REvELL CoMPpANy Prefatory Note In the following pages an effort is made to present to the reader, in as instructive and intel- ligible a manner as possible, the whole of the direct teaching of Scripture regarding the Person and Work of the Holy Spirit. With the excep- tion of two or three passages, the meaning of which is doubtful, every passage in which the Holy Spirit is expressly mentioned has been in- cluded. Except in a few cases, where the alter- ation in reading is important, the Authorized Version has been followed. May He of whose Person and Work these pages speak, bless the reading of them to all into whose hands they come. GriGoM: NoTTING HI11, LONDON, 7th July, 1898. Preface THE Person and Work of the Holy Spirit are probably receiving more thoughtful and devout attention to-day, than at any time since Pente- cost. The rarest spirits of the church are bend- ing their noblest powers to elucidate the mystery, that enshrouds His operations, and to make all men see the laws of His procedure. And it is well: not for the gratification of our curiosity, but that we may be able to pour the molten metal of our obedience into the mould of law; and comply with those first principles, on which all healthy fellowship with God’s Spirit must proceed. How greatly the race is indebted to men of science, for their careful observation of the prin- ciples on which great natural forces operate! These have been in existence from creation, but unavailed of, because man had not penetrated their secret. The electric current, for instance, was as potent in Paradise, as in any modern city, but of no avail to lessen human labor, because no one had studied or systematized the science of its working. Similarly through all the dark ages there was as much of the Spirit in the church, as at Pentecost; but His gracious power was re- strained, since men were largely ignorant of, and indifferent to its laws. Thank God, that the time of apathy has passed it, as modern literature bears witness. q Preface In the front rank of other books published on this great theme, the present claims special notice, not only for its author’s sake, but because it con- tains, in scripture language, the important princi- ples on the observance of which depends the communion or fellowship of the human spirit with the Divine. That this little book may en- able many to live in that co-partnership with the Holy Spirit for the glory of Christ, and the bless- ing of men, is my earnest desire. F. B. MEYER. CHAPTER I THE PERSONALITY OF THE SPIRIT In studying the doctrine of the Spirit, the first thing to be grasped is His personality. The chief doctrine of Christianity is its doctrine of God, and the Christian doctrine of God is the doctrine of the Trinity. God has revealed Himself as one God in Three Persons, and of these Persons, the third is the Holy Ghost. That He is a Person is proved by these considerations :— _ I, He is associated with the Father and with the _ Son in the One Name of God. (1.) Ln the Baptismal Formula. Matt. xxviii. 18, 19.—And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heayen and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. (2.) Ln the Apostolic Benediction. 2 Cor. xiii. 14.—-The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. II. He possesses attributes belonging only to per- sons. / (1.) Understanding and Knowledge. t Cor. ii. g-11.—Eye hath not seen, nor ear II The Things of the Spirit heard, neither have any entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him. But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the Spirit search- eth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the _ spirit of a man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. (2.) Love. Rom. xv. 30.—Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me. (3. Azl7. r Cor. xii. 11.—But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as He will. III. He performs actions that can only be per- formed by a person. ((1.) He teaches. John xvi. 13, 14. _Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for He shall receive of Mine, and shall shew it unto you. (2.) He directs. Acts vill. 29.—Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. And similarly in nearly 60 passages in the Old Testament, and in too passages in the New. I2 The Things of the Spirit IV. He is the Object of Actions which can only be done to a Person. (1.) He can be hed against. Acts v. 3.—But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land ? (2.) He can be tempted. Acts v. g.—Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. (3.) He can be reststed. Acts. vil. 51.—Ye _ stiff-necked and uncir- cumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. Heb. x. 29.—Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, where- with he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? (4.) He can be grieved. Eph. iv. 30.—And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 1 Thess. v. 19.—Quench not the Spirit. (5.) He can be vexed. Isa. lxili. 10.—They rebelled, and vexed His Holy Spirit. (6.) He can be blasphemed. Matt. xii. 31, 32.—Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be for- given unto men: but the blasphemy against the aS The Things of the Spirit Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. Mark iii. 29.—But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation. Luke xii. 10..-Whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. 14 CHAPTER II THE DEITY OF THE SPIRIT IN connection with the doctrine of the Spirit, the second thing to be grasped is His Deity. This is taught by the following passages :— I He is expressly called God. Acts. v. 3, 4.—Why hath Satan filled thy heart to lie to the Holy Ghost? . . . Why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. 2 Cor. ili, 17,18.—Now the Lord is that Spirit : and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Lord, the Spirit. II. Attributes are ascribed to Him which belong to God alone. (1.) Eternity. Heb. ix. 14.—How much more shall the blood of Christ, who, through the Eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living and true God. (2.) Omnipresence. Psa. cxxxix. 7.—Whither shall I go from Thy Spirit? or whither shall I flee from Thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, Thou art there, if I make my bed in hell, behold Thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there zs The Things of the Spirit shall Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold me. (3.) Omntpotence. Micah ui. 8.—Truly I am full of power by the Spirit of the Lord, and of judgment of might. (4.) Omnisctence. Isa. xl. 13.—Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being His Counsellor hath taught Him? 1 Cor. il. 10, 11.—The Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. (5.) Soreknowledge. Acts 1. 16.—Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before con- cerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. Acts xi. 27, 28..And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great death throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Ceesar. (6.) Sovereignty over the Church. Acts xili. 2, 3.—As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. Rey. ii. 7.—He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. and in six other places in Revelation. 