INVOCATION { The Minister, having entered the water, and facing the Congregation, may appropriately open the Bap- tismal Service with this Invocation In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. ScrIPTURE LESSON § One or more of the following passages should be read Mark 1:2, 4, 5, 9-11 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, Be- hold I send my messenger before thy face, _ John came, who baptized in the wil- derness and preached the baptism of repent- ance unto remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the country of Judea and all they of Jerusalem; and they were bap- tized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. And it came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in the Jordan. And straightway coming up out 84 Baptismal Serbice 8 D oO of the water, he saw the heavens rent asun- der, and the Spirit as a dove descending upon him: and a voice came out of the heavens, Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I am well pleased. Matthew 3:13-17 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan unto John to be baptized of him. But John would have hindered him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? But Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all mghteousness. Then he suffered him. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway from the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him; and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. John 3:22, 23 After these things came Jesus and his disciples unto the land of Judea; and there he tarried with them and baptized. And John also was baptizing in Enon, near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. Acts 8:35-38 (inc. marg.) _And Philip opened his mouth, and _be- ginning from this Scripture, preached unto 86 Baptismal Serbice him Jesus. And as they went on the way, they came unto a certain water; and the eunuch saith, Behold, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thy heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. Romans 6:3-11 Or are ye ignorant that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection; knowing this, that our old man was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be done away, that so we should no longer be in bondage to sin; for he that hath died is justified from sin. But if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him; knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death no more hath dominion over him. For the death that he died, he died unto sin once: but the life that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Even so, reckon ye also Baptismal Service 87 yourselves to be dead unto sin, but alive unto God in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26-28 For ye are all sons of God, through faith, in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ, did put on Christ. There can be neither Jew nor Greek, there can be neither bond nor free, there can be no male and female; for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. Acts 2:38, 39 Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call unto him. I Peter 3:20-22 The longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was preparing, wherein few, that is eight souls, were saved through water: which also after a true like- ness, doth now save you, even baptism, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the interrogation of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ; who is on the right hand of God, having gone into heaven; angels and authorities and powers being made subject to him. Baptismal Herbice Tuer BAPTISMAL PRAYER | The Minister may then offer prayer for the person or persons to be baptized, as follows O God, who by thy Spirit hast moved the heart of this our brother to renounce the life of this world and cleave unto thy Son Jesus Christ; grant, we beseech thee, that henceforth his life may be full of the riches of thy grace. Give him continual repent- ance for his sin, and that forgiveness which thou dost so gladly offer to mankind at such cost to thyself. When he shall be tempted, be thou near and endue him with thy strength and righteousness. Lift the glorious ideal of thy Kingdom before his eyes, and lead him to consecrate himself to its achievement. May he be a faith- ful witness [or faithful witnesses] for thee among the children of men. And may he ever grow more and more in the knowl- — edge and understanding of Jesus Christ his Lord, so that he may know what is the hope of his calling and the riches of the glory of his inheritance in Christ Jesus. Send out thy light and thy truth that they may lead him through all the dark places of this life, until he come in sight of the shining lights of his eternal home. And when the journey is over, the course is finished, and the fight is fought, receive thou him with the crown of-victory and the welcome of eternal love. And sanctify to all here present, we be- Baptismal Serbice 89 seech thee, the lesson of this holy symbol of baptism, whereby we declare our un- breakable union with Him who died for all, that we who live should no longer live unto ourselves, but unto Him who for our sakes died and rose again, even Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen. Tue Baptism q At this point let the candidate enter the water. and be received by the Minster. If there be a number of candidates to be baptized, the customary order 1s, that the younger shall precede the older, and women shall precede men. When the candidate has gone down into the water the Minister shall ask for his profession of faith Minister: My brother N., dost thou be- lieve on the Lord Jesus Christ? Candidate: I do. Minister: On this confession of thy faith, I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. q Let the Minister then baptize the candidate. As he raises the baptized out of the water, let him say these words of blessing, in such a manner as to be audible to the baptized person only The Lord bless thee and keep thee; The Lord make his face to shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee; The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee and give thee peace. { When all the candidates have been baptized, and have left the place of baptism, let the Minister lift his right hand toward heaven, saying 90 Baptismal Serbice Lord, what thou didst command is done; and yet there is room! PRAYER | Before leaving the baptistry, the Minister may suit- ably offer the following prayer for st and those present Grant, O Lord, that as we are baptized into the death of thy blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ, so by continual mortifying our corrupt affections we may be buried with him; and that through the grave, and gate of death, we may pass to our joyful resurrection; for his merits, who died, and was buried, and rose again, for us, Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. BENEDICTION (lf the service is to conclude at this point, this Bene- diction may appropriately be used Now the God of peace, who brought again from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep, with the blood of an eternal cove- nant, even our Lord Jesus, make you per- fect in every good thing to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen. SILENT PRAYER An Order for the Administration of the Lord’s Supper ANNOUNCEMENT {In making previous announcement that this service ts to be held, the Minister may conclude with the following The Scripture saith, Let a man prove himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. INVOCATION 1 To be said by the Minister In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. OPENING SENTENCES {] Let several of these sentences of Scripture be read, to bring those present into fit frame of mind to receive the Communion Seek ye Jehovah while he may be found; call ye upon him while he is near: let the wicked forsake his way, and the unright- eous man his thoughts; and let him return unto Jehovah, for he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. He hath not dealt with us after our sins, nor rewarded us after our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his lovingkindness toward them 91 Communion Herbice that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our trans- eressions from us. For this God is our God for ever hag ever: he will be our guide even unto death. The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And he that heareth, let him say, Come. And he that is athirst, let him come: he that will, let him take the water of life freely. Work not for the food which perisheth, but for the food which abideth unto eternal life, which the Son of Man shall give unto you: for him the Father, even God, hath sealed. The bread of God is that which cometh down out of heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall not hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. Verily, verily I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink his blood, ye have not life in yourselves. The Spirit himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are children of God. He that spared not his own Son, but de- livered him up for us all, how shall he not with him freely give us all things. I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, Communion Herbice 93 shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Searcely for a righteous man will one die: for peradventure for the good man, some one would even dare to die. But God com- -mendeth his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Repent ye, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us: but if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I know my transgressions; and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in thy sight. I will arise and go to my Father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in thy sight: I am no more worthy to be called thy son. Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, saith the Lord, and I will give you rest. God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life. If any man sin, we have an Advocate Communion Herbice with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the whole world. O taste and see that Jehovah is good; blessed is the man that taketh refuge in him. ni Our Passover hath been sacrificed for us, even Christ. Wherefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. This is my commandment, that ye love one another, even as I have loved you. If therefore thou art offering thy gift at the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath aught against thee, leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God, and every one that loveth is’ begotten of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God: for God is love. No longer do I call you servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard from the Father, I have made known unto you. Return unto thy rest, O my soul, for Jehovah hath dealt bountifully with thee. Communion HSerbice 95 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Blessed are they that are perfect in the Way; who walk in the law of Jehovah. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which satisfieth not? Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy and eat; ye, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it, but it shall be for the redeemed: the wayfaring men, yea, fools, shall not err therein. Jehovah, who shall sojourn in thy Taber- nacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly and worketh righteousness, and speaketh truth in his heart. For there is one God, one Mediator also between God and man, himself man, Christ Jesus, who gave himself a ransom for all. I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life; no one cometh unto the Father, but by me. Wherewith shall I come before Jehovah, and bow myself before the high God? . . . He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth Jehovah require of thee, but Communion Herbice to do justly, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with thy God. Whosoever would be first among you shall be your servant: even as the Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Behold I stand at the door and knock, saith the Lord: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. The love of Christ constraineth us; be- cause we thus judge; that one died for all, therefore all died; and he died for all, that they that live should no longer live unto themselves alone, but unto him who for their sakes died and rose again. He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and car-' ried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastise- ment of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and Jehovah hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. Abide in me, and I in you, saith the Lord. