GEISWEILER, No. 42, Parliament Street, Westminster, where Catalogues are to be had gratis, By George Sidney, Black Horse Court, Fleet Street. — — *o©e©il<®oe©«— — 1801. m Cd-d 1 (A fc\_ A THE follozving ancient Collection of Paintings at Hamburg, was begun in the early part of the eighteenth century, and continued by Mr. Stenglin, a man acknowledged by every one zvho understood the Arts to possess as much taste as knozdedge. — He only made choice of those pieces which were in good preservation, and by the most celebrated Masters. — This collection was constantly visited by Amateurs and Artists, both domestic and foreign, and ever received their warmest approbations.— After this declaration it would be needless to enumerate each particular per- fection in these paintings. Any Amateur, desirous of sending Orders for the purchase of any of them, need not fear their falling short of his expectation. Respecting the measure, from No. 1 to 194 , the great, or Brabant foot, is made use of-, from 195 to the end, the small or Hamburg measure. The difference between the measure is as 5 to 6 , or 5 large Br ab ant er feet to 6 Hamburg, or Holstein feet. A CATALOGUE, &c. JVo. i Giacomo Robusti- detto il Tintoretto . 'Height 3 feet 8 inches. Breadth 2 feel 8 inches. This Painting represents St Sebastian, bound to a tree, and pierced through with an arrow. His expressive and dejected countenance shews the hand of an able master. — Upon the whole the design is beautiful; the colouring strong and pleasing to the eye. — Upon canvas. Venus in a muscle shell, drawn by Dolphins, and Cupid reclining with an arch look, on her lap. — The design is noble throughout,' the figures enchanting, and the colouring in the highest degree attracting to connoisseurs-. — On copper. JVo. 4 Lodovico Lione. Height 1 foot 8 inches. Breadth 2 foot. A Landscape, with Cattle, &c. One of the few fine pieces in this line from an Italian master. Sophonisea, in a gloomy and melancholy attitude, on receiving the news, that she was to chuse the manner of her own death. The one represents Bacchus and Adriamne, and the other the History of Meleagar, as a companion. Both are adorned with 3 variety of allegorical figures. In his right hand he holds a pair of spectacles, and is in the attitude of reflection. Art and nature unite in this piece to do honour to the artist. — U pon canvas. No. 23 Johann Breugel. Height 1 foot, Breadth 1 foot 7 inches. A Landscape. Three waggons descending a hill towards a village. At the foot of the hill are some peasants dancing. The storm, accompanied with thunder and lightning, drives a fishing-boat, which is attempting to gain the shore, with others, into the open sea. A Female kneeling, with a plaintive mien, before an officer, who is listening to her complaint. Near her two old men are standing. 1 his picture is finely imagined. Upon wood. Height 2 feet 1 inch, Breadth 1 feet 8 inches. Two Landscapes; the one represents a road leading to a thick wood, where two ladies are sitting to rest themselves ; at a distance are two peasants. The companion represents a road leading to a hill ; near the road flows a small brook. A couple of the best productions of this master. — Upon canvas. No. 48 and 49 Peter Molyn. Height 1 foot 2 inches. Breadth 1 foot 10 inches. . The first of these pieces is a representation of Winter, rich in the pastimes of the season. This beautiful piece was painted in 1657. Xhe second, rich in figures, deserves also attention. — Upon wood. No. 50 Adam Synacker. Height 1 foot 1 1 inches, Breadth 1 foot 8 inches. Before a thick wood, a Peasant’s cart, with two oxen, is loading with dead game. The pleasing calm, and beautiful evening, give this piece peculiar attractions. — Upon canvas. No. 51 David Beck, one of the best scholars of Anton van Dyk. Three-quarter length, large as life, Height 4 feet. Breadth 3 feet 9 inches. The Portrait of a General. In the right hand he holds a truncheon, the left rests on his sword. The position is noble and easy, the colouring lively. — Upon canvas. No. 52 Peter Neeffs. Height 9 inches, Breadth 1 foot 1 inch. The Inside of a Church of Gothic structure, with many figures. A Company of Peasants, -drinking and playing at drafts, &c. finished in 1659, by this much-esteemed master. — Upon wood. No. 56 and 57 Jacob van der Does. In both these fine Landscapes, which are companions, ruins, cattle, and sheep are seen with shepherds and other Peasants, country dwellings, &c. — Upon canvas. No. 58 and 59 Nicolas Berghem. Height 1 foot 2 inches, Breadth 1 fool. In the first of these Landscapes, a peasant is represented leaning against an ox, with other cattle scattered around. In the second is a lady on horseback, with a falcon in her hand; a gentleman dismounted from a white horse stands near her. A dark cloud, which obscures the sun, has a very fine effect. — Upon canvas. 1 ( 12 ) No. 6 o Jurian Ovens. Half figures. Height 3 feet 10 inches , Breadth 3 feet. The Virgin Mary, seated, and presenting the child Jesus to Simeon, who bows before her. The splendor from the child enlightens the whole piece. Beauty of design and strong colouring render this piece not unworthy the pencil of Rembrandt, whose scholar Ovens was. — Upon canvas. No. 6i, Anton Goebouw. . . The one is about to drink, the other is reading. These figures, with the suitable accompaniments of a room in a country ale-house, are excellently imagined. — Upon canvas. No. 75 Mathias Stom. Height 1 foot. Breadth 1 foot 9 inches. An Evening Prospect in a rural country, with the return of a hunting party, particularly well executed. — Upon wood. No. 7 6 and 77 Johann Weeninx. Height 3 Jeet 10 inches, Breadth 2 feed inches. A dead Hare, A turkey, flowers and fruit, are particularly fine, and most naturally executed. In the fore-ground of this Landscape a peasant is felling a tree. The distant mountainous country is particularly fine. Various Cattle and Shepherds, standing in the water. The setting sun is finely illumined, and the whole hemisphere is in a delightful glow. In the Companion is a lime-kiln, burning by moonlight. This charming Landscape was painted in 1691, in which the last .rays of ■the setting sun may be considered a master-piece. Two females are carrying flowers, and a man lying upon the ground, in peaceful and plea- sant contemplation. No. 84 Gerhard Hoet. Height 1 foot 7 inches. Breadth 1 foot 10 inches. A Sacrifice, near the bust of a young fawn, on an obelisk. This rich com- position of the numerous figures, in a pleasant country, and the admi- rable execution and soft colouring, is a convincing proof that this piece is one of the most excellent productions of this imitator of Poulemburg.— Upon canvas. In the fore-ground of a terrace are various kinds of poultry, among which are many curious and beautiful birds. In the first of these Landscapes a peasant is sitting on a mule. The former is natural and easy, the colouring warm and pleasing, and the other objects equally well expressed. A traveller with a dog is observed in the second. • 102 Arnold Iloubracketi. Height 1 foot 4 inches, Breadth 1 foot 2 inches. The Adoration of the Shepherds, in which imagination, design, and. colouring, are entitled to great praise.— Upon wood. ( 18 ) No. 103 Nicolas Verkolye. Height 2 feet 2 inches, Breadth 1 foot 1 1 inchest A Young Woman, sitting at a table, on which are fruit and oysters, hold- ing a glass in her hand.