16 CHAPTER III THE NAMES AND TITLES OF THE HOLY GHOST In the Scripture we do not find that distinction between nominal and real, which is so familiar to us in the usage of ordinary life. What any- thing is in name, that it is in reality. The supreme example of this is found in the names of God. What God calls Himself is a revelation of what He is. Therefore, in the names of the Holy Spirit we have a rich revelation of His character and work. Section Lirst Old Testament Names and Titles. These passages form five groups. I. Send. From the first group we learn that God SENDS His Spirit to men. This word emphasizes the Divine AUTHORITY. Psa. civ. 30.—Thou sendest forth Thy Spirit, they are created, and Thou renewest the face of the earth. Isa. xlvili. 16. (R. V.)—Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I; and now the Lord God hath sent me, and His Spirit. Zech. vii. 12.—Yet they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in His Spirit by the former prophets. 1 Tim. iv. 1.—Now the Spirit speaketh ex- pressly, that in the latter times some shall depart @ from the faith giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils. Heb. iil. 7.—Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith), To-day, if ye will hear His voice, Harden not your hearts. Heb. ix. 8.—The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing. 1 Pet. 1. ro-12._Of which salvation the proph- ets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you. Searching what, or what manner of time 31 f y WX ASuUt Lan The Things of the Spirit the Spirit of Christ which was in them did sig- nify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto ourselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. ie 2° PEt; (20, 21.—Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private inter- pretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man; but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. IX, And the Scripture as a whole. Eph. vi. 17.—And take the helmet of salva- tion, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 2 Tim. iii. 16.—All scripture is given by in- spiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be per- fect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. 1 Cor. 11. g-16.—But as it is written, eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him. But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man that is in him, even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are 32 The Things of the Spirit freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth ; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spirit- ually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ. Section Third Conviction There is His ministry in connection with the Conviction of Men. Gen. vi. 3.—And the Lord said, My Spirit shall not always strive with man. John xvi, 7-11.—Nevertheless, I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away ; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart I will send Him unto you. And when He is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness and of judgment; of sin, because they believe not on Me ; of righteousness, because I go to My Father, and ye see me no more; of judgment, because the Prince of this world is judged. Heb. vi. 4-6.—For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers .of the world to come. If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance. 33 The Things of the Spirit Section Fourth Regeneration There is His ministry in connection with the Regeneration of Men. ‘This is twofold. I He comes to quicken and give life. John iu, 1~8.—There was a man of the Phari- sees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto Him, Rabbi, we know that Thou art a teacher come from God ; for no man can do these miracles that Thou doest, except God be withhim. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he can- not see the Kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto Him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. ‘The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh and whither it goeth; so is every one that is born of the Spirit. | John i. 12, 13.—But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name, which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. John vi. 63.—It is the Spirit that quickeneth ; the flesh profiteth nothing ; the words that Ispeak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. 34 The Things of the Spirit Eph. ii. r-7.—And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins, wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the chil- dren of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love, wherewith He loved us even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ (by grace ye are saved); and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might shew the exceeding riches of His grace in His kind- ness toward us through Christ Jesus. Gal. iv. 29.—But as then, he that was born after the flesh persecuted Him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. Titus ill. 5.—He saved us by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost, which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour. t John iii. 9.—Whosoever is born of Ged doth not commit sin ; for His seed remaineth in him ; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. r John v. 1~4.—Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God; and every one that loveth Him that begat, loveth Him also that is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments ; and His commandments are not grievous. For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world ; 35 The Things of the Spirit and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Il. He comes to dwell in those whom He has quickened. Rom. viii. 9.—But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you. 1 Cor. iii. 16.—Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwell- eth in you. | 2 Tim. i. 14.—That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us. . LVote. In all in whom He dwells He is meant to dwell fully. Eph. v. 18.—Be not drunk with wine wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit. Section Fifth Sanctification There is His Ministry in connection with the Sanctification and Comfort of Believers. (1.) On believers He ts to rest. 1 Pet. iv. 14.—If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the Spirit of Glory and of God resteth upon you. (2.) Over believers He ts to yearn. James iv..5.—The Spirit whom He made to dwell in us longeth jealously over us. (3.) He reveals the love of God. Rom. v. 5.—And hope maketh not ashamed ; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. 36 The Things of the Spirit (4.) He bears witness to sonship. Rom. viii. 14-17.—-For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adop- tion, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God; and if children, then heirs ; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christss5if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together. (5.) He helps in prayer. Rom. viii. 26, 27.—Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And He that search- eth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because He maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Gal. iv. 6.—And because ye are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. (6.) He delivers from the power of sin. Rom. viii. 2.—For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. Gal. v. 16-18.—This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye may not do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. (7.) He supplies the basis for a holy life. 2 Thess, ii. 13, 14. But we are bound to give 37 The Things of the Spirit thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the begin- ning chosen you to salvation in sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth. Whereunto He called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Pet. i. 2.