OFFICIAL CATALOGUE FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF THE FINE ARTS J , T" THE LEWIS AND CLARK CENTENNIAL EXPOSITION PORTLAND OREGON 1908 Official Catalogue FOR THE Department of the Fine Arts . Frank Vincent Du Mond, Chief SECTION A INCLUDING PAINTINGS IN OIL, WATER COLORS PASTELS, TOGETHER WITH MINIATURES, PICTURES IN PHOTOGRAPHY AND WORKS IN SCULPTURE dLl )e ictotc anti Clark Centennial Ca-position Portland, Oregon, 1905 H. W. Goode, President Henry E. Dosch, Director of Exhibits ALBERT HESS & COMPANY PUBLISHERS — fntrotiuctton /VING to the fact that the very large Exhibitions of the Fine Arts have necessarily contained a great prepon- derance of works which are of little interest or benefit to either the public, the connoisseur, the student or the artist, this Exhibit has been most carefully selected with a view to the highest standard of excellence as a primary object. The collection is characterized by a far higher percentage of works by masters than any art display of previous large expositions. Beginning with the Early English, French and Dutch schools, the Exhibit covers the entire ground in a most representative and instructive manner. All of the many and ever-changing ideas which have dominated and created the different schools are admirably set forth and their relationships to and influences upon each other illustrated in a manner seldom equaled. A remarkable feature of the contemporaneous painting is the completeness of the Exhibit of the School of Impressionists, in which the numerous painters are all represented by groups, ranging from two to six pictures each. The idea of groups has been carried throughout the entire Department of the Fine Arts, it being the most potent means of introducing the different art- ists in their various moods and of doing justice to . their versatility. The Exhibit arranged upon these lines offers advantages for enjoyment and study which cannot be overestimated. The collection of sculpture is almost entirely made up qf bronzes. Like the other works they have been very carefully selected and are the best 3 INTRODUCTION in that medium by many of our foremost American sculptors. The paintings in oil together with a very few pastels, water colors, miniatures, works in sculpture and a small group of pictures in photography are all included in Section A. Section B is made up of water colors, drawings, pastels, original illustrations and sketches in oil painted directly from nature. This is perhaps the first time that preliminary studies have ever been shown by the artists. They represent the founda- tions, research and inspirations for the finished pic- tures and are interesting revelations of artists’ atti- tudes toward their motives in nature and of their temperamental points of view. Section B is on exhibition in the galleries of the Museum of Art at Fifth and Taylor streets. 4 ^atnttngs GALLERY A HASSAM, CHILDE — Born in Boston, Mass.. 1859.