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, Communion Herbice ; 97 except it abide in the vine, no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine; ye are the branches. He that abideth in me the same beareth much fruit: for without me, ye can do nothing. He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood, abideth in me and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father: so he that eateth me, he also shall live, because of me. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not the truth: but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus his Son, cleanseth us from all sin. Our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. But let a man prove himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. PRAYER { The Minister may then offer prayer, either extempore, or by the use of this prayer, or by the use of one of the Eucharistic Prayers of this book O God, who by the blood of thy dear Son hast consecrated for us a new and living way into the holiest of all; cleanse our minds, we beseech thee, by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that drawing near EERE ae 98 Communion Herbice UE EEEEREE unto thee with a pure heart and undefiled conscience, we may receive these thy gifts without sin, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, This is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me., § Then let the Minister give of the bread to the Dea- cons, or other assistants, who shall distribute to the people. When they have returned to the table, let the Minister, in similar manner, serve the Deacons; after which let the Senior Deacon serve the Minis- ter: the officers of the Church being thus served last, in token that they are the servants of the Church. But let none of those present eat of the bread until all have been served, that all may par- take of the Communion together. After the par- taking of the bread, let there be a season of silence, for prayer and meditation. This do in remembrance of me. | Let the Wine be distributed in the same manner as the Bread; and let the Minister conclude the Giving of the Cup with these words As often as ye eat this bread and drink this cup, ye proclaim the Lord’s death—till he come. Eucharistic Prayers 1 O God our Father, we give thee hearty thanks for this most blessed Communion of which thou dost make us partakers. We again dedicate ourselves to thy service, in body and soul and spirit. Make thy grace always sufficient for us. Perfect thy strength in our weakness. Succor us amid the manifold temptations and sorrows of our lives. Give us power to endure unto the end as good soldiers of Jesus Christ. Let the light of thy countenance be upon us now and evermore. Regard in thy great mercy, O Lord, all those with whom we are this day one in the body of Christ, the multitudes of every name who are joined with us in one household of faith and love, our brethren and sisters in Christ through- out the world. And mindful this day of the communion of saints, we bless thy Holy Name for all thy servants who have departed in the faith [espe- cially those now present in our remembrance] ; the great cloud of witnesses by whom we are compassed about; all thy saints in every age who have loved thee in life and continued faith- ful unto death. Enable us, we beseech thee, so to follow their faith and good examples, that we with them may finally be partakers of thy heavenly Kingdom, and with them become like unto our Lord Jesus Christ, when we shall see him face to face. Amen. 101 102 Eucharistic Prapers 2 O Christ, who didst suffer for our advantage on the bitter cross, whose body was broken and whose blood poured out for us; arm us also with the same mind that was in thee. May we also be willing to suffer for others, be the suffering in mind or body or estate. In this world, so full of divisive selfishness, may we accept brother- hood as the ruling principle of life. Help us to abjure this day the selfish use of power or money for the exploitation of our fellows. May we dedicate our lives to the establishment of the Kingdom of God, to the organization of all pri- vate and public life by the Golden Rule of thy Gospel. And if, in the service of this ideal, there should come to us risk, or loss, or con- tempt, or suffering; yea, even if death should be our portion, may we not falter, but remember again [as in this Memorial] thine own broken, bleeding body; and take new courage from the fellowship of thy sufferings; and enter into the joy of more perfect realization of thy blessed Presence. Amen. (Note that if this Prayer be used on Good Friday, the words “as in this Memorial” should be omitted.) 3 O Thou Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, we beseech thee, according to the riches of thy glory, to strengthen us with might by thy Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in our hearts by faith; so that, being rooted and Eucharistic Prapers 103 erounded in love, we may be able to compre- hend, with all saints, what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height, and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge. Amen. 4 O God, who of thy great love to this world, didst reconcile earth to heaven through thine only-begotten Son: grant that we who by the darkness of our sins are turned aside from brotherly love, may by thy light shed forth in our souls, be filled with thine own sweetness, and embrace our friends in thee, and our enemies for thy sake, in a bond of mutual affection. Amen. 4) Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who dost admit thy people unto such wonderful com- munion, that partaking of the Body and Blood of thy dear Son, they should dwell in him and he in them; we unworthy sinners, approaching to thy presence and beholding thy glory, do abhor ourselves and repent in dust and ashes. We have sinned, we have sinned, we have griev- ously sinned against thee in thought, in word, and in deed, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. The remembrance of our shortcomings fills us with sorrow and shame. Yet now, O most merciful Father, have mercy upon us; for the sake of Jesus Christ, forgive us all our sins; purify us, by the inspira- tion of thy Holy Spirit, from all inward unclean- ness; enable us heartily to forgive others as we 104 Eucharistic Prapers beseech thee to forgive us; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life; to the honor and glory of thy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 6 We thank thee, Holy Father, for thy Holy Name, which thou hast caused to dwell in our hearts, and for the knowledge and faith and immortality which thou hast made known to us through Jesus, thy Servant; to thee be the glory for ever. Thou, Almighty Master, didst create all things for thy Name’s sake; both food and drink thou didst give to men for enjoyment, in order that they might give thanks to thee; but to us thou hast graciously given spiritual food and drink and eternal life, through thy Servant. Before all things we thank thee that thou art powerful; to thee be the glory for ever. Remember, Lord, thy Church, to deliver it from every evil, and to make it perfect in thy love, and gather it from the four winds, it, the sanctified, into thy Kingdom, which thou hast prepared for it; for thine is the power and the glory, for ever. Let grace come, and let this world pass away. Whoever is holy, let him come; whoever is not, let him repent. Hosanna to the Son of David, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.* *This Prayer is probably the oldest Christian prayer outside the New Testament. It is from the Didache, A.D. 100-A. D. 120, slightly adapted. Eucharistic Prapers 105 fi Blessed Lord, who didst give thy Son to be our Savior, fulfill in us day by day while we live, the work of thy redeeming mercy. Give us to know Christ in the perfection of his life, that like him we may be in the world holy, harmless, undefiled, and separate from sinners. Give us to know Christ and the fellowship of his suffering, that we may not be wearied and faint in our minds, but may ever be resigned to thy most blessed will. Give us to know Christ and the virtue of his death, that the world may be crucified unto us and we unto the world, that we may die unto sin and live unto right- eousness. Give us to know Christ and the power of his resurrection, that as he was raised from the dead in the glory of the Father, we may rise unto newness of life. Give us to know Christ and the hope of his appearing, that we may be ready to give in our account with joy. O may we live by faith in him; may we increase in union with him; may we day by day become more like him, till we see him as he is and are changed into his perfect image. Amen. 8 O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy humble servants earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in him, we, and all thy whole Church, may obtain remission 106 Eucharistic Prayers of our sins and all other benefits of his suffering. And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrific unto thee; humbly beseeching thee that we and all partakers of the holy com- munion may be filled with thy grace and heav- enly benediction. And although we are un- worthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice; yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service; not weighing our merits but pardoning our offenses, through Jesus Christ our Lord: by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen. 9 O merciful Father, we thank thee for thy goodness to thy people in this place in per- mitting them to remember their Lord and Savior in this holy ordinance, and in feeding them with the spiritual food of his most precious body and blood. Continue to us thy loving- kindness, and grant that as we have received the Lord Jesus, we may walk in him, dying daily unto sin and living unto righteousness, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. An Order for the Dedication of Children ANNOUNCEMENT In making previous announcement that this service ts to be held, the Minister may conclude with the following Jesus said, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not; for to such belongeth the Kingdom of God. INVOCATION { To be said by the Minister In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. THE ScrRIPTURE LESSON Luke 2:22, 24, 39-52 And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, his parents brought Jesus up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord, and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord. . . . And when they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. And the child grew, and waxed strong, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. And his parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old they 107 108 Dedication of Children went up after the custom of the feast; and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not, but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey; and they sought for him among their kinsfolk and acquain- tance; and when they found him not they returned to Jerusalem, seeking for him. And it came to pass, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both hearing them and ask- ing them questions: and all that heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. And when they saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? Behold thy father and I sought thee sorrow- ing. