Wade & Co TO OUR CUSTOMERS In preparing this Book for the Printers' use, it has been our aim to make it as practical as possible. We have therefore selected such cuts as we thought would best show the shade of color and working properties of our various Inks,— one showing a good body of color,, and, in the bettei qualities, one showing its appearance in fine work. We have also endeavored so to arrange the colors as to give the best harmony and contrast, that it might be easy to select such quality and combination of colors as would seem desirable for any job in hand. We might have made our book more beautiful by inserting splendid cuts, but thought it would not be as useful as in its present simple form. It will be observed that these specimens are not printed on enameled paper or card surface to increase their brilliancy. We hope it will be of assistance to all who receive it, not only in giving their orders for Inks, but also in giving their- customers an opportunity to select understanding^ such Inks as they may desire used upon their work. Printed with H. D. Wade & Co.'s Book Ink, No. 1. Price, 50 tents per lb. [8] PRICES. The card prices on our labels and circulars have always designated the quality of our Inks, therefore, during and since the war, when all articles of commerce have advanced in price, Printing Inks could not remain an exception; and, in order that the Printer might not be confused by either a reduction of quality, or change of price, we adopted the plan of adhering to the uniform well-known standard quality and price, and meet the enhanced cost of materials and production by a uniform per centage of advance, which has from time to time varied with the cost, from twenty to one hundred per cent. The advance is now forty per cent., and we feel confident that there is scarcely another article of commerce that now bears so small an advance as forty per cent, over the price of 1860. USE AND ADAPTATION OF COLORED INKS. First of all, cleanliness rn every part of the Press, Form and Rollers, is most essential to the production of good work. Often when rollers appear to the eye to be perfectly clean, they are not; therefore the greatest care should be observed in this particular. Some of our best Printers will not accept a roller as clean until they can rub it with white tissue paper without soiling it, and this is none too severe a test when fine Colored Ink is to be used. If you Printed with H. D. Wade & Co.'s Book Ink. Tio. 1. Price, 50 cents per lb. I [3] have a soft paper and large type, you should use a soft Ink: even though it be of the finer grades it should be soft without much tenacity. We are oftentimes obliged to make a special Ink for such work. You must not expect to do fine work with the lower grades of Ink, and should bear in mind that the Ink you use on any given job is the smallest item of expense. It ahvays pays to use good Ink. REDUCING WITH VARNISH. This should be done with great care, and not use too much Varnish at once; a little at a time, until you find by trying that you have the right amount to make it work easy. Our Inks are generally made ready to work without the addition of Varnish, and if you introduce too much you reduce the color, and your work will not look as well. It is generally best to reduce with thin- Varnish, as less of that will be required to effect the desired purpose. HEAVY IMPRESSION FOR COLORED INKS. All printing in Colors requires a heavier impression than the same job in Black, for the color is heavier bodied or more solid, and does not adhere so quickly or easily to the paper; therefore, needs a heavier impression to form a smooth and uniform coating. : Printed with H. D. Wade & Co.'s Book Ink, \o. 1. Price, 50 cents per lb. ROLLERS. Grood bodied Rollers are also required, and but little Ink carried, and the more rolling the type gets the more beautiful the job will appear. Many jobs need six rollings to make them perfect. Rollers, if too green, will not take up the Ink, or, if they do, will not leave it on the type. WASHING ROLLERS. We always wash first with Camphene or Spirits of Turpentine; then with some kind of Alkali, Potash, or Carbonate of Soda: then rinse with clean water, after which let them stand for a little time, when they will be in good condition to take up and distribute the Ink properly. ■ WOOD- CUT INK. Rollers should be in the most perfect order and of good body, and but little Ink carried, but roll the type thoroughly; a heavy impression is also required. Some Printers have great trouble in using this kind of Ink because it is short and soft, but by following the above hints you will succeed. The same Ink is used for fine enameled and bristol board cards. Printed with H. U. Wade & Co.'s Fine Look Ink. Price, 75 cents par lb. SPECIAL INKS. We make large quantities of Ink for special uses, such as Tin-foil, Paging Ink, and Ink for Label Printing; also, all shades and qualities of Tints. By sending us any peculiar shade of color desired, we will try to match it, and adapt it to its required use. POSTER INKS. We manufacture large quantities of Poster Ink, both Colored and Black; also, Bag Inks for Cloth and Paper, and sell at very low net prices on large orders. BLACK INKS. The success attending the manufacture and sale of our Colored Inks has been so great that some Printers have been led to believe that we did not make Black Ink, or that we did not make so good an article in proportion as of Colored, and of course our competitors are not unwilling that such an impression should be conveyed, but it is a great mistake. We are confident that our sales of Black Inks are equal to any other house in this country. We make all grades of Black Inks, from the commonest Poster to the finest Wood-cut, and put it up in barrels, kegs, and cans of all sizes. Our News Ink is used by some of the : Printed with II. D. Wade & Co.'s Fine Book Ink. Price, 75 cents per lb. ! * mn [o] largest Newspapers in the country, such as the "New York Herald/' " Brooklyn Eagle/' "Rochester, N. Y. Union and Advertiser/' "Cleveland Herald/' "San Francisco Bulle- tin," and a multitude of others too numerous to mention. LITHOGRAPHIC INKS AND VARNISHES. Our Lithographic Inks and Varnishes are acknowledged by all who have seen them, to be equal in every respect to the best ever manufactured, either foreign or domestic. These Varnishes are made from pure linseed oil, free from gum, and Lithographers may rely upon a uniform quality. U NIFORMIT Y. We take great pains to make our Inks of uniform quality, and think, after years of experience, we have attained great perfection in this respect; some new manufacturers offer their Inks at net prices, without an advance, and would lead you to believe that they were cheaper than ours. Having no standard of quality or any uniformity, it is about the same as though we should mark one of our regular $1.00 Inks at $1.50, and sell it to our customers without any advance. We are confident that no one can give a better article than we do, at the same price. Printed with H. D. Wade & Co.'s Fine Book Ink. Price, 75 cents* per lh. ■* w *UX**T*Vgf»m~m ;l PAPER. Sometimes Printers condemn a good Ink when the fault is not in the Ink, but in the Paper. Great care and good judgment should be exercised in adapting Paper and Ink. SILVERING SOLUTION. This article, which we have for sale, is of our own man- ufacture, and will always be found reliable; it is used to cover copperfaced type or electrotype cuts with silver, when Vermilion or Red Inks are to be used on them, as copper acts chemically on the color, and soon causes the color to become almost brown; it also causes a deposit on the type, but bv using this Solution which can be done in a few minutes, it obviates all these difficulties, and it can be used to great advantage in printing with any kind of Colored Inks on copper. RDERING INKS. In ordering Inks from our list, it should be stated in the order what kind and price of Ink is wanted, and as far as possible, for what class of work it is to be used. If the order is for News Ink, "or Extra News Ink, specify whether it is to be used on a Hand or Power Press. If Power Press, state the kind of Press, and number of impressions per hour, that the Ink may be adapted to it. Printed with H. D. Wade & fo.'s Extra Fine Book Ink. Price. $1.00 per lb.
