In presenting to the art-loving and mechanical public this work on Architectural Design, the author has endeavored to render it worthy of its title in the originality, character, and variety of the matter it embraces. That a high-toned work of this character, of original conception, imparts to the community at large an elevating and refining influence, no one will attempt to deny, as from its perusal noble resolutions are born, sketching in imagination that dearest of all places on earth to the human heart—a beautiful home, around which hope and memory delight ever to linger. In the selection of matter herein presented, it is believed much food for the architectural mind will be found. Most designs given in illustration have been execu¬ ted, well studied and corrected, and reproduced for publication, and none but the choicest models of their kind have been inserted. The range of subject is extensive, and the treatment of each particular one very thorough in illustration. The pleasing variety found in the many plates of bold and beautiful details will prove invaluable to the progressive mechanic, and the fine studies developed in the elevations, in many of which will be found that picturesque variety of sky outline, depth of shadow, and sweet repose so charming in an architectural conception, with their romantic and varied plans, will afford many themes for expanding and cultivating thought. It is well to remember that just as much material and labor is required to build a distorted, unpleasing house, as for one very attractive; hence, the first and most important step to be taken by parties contemplating building, is to select from a standard work a good design, or, what is still more judicious, to call into requisition the services of an experienced architect, as he will be able to relieve his employer of much trouble and annoyance, saving him several times the amount of his fees, and lightening the responsibility of the builder, in preventing many small but very annoy¬ ing errors from creeping in, rendering the entire design well studied and pleasing. The thorough utility of this work will be seen at a glance in turning it over, as designs of moderate cost have been developed with the same care and study that have been expended on the more important ones, thus presenting fine models of every grade of cost. Should this work prove a source from whence shall be derived ideas to be embodied in many delightful and attractive homes—lasting and beautiful monu¬ ments that shall leave on every beholder an indelible impression that shall bloom and bring forth fruit again—the loftiest ambition ol the author will have been achieved. This Magnificent Hotel, now projected, will, when completed, be the largest on the face of the globe, containing, exclusive of its many grand saloons, concert and dancing halls, one thousand eight hundred rooms. Ceilings of first or saloon floor being 25 feet, those above in proportion. The grand central tower rising to the height of two hundred and sixty-six feet above the level of carriage-drives, will be visible for many miles away from the surrounding landscape and the sea. Three elegant steam elevators, and six grand stair¬ cases will render the upper halls easy of access and safe for occupation. Its entire appoint¬ ments will be munificent in the extreme, and the decorations in fresco and ornamental plaster work palatial in conception. The spacious and beautiful open court in front, looking on the placid bosom of the Pacific, which bears at this point a striking resemblance to the world-renowned bay of Naples, lacking only the towering figure in the background of everlasting Vesuvius to oomplete the picture, will be. with its elaborate fountains and floral decorations, one of the most bewitchingly beautiful pictures of art and nature to be seen on earth, vying with the Champs Elysees'of Paris and the wonderful grounds of the Sydenham Palace, England. Y. *’• S.—As it is always gratifying to us to be able to refer purchasers to competent parties who have had experience with our furnaces, we take the liberty of referring to G. B. Ckoff, Esq., Architect, whose knowledge of them through their use qualifies him to judge of their merits. BURTIS & GRAFF. It is a well-known fact that the exceedingly important matter of heating a dwelling or public building has been but casually hinted at, or not even mentioned by the intended occupants, or the builder, until the time lias arrived when necessity compelled attention to an apparatus for this purpose, and the devising of a method for its appliance. We heartily coincide with the opinion of the noted author of this work, that it would be incomplete without a reference to what should be used for this purpose, and the way clearly pointed out for the comfort of the household and the auditory. We think that everybody engaged in build¬ ing will coincide with our views in this matter; as to the importance of constructing an edifice with regard to established rules for heating and ventilating; it is presumed by most people that a heating apparatus may be placed at any point in a cellar which they may think most conve¬ nient, and that the heat can readily be con¬ ducted to any desired point; and that in case «■ of a failure in heating the building to their satisfaction, the whole fault is attributed to the Furnace. That the absurdity of such an idea is being generally admitted, the increasing applica¬ tions we have for information on this subject is a guarantee. Did space permit, we would be glad to offer to the readers of this valuable work very many important hints, especially concerning the proper method of heating, together with a full description of our Furnaces. But as our descriptive circulars, containing hundreds of reliable references, as well as full information on the subject of heating and ventilating buildings, may be had on application, we here take occasion only to inform the public that our Furnaces are acknowledged by the leading architects to be superior to all ethers manufactured in this country, and that our style of work in this line is not only based on scientific principles, but is most thorough in every particular and guaranteed in every instance. As represented in above cuts, will be found upon an examination to be entirely free from the objections which have hitherto prevailed against the use of valves for these purposes. The chamber or tube coming through and Hush with the top of marble slab, and the plate and pull being screwed into the chamber from the top or outside, allows for the removal of the working parts in case of any obstruction in so simple a manner as to entirely overcome the disadvantages of the old style valve. It will also be noticed that Rubber has been substituted for the brass disc, thus insuring a more durable and much more relia¬ ble article. RILEY’S PATENT SELF-ACTING IRON CISTERN, For supplying Hopper Water Closets. Always empty except when tlie seat is occupied, simple in construction, inexpensive, very durable, and in its action absolutely automatic. It will be seen that when the seat is occupied the lever is depressed (see clotted lines), the outlet closed, and the Ball cock opened, supplying the cistern with the desired quantity (which may be regulated by the float); and on leaving the seat, the lever, which is connected with fixture under seat, again drops to its place, lifting the plug which is also an overflow, and discharges the water into the hopper.