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? Knew ye not that I must be in my Father’s house? And they under- stood not the saying which he spake unto them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth; and he was subject unto them; and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wis- dom and stature, and in favor with God and men. Luke 18:15-17 And they were bringing unto him also their babes, that he should touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. But Jesus called unto him, saying, Dedication of Children 109 Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbic them not: for to such belongeth the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the king- dom of God as a little child, he shall in no wise enter therein. VoWS OF THE PARENTS | The parents, with the child, shall then stand before the Minister, who shall ask these questions, to each of which the parents shall make answer Minister: Do you now present this your child to Almighty God your heavenly Fathe1, earnestly desiring that he shall grow up into faith and love toward Jesus Christ our Lord, and into the service of his Kingdom? Parents: I do. Minister: Do you promise to instruct your child in the principles of true religion as contained in the Scriptures, to pray with him and for him, and to bring him up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord? Parents: I do. PRAYER FOR THE PARENTS {| Let the Minister then offer prayer for the parents, as follows Grant, O Lord, to these thy servants, grace to perform the things which they have promised before thee. May they so yield their own lives to the illumination and guidance of thy Spirit, that they may be 110 Dedication of Children able to lead this child, whom they now dedicate to thee, into fulness of faith in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. PRAYER FOR THE CHILD Then let the Minister ask the name of the child, and on being told the same by one of the parents, offer prayer on its behalf Minister: What is the name of this child? Parent: M. N. Minister: Let us pray. Most holy and merciful Father, from whom every family in heaven and in earth is named, hear thou, we beseech thee, the prayer which we offer on behalf of this child M. N. We thank thee that thou lovest the little children, and that thou hast taught us that it is only by possessing the trustful and humble hearts of little children, that we can find entrance into thy heavenly Kingdom. Bless this little child brought into thy courts to-day. Preserve him from every evil of body and mind and soul. When the choices of life shall present them- selves to Ais awakening mind, give him grace to abhor the evil and cleave to that which is good. Above all, may he come to love our Lord Jesus Christ,°to believe in Him, to follow Him into the waters of baptism, to serve Him in the Church and in the world, and by repentance and faith ever to walk with Him in perpetual newness ES SE A eee Dedication of Children 111 ete: Sa nal tele ca he ee BAS SNE Sea aie a ie of life, until he come into the full stature of our perfect humanity in Christ Jesus. And finally, when the days of his pilgrimage are ended, receive him to thyself and make him to be num- bered with thy saints in glory everlasting, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. PRESENTATION OF GIFTS | Here, if convenient, it is fitting that the Minister should deliver to the parents a copy of the Holy Scriptures, suitably inscribed, as a gift from the Church, for the use of the child when he shall grow old enough to read therein. The Minister may also, if he will, place in the hand of the child a cluster of three white flowers, as a symbol of the Holy Trinity Tue Lorp’s PRAYER {| Let all present stand Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. ADDRESS 7 The Minister shall address those present in this manner* Dearly beloved, we are assembled here in the presence of God, to join this Man and this Woman in holy Marriage; which is instituted of God, regulated by his com- mandments, blessed by our Lord Jesus Christ, and to be held in honor among all men. Let us therefore reverently remember that God has established and_ sanctified Marriage, for the welfare and happiness of mankind. Our Savior has declared that a man shall forsake his father and mother and cleave unto his wife. By his apostles, he has instructed those who enter into this relation to cherish a mutual esteem and *The service from this point quotes the text of the Order for the Solemnization of Marriage in “The Book of Common Worship,” copyrighted by the Trustees of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and is used by their permission. 113 114 HMlarriage Berbice love; to bear with each other’s infirmities and weaknesses; to comfort each other in sickness, trouble and sorrow;. in honesty and industry to provide for each other, and for their household in temporal things; to pray for and encourage each other in the things which pertain to God; and to live together as the heirs of the grace of life. Forasmuch as these two Persons have come hither to be made one in this holy estate, if there be any here present who knows any just cause why they may not lawfully be joined in Marriage, I require him now to make it known, or ever after to ~ hold his peace. THE CHARGE { The Minister shall then charge the persons who are to be married, as follows I charge you both, before the great God the Searcher of all hearts, that if either of you know any impediment, why ye may not lawfully be joined together in Marriage, ye do now confess it. For be ye well assured that if any persons are joined together otherwise than as God’s Word allows, their union is not blessed by him. An @rder for the Burial of Members of the Church INVOCATION { When all are assembled in the Church or in the home, let the Minister begin the Service with the following Invocation In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. OPENING SENTENCES | Let the Minster read such of the following sentences from the Scripture, as he shall deem suitable Our help is in the name of Jehovah, who made heaven and earth. All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth, but the word of our God shall stand for ever. We know that if the earthly house of our tabernacle be dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens. Our Savior Jesus Christ hath abolished death, and brought life and immortality to hight through the Gospel. I am the Resurrection and the Life, saith the Lord; he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth on me shall never die. Jehovah gave and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah. 119 Burial Serbice Ye know not what shall be on the mor- row, What is your life? For ye are a vapor that appeareth for a little time and then vanisheth away. We are strangers before thee and so- journers, as all our fathers were; our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is no abiding. We brought nothing into this world, SAA, neither can we carry anything out. None of us liveth unto himself and none of us dieth unto himself; for whether we live, we live unto the Lord, or whether we die, we die unto the Lord; whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s, for to this end, Christ died and rose and revived, that he might be Lord, both of the dead and of the living. Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; and be ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the Right- eous Judge, shall give to me at that day— and not to me only, but also to all them that have loved his appearing. Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his! Burial Serbice 121 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord, from henceforth; yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them. I know him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard that which I have committed unto him against that day. Weep not,. saith the Lord, the child is not dead, but sleepeth. I say unto you that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven. If we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also who sleep in Jesus, will God bring with him. Verily, verily I say unto you, The hour cometh and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril or sword? Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us 122 Burial Serbice from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. | , Now hath Christ been raised from the dead, the first-fruits of them that are asleep. O death, where is thy sting? O death, where is thy victory? Thanks be to God, who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. PRAYER Let the Minister then offer one of. the following prayers, and let tt be followed by the general saying of the Lord’s Prayer, by those present Almighty and most merciful God, the consolation of the sorrowful and the sup- port of the weary, who dost not willingly grieve or afflict the children of men: look down in tender love and pity, we beseech thee, upon thy servants, this bereaved household, whose joy is turned into mourn- ing; so that while they mourn they may not murmur, and in their perplexity they may not despair. According to thy great mercy, be pleased to uphold, strengthen, and com- fort them; that they may not faint under thy fatherly chastening but find in thee their strength and refuge; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who art our Refuge and Strength, and a very present Help in time of trouble; enable us, we pray thee, to put our trust in thee, and Burial Serbice 123 seeing we have an High Priest who is touched with the feeling of our infirmities, may we come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in this time of need: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory for ever. Amen. Outp TESTAMENT LESSON qj Let the Minister then read a Lesson from the Old Testament, using, if he will, one of the following passages. And note that other suitable lessons from the Old Testament may be found in Psalm 90; Job 14:1-15 and 19:25-27b ; Prov. 31:10-31 (for the death of an aged mother) ; II Sam. 12:18-23 (for the death of a child); Eccl. 12:1-7, 13, 14 (for the death of a young person) Psalm 23 Jehovah is my shepherd; I shall not want. For he will give his angels charge over thee, To keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, Lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: The young lion and the serpent shalt thou trample under foot. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble: I will deliver him, and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him, And show him my salvation. Psalm 103:1-18 Bless Jehovah, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless his holy name. Jehovah is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger and abundant in lovingkind- ness. He will not always chide; Neither will he keep his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins, Nor rewarded us after our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth So great is his lovingkindness toward them that fear him. And note that other suitable lessons may be found in Luke 7:11-16 and John 11:32-44 (for the death of a young man) John 14:1, 2, 15-20, 25-27; I Thess. 4:13, 14; o:1, 2, 4-11 Let not your heart be troubled: believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may be with you for ever, even the Spirit of truth: whom the world cannot receive; for it be- 128 Burial Serbice holdeth him not, neither knoweth him: ye know him; for he abideth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you deso- late: I come unto you. Yet a little while and the world beholdeth me no more; but ye behold me: because I live, ye shall live also. In that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. These things have I spoken unto you, while yet abiding with you. But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful. But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning them that fall asleep; that ye sorrow not, even as the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also that are fallen asleep in Jesus will God bring with him. But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that aught be written unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness that that day should overtake you as a thief: for ye are all sons of light, and sons of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness; so then let us not sleep, as do the rest, but let Burial Serbice 129 us watch and be sober. For they that sleep, sleep in the night; and they that are drunken are drunken in the night. But let us, since we are of the day, be sober, put- ting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God appointed us not unto wrath, but unto the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. Wherefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as also ye do. I Cor. 15:12-28, 35-44a, 54-58 Now if Christ is preached that he hath been raised from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, neither hath Christ been raised: and if Christ hath not been raised, then is our preaching vain, your faith also is vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of ~ God; because we witnessed of God that he raised up Christ; whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, neither hath Christ been raised: and if Christ hath not been raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also that are fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If we have only hoped in Christ in this life, we are of all men most pitiable. But now hath Christ been raised from the 130 Burial Serbice dead, the first-fruits of them that are asleep. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the first-fruits; then they that are Christ’s, at his coming. Then cometh the end, when he shall deliver up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have abolished all rule and all authority and power. For he must reign, till he hath put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy that shall be abolished is death. For, He shall put all things in subjection under his feet. But when he saith, All things are put in subjection, it is evident that he is excepted who did subject all things unto him. And when all things have been sub- jected unto him, then shail the Son also himself be subjected unto him that did subject all things unto him, that God may be all in all. . But some one will say, How are the dead raised? and with what manner of body do they come? Thou foolish one, that which thou thyself sowest is not quickened except it die: and that which thou sowest, thou sowest not the body that shall be, but a bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other kind; but God giveth it a body even as it pleased him, and to each seed a body of its own. All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one flesh of men, and another flesh of beasts, and another flesh of Burial Herbice 131 birds, and another of fishes. There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differeth from another star in glory. So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: it is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: it is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. - But when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall come to pass. the saying that is written, Death is swal- lowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O death, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the power of sin is the law: but thanks be to God, who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, al- ways abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not vain in the Lord. Rev. 14:13; 21:1-8; 22:1-5 And I heard a voice from heaven saying, Write, Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from henceforth: yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; for their works follow with them. Burial Serbice And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth are passed away; and the sea is no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jeru- salem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of the throne saying, Behold, the taber- nacle of God is with men, and he shall dwell with them, and they shall be his peoples, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God: and he shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and death shall be no more; neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more: the first things are passed away. And he that sitteth on the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he saith, Write: for these words are faithful and true. And he said unto me, They are come to pass. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the begin- ning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst, of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit these things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But for the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murder- ers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part shall be in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death. And he showed me a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb, in the Burial Herbice ts3 midst of the street thereof. And on this side of the river and on that was the _ tree of life, bearing twelve manner of fruits, yielding its fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no curse any more: and the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be therein: and his servants shall serve him; and they shall see his face; and his name shall be on their foreheads. And there shall be night no more; and they need no light of lamp, neither light of sun; for the Lord God shall give them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever. Mk. 10:138-16; Rev. 22:4; 7:16-17 (For the death of a child) And they were bringing unto him, little children, that he should touch them: and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was moved with indigna- tion, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me; forbid them not: for to such belongeth the kingdom of God. Verily, I say unto you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall in no wise enter therein. And he took them in his arms, and blessed them, laying his hands upon them. And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun strike upon them, nor any heat: for the Lamb that is 134 Burial Service in the midst of the throne shall be their shepherd, and shall guide them unto foun- tains of waters of life: and God shall wipe away every tear from their eyes. | ADDRESS q A brief address may here be made, if it be thought desirable PRAYER q After the address, prayer should be offered, either extemporaneously or by the use of one of the following prayers For Consolation of Faith O God of all consolation, Father of our dear Lord Jesus Christ, Friend closer than any brother, whose Spirit mingles with our spirits: Thou alone canst comfort us in our affliction. Lighten our darkness, we beseech Thee, and still our unquiet hearts with Thy sweet words of peace. Teach us that all the truth and grace which we have this day lost in him from whom we are parted, we shall find in him again, enriched and sanc- tified, in Thy holy presence. Amid so much of change and confusion and mortality, may we in this hour lay hold on the immortal and the enduring. May we know that faith will never die; that hope shall never be put to shame; that love never faileth. May we know that nothing whatever of the beauty or strength or affection or holiness which we saw in him whom we have loved and lost awhile, has ceased to be. Rather may Burial Herbice 135 our troubled and broken hearts be assured and set to rest in Thee, certain that the constant faith, unconquerable hope and deathless love which were his, and which we crave may be ours also, will come to glorious consummation in fulness of joy when he and we shall stand together at Thy right hand through Jesus Christ. Amen. For Right Use of Affliction O God, whose days are without end, and whose mercies cannot be numbered; make us, we beseech Thee, deeply sensible of the shortness and uncertainty of human life; and let Thy Holy Spirit lead us through this present world in holiness and righteous- ness all the days of our lives; that when we shall have served Thee in our generation, we. may be gathered unto our fathers, hav- ing the testimony of a good conscience; in the communion of thy holy Church; in the confidence of a certain faith; in the comfort of a reasonable, religious and holy hope; in favor with Thee our God, and in perfect charity with the world. All which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Presence of Christ O Lord Jesus Christ, who Thyself didst weep beside the grave, and art touched with the feeling of our sorrows: fulfil now Thy promise that Thou wilt not leave Thy peo- ple comfortless, but wilt come to them. 136 Burial Herbice May we who cannot see Thee with the eye of flesh, behold Thee steadfastly with the eye of faith. Reveal Thyself unto Thine afflicted servants, and cause us to hear Thee. saying, “I am the Resurrection and the Life.’ Help us, O Lord, to turn to Thee with true discernment, and to abide in Thee through living faith: that, finding now the comfort of Thy presence, we have also a sure confidence in Thee for all that is to come: until the day break and these shadows flee away. Hear us for Thy great mercy’s sake, O Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. For Grace to Follow Christ O Lord Jesus Christ, who by Thy death didst take away the sting of death; grant unto us Thy servants so to follow in faith where Thou hast led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in Thee, and awake after Thy likeness; through Thy mercy, who livest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen. For Us Who Still Live Blessed are all Thy saints, our God and King, who have traveled over the tempestu- ous sea of mortality, and have at last made the desired port of peace and felicity. Oh, cast a gracious eye upon us who are still in our dangerous voyage. Remember and suc- Burial Serbice Los cor us in our distress, and think on them that. be exposed to the rough storms of troubles and temptations. Strengthen our weakness, that we may do valiantly in this spiritual war; help us against our own neg- ligence and cowardice, and defend us from the treachery of our unfaithful hearts. We are exceeding frail and indisposed to every gallant and virtuous undertaking. Grant, O Lord, that we may bring our vessel safe into our desired haven, through Jesus Christ. Amen. Thanksgiving for the Righteous Dead We thank Thee for the dear and faithful dead, for those who have made the distant heavens a home for us, and whose truth and beauty are even now in our hearts. One by one Thou dost gather the scattered families out of the earthly light into the heavenly glory, from the distractions and strife and weariness of time to the peace of eternity. We thank Thee for the labors and joys of these mortal years. We thank Thee for our deep sense of the mysteries that lie behind our dust, and for the eye of faith which Thou hast opened for all who believe in Thy Son, to behold through the dark present the shining future. May we live altogether in Thy faith and love, and in that hope which is full of immor- tality, until for us also the day shall break in glory, through the grace of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. 138 Burial Serbice For Support During Life O Lord, support us all day long of this troublous life, until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in Thy great mercy grant us a safe lodging and a holy rest, and peace at last; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. BENEDICTION The Minister shall then pronounce a Benediction upon all those present, as follows The peace of God which passeth all under- standing, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen. THE CoMMITTAL ] When the company have come to the place of burial, while the coffin ts being made ready to be lowered, the Minister may read any of the Scripture Sen- tences (p. 119) not heretofore read, or the words of the following ancient hymn In the midst of life we are in death: of whom may we seek for succor, but of Thee, O Lord, who for our sins most justly art displeased? Yet O Lord God most holy, O Lord most mighty, O holy and most merciful Savior, Burial Serbice 139 deliver us not unto the bitter pains of eter- nal death. Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts; shut not Thy merciful ears to our prayer; but spare us Lord most holy, O God most mighty, O holy and merciful Savior, Thou most werthy Judge Eternal, suffer us not at our last hour, for any pains of death, to fall from Thee! { Then, while the coffin is lowered into the grave and earth is cast upon it by some one standing by, the Minister shall utter the following Words of Com- mittal Forasmuch as it hath pleased Almighty God to take out of the world the soul of our brother departed (or of this child), we therefore commit his body to the ground; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust; remembering the good word of promise, that if the earthly house of our tabernacle be dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens; through our Lord Jesus Christ. § The Minister may then offer this Prayer, with the Benediction following O merciful God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Resurrection and the Life; in whom whosoever believeth shall live, though he die, and whosoever liveth and believeth in Him shall not die eter- nally: we humbly beseech Thee, O Father, to raise us from the death of sin to the life of righteousness; that when we shall 140 Burial Service depart this life, we may rest in Him; and that at the Resurrection we may be found acceptable in Thy sight, and receive that blessing which Thy well-beloved Son shall then pronounce to all that love and serve Thee, saying, Come, ye blessed children of my Father, receive the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world; grant this, we beseech Thee, O merciful Father, through Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Redeemer. Amen. Now the God of Peace, who brought again from the dead the great Shepherd of the Sheep, with the blood of an eternal covenant, even our Lord Jesus, make you perfect in every good thing to do His will, working in you that which is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen. Gn Order for the Burial of Those Who Have Lived Apart from the Church INVOCATION §] When all are assembled in the home, the Minister may begin the service with the following invocation In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. OPENING SENTENCES q{ Let the Minister read such of the following senterces from the Scriptures as he shall deem suitable Our help is in the name of Jehovah, who made heaven and earth. Boast not thyself of to-morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God shall stand for ever. Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning. And be ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. Verily, verily I say unto you, The hour cometh and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. Our Savior Jesus Christ hath abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 141 Second Burial Service Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah. PRAYER Q Let the Minister then offer one of the following prayers, and let it be followed by the general say- ing of the Lord’s Prayer, by those present - Almighty God, the Fountain of all wis- dom, who knowest our necessities before we ask, and our ignorance in asking; we be- seech thee to have compassion upon our infirmities; and those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask, vouchsafe to give us for the worthiness of thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Almighty and most merciful God, the consolation of the sorrowful and the sup- port of the weary, who dost not willingly grieve or affiict the children of men; look down in tender love and pity, we beseech thee, upon thy servants, this bereaved household, whose joy is turned into mourn- ing; so that while they mourn they may not murmur and in their perplexity they may not despair. According to Thy great mercy be pleased to uphold, strengthen, and com- fort them; that they may not faint under Thy fatherly chastening, but find in Thee their strength and refuge; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name; Thy kingdom come. Thy Second Burial Serbice 143 q A will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the ‘kingdom and the power and the glory for ever. Amen. Oup TESTAMENT LESSON lesson from the Old Testament may then be read, either one of the two Psalms following or Eccl. 12:1-7, 13, 14 [for the death of a young person] Psalm 130 Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Jehovah. Lord, hear my voice: Let thine ears be attentive To the voice of my supplications. If thou, Jehovah, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, That thou mayest be feared. I wait for Jehovah, my soul doth wait, And in his word do I hope. My soul waiteth for the Lord More than watchmen wait for the morning; Yea, more than watchmen for the morning. O Israel, hope in Jehovah; For with Jehovah there is lovingkindness, And with him is plenteous redemption. And he will redeem Israel From all his iniquities. 144 Seconds Burial Service Psalm 103 Bless Jehovah, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless Jehovah, O my soul, And forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; Who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; Who crownest thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; ny Who satisfieth thy desire with good things, So that thy youth is renewed like the eagle. Jehovah executeth righteous acts, And judgments for all that are oppressed. He made known his ways unto Moses, His doings unto the children of Israel. Jehovah is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abundant in loving- kindness. He will not always chide; Neither will he keep his anger forever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins, Nor rewarded us after our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is his lovingkindness toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, So far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Like as a father pitieth his children, So Jehovah pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; Second Burial Service 145 He remembereth that we are dust. As for man, his days are as grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; And the place thereof shall know it no more. But the lovingkindness of Jehovah is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, And his righteousness unto children’s chil- dren; To such as keep his covenant, And to those that remember his precepts to do them. Jehovah hath established his throne in the heavens; And his kingdom ruleth over all. Bless Jehovah, ye his angels, | That are mighty in strength, that fulfil his | word, | Hearkening unto the voice of his word. Bless Jehovah all ye his hosts, Ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure. Bless Jehovah, all ye his works, In all places of his dominion: Bless Jehovah, O my soul. (GLORIA ] After any reading from the Psalms, it is appropriate that the Gloria Patri be said or sung Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. But note that other suit- able lessons from the New Testament may be found in Luke 7:11-16 and John 11:32-44 (for the death of a young man) pt 4 I Cor. 15:20-22, 45-49; I Thess. 5:1, 2, 4-11 But now hath Christ been raised from the dead, the first-fruits of them that are asleep. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. So also it is written, The first man Adam became a living soul. The last Adam became a_ life-giving spirit. Howbeit that is not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; then that which is spiritual. The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is of heaven. As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that aught be written unto you. For yourselves know per- fectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. But ye, brethren, Second Burial Servbice 147 are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief: for ye are all sons of light, and sons of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness; so then let us not sleep, as do the rest, but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep, sleep in the night; and they that are drunken, are drunken in the night. But let us, since we are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God appointed us not unto wrath, but unto the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. Wherefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as also ye do. ADDRESS | A brief address may here be made, tf it be thought desirable PRAYER {| Prayer may then be offered, either extemporaneously or by the use of the following Almighty God, who seest not as man seeth, neither judgest as man judgeth, we give Thee thanks for all that was worthy in the life of him who has now passed from the world. Since it is through Thy mercy alone that we are not cut off, and by Thy grace that 148 Second Burial Service we are saved, we beseech Thee so to impress our hearts with a sense of Thy forgiveness, that earnestly desiring the best gifts, we may henceforth walk humbly before Thee, serving Thee and our fellowmen in faith, hope and love, until the day break and the shadows flee away; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O Lord, support us all day long of this troublous life, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. The Minister may then offer one of the following prayers, with the Benediction following We commend into thy hands of mercy, most merciful Father, the soul of this our 150 Second Burial Service brother departed, remembering thine infi- nite goodness, and beseeching thee, if it be possible, to grant that he, coming now into the fuller light of thy Presence, may there find the dark cloud of sin rolled away, the mists of doubt and error dissolved, and the veil of ignorance rent asunder; and may give himself to thy love and service for eternity. And grant that we who are here present may receive grace to live in thy fear and love, and to die in thy favor; that when the judgment shall come, which thou hast committed to thy well-beloved Son, both this our brother and we, may be found acceptable in thy sight, and receive the blessing which thy well-beleved Son shall then pronounce upon all who love and fear thee, saying, Come, ye blessed children of my Father, receive the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world. Amen. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. Amen. General Prayers CONFIDENCE IN Gop O Lord, by all thy dealings with us, whether of joy or pain, of light or darkness, let us be brought to thee. Let us value no treatment of thy grace simply because it makes us happy or because it makes us sad, because it gives us, or denies us, what we want; but may all that thou sendest us bring us to thee, that knowing thy perfectness, we may be sure in every disappoint- ment that thou art still loving us, in every darkness that thou art still enlightening us, and in every enforced idleness that thou art still using us; yea, in every death that thou art giv- ing us life as in his death thou didst give life to thy Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. SELF CONTROL We beseech thee, O Lord, by the mystery of our Savior’s fasting and temptation, to arm us with the same mind that was in him, toward all evil and sin; and give us grace to keep our bodies in such holy discipline, that our minds may be always ready to resist evil, and obey the motions of thy Holy Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. , Hicurr ASPIRATIONS O God, the Father of lights, from whom cometh down every good and perfect gift, and who art thyself the only satisfying portion of the souls which thou hast made; grant us grace, we beseech thee, to raise our thoughts and affec- tions from earth to heaven, and to breathe con- 152 General Prapers 153 tinually after thy presence; that so, in the midst of all worldly vanity and change, our hearts may surely there be fixed where alone are to be found true joys and everlasting peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Ricut THouGHTSs Most merciful Father, who orderest the wills and affections of men; inspire in the hearts of us thy servants, holy wishes and aspirations, that all base imaginings and sinful broodings may be cast out. Spirit of purity and grace, cleanse the thoughts of our hearts and bring our whole beings into captivity to the law of Christ. So direct and control our minds that we may ever think on whatsoever things are true and pure and lovely. Let no corrupt thought get dominion over us. Enter thou into the house of our soul. Enlarge and renew it and conse- crate it to thyself, that we may love thee with 154 General Prayers all our minds and serve thee with all our might. Free us from the fascinations of false pleasures and the allurement of debasing desires. Fill our eyes with the eternal beauty of goodness, that vice and sin may appear as they really are, the last shame and despair of life. Keep us out- wardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, and constrain us to reverential obedience to the laws thou hast made. Sustain us in health of body that we may the better control the motions of thought, and repel the assaults of passion. We ask it for thy Son our Savior’s sake. Amen. UNWORLDLINESS O God who hast given unto us in the midst of our temptations and trials, the great hope of eternal life through the mediation of