modern artists of AMERICA ^ Inc. EXHIBITION BY MEMBERS APRIL 1 TO 30 - 1922 JOSEPH BRUMMER GALLERIES 43 EAST FIFTY-SEVENTH ST. - NEW YORK Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2016 https://archive.org/details/exhibitionbymembOOmode MODERN ARTISTS OF AMERICA ITH the present exhibition, a. new society, the Modern Artists of America, first comes before the public. The public will ask what need there is for a new art society in a community where there are already so many. Although there are many art societies in New York there has been none which has welcomed any variation from academic traditions, none where marked indiv- iduality could be shown. The time had come to gather together the various elements opposed to academic art, and the Modern Artists of America is the first society which has brought to- gether the forces opposed to the blind acceptance of tradition. No event in the art world, neither the opening exhibition of the Society of American Artists over forty years ago nor the Armory Show of 1913, nor even the Independent has seemed so important to the development of our art as the founding of the Modern Artists of America, and this is its first show. There can be no advance in art without experiment. The conservative artists have in the Academy a bulwark against all experimental art, against all change. The radical artists now have a society which, giving experimental art a place, cannot fail to influence profoundly the future of art. The spirit of life, of fearlessness, of joy, of restlessness which animates so much of the work of the younger men will be able to make itself felt. As life, with its constant change, is more attractive than death, the exhibi- tions of the Modern Artists of America will appear to every open mind more attractive than those of the various academic societies. In this movement lies all hope for the future of art in America. 3 Figures Ben Benn 4 Group 1 lioinas H.
