Season Ticket, 50 Cents. CL. k a library NO. M.KNOEDLER & CO, 3 2- 556-8 Fifth Ave. ACC. New York 4 * ■ . . TO PATRONS OF ART. The undersigned has pleasure in announcing to all patrons and lovers of Art, that he has now on Exhibition at the Academy of Design, corner of 23d Street and Fourth Avenue, and will shortly submit to Public Sale, through the Messrs. Leavitt, this, the largest and finest Collection of Paintings, of the Modern, French, German and Belgian Schools that was ever brought to this country. It comprises nearly 400 Paintings, by the most renowned Foreign Artists, all original, and of the most recent dates, selected by himself from the Studios in European Art Centres, and from the most celebrated Foreign Dealers, including the entire importation of Messrs. P. L. Everard & Co., of 51 Bedford Square, London. The names of most of the Artists are a sufficient guarantee of the excellence of their productions, while a few among them—fresh, perhaps, to the generality of American Connoisseurs—will be found of such excel¬ lence as to warrant the rapid spread of their fame at home, and have been selected with an especial view to their growing popularity. This is a point especially worthy of the attention of American purchasers; many Artists of sterling genius, whose works may be comparatively unknown in this country to-day, being destined, in a very short time, as has been the case with many recently, to find their productions doubled and trebled in value. Respecting those famous Artists who already hold a well-established Ame¬ rican reputation, it may be safely said that they are all well represented in this collection, while, in some instances, are to be found works of individual Painters superior to any productions of theirs ever yet seen in America. The undersigned is induced to hope that Art Lovers will find in the present Collection even more objects of worth and attraction than in his for¬ mer one at the Academy of Design two years ago, which was so largely admired and appreciated. This Sale will be a bona fide one, at which each Painting will be actu¬ ally sold to the highest bidder, and it may therefore be long before pur¬ chasers can find such another opportunity for becoming possessed of high- class Works of Art. H. W. DERBY. 817 Broadway, New York. ARE NOW ON EXHIBITION AT THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF DESIGN l»d STREET AND 4th AVENUE, And will remain on view Day and Evening, until Saturday, December 7, except such as may be removed for sale, commenc¬ ing Tuesday, December 3. Admission, Twenty-five cents ; Season Ticket, Fifty cents. THE SALE WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE ASTOR PLACE AND EIGHTH STREET, In order to promote the convenience and comfort of buyers, a limited number of seats will be reserved for their use, application for which should be made to the Auctioneers at once, by letter or personally. Please preserve this Catalogue for your use at the Sale. SPECIAL. In order to offer every facility to purchasers the owners have determined to offer the following TERMS OF SALE. The most specious and the most suc¬ cessful mefcpoo exposed in that article was the sale of foreign pictures, where, under the fl ig, so to speak, of some first-class well-known pic¬ tures, an immense amount of rubhish was dis¬ posed of at absurdly high rates, through the in¬ strumentality of touts, who made false bids. The article in question created consider¬ able comment, but many of our readers have informed us that they do not quite comprehend the modus operandi, and would lake the swindle to be illustrated by an actual example. We now give it. Ia the b? - ginning of December—on Monday, the 3d, and on four following days—there was an auction sale of pictures belonging to Mr. Derby and Mr. Everard. The paintings had been exhibited for ! three weeks previously at the Academy of De¬ sign, and catalogues had been sold in which the specific statement was made that the sale would be a bona-fide transaction, and that each picture would be knocked down to the highest bidder. The works themselves were mostly French, German, and Belgian ; there was a good sprinkling of pictures by well- known artists, but out of the whole 400 three- fourths were decidedly pictures of young, un- ' known men, or of painters of little reputation and less talent. They were, in a word, cheap. They were such things as dealers buy by the score at an average rate of $12 or 15 apiece. Saudwiched gamongjl these were the I ^vorks of Bougeretu, of Perrault. Bakaio- wiez, Fromeutin, Diaz, Levy, Ziem, Verboeck- boven, Ittenbucb, Pecrus, Brillouin, Baugniot, Escoeum, Prayer, Meissomcr. >nd others who , are well known to every person in the least in- j terested in art. These paintings were but the ’/ bait to get rid of the trash. Now this, though | not a very high-minded proceeding, had noth¬ ing dishonest in it; but the manner in which the decoy pictures were kept from purchasers, and the pnees of the trash intolerably raised, was downright swindling. Some person in the interest of the owners of the pictures went round and hired men to come to the auction sales every night and make ficti¬ tious bids. A little picture^ worth some f35 would be put up, A gentleman fancying it would bid for it. These men of straw would bid furiously against him, and if he persevered it | v$>nld he knocked down to him for $200 or $300 It may be < nought ttaafc a man would not give more for a picture than he believed it to be‘ worth, but gentlemen engaged J» business are tpo modest to trust their own osf?ma,te, and when they hear the furious eompetltioB, (all false,; suppose that the picture which pleases ■ so many must be valuable, and that, should they desire to sell it at any time, they would have no difficulty m getting something like the Di-ice bid. The spirit of emulation does the rest. The same plan is resorted to in the case of the decoy pictures, for their usefulness Is not exhausted by one sale. It stands to common sense, that, where such means ’ are used to sell poor pictnrcs at monstrous f prices, not many will be sold in one city. So j the collection will have to travel to another. ! and the decoys are wanted for the exhibition, aud to excite the public interest and obtain favorable comment from the public Press. This was the case with the Derby collection. After it had passed through the New-York sieve, and much trash had been disposed of at immense prices, it went to Philadelphia, and was there exhibited as the collection of Mr. Everard. Now the d^coy pictures, which had been knocked dowu to the humbug bids of the touts, and had been apparently sold in good faith to the high¬ est bidder, according to Mr. Derby’s declara¬ tion in the preface of his catalogue, came forth ! blooming a« ever, answered their former! end, and were again disposed of in the same false way. To m^ke the swindle palpable, ! buyouts. the shadow of a doubt, we give a list of some of the most famous pictures which were so manipulated, with the sums thev fetched at New-York, and afterward at Pblladei- j phia, begging our readers to remember that all tue honest bids for them were squelched by the touts, who would have run er n picture up to millious rather than have allowed it to be knocked down until they got the wink from their employer. Wo have .t t’.pon most excel¬ lent author ry that one of Mr. Leavitt’s assist¬ ants was requested by one .«f the persons inter¬ ested m the New-York sale to serve as a false bidder, and he very indignantly refused. We owe it to the Messes. Leavitt to say chat they had nothing to do wuh tins part of the sales, and that they very highly disapproved of if, but could not prevent it. Their record as auc¬ tioneers of pictures is very firmly established, and m all sales of which thev nave lull charge the public has nothing u r y from such prac¬ tices. • | The Cavalier, Meissonier. T lie catalogues in both places are rather more explicit, and show that the owner was not above the meanness of alter¬ ing the titles of some of these in the hope (a vain one) of escaping detection. That the poi¬ sons implicated will be pained by this ex¬ posure canuoc be floubted, but the public must oe protected from a crying, glariug system of dishonesty- -t t -• X 'V A .. c- ■ • rv ' • - ' < y v 7 // v •/, x* - 3 ' • •• i , ■ y };*K> A •X, ' -'»V (■ XA/X ,1. -V I l V, ,-r' * ■ >U ■ > 4 - :,l ,Vl «•' / A/ l [ ) It A 7 L 1 x . k'A ,, /■' ’ \ j, /! ■ 11 ' '' 'I ' !
