 Tublic Art gallery 
 
 This art collection belongs to the City of Dallas, and it is with 
 pride, justified by the achievement, that this account of how it 
 came to be is here presented. 
 
 The organization of the Dallas Art Association had its incep- 
 tion in the minds of the art committee of the Public Library. In 
 planning the library building Frank Keaugh, a well-known Texas 
 artist, suggested that a room be properly lighted and arranged for 
 an art gallery. This room when completed was most gratifying 
 and attractive. 
 
 A member of the building committee, the late Mr. J. S. Arm- 
 strong, became so interested in procuring pictures that he offered 
 to give one-half of any amount that could be raised for the purpose 
 within a year. In 1902, following the close of the State Fair, 
 Mrs. Sidney Smith, superintendent of the Loan Exhibition of Art, 
 brought here by the Fair Association, arranged, with the assistance 
 of the art committee, composed of the following members, Mrs. 
 George K. Meyer, Mrs. Henry Exall and Mrs. J. E. Schneider, an 
 exhibition, to be held in the "New Art Gallery," to which an ad- 
 mission fee of twenty-five cents was charged. 
 
 Two pictures were purchased from this first exhibition, chosen 
 by popular vote. The pictures selected were ^'My Gondolier's 
 Kitchen," by Herbeit Faulkner, and "September Moonrise," by 
 Childe Hassam. Frank Keaugh presented one of his pictures of 
 western life, "The Koad to the Brazos," and the young gallery was 
 also honored bv Gustave Wolff giving his landscape, "The Road 
 to the Creek." ' 
 
 In January, 1903, IMrs. Henry Exall, President of the Board 
 of Trustees of the Public Library, called for a meeting of all those 
 interested in an ait gallery for Dallas. About fifty citizens re- 
 sponded, and the Dallas Art Association was organized. The plan

 of organization was to get as many people interested as possible, 
 and as many as would, to subscribe five dollars or more a year for 
 the support of the Association. Eighty memberships were taken. 
 These subscribers met and elected a board of twenty-one trustees 
 to act as the executive body, the trustees electing the officers. The 
 first Officers and Board of Trustees were as follows :

 In the spring of 1903 Mrs, Henry Exall presented one thou- 
 sand dollars, the gift of the late Mrs. A. H. Belo. January, 1904, 
 Mr. Armstrong presented five hundred dollars, fulfilling his 
 promise made the art committee of the Public Library. 
 
 In 1904 Mr. Clifton Church succeeded Mrs. Dexter as Presi- 
 dent, holding office until 1906. 
 
 1907, Mrs. A. V. Lane succeeded Mr. Church. 
 
 1908, Mrs. T. L. Westerfield. 
 
 1909, Mrs. George K. Meyer. Mrs. Meyer has been unani- 
 mously re-elected to the Presidency each succeeding year. 
 
 In 1909 the Dallas Fair Association completed the Fine Arts 
 Building at Fair Park. The Art Gallery in the Public Library 
 had grown to such proportions under the administration of such 
 sincere, earnest and efficient workers there was need of a larger 
 gallery. 
 
 Municipal ambition and public-spirited vision prompted the 
 Art Association to open negotiations with the City whereby the 
 Gallery would be recognized as a permanent institution, and the 
 public be given a better opportunity to enjov its benefits. Arrans^e- 
 ments were made with the Park Board to place the collection in the

 Fine Arts Building at Fair Park, the same to become the property 
 of the City of Dallas. The contract with the City was signed in 
 March 1909; Hon. S. J. Hay, Mayor, and Mr. M. Baker of the 
 Park Board acting for the City; Mrs. T. L. Westerfield and Mrs. 
 J. E. Cockrell for the Art Association. April 17, 1909, the collec- 
 tion was formally presented to the City, Mrs. Meyer acting for the 
 Association, Mr. Charles Gillespie receiving them on behalf of the 
 City. 
 
 The Association is entirely dependent on voluntary contribu- 
 tions, and is supported by its membership, to which all are eligible 
 upon payment of the yearly dues.
