GENERAL CATALOGUE / L^A^nSTE THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY 1828-1881. CINCINNATI : Elm Street Printing Coniiiany. iSSi. HEC. M'^'Ml PREFAC4JHB0L0GIC&L^. ■ The collection of material for this catalogue began some three years ago. Tlie difficulty of obtaining information, especially in regard to the members of early classes, was greater than was anticipated, and the delay in publication is due chiefly to this cause. The items of information sought were the following: (i) name in full; (2) place and date of birth; (3) college course; (4) theological course; (5) date of ordination and the ordaining body; (6) subsecj^uent occupation with present address; (7) honorary degrees. It is believed that the abbreviations used, need no explanation. Where two or more towns mentioned in succession are in the same State, the name of the State is given with the first only. The name of a town in italics, desig- nates the present address of the person concerned. The fact that the work was so long in preparation, will explain and perhaps excuse some inequalities. The catalogue is intended to contain the names of those connected with the Theological Seminary only. As is well known, a literary or academic department was opened in November, 1829, and continued some years; the regular theological class being first organized in 1833. The names of students in the literary department can not now be ascer- tained. The following are known to have been Principals of that depart- ment : Rev. Geo. C. Beckwith, . . 182 7-1 830. Rev. Lewis D. Howell, . . 1 830-1 833. Rev. Nath. L. Folsom, . . 1833-183 5. Rev. John Morgan, . . 1835. The Faculty desire to keep on record the changes of address of all former students, as well as all memorabilia that bear upon the history of the Institution. Copies of books or pamphlets published by the Alumni, memorial addresses and other publications bearing upon the history of the Church in this region, will be welcomed to the library. The compiler takes this opportunity to thank many college professors and others to whom he has applied for information. The clerical labor of the compilation has been lightened by the assistance of his wife, so that it has been doubly a labor of love. Corrections and additions to the catalogue will be gratefully received and may be sent to Prof. Henry P. Smith, Lane Theological Seminary, Cincinnati, O. Lane, February 21, 1881. TRUSTEES.
