It seems to have ppened very shortly before the death of Herod the sat. Herod died in the 750th year from the building Rome, i.e. four years before the usual starting point Christian chronology, so that we are forced to the clusion that our Lord was born B.C. 4, or according jome, alittleearlier. . . . Itis also agreed, that .). 26 was the beginning of John the Baptist’s work, i'l consequently of the Lord’s Ministry, and that His ith and resurrection must have taken place in A.D. 2 30—[ Oxford Bible, S.S. Teachers’ Edition. 7 INTRODUCTION One of the most remarkable testimonies — the authenticity of the scriptural record of Saviour’s words is found in the very wor) themselves: clear, explicit, discriminating, viti| simple, strong, sympathetic, descriptive—the words surpass all other utterances of literature The personal experiences of Jesus Christ } lated by the gospel writers in themselves reve inspired comprehension and understanding, b the very words of Jesus even more evidence! very deity. Surely, no man ever spake as spake. This Man who was God spoke ¥ Ww authority and “not as the scribes.” | This collection of the words 6f Jesus can be called a little book. Small in size, it immense in influence. It should be in the hat of all Christians and should be universally ¢ tributed. Until recently I did not Cae ‘that this. « lection of our Saviour’s writings had thus br published, and in so usable form. More migl| than all arguments, sermons, or expositic these words will speak for themselves to heart, and his very words shall “not return him void.” The Bible sometimes seems so large ani ec plete to those who have not known its v a ,. reasures that they fear to open and read it. these words of Jesus himself will gain an en- france into the heart and life of all who read them and make a place for all the gospel tory, and later the entire world. They seem 0 open the door to the heart, and when the eart is once opened to God, he comes in to fill he whole life. Through these ‘sentences “of Jesus we may ‘ave the experiences of those who walked with ‘im to Emmaus, and our hearts will burn ithin us as he talks with us in the way.
