SELDEN, Jr., Esq., CHESTER BUCKLEY, Esq., HERLEHIGH HASKELL, Esq., JAMES B. HOSMER, Esq. REPORT. The Trustees of the Theological Institute of Connecti- cut would present to the Pastoral Union their Ninth Annual Report, with gratitude to the Giver of all good, and an acknowledgement of entire dependence upon him for the supply of future wants. Through the year that is past the lives of the President, Professors, Trustees and Students have been spared. One of our number, whose case was referred to in our last report, still lingers under a painful disease, with undimin- ished interest in our enterprise which is yet favored with his counsels and prayers. From the catalogue recently published it appears, that the whole number who have entered the Institute, is one hundred and eleven ; of whom ninety-four had been grad- uated at some college, and eleven others had enjoyed for a longer or shorter period, the advantages of collegiate in- struction. Of the sixty-two, who have completed their course of studies here, forty-five have become settled pastors, and fourteen are either missionaries or stated supplies. It is gratifying to learn from a competent wit- ness in a neighboring state that, " The more our Institution is known through its students and preachers and other- ways, the more prejudice is overcome, and is succeeded by friendship and confidence. The preachers from our Institute are generally distinguished for doctrinal instruc- tion and devotedness to their appropriate work." The Prudential Committee report, "That in the dis- charge of their duties regarding the expenditure of funds, they are obliged to practice the most rigid economy, and to defer making improvements which the board have authorized." Soon after the last meeting of the Board, the Committee renewed the contract with Dr. Tenney to serve as agent for procuring funds. He visited many churches making collections on old subscriptions, and has obtained new 4 subscriptions to the amount of about one thousand dollars. Although from ill health and other causes Dr. Tenney has been embarrassed in his labors, yet a kind Providence has furnished supplies sufficient to meet the current expenses of the Institute, and a small sum has been applied to diminish our debt. As many subscriptions have this year expired, the time has come for vigorous exertion to meet our annual expenditures. During the last year about one hundred volumes have been added to the Library, chiefly through the instrumen- tality of Dr. Tenney. The garden attached to the Institute affords proof of having been cultivated with good taste and healthful in- dustry. The Committee appointed to attend the annual exami- nation of the students assure us of their satisfaction with what they witnessed in the discharge of their duty. Once more commending this sacred Institution to Him whose gracious presence was evidently enjoyed by those who met to consult respecting its establishment and under whose smiles it has advanced thus far, we hope that our endeavors will be accompanied with the prayers and cooperation of the pastors from whom our trust is derived. HASKELL, Treasurer. 8 The following acknowledgment comprises a description of aid to our common cause, which is appropriated to the objects specified without passing through the hands of the Treas- urer, and consequently is not credited in his report. Donations in money have been received by Professor Thompson in aid of indigent students from Ladies in Hartford ; the Female Friendly Society North Coven- try ; Rev. G. A. Calhoun North Coventry ; Mrs. E. But- ler Northampton, Mass. ; Ladies Sewing Society, and other friends in East Windsor ; and Rev. D. L. Parmilee Litchfield. These contributions are applied to reduce the expense of board. Enough has been received the last five years to enable all who desired assistance to obtain board for one dollar a week. It is believed that a little attention to this branch of benevolence among our friends will secure very important relief to those members of the Institute whose resources have been slender from the commencement of their preparation for the ministry, and some of whom are now especially embarrassed by the partial failure of ap- propriations on which they had been accustomed to rely. Articles of wearing apparel and bedding for the use of students have been received by Mrs. Thompson, from Ladies in Hartford ; The Female Friendly Society, North Coventry ; and Rev. Mr. Yale of New Hartford. Donations of books to the Library have been made by Rev. D. G. Sprague, Westchester ; Rev. Thomas Snell, D. D. Brcokfield, Mass. ; Rev. A. Nettleton, D. D. East Windsor; Rev. A. Cobb, Taunton, Mass.; Rev. Thomas, Smyth, Charleston, S. C. ; Robert Carter, New York ; Rev. D. Carpenter, Foxboro, Mass. ; Rev. C. J. Ten- ney, Northampton, Mass. ; Mrs. Fpote, Boston, Mass. ; Secretaries and Treasurer of the A. B. C. F. M. ; American Doctrinal Tract Society. Several books of considerable value have been given,, the names of whose donors have not yet reached the Librarian.
