The elevation of thought, the delicate air, beauty and gracefulnefs of this figure, and admirable tone of colouring, rink it among the firft pictures in the kingdom 76 The famous battle of Lepanto. This painting is record- ed by the hiftorian as follows— The battle of Le- panto fought between the Turks, and the confede- W. Vandeveld Blerftifaten Alb. Cuyp Stork Ditto P. Panini ( 6 ) rate fleets of Pope Pius V. Philip II. of Spain, and the Venetians. His Holinefs furniflied a few gallies and men; Philip fome part of the armament, and a brave commander Don John of Auftria, his natural brother ; the remainder was provided by the Republic. The fuccefs was beyond their warmell wifhes, 20, (XX) infidels periling in the conflia, and leaving thl fea to the holy triple diadem. We take the liberty of repeating the memorable exclamation of his Holinefs, on receiving the news of this fignal viaory. “ There “ wa^ a man fent from Gof and he was called John.” T he fharpeft conflia appears on the left, bet\i;een two veflels of the contending powers; the fort fires to aflifl: her friend; and Xurkifh galleys and mafts are feen finking. In the center is opened a little villa or horizon, which Ihews the battle ranged, and the great fury on both fides. Though it is fo fierce a combat, .every thing is dillinguilhable, and not unintelligibly wrapt up in fmoke and confufion, which is too often the cafe in thefe fubjeas. The (hipping are rigged with exaanefs, and the flems, ornaments, &c. pre- cifely according to the models of thofe times. The Imoke IS in the moll natural, rolling, and evaporating forms ; the water is tranfparent ; and the whole has a magnificent air, and mull certainly pleafe, as it repre- fents the moll fignal fea fight recorded in hillory. 77 An engagement at fea between the Englilh and Dutch fleets, a large and moll capital pidlure of this great mailer ; 78 A view on the Scheld, a moll bold and fpirited pidlure 79 A view on the Scheld, on the fide of Dort, in which is reprefented the embarkation of the Prince of Orange, with troops, &c. againll the Spaniards. Yandeveld Ditto Rubens ( 7 ) 83 An Italian fea port. This mailer died at a very early llage of life, his pictures are therefore very fcarce, and we may add from this fpecimen before us, invaluable, as this picture for warmth of colouring and elFedl, is equal to many of Claude's performances 84 A portrait of Lord Sydney, a pidlure of the firft rate, and acknowledged excellence 85 A large pidlure of a pen drawing, reprefenting a great fea engagement,, a moll wonderful and laborious perform- ance, executed with a minutenels, and at the fame time, exa£lnefs, that is aftonilhing 86 View of a harbour with variety of Ihipping, a moll capi- tal and high-finilhed pidlure, in his very bell; ftile 87 The repenting fmners before Chrift, a moll bold, noble,, and mallerly performance F I N I S., Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2017 with'funding from Getty Research Institute https://archive.org/details/catalogueofvalua00chri_4 I I I
