CATALOGUE. On WEDNESDAY, MAY 5, 1897, AT ONE O’CLOCK PRECISELY. The following are the Property of SIR JOHN EVERETT MILLAIS , Bart ., deceased , late President of the Royal Academy. 1 AN ITALIAN CABINET, with folding doors boldly carved with columns, cherubs’ heads and architectural decorations —XVIth __ century —7 ft. 4 in. high, about 6 ft. wide Exhibited at the South Kensington Museum Formerly in the possession of Charles I. Regarding this cabinet, Sir J. E. Millais has left the following note: “ This cabinet I purchased of Mr. Annoot, Old Bond Street. It stood for years in his shop without attracting any attention, an unfashionable piece of furniture. In my afternoon walk I often passed the window, and wondered to see it unsold, and eventually became its owner. Not having room for it in Cromwell Place, I lent it to the South Kensington Museum, and very shortly after its exhibition there my friend, J. H. Pollen, discovered where it came from, a drawing of the cabinet having been published long ago in Atkinson’s book of ‘ Old English Furniture,’ wherein it is described as being at Theobald’s Palace. The two niches, where the figures of the Apostles now are, were empty when I bought it, probably with the key plate, stolen, for tbe silver of which they were made. The new figures were modelled, as near a3 possible, from the illustration. “ N.B.—This cabinet forms the background to the picture of the Princess Elizabeth in the Tower.” B 2 4 V/"- * 2 An Old North German Cabinet, of dark wood, with folding doors with boldly carved panels in relief and allegorical figures in the corners, capitals, masks, figures and other ornaments at the sides, and allegorical figures surmounted by Cupids bearing a coronet above, a large drawer beneath—8 ft. wide / Of this cabinet Sir John writes : “ The dark cabinet I believe to he North German, possibly a diploma work of a guild, and very fine of its kind.” //0* S 0 3 AN OLD GERMAN MARQUETERIE CABINET, with shaped front and ends, richly inlaid with arabesque foliage in coloured woods, in the centre is a marqueterie column with Corinthian capital, and a similar column at the angles, surmount^;! by carved open-work scroll ornament—7 ft. wide Regarding this cabinet Sir John gives the following history: “ Bought by Prof. Ella, of musical fame, at Vienna, and sold to me.