—Elect according to the foreknowl- edge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you and peace be multiplied. Rom. xv. 15, 16.—Nevertheless, brethren, I have written the more boldly unto you in some sort, as putting you in mind, because of the grace that is given to Me of God, that I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, minister- ing the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost. (8.) He bestows knowledge. John xiv. 26.—But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My Name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. John xvi. 13.—Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak : and He will show you things to come. 1 Cor. ii. 12, 13.-Now we have received, not the spirit of the world but the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth ; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 38 The Things of the Spirit 1 John ii. 20, 27.—But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. But the anointing which ye have received of Him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teach- eth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him. (9.) Joy, Peace, Hope and Love. Rom. xv. 13.—Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Col. i. 8.—Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit. 1 Thess. 1. 6.—And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost. (10.) And every spiritual grace. Gal. v. 22, 23.—But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, good- ness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (11.) He seals the believer. Eph. iv. 30.—And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. (12.) He bears witness of Christ. John xv. 26, 27.—But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceed- eth from the Father, He shall testify of Me: and ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with Me from the beginning. 1 Cor. xii. 3.—Wherefore I give you to under- stand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God ae The Things of the Spirit calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. 1 John iv. 2.—Hereby know ye the Spirit of God; Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is of God. 1 John v. 6.—It is the Spirit that beareth wit- ness, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that bear witness, the Spirit, the water, and the blood: and the three agree in one. (13.) He reveals and glorifies Christ. John xvi. 14, 15.—He shall glorify Me: for He shall receive of Mine, and shall shew it unto you, All things that the Father hath are Mine: therefore, said I, that He shall take of Mine, and shall shew it unto you. (14.) He transforms us into the tmage of Christ. Rom. vill. 29.—For whom did He foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 2 Cor. 111. 18.—But we all, with open face be- _holding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 1 John iii. 2.—Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall ap- pear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is. The Spirit CoMEs upon believers. Matt. iil. 16,17.—And Jesus, when He was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon Him: And lo a voice from heaven saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Mark 1. ro.—And straightway coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him. Luke i. 22.-And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him. John i. 32, 33.—I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon Him. And I knew Him not: but He that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto. me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, the same is He which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. Acts i. 8.—But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto Me. Acts li. 1-4.—-And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to 44 The Things of the Spirit speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts xix. 6.—And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them ; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. (2.) The Spirit Besrows GirTs for work. 1 Cor. xii. 1-13.—Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed : and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of oper- ations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom ; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit ; to another the working of miracles ; to another proph- ecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues ; to another the interpreta- tion of tongues; But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as He will. For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 45 The Things of the Spirit (3.) The Spirit apporns to work. Acts xiil. 1-4.—-Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers ; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barna- bas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus. Acts. xx. 28.—Take heed therefore unto your- selves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which He hath purchased with His own blood. (4.) The Spirit GumpEs to work. Acts. vili. 29, 39, 40.—Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to ‘this chariot. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. But Philip was found at Azotus : and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Ceesarea. Acts x. 19, 20.—-While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee. Arise therefore, and get thee down, and ‘go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them. Compare. Acts xi. 11, 12.—And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house 46 The Things of the Spirit where I was, sent from Caesarea unto me. Acts xvi. 6-8.—Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, after they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. Rev. xvil. 3.—So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness; and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. Rev. xxi. 1o.—And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descend- ing out of heaven from God. (5.) Helps in work. Matt. x. 19, 20.—-But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak : for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you. Luke xii. 11, 12.—And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye 47 The Things of the Spirit shall answer, or what ye shall say: For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. John vii. 37~-39.—In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink. Acts vi. 9, 10.—Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spake. Rom. xv. 18, 19.—For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed, through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto IIlyr- icum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. 48 The Things of the Spirit t Cor. ii. 2~-5.—For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. And I was with you in weak- ness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with en- ticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstra- tion of the Spirit and of power: that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in . the power of God. 1 Cor. xiv. 2._For He that speaketh in an un- known tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth Him; howbeit in the Spirit He speaketh mysteries, 1 Thess. i. 5.—For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance ; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. 2 Cor. ili. 5, 6.—Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; Who also hath made usable ministers of the New Testament; not of - the letter, but of the Spirit: for the letter killeth, but the Spirit giveth life. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whoso- ever will, let him take the water of life freely. 50 CHAPTER VI THE RELATION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT TO OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST Section First Birth Jesus Christ was born of the Spirit. Matt. 1. 18-25.—-Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as His mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came to- gether, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public ex- ample, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth ason, and thou shalt call His name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins. -Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being inter- preted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called His name JESUS. Luke i. 26-38.—-And in the sixth month the 5! The Things of the Spirit angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin, espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary; and the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favor with God ; and, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call His name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest ; and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father David, and He shall reign over the house of Jacob for- ever, and of His kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of .the Highest shall overshadow thee; therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, thy cousin Elizabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren; for with God noth- ing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me ac- cording to Thy word. And the angel departed from her. Section Second Baptism Jesus Christ was anointed with the Spirit. Matt. 11. 13-17.—Then cometh Jesus from’ 52 — = — The Things of the Spirit Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him; but John forbade Him, saying, I have need to be baptized of Thee, and comest Thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now; for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered Him. And Jesus, when He was baptized, went up straightway out of the water; and lo, the heavens were opened unto Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon Him. And, lo, a voice from heaven saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. John i. 32~-34.—-And John bare record, say- ing, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon Him and I knew Him not; but He that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, the same is He which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw and bare record that this is the Son of God. Luke iv. 18, 19.—The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath anointed me to 53 The Things of the Spirit preach the gospel to the poor! Acts i. 2.—Until the day in which He was taken up, after that He, through the Holy Ghost, had given commandments unto the apostles whom He had chosen. Section Fifth Death Through the Spirit Jesus Christ offered Himself to God. Section Sixth Resurrection By the Spirit, Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. t Pet. iii. 18.—-For Christ also hath once suf- fered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit. Rom. i. 4.—And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holi- ness, by the resurrection from the dead. Section Seventh The Outpouring of the Spirit Being raised from the dead, He receives the Spirit, and with the Spirit baptizes His. people. 55 The Things of the Spirit Acts li. 32, 33.—This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we are all witnesses. Therefore be- ing by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, He hath shed forth this, which we now see and hear. John iii. 3~8.—Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a -man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto Him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the king- dom‘of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. ‘The wind bloweth where it list- eth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. c8 The Things of the Spirit John i. 12, 13.—But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. James i. 18.—-Of His own will begat He us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first-fruits of His creatures. r Pet. i. 23.—Being born again, not of cor- ruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever. Section Second ~ The Baptism of the Spirit In the sphere of the Spirit the believer is bap- tized. Matt. iii. 11.—I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but He that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire. Mark i. 8.—I indeed have baptized you with water: but He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. Luke iii. 16.—John answered, saying unto them_all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: He shall bap- tize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire. Acts i. 5.—For John truly baptized with water ; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Acts viii. 15-17.—Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost. (For as yet He was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their LE Ey The Things of the Spirit hands on them, and they received the Holy Chost. Acts x. 44-48.—While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man for- bid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. Acts x1. 15, 16..-And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the be- ginning. ‘Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that He said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Acts xix. 6.—And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on ‘them; and they spake with tongues, and prophe- sied. Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers. of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. Fellowship. Rom. viii. 15, 26, 27.—For ye have not re- ceived the spirit of bondage again to fear ; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit Him- self maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And He that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because He maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Gal. iv. 6.—And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Jude 20, 21.—But ye, beloved, building up 64 The Things of the Spirit yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost. Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. Section Sixth The Indwelling of the Spirit | In the sphere of the Spirit the believer become a habitation of God, and is sealed unto the day of redemption. Eph. ii. 22.—In whom ye also are builded to- gether for an habitation of God through the Spirit. t Cor. iii. 16, 17.—Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy ; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 1 Cor. vi. 19, 20.—What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. John xiv. 23.—Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love Me, he will keep My words and My Father will love him: and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 2 Cor. vi. 16.—And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in €5 The Things of the Spirit whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory. Eph. iv. 30.