thy Son Jesus Christ, grant that while here in the flesh we may have our conversation in heaven, and may feel the power of the world to come. May we labor not only for the meat that perisheth, but for that which endureth unto life everlast- ing. May we use the world as not abusing it. Though in the world, may we not be of it. Strength us to overcome sensuality by self- denial, anger by meekness, indifference by devo- tion, and always evil with good. Suffer us not in our health and prosperity to forget thee, or in our sickness and adversity to think ourselves forgotten of thee. May we seek that holiness without which no man shall see thee; and be faithful to the trust committed to us, working out our salvation with fear and trembling, that in the end we may be found worthy to stand General Prapers 190 before the Son of Man, and may receive the crown of righteousness which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Amen. Rest 1n Gop Grant.us, O most loving Lord, to rest in thee above all created things, above all health and beauty, above all glory and honor, above all power and dignity, above all knowledge and science, above all riches and art, above all fame and praise, above all sweetness and comfort, above all hope and promise, above all gifts and favors that thou canst give and impart to us, above all jubilee that the mind of man can receive and feel; finally above all angels and archangels, and above all the heavenly host, above all things visible and invisible, and above all that thou art not, O our God. It is too small and unsatisfying, whatsoever thou bestowest on us apart from thee, or revealest to us, or prom- isest, whilst thou art not seen, and not fully obtained. For surely our hearts cannot truly rest, nor be entirely contented, until they rest in thee, through Jesus Christ. Amen. Ricgut Decision Almighty God, and most merciful Father, give us, we beseech thee, that grace that we may duly examine the inmost of our hearts, and our most secret thoughts, how we stand before thee; and that we may never henceforward be drawn to do anything that may dishonor thy name: but may preserve in all good purposes, and in thy holy service, until our life’s end; and grant that we may now this present day, seeing it is 156 General Prayers as good as nothing that we have done hitherto, perfectly begin to walk before thee, as becometh those that are called to an inheritance of light in Christ. Amen. RicgHt DEcIsIon Eternal God, who committest to us the swift and solemn trust of life; since we know not what a day may bring forth, but only that the hour for serving thee is always present, may we wake to the instant claims of thy holy will; not wait- ing for to-morrow, but yielding to-day. Lay to rest, by the persuasion of thy Spirit, the resist- ance of our passion, indolence, or fear. Conse- crate with thy presence the way our feet may go, and the humblest work will shine, and the roughest places be made plain. Lift us above unrighteous anger and mistrust in faith and hope and charity, by a simple and steadfast reliance on thy pure will. In all things draw us to the mind of Christ, that thy lost image may be traced again, and thou mayest own us as at one with him and thee. Amen. PARDON O merciful God, we acknowledge and confess before thee our many sins, especially those sins which our consciences charge against us at this time. Thou art our Father, but we have been disobedient children. Thou art our King, but we have been rebellious subjects. Thou art our Master, but we have been unprofitable servants. When we would have done good, evil has been present with us. Our own hearts condemn us, @eneral Prapers 157 and thou art greater than our hearts, and knowest all things. Have mercy upon us. For the sake of thy Son, Jesus Christ, pardon our sins. Give unto us the assurance of reconcilia- tion and forgiveness. Fill us with all Joy and peace in believing, and grant unto us grace to love thee more truly, and to serve thee better in all time to come, through Jesus Christ. Amen. PARDON Almighty and merciful God, the Fountain of all goodness, who knowest the thoughts of our hearts, we confess unto thee that we have sinned against thee, and done that which is evil in thy sight. Wash us, we beseech thee, from the stains of our past sins, and give us grace to put away all hurtful things: so that, being delivered from the bondage of sin, we may bring forth fruits worthy of repentance. O eternal Light, shine into our hearts. O eternal Goodness, de- liver us from evil. O eternal Power, be thou our support. Eternal Wisdom, scatter the dark- ness of our ignorance. Eternal Pity, have mercy upon us. Grant unto us that with all our hearts, and minds, and strength, we may evermore seek thy face; and finally bring us, in thine infinite mercy, to thy holy presence. So strengthen our weakness that, following in the footsteps of thy blessed Son, we may obtain mercy, and enter intc thy promised joy. Amen. FORGIVENESS FOR Our NEGLECT O God, who sendest thy Son to come in his glory, and all the angels with him; to sit upon 158 General Prapers the throne of his glory; before whom all the nations shall be gathered for judgment: how shall we stand before that tribunal? We have taken thy Son’s name upon our lips, but we have darkened his Calvary by our neglect of those for whom he died. Our indifference has weak- ened the influence of righteousness in the world. Our thoughtlessness has left men to struggle vainly by themselves, when a word from us might have saved the day. Our cowardice has kept us from speaking out what others needed to brace them for the battle. Our sloth and self-indulgence have crippled good causes, be- cause we have been unwilling to support them. Brothers have lain suffering in our path, while we have passed by on the other side. Our eyes have beheld thee—hungry, athirst, and a stran- ger, naked, sick, and in prison—but we have not ministered to thee. We have not delivered them that are carried away unto death, nor held back those that are ready to be slain. Our brothers’ blood crieth unto thee from the ground. And forasmuch as we cannot change our past, we beseech thee to change our hearts, forgiving us, and filling us with a holy love. Transform us by the power of thy saving grace, from sources of evil into forces for good, that with all our might we may fight the wrongs we have aided, and aid the right we have clogged. Grant us this boon, that for every harm we have done, we may do some brave act of salvation; and that for every soul that has stumbled or fallen through us, we may bring to thee some other weak or despairing one whose strength has been General Prayers 159 renewed by our love; that so the face of thy Christ may smile upon us, and the light within us may shine undimmed. Amen. LOWLINESS AND PEACE Grant unto us, Almighty God, of thy good Spirit, that quiet heart and that patient lowli- ness to which thy comforting Spirit comes; that we, being humble toward thee, and loving toward one another, may have our hearts pre- pared for that peace which passeth understand- ing: which if we have, the storms of life can hurt us but little, and the cares of life vex us not at all, in the presence of which death shall lose its sting, and the grave its terror: and we, in calm joy, walk all the days of our appointed time, until our great change shall come. Amen. FREEDOM O God, let the sighing of the prisoner come before thee, and mercifully grant unto us that we may be delivered by thine almighty power from all bonds and chains of sin, whether in our bodies or in our souls, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. GOODWILL O God of patience and consolation, give us such goodwill, we beseech thee, that with free hearts we may love and serve thee and our brethren; and, having thus the mind of Christ, may begin heaven on earth, and exercise our- selves therein till that day when heaven, where 160 General Prapers love abideth, shall seem no strange habitation to us. For Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen. ILLUMINATION Almighty and everlasting God, the source of all life and joy, who by the glad sound of the gospel hast called us to have part in thy king- dom and glory; shine powerfully into our hearts, we beseech thee, that we may heartily choose that good part which shall not be taken away from us, and give diligence to make our calling and election sure, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Tue Licut or Lire O thou who art the true sun of the world, evermore rising, and never going down; who, by thy most wholesome appearing and sight, dost nourish, and make joyful all things, as well that are in heaven as also that are on earth: we beseech thee mercifully and favorably to shine into our hearts: that the night and dark- ness of sin, and the mists of terror on every side being driven away, thou brightly shining within our hearts, we may all our life long go without any stumbling or offense, walking as in the daytime, being pure and clean from the works of darkness, and abounding in all good works which thou hast prepared for us to walk. in. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. BEATITUDE O God, from whom cometh down every good and perfect gift, hear us when we humbly ask General Prapeis 161 of thee those blessings which thy Son has prom- ised to all who are his true disciples: Make us poor in spirit, that ours may be the kingdom of heaven. Make us to mourn for sin, that we may be comforted by thy grace. Make us meek, that we may inherit the earth. Make us to hunger and thirst after righteous- ness, that we may be filled therewith. Make us merciful, O Lord, that we may ob- tain mercy. Make us pure in heart, that we may see thee our God. Make us peacemakers, that we may be called thy children. Make us willing to be persecuted for right- eousness’ sake, that our reward may be in heaven. O thou fountain of grace and of truth, who hast called us out of darkness into the marvel- lous light of the gospel of thy dear Son; grant us grace to walk worthy of this our vocation, in all lowliness and meekness of mind, endeavor- ing to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace, that our fruit may be unto holiness and the end everlasting life. Amen. Divine Hep Almighty and merciful God, who dost grant unto thy faithful people the grace to make every path of life temporal, the straight and narrow way which leadeth unto life eternal, grant that we, who know that we have no strength as of ourselves, and therefore do put all our trust in 162 General Prapers thine almighty power, may, by the assistance of thy heavenly grace, always prevail in all things, against whatsoever shall arise to fight against us; through Jesus Christ. Amen. _ RIGHTEOUSNESS OF LIFE O Lord, who knowest what is best for us, give us what thou wilt and. deal with us in all things as seemeth good unto thee. Give us a clean and innocent heart, purity of speech, in- tegrity of life. Give us humility, patience, self- denial, prudence, justice, courage, temperance. Give us the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and strength, the spirit of knowledge, of goodness and of thy fear. Make us ever to love thee with all our heart, and soul, and strength, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves; to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thee, waiting in hope and patience for the coming of our master, that we may give in our account with joy. Amen. DatLty GRACE O God, from whom we have received life and all earthly blessings, vouchsafe to give unto us each day what we need: give unto all of us strength to perform faithfully our appointed tasks; bless the work of our hands and of our minds. Grant that we may ever serve thee in sickness and in health, in necessity and in abundance; sanctify our joys and our trials; and give us grace to seek first thy kingdom and @eneral Prapers 163 its righteousness, in the sure and certain faith that all else shall be added unto us. Amen. PROTECTION FROM EVIL O God, thou who hast been mindful of us and loaded us with benefits, continue thy mercy to thy children. Give us grace peacefully to serve thee day by day in our station and place in life. Amid the snares and temptations of the world, protect our weakness with thy never-failing love. Keep us from harm within us and with- out us; from the evil that is in ourselves; from the evil in the world around us; from all selfish, uncharitable, and