Minister shall say : Jesus saitii : " If any man will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." " Come nnto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me : for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." " And the spirit and the bride say, come. And let him that heareth say, come. And let him that is athirst, come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely." "Whosoever, therefore, shall confess me before men, him will I confess, also, before my Father which is in heaven." " And the publican, standing afar off , would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, say- ing, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other." In the spirit of these Scriptures, and of the entire Word of God, those who are now for the first time publicly to make their confession, and pay their vows, will please rise : Dearly Beloved : Rejoicing in the knowledge of the forgiveness of sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, vou have come to confess Him before 13 men, and publicly to dedicate yourself to God. You have learned that before God all men are guilty, and that it is im- possible for any to obtain salvation through their own righte- ousness ; you have accepted the redemption purchased for you by Jesus Christ, and the promise of your justification by faith ; and you believe that the Holy Spirit has wrought in you that change of heart by which you are enabled to put your trust for salvation wholly in Christ, and to enter upon a new life. Believing that the Saviour has called you into his kingdom, and lias appointed you work to do, that He may bestow upon you more abundant blessings, } 7 ou desire, in grateful obedience, to join in the fellowship of His church, and to consecrate your- self to His service. In testimony that this is a true statement of your belief and desire, you will now joiu with me in the following CONFESSION OF FAITH. Candidates will join with the pastor in reading. I believe in God the Father, Maker of all things ; in His only begotton Son, Jesus Christ, our Redeemer and King ; in the Holy Ghost, the Comforter, ever present in the church to re- new and sanctify the soul. I believe in the sinfulness of our race, and the necessity of renewal by the Holy Spirit ; in the death of our Lord Jesus Christ for our sins ; in His resurrection from the dead ; His ascension, mediation, and intercession ; in His coming again to judge the quick and the dead, and to receive His followers to the glory of His Kingdom. I believe in the Holy Scriptures as the Word of God ; in the Church, the body of Christ ; in the Sacraments of Baptism, and the Lord's Supper ; in the communion of the Saints ; in the resurrection of the dead, and in the life of the world to come. To those baptized in infancy, the Minister will say : Do you, who in childhood were dedicated to God in Baptism 14 bv believing parents, now accept their act, with the obligations and privileges it involves, as your own, and declare your belief that the regeneration thereby symbolized has been wrought in you by the Holy Ghost? (Candidate answers, I do.) To those who have been baptized, the Minister will say : You who believe that your hearts have been renewed by the Holy Ghost, but who never have received the outward seal of the covenant, will now, upon this confession of your faith, re- ceive the ordinance of baptism. Baptism administered to such as have not received it. The Minister will read the names of those admitted by letter, with the churches from which they were dismissed, and requesting them to arise will say : — Beloved Friends : You have been recommended to our communion by the churches to which you have belonged, in the love of a common Master. "We welcome you to our joys and labors, trusting you will both receive comfort and strength, and impart the same to us. The Minister will then say : In the presence of God and this assembly, you, who now unite with us, do freely and cordially enter with us into COVENANT. Humbly forsaking and confessing your sins, and believing on the Lord Jesus with all your heart, you do now renounce the dominion of the world over you, aud consecrate yourselves to the service of God, receiving His Word as the rule of life. You solemnly covenant to study the peace, purity, and edification of this church ; to attend its services, and support its worship and ordinances ; to love and watch over its members as your brethren and sisters ; to receive from them, with a humble, teachable spirit, all needful care and admonition ; to consecrate your means to the Lord ; and to honor the Lord, as you may be able, 15 by an upright life. Do you so covenant? (Candidate an- swers, I do.) The membi rs ofthe church rise, and the Minister says : We then, the members of this church, affectionately receive you to our communion. We welcome you, in the name of Christ, to a part with us in the blessings of His covenant. As co-workers in His service and fellow soldiers of the cross, we pledge you our abiding sympathy, counsel, encouragement, love and prayers. We rejoice with you to-day, as we welcome you to Christian discipleship. There is joy in heaven in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth. And as each of you has taken the covenant of this church, so it is needful that each of us renew our vows with voice and heart, as we sing: — " I love thy kingdom Lord, [Tune, St. Thomas.] The house of thine abode, The church our blest Redeemer saved With His own precious blood. Beyond my highesl joy I prize her heavenly \v;iys, Hersweel communion, solemn vows, Her hymns of hive and praise." In token of our confidence and sincerity, take this hand of fellowship, and remember the word which the Scriptures saith : Here the Minister shall take each new member by the hand, in turn, repeating I Borne appropriate passage <>: Scripture. The church being seated, the Ministerwii] s») : And now, beloved in the Lord, ye are fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God, and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone. Fortius cause we bow our knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is 16 named, that he would grant you according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man ; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith ; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend, with all saints, what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height ; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowl- edge, that ye might be filled with the fullness of God. The Lord bless you and keep you : the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you : the Lord lift up the light of his countenance upon you, and give you peace. Now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with ex- ceeding joy, to the only wise God, our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. All sing : " Blest be the tie that binds [Tune, Boylston.'] Our hearts in Christian love ; The fellowship of kindred minds So like to that above." FORM FOR THE BAPTISM OF CHILDREN. " And Jesus took a child and set him in the midst of them : and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them, Verily. I say unto you, except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever, therefore, shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name, receiveth me; and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me." " For the promise is unto you. and to your children, and to all thai are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." "Then were there brought unto him little children, that he would put liis hands on them and pray. But when his disciples saw, they rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw. he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily, I say unto you, whoso- ever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little chil 1, shall in nowise enter therein. And lie took them up in his arms, and put his hands upon them, and blessed them." The Minister shall address the parents as follows : In presenting this child for baptism, you profess your faith in the covenant made by God with Abraham, ratified by Christ, 18 and perpetuated under the Christian dispensation. As Abra- ham, the father of the faithful, entered into covenant with God, and his seed after him, so do you now covenant with Him in the dedication of this child to His service. You hereby engage to be faithful to your parental relations ; to pray for and with this child ; to instruct him (her) in the doctrines and duties of our holy religion ; to set an example of Godliness before him (her) ; and to endeavor by all the means of divine appointment, relying upon the gracious influences of the Holy Spirit, to prepare him (her) for full admission to the visible church on earih, and the church triumphant in heaven. Do you thus promise ? The Minister shall baptize the child, using only Christian names, and saving: , I baptize thee into the name of the Father, and of the Sou, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. COVENANT OF THE CHURCH. Then doth this church [members rise] recognize this your child as its own foster child, and covenant to pray for it, watch over it, and care for it in spiritual things ; and whenever, by the power of God, it shall come to acknowledge and confirm this covenant, to welcome it to full communion in the ordinances of Christ's house, and in all the privilege of believers. Then follows the baptismal prayer, and benediction. CHRONOLOGICAL CATALOGUE OF OFFICERS. Daniel Emerson, F.t.i Smith, David Psbbt, James Aiken, Matthew I>. Gordon, Pliny B Day, d. d., James I.aikd.