—And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. SECOND PRINCIPLE The Rule WITHIN THE SPIRITUAL SPHERE, THE SPIRIT IS THE DIRECTOR, AND HIS WILL THE RULE OF THE BELIEVER’S LIFE Section First The Reception of the Spirit This Spirit he is to receive as the Gift of God. (1.) Only believers can receive Him. John xiv. 17.—The Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him. Jude 17--19.—But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ ; how that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. These be they who separate themselves sensual, having not the Spirit. 1 Cor. ii. 14.—The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God. r John iv. 6.—We are of God: he that know- eth God heareth us; he that is not of God hear- eth not us. Hereby know we the Spirit of truth, and the Spirit of error. 66 The Things of the Spirit (2.) Believers receive Him from Christ. John xx, 22.—-He breathed on them, and said unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost. Acts il. 33.—Having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost He hath shed forth this. (3-) Lhe conditions of reception are :— i. Repentance. Acts. ii. 37-39.—Now when they heard this they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? ‘Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Te bath: John vii. 38, 39.—He that believeth on Me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this He spake of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive; for the Holy Ghost was not yet given, because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) Gal. 11. 2~-5.—This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. He there- fore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith P Gal. iii. 13,14.—Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: 67 The Things of the Spirit for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. lil, Prayer. Acts. iv. 31.—And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together ; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the Word of God with boldness. . Luke xi. 13.—If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children; how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him? Acts viii. 15.—Who when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost. iv. Obedience. Acts v. 32. And we are His witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey Him. v. But He cannot be obtained for money. Acts viii. 18-23.—And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money. Saying, Give me also this power, that on whom- soever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Re- pent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. For I perceive that thou 68 The Things of the Spirit art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. (4.) The reception of Him ts necessary to a fully developed spiritual life. Acts viii. 14-17.—Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the Word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (for as yet He was fallen upon none of them; only they had been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. Acts xix. 1-6.—And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus ; and finding certain disciples, he said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye be- lieved? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on Him which should come after Him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them the Holy Ghost came upon them, and they spake with tongues and prophesied. Second Section The Walk in the Spirit By the Spirit he is to be led and guided, and in the Spirit he is to walk. 69 The Things of the Spirit Psa. cxliii. 10.—Teach me to do Thy will; for Thou art my God; Thy Spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness. Isa. lxiii. 14.—The Spirit of the Lord caused him to rest ; so didst Thou lead Thy people. Rom. vill. 1-27.—There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh ; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death ; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, _ neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin ; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you. There- fore, brethren, we are debtors not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die; but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live, For 7O The Things of the Spirit as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear ; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit Himself beareth wit- ness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. And if children, then heirs ; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together. .. . Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for us as we ought: but the Spirit Himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And He that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because He maketh intercession for the saints ac- cording to the will of God. Gal. v. 16-26.—This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye may not do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lascivious- ness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live 71 The Things of the Spirit in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. Phil. iii. 3.—For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the Spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. Luke il. 25~30.—And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for Him after the custom of the law, then took he Him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, according to Thy word: For mine eyes have seen Thy salvation. Acts 1x. 31.—Then had the churches rest throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied. Acts xx. 22, 23.-And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there: Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me. 2 Cor. vi. 3-6.—Giving no offence in any- thing, that the ministry be not blamed: But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessi- ties, in distresses . . . in the Holy Ghost, in love unfeigned. 2 Cor. xii. 18.—I desired Titus, and with him 72 The Things of the Spirit I sent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in the same Spirit? walked we not in the same steps? Gal. v. 5.—For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. Eph. iv. 1-6.—I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vo- cation wherewith ye are called. With all lowli- ness and meekness, with long-suffering, forbear- ing one another in love; endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling: one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. 1 Pet. iv. 6.—For this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh but live according to God in the Spirit. ‘EHIRDZPRINGIPLE The Power WITHIN THE SPIRITUAL SPHERE, THE SPIRIT IS THE SOURCE OF THE BELIEVER’S POWER Micah ii. 7.—Is the Spirit of the Lord strait- ened ? Section First By the Spirit he lays hold of personal blessing for himself. Deliverance. Rom. vii. 2.For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. Rom. viii. 13.—For if ye live after the flesh, 73 The Things of the Spirit ye shall die; but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. Obedience. 1 Pet. i. 22.—Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit into unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently. Knowledge of love of Christ. Eph. ili. 14-19.—For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened in the might by His Spirit in the inner man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height ; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowl- edge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.