impure thoughts; from all hard and bitter words; from doing that which should not be done, and from leaving undone that which should be done. Keep us in the con- stant sense of our membership in Christ, in the thought that we are his soldiers and servants, in the love of our Father’s house, and in the blessed hope of our eternal home. Amen. STRENGTH Let thy gospel, O Lord, come unto us now, not in word only, but in power and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance: by it may we be guided into all truth, and strengthened unto all cbedience and enduring of thy will with joyful- ness; so that abounding in the work of faith, the labor of love, and the patience of hope, we may finally be made meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 164 General Prayers Ricgut Use or. TIME O Lord, in whose hands are life and death, by whose power we are sustained, and by whose mercy we are spared, look down upon us with pity. Forgive us that we have until now so much neglected the duties which thou hast as- signed to us, and suffered the days and hours of which we must give account to pass away with- out any endeavor to accomplish thy will. Make us to remember, O God, that every day is thy gift, and ought to be used according to thy command. Grant us, therefore, so to repent of our negligence that we may obtain mercy from thee, and pass the time which thou shalt yet allow us in the diligent performance of thy commands, through Jesus Christ. Amen. DILIGENCE O God, who by the example of thy dear Son hast warned us that we should work thy works while it is day, before the night cometh, when no man can work, keep us from all sloth and idleness, and from the misuse of those talents which thou hast committed to our trust. Enable us to perform the several duties of our calling with such care and diligence that our work thay never be reproved in thy sight; and forasmuch as the needful business of this life is apt to steal away our hearts from thee, give us grace to remember that we have a master in heaven, and to do everything in singleness of heart as unto thee and not unto men, that of thee we may receive. the reward of the inheritance which thou General Prapers 165 hast promised in thy Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. MINISTERS OF THE GOSPEL Almighty God, who hast made thy Son to be head over all things to the Church, and hast set within the Church, some to be apostles and some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers: en- dow with thy Divine Spirit, we beseech thee, those who have received this ministry. Grant unto them, O most merciful Father, such full- ness of thy grace, that they may be faithful and wise stewards whom thou settest over thy household, using the authority thou givest them not to wield lordship over the faith of their brethren, but to be helpers of their joy; that they may be able ministers of the New Testa- ment, knowing how they ought to behave them- selves in the house of God, workmen that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth; faithful leaders of the blind and of them that are out of the way; lights unto those who are in darkness; watchful guardians over thy fold; followers of the true Shepherd who giveth his life for the sheep. Make their feet beautiful to publish the gospel of peace, and to bring glad tidings of good things. Give them power to preach not themselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and themselves the servants of all for Jesus’ sake. May they be examples to the believers, in word, in conversation, in char- ity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. So may they in all things fulfil their ministry unblameably 166 General Prayers and unreprovably in thy sight, that they may be prepared to stand without shame before the judgment seat of Christ, and thus, finishing their course with joy, be received into glory and immortality in thine eternal kingdom, where they that turn many to righteousness shall shine as the stars for ever and ever. Hear us for the sake of Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen. MISSIONARIES Hear our prayer, we beseech thee, O Lord, as we cry unto thee for the salvation of all men everywhere who know thee not. Open their eyes, and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive remission of sins and an inheritance among them that are sanctified by faith in Jesus Christ. Bless, we entreat thee, all missionaries of the cross; defend them from all adversaries and all mischance; from weariness and _ loneli- ness; from discouragement and faintness of heart. Sustain their bodies and minds and spirits with thy sufficient grace, as of old; and may they see a good reward of all their labor. ‘Bless also, we pray, the congregations gathered out of the heathen: make them fountains of blessing and beacons of light. Bless all men everywhere who name thy name and who carry thy Gospel of Life to this hungry world. And may thy word in their hands not return unto thee void, but accomplish the purposes of thy nnn LEE General Prapers 167 a Kingdom, for thy Son, Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen. MissIons Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we thank thee for the blessed gift of Jesus Christ thy Son. We thank thee that in him all mankind shall become one in faith and hope and love, and through him find their way at last to thee. We thank thee that thou hast called us who are citizens of this Republic and members of thy Church, to be fellow-workers with thee in the establishment of thy Kingdom. May this country, purged of its iniquities and sanctified by thy righteous Spirit, be thy servant among the nations of the world. Take from our midst all selfish pride and cruel greed, all the bitterness of class and race, all injustice, malice and indifference, and whatever may hinder the doing of thy holy will; that thou alone mayest rule in the hearts of this people. May thy Church be quickened by thy Holy Spirit to labor for the victory of thy rule of holy love, in all the earth. Inspire us thy people with the boldness of thy vision for us; and at- tend with thy blessing the good tidings of thy constant love and thy redeeming grace which we send around the world in thy name. Hasten the time when multitudes of every nation, and of all tribes and peoples and tongues, raised to new life and liberty by the proclamation of the Gospel, shall stand joyfully before thy throne, and join with us in the glad acclaim of salvation through Jesus Christ. Amen. eee eae Peer NE eA Ae oo 168 General Prayers neem THE FountAIN oF LIFE O Jesus, living Jesus, Fountain of love that never faileth, help us thy servants to receive thy love for ourselves, and in some way to realize it, and to grow in the knowledge of it day by day and year by year. O Jesus, living Jesus, living Fountain of all beauty, the Fairest among ten thousand, may we receive of thy fulness grace for grace, and be satisfied when we awake in thy likeness. O Jesus, living Jesus, living Fountain of living waters, boundless Source of abundant life, give us to lay hold on the life which is life indeed, the eternal and abundant life which is in thee, and may be ours in thee. Amen. VOCATION O God, who art our Guide and Governor, who hast promised to direct the ways of those who acknowledge thee: we offer thee our thanks that thou dost not leave us alone to struggle and grope our way through the wilderness of life. Thou callest each one of us to redemption and safety in Jesus Christ: may there be none of us here in thy presence this day who shall fail to hear and heed that call. Thou callest us each to some service in thy Kingdom among the chil- dren of men: may there be none of us in this house to-day who shall refuse to answer the voice that says, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? And when thy last call for us shall come, and thou dost summon us in death, may we run joyfully, as those who hear a be- aa, General Prapers 169 loved voice welcoming them, to enter the door of a longed-for home. Amen. Waukine WitH Gop O God, who keepest covenant and lovingkind- ness with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart: grant, we beseech thee, that we may walk faithfully before thee all our days. We thank thee that Jesus Christ came to walk with us. May we find in him our companion by the way, speaking burning words into our hearts. And may we joyfully accompany him through darkness and light, through sickness and health, through prosperity and poverty, by duty and pleasure, in evil report and good re- port, beside the green pastures and still waters and amid the valley of the shadow of death: until he bring us home to our Father’s house in peace. Amen. Ricgut User oF SCRIPTURE Blessed Lord, who hast caused all holy Scrip- ture to be written for our learning: grant that -we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by pa- tience and comfort for thy holy word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. AFTER PREACHING Grant, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that the words which we have heard this day with our outward ears, may through thy grace be so 170 General Prapers grafted inwardly in our hearts that they may bring forth in us the fruit of good living, to the honor and praise of thy name: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. TuoseE WuHo Dovust We entreat thee, O Lord, holy Father, Al- mighty and everlasting God, grant that the way of thy truth, and the knowledge of thee, may be shown to thy servants who wander in doubt and uncertainty amid the darkness of this world; that their eyes may be opened, and that they may acknowledge thee, the one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and may enjoy the fruit of this confession both here and in the world to come: through Jesus Christ. Amen. LOYALTY We thank thee, Lord Jesus, that thou hast permitted us to range ourselves on thy side, to take thy name for our watchword, thy cross for our banner, thy Kingdom for our objective. May we so whole-heartedly identify ourselves with thy cause that the world will never be able to mistake our position. Thou hast called us friends, and hast made known to us thy pur- poses: may these purposes become our aims. May thy enemies be ours, thy friends ours, thy defeats and thy victories ours, and all that we have, thine. Amen. THE GOSPEL Thou, O God, hast given us the rich heritage of the Gospel. We thank thee that this gospel @eneral Prapers 171 is at once so simple that by it a little child can find thee and the way so clear that the way- faring man, though a fool, need not err therein: and yet withal so deep and so unsearchable that the wisest of men can not exhaust it or get to the bottom of it, but will ever be as scholars learning to think thy thoughts after thee. Give us more and more of the mind of Christ. Help us more and more deeply to penetrate into the truth of the gospel; and so illuminate our under- standings, we beseech thee, that we may see more and more clearly the applications of the truth of the gospel to the complex life of the day in which we are called to live. Enrich us with the spiritual gifts of knowledge and utterance, thus making us more and more fit to be the ambassadors of thy reconciling grace. Send out thy light and thy truth, that evermore they may lead us. For Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen. UNITY OF CHRISTENDOM O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only Savior, the Prince of Peace; give us grace seriously to lay to heart the great dangers we are in by reason of our unhappy divisions. Take away all hatred and prejudice, and what- soever else may hinder us from godly union and concord; that as there is but one body and one Spirit, and one hope of our calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, so we may all be of one heart and of one soul, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith, and charity, and may with one bee General Prayers mind and one mouth glorify thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. | Our CouNTRY Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage, we humbly beseech thee that we may always prove a people mindful of thy favor, glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord and confusion; from pride and arrogancy, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties; pre- serve our unity; fashion into one happy people