PERRY, M-ARWICK LANE. INTRODUCTION. The Pictures in this Gallery were collected by Mr. Noel Desenfans, a picture dealer in London, who was employed by Stanislaus, King of Poland, to make a collection of paintings for him. In con- sequence of the dismemberment of Poland, many of these pictures remained in the hands of Mr. Desenfans, and he dying in 1807, bequeathed them to his friend. Sir Peter Francis Bourgeois, Knt. r.a. Sir P. F. Bourgeois was born in London in 1756, and although his early destination was the army, his passion for painting led him to devote himself entirely to that study, and to relinquish all thoughts of the military profession. In the pursuit of his favourite occupation, he travelled in 1776 through Italy, France, and Holland, and on his return to England exhibited several specimens of his studies at the Royal Academy. In 1791 he was appointed Painter to the King of Poland, whose brother the Prince Primate had been much pleased with his perfor- mances during his residence in England; and from that Sovereign Sir F. Bourgeois received the Knight- hood of the Order of Merit, afterwards confirmed to INTRODUCTION. him by George the Third, who, in 1794, appointed him his Landscape Painter. In 1792, he was elected a member of the Royal Academy. It appears to have been the anxious desire of Sir Francis Bourgeois to keep his Collection entire and undivided after his death, and for that purpose he left them to Dulwich as a permanent institution, having some acquaintance with the Rev. Robert Corry, one of the Fellows of that College. Sir Francis Bourgeois died January 8th, 1811, bequeathing his pictures to the Master, Warden, and Fellows of Dulwich College, with funds for building a Gallery, and defraying the necessary expences attendant upon the due care and preser- vation of the paintings. Sir John Soane was em- ployed as Architect on this occasion, and the build- ing completed in 1814. In a Mausoleum attached to the Gallery are depo- sited the remains of Sir P. F. Bourgeois, with those of his friends Mr. and Mrs. Desenfans. t CATALOGUE OF THE PICTURES. FIRST ROOM.