the multitudes brought hither out of many kin- dreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy name we entrust: the authority of government, to the end that there be justice and peace at home, ‘and that through obedience to thy law we show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity fill our hearts with thankful- ness, and in the day of trouble suffer not our trust in thee to fail; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE PREACHING OF THE GOSPEL Cause thy Church to arise and shine, O Lord, and let her ministers be clothed with righteous- . ness and salvation; that thy word which is in their hands may not return unto thee void, but have free course and be glorified in the world: prospering in the thing whereunto thou hast sent it, and prevailing mightily to turn men from darkness to light, and from the power of General Prapers 173 sin unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and inheritance among them who are sanctified by faith that is in Christ: to whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, world without end. Amen. Tue Kina’s HIGHWAY O Lord our Lord, as men of old prepared in the wilderness highways for their kings to pass over: so we beseech thee, help us with greater loving fervor than they, to prepare a highway for the King of Kings, who ever enters the world over the ways of human life and character. May we make ready for him by filling up the deficiencies that have characterized us, with in- creased zeal and loving service; by levelling off the hard swellings of pride and conceit and self- righteousness; by straightening out the tortuous curves of dishonesty and insincerity; by cover- ing all with a gracious finishing of kindliness and patience and light. Then come, O Lord, over thine own highway; through these lives of ours, enter the whole life of mankind; till all flesh shall see the salvation of God. Amen. STANDARDS OF SUCCESS O Lord, Giver of all grace: give us, we entreat thee, such patriotism and such unselfishness of heart, that we may have the same standards of success in life as did thy servant Nehemiah, who could not be content with his own eminence or wealth, while the city of his fathers’ sepul- chres lay waste and his fellow-citizens suffered affliction and reproach. May we not be content 174 General Prapers to have gained any blessings for ourselves if in our gaining of them the lives of our fellows have not also been made rich. May we use every power, every talent, every advantage that we have in the social service of thy Kingdom, and ever be willing to save our lives by losing them, in the spirit of Jesus Christ our crucified Redeemer. Amen. Gop Our ENVIRONMENT Father in heaven, who art not far from any one of us—nearer to us than breathing, closer than hands or feet—help us not to look away from thee for the best things of life. Thou art our Rock and our Fortress, a very present help in time of trouble. Thou hast beset us behind and before, and layest thine hand upon us. Rescue us from the misery of groundless fears and restless apprehensions. Draw near to us and make thy presence real within us. As thy readiness to help precedes our sense of danger, may the consciousness that thou art our environ- ment prevail to drive anxiety from our minds and evil from our hearts. Amen. THosE WuHo Come Arter Us O God, we pray thee for those who come after us, for our children, and the children of our friends, and for all the young lives that are marching up from the gates of birth, pure and eager, with the morning sunshine on their faces. We remember with a pang that these will live in the world we are making for them. We are wasting the resources of the earth in our head- General Prapers 175 long greed, and they will suffer want. We are building sunless houses and joyless cities for our profit, and they must dwell therein. We are making the burden heavy and the pace of work pitiless, and they will fall wan and sobbing by the wayside. We are poisoning the air of our land by our lies and our uncleanness, and they will breathe it. O God, thou knowest how we have cried out in agony when the sins of our fathers have been visited upon us, and how we have struggled vainly against the inexorable fate that coursed in our blood or bound us in a prison-house of life. ‘Save us from maiming the innocent ones who come after us by the added cruelty of our sins. Help us to break the ancient force of evil by a holy and steadfast will and to endow our children with purer blood and nobler thoughts. Give us grace to leave the earth fairer than we found it; to build upon it cities of God in which the cry of needless pain shall cease; and to put the yoke of Christ upon our business life that it may serve and not destroy. Lift the veil of the future and show us the generation to come as it will be if blighted by our guilt, that our lust may be cooled and we may walk in the fear of the Eternal. Grant us a vision of the far-off years as they may be if redeemed by the sons of God, that we may take heart and do battle for thy children and ours. Amen. Tue Kinapom or Gop O Christ, thou hast bidden us pray for the coming of thy Father’s Kingdom, in which his 176 General Prayers righteous will shall be done on earth. We have treasured thy words, but we have forgotten their meaning, and thy great hope has grown dim in thy Church. We bless thee for the inspired souls of all ages who saw afar the shining city of God, and by faith left the profit of the present to follow their vision. We rejoice that to-day the hope of these lonely hearts is becoming the clear faith of millions. Help us, O Lord, in the courage of faith to seize what has now come so near, that the glad day of God may dawn at last. As we have mastered nature that we might gain wealth, help us now to master the social rela- tions of mankind, that we may gain justice and a world of brothers. For what shall it profit our nation if it gain numbers and riches, and lose the sense of the living God and the joy of human brotherhood? Make us determined to live by truth and not by lies, to found our common life on the eternal foundations of righteousness and love, and no longer to prop the tottering house of wrong by legalized cruelty and force. Help us to make the welfare of all the supreme law of our land, that so our commonwealth may be built strong and secure in the love of all its citizens. Cast down the throne of Mammon, who ever grinds the life of men, and set up thy throne, O Christ, for thou didst die that men might live. Show thy erring children at last the way from the City of Destruction to the City of Love, and fulfil the longings of the prophets of humanity. Our Master, once more we make thy faith our General Prapers 177 prayer: “Thy Kingdom come! Thy will be done on earth.” Amen. At EVENING OF THE Lorp’s Day O Lord, we would draw near to thee, with the closing of thy day. We praise thee for all its blessings, both in our homes and in thy house. We pray for all who have worshipped thee this day, that they may receive with us from thy bountiful hand those temporal and _ spiritual blessings with which thou enrichest thy children. Extend everywhere thy cause and kingdom, until all shall know thee from the least unto the greatest. If any have sought for thee this day, we entreat thee to reveal thyself unto them. Bless thy word, wherever it has been taught or preached, and pardon all our sins. And now, O our Father, we would put our- selves under the shadow of thy wings for the coming night. Defend us from all harm. Let thine angels encamp about us. Keep thou us in all our ways, and bring us at length unto our Father’s house in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Goop FRIDAY Lord Jesus Christ! Thou holy and spotless Lamb of God, who didst take upon thyself the curse of sin which was due unto us, with all the heavenly host of the redeemed, we unite in ascribing unto thee power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor and glory, and blessing. We bless thee for all the burdens thou hast borne, for all the tears thou hast wept, for a 178 General Prapers LS all the pains thou hast suffered, for every drop ‘of blood thou hast shed, for every word of comfort thou hast spoken on the cross, for every conflict with the powers of darkness, and for thine eternal victory over the terrors of death and the pains of hell. | O most merciful Father, who of thy tender compassion towards us, guilty sinners, didst give thine only begotten Son to be an offering for our sins, grant us grace, we humbly beseech thee, that, being engrafted into him by thy Spirit and made partakers of his sufferings and death, we may crucify the corrupt inclinations of the flesh, die daily unto the world, and lead holy and unblameable lives. Cleaving unto his cross in the temptations of life, may we hold fast the profession of our faith without waver- ing and finally attain unto the resurrection of the dead, through the merits of this same, once crucified, but now risen and exalted Savior. Amen. EASTER Almighty and ever-blessed God, who didst suffer thine only-begotten Son to die for our. sins, we praise thy great and glorious name that thou didst not leave his soul in death nor suffer thy holy one to see corruption; but didst highly exalt him, giving him a name which is above every name, and didst declare him to be the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead. Mercifully grant that we, having known the fellowship of his sufferings, may also know the power of his resurrection; that like as ne General Prayers 179 he was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also may walk in newness of life. Lift up our hearts that we may seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. And when at last he who is our life shall appear, then may we also appear with him in glory: through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. CHRISTMAS Almighty and eternal God, whom no man hath seen nor can.see, we bless thee that thou hast been pleased to manifest thyself unto us in Jesus Christ thy Son. We praise thee that in the fulness of time he came into this world and took upon him our human nature, that he might reveal to us thy love and bring us into fellowship with thee. Thanks be unto thee, O God, for this, thine unspeakable gift. Grant now, we beseech thee, that, rejoicing in the remembrance of his holy birth, we may welcome him in our hearts as our Savior and Lord. May his Spirit dwell in our souls and rule in our lives. May we give ourselves to him in gladness and gratitude, and show our desire to honor and serve him in the willing service of our fellowmen. And may the glad tidings of thy grace in Jesus Christ soon be proclaimed throughout all the world, to the praise of thy most holy name. Amen. THE OPENING OF SCHOOL O Lord God, our heavenly Father, lead us in these habit-forming first days’ of the new year 180 @eneral Prayers of activity, to desire earnestly thy help, without which we can succeed in nothing good. We remember that Jesus our Lord was once a school-boy, and we know how he grew in wis- dom and stature and in favor with God and men. May all the boys and girls who start anew this year, love him and grow as he did in wisdom and stature and favor with God and men, because like him they are opening their lives to the leading of thy Spirit of grace. Help them in the troublesome task, the lonesome hour, the losing game. Give them strength to form and to hold fast good habits of mind and spirit and body. Teach them to respect the wisdom, and love the beauty of righteousness. Be thou the teacher of all their teachers. Make them useful citizens of this Republic, and brave and loyal subjects of the Kingdom of Heaven. And may we who are older than they, thy chil- dren of a larger growth, remember that we too are scholars in thy school of life: may its lessons not fall on deaf ears and unreceptive hearts; may its discipline lead to a larger vision of thee and thy purposes for mankind. For Jesus’ sake. Amen. CLOSE OF THE YEAR Most gracious God, who hast been infinitely merciful to us, not only in the year past, but through all the years of our life, be pleased to accept our most unfeigned thanks for thine in- numerable blessings to us, graciously pardoning the manifold sins and. infirmities of our life past, and bountifully bestowing upon us all General Prapers 181 those graces and virtues which may render us acceptable to thee. Amen.
